The high electrical conductivity and good chemical stability of MXenes offer hopes for their use in many applications, such as wearable electronics, energy storage, or electromagnetic interference shielding. While their optical, electronic and electrochemical properties have been widely studied, the information on thermal properties of MXenes is scarce. In this study, we investigate the heat transport properties of Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ MXene single flakes using scanning thermal microscopy and find exceptionally low anisotropic thermal conductivities within the Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$ flakes, leading to an effective thermal conductivity of 0.78$\pm$0.21 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$. This observation is in stark contrast to the predictions of the Wiedemann-Franz law, as the estimated Lorenz number is only 0.25 of the classical value. Due to the combination of low thermal conductivity and low emissivity of Ti$_3$C$_2$T$_x$, the heat loss from it is two orders of magnitude smaller than that from common metals. We derive a thermoelectric inequality in thermoelectric conversion between the material figure of merit (ZT) and the module effective ZT using the Constant Seebeck-coefficient Approximation combining with the Wiedemann-Franz law. In a P-N leg-pair module, the effective ZT lies between the individual ZT values of the P- and N-legs. In a single-leg module, however, the effective ZT is less than approximately one-third of the leg's ZT. This reduction results from the need for an external wire to complete the circuit, introducing additional thermal and electrical losses. Multi-dimensional numerical analysis shows that, although structural optimization can mitigate these losses, the system efficiency remains limited to below half of the ideal single-leg material efficiency. Our findings explain the single-leg efficiency overestimation and highlight the importance of optimizing the P-N leg-pair module structure. Systematic and comparative research on Lorenz ratios for graphene and nonrelativistic systems has been studied to identify their Wiedemann-Franz law violation domain. Fermi energy and temperature are the main governing parameters for deciding the values of the Lorenz ratio, which is basically thermal conductivity divided by electrical conductivity times temperature times Lorenz number. Metals as three-dimensional nonrelativistic electron gas locate at higher Fermi-energy by temperature domain, where Lorenz ratio remains one. Hence, they obey the Wiedemann-Franz law. By creating higher doping in a two-dimensional graphene system, one can again reach a higher Fermi-energy by temperature domain and get a constant Lorenz ratio. For both graphene and non-relativistic systems, the Lorenz ratio goes below one if we go lower Fermi-energy by temperature domain, which is possible for the graphene system by decreasing the doping concentration. Experimentally observed greater than one Lorenz ratio in this lower Fermi-energy by temperature domain or Dirac Fluid domain indicates that non-fluid expressions of Lorenz ratio should be replaced by fluid-type expressions. We have noticed a divergent trend of Lorenz ratio in the Dirac Fluid domain using its fluid-type expression, and it matches with the trend of experimental data., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

On approaching the dynamical transition temperature, supercooled liquids show heterogeneity over space and time. Static replica theory investigates the dynamical crossover in terms of the free energy landscape (FEL). Two kinds of static approaches have provided a self-consistent equation for determining this crossover, similar to the mode coupling theory for glassy dynamics. One uses the Morita-Hiroike formalism of the liquid state theory, whereas the other relies on the density functional theory (DFT). Each of the two approaches has advantages in terms of perturbative field theory. Here, we develop a replica field theory that has the benefits from both formulations. We introduce the generalized Franz-Parisi potential to formulate a correlation functional. Considering fluctuations around an inhomogeneous density determined by the Ramakrishnan--Yussouf DFT, we find a new closure as the stability condition of the correlation functional. The closure leads to the self-consistent equation involving the triplet direct correlation function. We measure the thermal conductivity of solid and molten tungsten using Steady State Temperature Differential Radiometry. We demonstrate that the thermal conductivity can be well described by application of Wiedemann-Franz Law to electrical resistivity data, thus suggesting the validity of Wiedemann-Franz Law to capture the electronic thermal conductivity of metals in their molten phase. We further support this conclusion using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations with a machine-learned potential. Our results show that at these high temperatures, the vibrational contribution to thermal conductivity is negligible compared to the electronic component.

