Abstract The main aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the elderly population and economic growth in 25 North and South American countries use annual secondary data from 1961 to 2021. Instead of focusing on the conditional mean, this study tests for Granger causality in the entire conditional distribution of the elderly population and economic growth through wavelet coherence analysis. The study findings indicated a unidirectional Granger causality running from per capita gross domestic product (GDP) to the elderly population for Bolivia, Colombia, Guyana, Peru and Puerto Rico and also from elderly population to per capita GDP for Costa Rica, Ecuador and Honduras. However, there is no causal relationship between the elderly population and economic growth for the rest of the countries. Wavelet coherence analysis depicted that economic growth positively led the elderly population in North America during the early 21st century. Furthermore, economic growth had been negatively leading the elderly population in South America throughout the period under consideration. This empirical study shows that policymakers of these economies need to analyse the transformation in the elderly population-economic growth causality robustness throughout the year when devising policies.

Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent liver disorder strongly associated with metabolic dysfunction, particularly in elderly populations where it presents with higher prevalence and severity. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and NAFLD in older adults, focusing on the independent effect of hyperuricemia on NAFLD risk. We enrolled 469 individuals aged ≥ 65 years who underwent community health checkups. The exposure variable was baseline SUA levels, while the outcome variable was the occurrence of NAFLD. Covariates included age, sex, BMI, blood pressure, diabetes status, lipids (TC, TG, LDL, HDL), glycemic indices (FPG, HBA1C), and physical activity. Multivariable logistic regression was applied to estimate the independent effect of SUA levels and hyperuricemia on NAFLD. Hyperuricemia was significantly associated with increased NAFLD risk (adjusted OR 2.16, 95% CI 1.28–3.67). Stratified analysis revealed a stronger association in individuals with elevated triglycerides (TG ≥ 2.26 mmol/L, OR 7.07, 95% CI 1.72–29.18). However, the association between SUA as a continuous variable and NAFLD risk was attenuated after adjusting for metabolic factors. Hyperuricemia independently increases NAFLD risk in older adults, particularly in those with elevated triglycerides, suggesting a potential synergistic effect. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating SUA assessments into routine metabolic evaluations and developing targeted interventions to mitigate NAFLD risk.

Abstract Dementia represents a significant health issue, afflicting both patients and their families. To assess the global trends in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs) of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias in the elderly population, the Global Burden of Disease Study (1999−2019) was used. The average annual percentage change (AAPC) was estimated using linear regression. Stratified analysis of the global trends by age, sex, region, national level, and social development index (SDI) were also performed. The global incidence of AD and other dementias increased from 507.96 per 100,000 in 1990 to 569.39 per 100,000 in 2019, showing a significant increase in this period. In males, the incidence increased from 387.56 per 100,000 population in 1990 to 462.40 per 100,000 in 2019 (AAPC = 0.61), whereas females experienced a slower rise (AAPC = 0.31) and had a higher incidence in 2019 (662.93 per 100,000 population). The most significant increase was observed in individuals aged 60−64 and those in the middle‐SDI quintile. Regionally, the high‐income Asia Pacific had the highest incidence (890.01 per 100,000 population) and DALYs (3043.86 per 100,000) in AD and other dementias in 2019. As for national trends, Japan had the most pronounced increase in the incidence and DALYs of AD and other dementias during the 1990−2019 period. These findings highlight the growing burden of dementias on life expectancy at a population level, which is significant for healthcare professionals and decision‐makers to conduct the ongoing debate on the policy of AD and other dementias.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a major public health problem with high rates of morbidity, disability and mortality, especially in the elderly population. This study explored the diagnosis and treatment status of AF in adults aged ≥65 years in the community through wearable dynamic electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 4 random communities within the Qingpu district of Shanghai, China. Between January 1, 2020 and June 30, 2022, the ECGs of 3852 adults aged 65 years or older were examined through wearable dynamic ECG monitoring. Data from 3839 participants were ultimately analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine the independent predictors of AF. Results: Wearable dynamic ECG monitoring detected AF in 360 elderly people, 78 of whom were diagnosed with AF for the first time. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that snoring, renal dysfunction, coronary heart disease and high CHA2DS2-VASc score were independent risk factors for AF. Among patients with unknown AF, 68 (87.20 %) met the criteria for anticoagulant therapy based on the CHA2DS2-VASc score. Only 4 (5.88 %) patients were taking anticoagulants. Of the patients with a clear history of AF, 249 (84.98 %) needed an anticoagulant strategy, but only 18 (7.23 %) took oral anticoagulants. Conclusion: Many elderly people have silent AF, and wearable dynamic ECG monitoring can be used to screen for AF effectively.

The aging process involves numerous changes, on a physical, social and family level, which requires the presence of necessary adaptive strategies for maintaining a healthy emotional level and an optimum well-being. Numerous theories have focused on the relation between the coping strategies and psychological well-being on elderly people, which can be the key for successful aging. The coping mechanisms appear in the context of change and perceived as stressful, while the elderly must tolerate or adjust their approach of these new situations, in order to maintain their emotional balance and well-being. The issue occurs when the changes are plenty, in a brief time period, and the individual is having the feeling of lack of control regarding his own life. This perception can determine low self-esteem, anxiety or depression. The third age being often characterized by successive changes on the social, family and medical status. Possible stressors at the third age that require coping may be acute, such as loss of a spouse, or are of longer duration, such as chronic pain or illness, long-lasting financial problems, ageism. Coping strategies involves effort and energy greater than the daily routine. A prolonged mobilization of resources can cause psychological and physical breakdowns. Older people's experiences are influenced by a combination of factors, such as gender, old age stages, religion, health, illness, location, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. The research regarding the connection between psychological well-being and coping mechanisms can represent a base for future development of psychological interventions in the elderly population.

BackgroundThe prevalence of overactive bladder (OAB) is increasing in the elderly population and there is growing evidence that malnutrition affects the urinary system. Despite this, research on the relationship between nutritional factors and OAB remains limited.MethodsWe included 17,161 elderly individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2005 and 2018. Overactive Bladder Symptom Scores (OABSS) were utilized to assess symptoms of OAB. A multifactorial logistic regression analysis was employed to evaluate the independent association between the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and the prevalence of OAB. Restricted cubic spline plots examined the potential non-linear relationship between GNRI and OAB. Influencing factors were assessed through subgroup analyses, while the predictive utility of GNRI was assessed with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Background: The spike in cases of sleep-related issues and its ill effects among the geriatric population has been highly noted these days. The drop in sleep quality has been seen to be associated with various day-to-day factors. The study has been conducted to mark the quality of sleep and the factors associated with it in the elderly population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the elderly population. A face-to-face interview of 89 individuals over 60 years of age was conducted. The study tool for assessment of the quality of sleep was Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Chi-square test was done to find out the association between various factors and quality of sleep. ObjectiveTo understand the network relationship of influencing factors for hyperlipidemia in the elderly population of Henan province and predict their disease risk, providing a reference basis for formulating prevention and intervention measures for hyperlipidemia. MethodsFrom July to December 2022, a multi-stage random sampling method was used to select 123 741 elderly individuals aged ≥ 60 years old in Henan province for questionnaire surveys, physical examinations, and laboratory tests. Based on multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis, a hyperlipidemia Bayesian network model was constructed using the Max-Min Hill-Climbing (MMHC) algorithm to analyze the network relationship of influencing factors for hyperlipidemia in the local elderly population and predict their disease risk. ResultsAmong the 116 091 elderly individuals in Henan province finally included in the analysis, 33 023 had hyperlipidemia, with a prevalence rate of 28.45%; 9 873, 13 738, 14 765, and 4 338 individuals had high total cholesterol (TC), high triglyceride (TG), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), respectively, with prevalence rates of 8.50%, 11.83%, 12.72%, and 3.74%, respectively. Multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis showed that female gender, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) ≥ 0.5, body mass index (BMI) ≥ 18.5, central obesity, hypertension, and diabetes were risk factors for hyperlipidemia in the elderly population of Henan province, while age ≥ 80 years old and junior high school education or above were protective factors. Bayesian network model analysis showed that gender, BMI, hypertension, and diabetes were directly associated with hyperlipidemia, while age, education level, WHtR, and central obesity were indirectly associated. Risk inference results showed that the highest risk of hyperlipidemia was 41.6% for elderly male hypertensive individuals with BMI ≥ 28.0, 38.8% for obese elderly individuals, and 37.0% for the elderly individuals with hypertension and diabetes.ConclusionThe prevalence of hyperlipidemia in the elderly population of Henan province was relatively low. Gender, age, education level, BMI, WHtR, central obesity, hypertension, and diabetes were the main influencing factors for hyperlipidemia in the local elderly population. In the prevention and control of hyperlipidemia, attention should be particularly paid to the elderly male hypertensive individuals with BMI ≥ 28.0.

