Abstract

This study aims at determining the accuracy of a full body inertial measurement system in a real skiing environment in comparison with an optical video based system. Recent studies have shown the use of inertial measurement systems for the determination of kinematical parameters in alpine skiing. However, a quantitative validation of a full body inertial measurement system for the application in alpine skiing is so far not available. For the purpose of this study, a skier performed a test-run equipped with a full body inertial measurement system in combination with a DGPS. In addition, one turn of the test-run was analyzed by an optical video based system. With respect to the analyzed angles, a maximum mean difference of 4.9° was measured. No differences in the measured angles between the inertial measurement system and the combined usage with a DGPS were found. Concerning the determination of the skier's trajectory, an additional system (e.g., DGPS) must be used. As opposed to optical methods, the main advantages of the inertial measurement system are the determination of kinematical parameters without the limitation of restricted capture volume, and small time costs for the measurement preparation and data analysis. Abstract

The aim of the study was the application of a full body inertial measurement system (IMS) for a kinematic analysis of the discus throw and the evaluation of its applicability. For this purpose, one male sports student performed three discus throws equipped with the IMS. All trials were additionally filmed by high-speed video. The results indicate that performance-relevant information can be obtained regarding the temporal coordination of the body segments and body joint angles. Limitations exist for the accurate detection of the last foot contact related instant and the discus release instant by solely using the IMS data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the biomechanical literature only a few studies are available focusing on the determination of joint loading within the lower extremities in snowboarding. These studies are limited to analysis in a restricted capture volume due to the use of optical video-based systems. To overcome this restriction the aim of the present study was to develop a method to determine net joint moments within the lower extremities in snowboarding for complete measurement runs. An experienced snowboarder performed several runs equipped with two custom-made force plates as well as a full-body inertial measurement system. A rigid, multi-segment model was developed to describe the motion and loads within the lower extremities. This model is based on an existing lower-body model and designed to be run by the OpenSim software package. Measured kinetic and kinematic data were imported into the OpenSim program and inverse dynamic calculations were performed. The results illustrate the potential of the developed method for the determination of joint loadings within the lower extremities for complete measurement runs in a real snowboarding environment. The calculated net joint moments of force are reasonable in comparison to the data presented in the literature. A good reliability of the method seems to be indicated by the low data variation between different turns. Due to the unknown accuracy of this method the application for inter-individual studies as well as studies of injury mechanisms may be limited. For intra-individual studies comparing different snowboarding techniques as well as different snowboard equipment the method seems to be beneficial. Abstract

One of the main theories in ecological psychology is the theory of affordances. Affordances are opportunities for action which are provided by the environment in which the action takes place and are action specific. So affordances describe how the environment allows, supports and constrains an action. The idea of studying the affordances can also be applied to sport, in this case to putting in golf, to gain insight into how performance is influenced by the sport specific environment. During tournaments, discrete experiences of players while performing a putt were collected for several rounds at one green. Using the ISOPAR method (Stöckl et al., 2011) all the single experiences of one round of the different players were transformed into a continuous average experience of the field across the whole green. Based on ISOPAR maps we can visualize the affordances and constraints which influenced the field's play. According to the number and the arrangement of the iso-lines on the ISOPAR maps we can identify areas on the green where the play of the field was constrained heavily by gradients on the green's surface and/or distance to the cup. Abstract

The present study investigated whether there is an anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) prior to the onset of predictable perturbation generated by a releasing in the archery performance task. Eighteen volunteers were divided into two groups (expert vs. novice) depending on skill levels. Participants stood on a force plate holding a bow with a laser pointer and took a full drawing motion aiming the laser pointer to the center of target, placed 10 m away from the force plate, then released motion was performed based on the individual's preferred timing. Motion capture system measured the bow motion in 3D, two force plates estimated center of pressure (COP) displacements, and electromyographic (EMG) recorded eight lower limb muscles during the anticipatory and compensatory phases of postural control. The results revealed that, compared to the novice group, (1) the expert group showed smaller variability of bow motion, (2) the APA patterns of the COP and muscle activities before the onset of perturbation (releasing), and (3) shorter time interval between the perturbation onset and the COP peak displacement. The findings suggest that a long‐term practice results in the experts could be adopted to use APA generating mechanical benefit to compensate for predictable perturbation. This would be able to lead to a more stable subsequent postural control to realize the task goal. Bislang beschränken sich die aktuellen Anti-Doping-Bestimmungen auf positiv gesetztes Recht, das partiell und in konkreten Fällen von der alltäglichen moralischen Intuition abgekoppelt ist. Dieser Band zeigt: Der Befund eines Auseinanderscherens von moralischen und rechtlichen Normen trifft nicht nur auf das Doping zu, sondern ist für die gesamte Moderne charakteristisch.
