Quels que soient la forme et le contenu véhiculé, le livre fait partie de notre quotidien. Cet objet familier, qu'on achète en librairie, en ligne, en kiosque ou dans les grandes surfaces, doit son existence à l'implantation progressive d'une série de métiers spécialisés. Au Québec, de la Nouvelle-France à nos jours, des femmes et des hommes en ont ainsi fait le coeur de leur vie professionnelle : les trajectoires de ces individus et des institutions qu'ils ont bâties tissent un récit fascinant, celui de l'émergence et du déploiement de l'un des supports privilégiés de la connaissance, de la littérature et de l'information. Pris séparément, les parcours des gens du livre demeurent toutefois méconnus en raison de l'anonymat généralement associé aux mondes de l'édition, de l'imprimerie, de la traduction, de l'illustration, de la distribution, de la librairie et de la bibliothéconomie. C'est cet angle mort que vient éclairer le présent ouvrage. Fruit de nombreuses années de recherche, le Dictionnaire repose sur l'expertise et la collaboration d'une centaine de personnes. Après une introduction détaillée, qui retrace l'évolution des métiers du livre au Québec, il présente près de 400 notices consacrées à des individus et des institutions qui ont marqué l'histoire.

Fascinating and compelling in equal measure this volume presents a critical examination of the multilayered relationships between engineering and business. In so doing the study also stimulates ethical reflection on how these relationships either enhance or inhibit strategies to address vital issues of our time. In the context of geopolitical, economic, and environmental tendencies the authors explore the world that we should want to create and the role of the engineer and the business manager in this endeavor. Throughout this volume the authors identify periods of alignment and periods of tension between engineering and business. They look at focal points of the engineering-business nexus related to the development of capitalism. The book explores past and present movements to reshape, reform, or reject this nexus.The volume is informed by questions of importance for industry as well as for higher education. These are: What kinds of conflict arise for engineers in their attempts to straddle both professional and organizational commitments? How should professionals be managed to avoid a clash of managerial and professional cultures? How do engineers create value in firms and corporations? What kinds of tension exist between higher education and industry? What challenges does the neoliberal entrepreneurial university pose for management, faculty, students, society, and industry? Should engineering graduates be ready for work, and can they possibly be? What kinds of business issues are reflected in engineering education curricula, and for what purpose? Is there a limit to the degree of business hybridization in engineering degree programs, and if so, what would be the criterion for its definition? Is there a place in engineering education curricula for reflective critique of assumptions related to business and economic thinking? One ideal of managementand control comes to the fore as the Anthropocene - the world transformed into an engineered artefact which includes human existence. The volume raises the question as to how engineering and business together should be considered, given the fact that the current engineering-business nexus remains embedded within an economic model of continual growth. By addressing macro-level issues such as energy policy, sustainable development, globalization, and social justice this study will both help create awareness and stimulate development of self-knowledge among practitioners, educators, and students thereby ultimately addressing the need for better informed citizens to safeguard planet Earth as a human life supporting system.

Que signifie travailler comme enseignant aujourd'hui? Comment ce travail est-il vécu de l'intérieur par ceux et celles qui l'accomplissent? En quoi les dispositifs de l'organisation scolaire (division du travail, classes fermées, isolement des enseignants, bureaucratie, etc.) affectent-ils l'activité enseignante? En admettant que tout travail possède des outils et une technologie, quels sont-ils pour l'enseignement? Existe-t-il des savoirs propres à ce métier? Telles sont quelques-unes des questions auxquelles les auteurs ont voulu répondre, en allant mener directement leur enquête dans les établissements scolaires, pour mieux comprendre le travail des enseignants en classe, leurs rapports aux élèves, leurs relations aux pairs et aux autres acteurs de la quotidienneté, les spécialistes, les directions locales, les parents, etc.

L'enseignant fait-il une différence pour favoriser l'apprentissage? Ou considère-t-on que tout est déterminé en grande partie par le développement de l'enfant, le contexte social, les programmes? Et s'il fait une différence, quelle est-elle? Comment se manifeste-t-elle dans ses comportements, idées, attitudes en tant qu'enseignant? Clermont Gauthier dirige une équipe de recherche avec laquelle il a travaillé pour la rédaction de cet ouvrage. En réaction au plaidoyer du groupe Holmes (1986, 1990, 1995) pour la professionnalisation de l'enseignement et à son postulat sur l'existence d'une base de connaissances pour enseigner, les auteurs se sont interrogés sur la provenance, la nature et la solidité d'une telle base de connaissances. Cette voie de recherche, habituellement délaissée par les chercheurs francophones en éducation, porte sur l'enseignement et non sur l'apprentissage. Les auteurs ont pris le parti d'analyser des recherches empiriques menées dans les classes et non des essais normatifs sur ce que devrait être l'enseignement et en ont regroupé les résultats en deux catégories : la gestion de la classe et la gestion de la matière. Le problème de l'utilisation des résultats de la recherche leur apparaissant aussi important que celui de la détermination d'une base de connaissances, ils ont jugé nécessaire de situer leurs analyses dans un cadre plus vaste et de formuler les prolégomènes d'une théorie empirique de la pédagogie.

This book on mobility of health professionals reviews, analyses and summarises published information and data as well as collected interview data from stake holders, including politicians, policy makers, health service managers and migrant health workers. It is based on the research carried out under the umbrella of the EU-funded project “Mobility of Health Professionals (MoHProf).The partners involved in the MoHProf project gathered evidence from 25 countries around basic questions and knowledge gaps relating to the international migration of health professionals, which involved an analysis of migration flows and evaluation of policies addressing migration. This book provides a comprehensive description and analysis of the mobility streams, the motives and driving forces behind them and the impact on and challenges for health systems and draws conclusions and provides recommendations for future strategic planning, monitoring and the management of mobility of health professionals as well as further research and policy development needs.