‍Objective‍ ‍To identify and delineate the developmental trajectories of depressive symptoms in the middle-aged and elderly population in China, and to explore the risk factors for depressive symptom trajectories in China's middle-aged and elderly population. Methods‍ ‍According to our inclusion and exclusion criteria, 7 600 participants were subjected based on the data from the China Health and Aged Care Tracking Survey (CHARLS) published by Peking University. The data from 5 waves of the survey from 2011 to 2023 were collected and analyzed with latent growth curve model (LGCM), latent class growth model (LGCM) to identify the developmental trajectories of depressive symptoms in the participants. Multicategorical logistic regression analyses were conducted to analyze whether gender, marital status, educational level, urban/rural residence, annual income, self-rated health status, and childhood bullying experience were risk factors for different trajectories of depressive symptoms. Results‍ ‍Two developmental trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified and classified in this study, that is, low-level stable (n=5 545, 72.96%) and high-level ascending (n=2 055, 27.04%). Background Given the increasing prevalence of the high incidence of bone and joint diseases in the elderly population, and significantly associated with higher mortality, more disability, decline in functional status and lower quality of life, this creates a large disease burden. There is currently no research on the prevalence and influencing factors of this disease in Henan Province. Objective To provide scientific basis for understanding the epidemic characteristics and influencing factors of bone and joint diseases in the elderly population in Henan Province and implementing precise prevention and control. Methods The multi-stage random cluster sampling method was used to obtain the demographic characteristics, past disease history, physical activity and physical indicators of permanent residents aged≥18 years old in Henan Province in 2018 through questionnaires, medical physical examination, laboratory testing and other methods. 1 055 people aged ≥60 years old were included in this study. Multivariate Logistic regression was used to analyze the characteristics and influencing factors of bone and joint diseases in the elderly population with different characteristics in Henan Province. Results The incidence rate of bone and joint diseases among the elderly population in Henan Province in 2018 was 28.13% (95%CI=28.10%-28.15%). BackgroundThe success of mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination relies on achieving a participation rate of at least 65% within the endemic community. However, participation of sub-population in the community varies and a significant treatment gap among the elderly population, remains to be addressed. The present study explores the factors influencing the elderly participation in MDA and propose possible solutions to bridge the gap.MethodsA cross-sectional study of individuals aged 60 years and above was conducted from August to December 2023 in Yadgiri district of Karnataka, which is endemic for LF. The participants were interviewed using a structured questionnaire, focusing on the perception about LF and MDA and drug consumption behaviours. STATA 14 software was used to analyse the data. We used a logistic regression model to determine the factors influencing drug consumption.ResultsThe study included 315 elderly individuals with a mean age (SD) of 67.4 (6.2) years. Although, 58.4% of them received the drugs during the last round of MDA in 2023, only 40.6% consumed it. The drug refusal rate was 19.4%. Fear of side effects (22.9%) was cited as the primary reason for not accepting the drugs. Weak perception of LF transmission risk (25.7%) and mistrust of drug safety (42.5%) were reported as reasons for non-compliance. Logistic regression identified significant associations, including residence (peri-urban: OR = 6.80), chronic disease (diabetes: OR = 2.89), trust on drug safety (OR = 16.27), and opinion of neighbours (OR = 5.35).ConclusionParticipation of elderly population in MDA was suboptimal (40.6%). Tailored interventions to improve consumption such as addressing misconceptions, building trust in MDA and effective monitoring and management of adverse events are vital to enhance their participation. The National Programme should have specific guidelines and strategies to address this issue to improve their participation in MDA for elimination of LF.

Background: The femoral neck system (FNS) has recently emerged as an innovative treatment option for femoral neck fractures and shown promising results. However, the studies of treatment outcome in elderly population are still insufficient. The purpose of this study is to evaluate outcome of elder patients with femoral neck fractures treated with FNS in Taiwanese population. Materials and methods: We retrospective reviewed 61 patients who underwent treatment with FNS for femoral neck fractures at our institution, 8 patients were excluded. We divided remaining 53 patients into two groups according to age, with a cutoff at 60 years old. Radiography parameters, operative finding and postoperative complications were analyzed. Results: Among these 53 cases, 5 patients in elderly group had severe complication resulting in failure and required revision surgery. There was no failure in young group. The overall failure rate of FNS was 9.4%, and it was 16.1% in elderly group. Preoperative posterior tilt had a significantly higher risk of implant failure (p = 0.011). Conclusions: Excessive preoperative posterior tilt increased the risk of implant failure in elder population with non-displaced femoral neck fractures treated with FNS. In addition, peri-implant subtrochanteric fractures represented a significant complication that requires careful consideration when utilizing FNS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