The experimental work [J. Crossno et al., Science 351, 1058 (2016)], which reported the violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in monolayer graphene characterized by a sharp peak of the Lorenz ratio at a finite temperature, has not been fully explained. Our previous work [Y.-T. Tu and S. Das Sarma, Phys. Rev. B 107, 085401 (2023)] provided a possible explanation through a Boltzmann-transport model with bipolar diffusion and an energy gap possibly induced by the substrate. In this paper, we extend our calculation to include a weak magnetic field perpendicular to the graphene layer, which is experimentally relevant, and may shed light on the possible violation or not of the Wiedemann-Franz law. We find that the magnetic field enhances the size of the peak of the Lorenz ratio but has little effect on its position, and that the transverse component of the Lorenz ratio can be either positive or negative depending on the parameter regime. In addition, we do the same calculation for bilayer graphene in the presence of a magnetic field and show the qualitative similarity with monolayer graphene. Violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in a 2D topological insulator due to Majorana bound states is studied via the Lorenz ratio in the single-particle picture. We study the scaling of the Lorenz ratio in the presence and absence of Majorana bound states with inelastic scattering modeled using a Buttiker voltage-temperature probe. We compare our results with that seen in a quantum dot junction in the Luttinger liquid picture operating in the topological Kondo regime. We explore the scaling of the Lorentz ratio in our setup when either phase and momentum relaxation or phase relaxation is present. Electrical and thermal transport were studied in a vacuum-annealed polycrystalline silver wire with residual resistivity ratio 200-400, in the temperature range 0.1-1.2K and in magnetic fields up to 5T. Both at zero field and at 5T the wire exhibits the Wiedemann-Franz law with the fundamental Lorenz number, contrary to an earlier report [Gloos, K. et al, Cryogenics 30, 14 (1990)]. In isolated nonlinear optical waveguide arrays with bounded energy spectrum, simultaneous conservation of energy and power of the optical modes enables study of coupled thermal and particle transport in the negative temperature regime. Here, based on exact numerical simulation and rationale from Landauer formalism, we predict generic violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in such systems. This is rooted in the spectral decoupling of thermal and power current of optical modes, and their different temperature dependence. Our work extends the study of coupled thermal and particle transport into unprecedented regimes, not reachable in natural condensed matter and atomic gas systems.

Using the near-detailed-balance distribution function obtained in our recent work, we present a set of covariant gravito-thermal transport equations for neutral relativistic gases in a generic stationary spacetime. All relevant tensorial transport coefficients are worked out and are presented using some particular integration functions in $(\alpha,\zeta)$, where $\alpha = -\beta\mu$ and $\zeta =\beta m$ is the relativistic coldness, with $\beta$ being the inverse temperature and $\mu$ being the chemical potential. It is shown that the Onsager reciprocal relation holds in the gravito-thermal transport phenomena, and that the heat conductivity and the gravito-conductivity tensors are proportional to each other, with the coefficient of proportionality given by the product of the so-called Lorenz number with the temperature, thus proving a gravitational variant of the Wiedemann-Franz law. It is remarkable that, for strongly degenerate Fermi gases, the Lorenz number takes a universal constant value $L=\pi^2/3$, which extends the Wiedemann-Franz law into the Wiedemann-Franz-Lorenz law., Comment: 23 pages, one figure. This study performed first-principles calculations based on the time-dependent density functional theory to control the valley degree of freedom relating to the dynamical Franz-Keldysh effect (DFKE) in a monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenide. By mimicking the attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, we performed numerical pump-probe experiments to observe DFKE around the $K$ or $K'$ valley in WSe$_2$ monolayer with a linearly-polarized pump field and a circularly-polarized probe pulse. We found that the circularly-polarized probe pulse with a given helicity can selectively observe the transient conductivity modulated by DFKE in each valley. The transient conductivity and excitation probability around each valley oscillate with the pump field frequency $\Omega$. The phases of the $\Omega$ oscillation for the $K$ and $K'$ valleys are opposite to each other. Furthermore, the pump-driven DFKE alters the absorption rate of WSe$_2$ monolayer and yields the valley-dependent $\Omega$ oscillation of the electron excitation induced by the pump plus probe field. With a simplified two-band model, we identified the $\Omega$ oscillation of the off-diagonal conductivity caused by the band asymmetry around the valleys as the physical mechanism responsible for the valley-selective DFKE., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We show that the transport integrals of the two-site charge Kondo circuits connecting various multi-channel Kondo simulators satisfy the generalized Wiedemann-Franz law with the universal Lorenz ratios all greater than one. The magic Lorenz ratios are directly related to the Anderson's orthogonality catastrophe in quantum simulators providing some additional universal measure for the strong electron-electron correlations. The Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law relates the electronic component of the thermal conductivity to the electrical conductivity in metals through the Lorenz number. The WF law has proven to be remarkably robust, however violations have been observed in many topological materials. In this work, we report thermoelectric measurements conducted on Heusler, ferromagnetic, Weyl semimetal Co$_2$MnAl which shows a drastic, temperature dependent violation of the WF law below 300 K. We then discuss our result in the context of known physical explanations for WF law violation. Both the magnitude and temperature dependence of the violation in Co2MnAl are extreme, indicating that there may be more than one effect contributing to the violation in this system., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures
