Abstract: The yield of charged particles associated with high-pt trigger particles (8 < p(t) < 15 GeV/c) is measured with the ALICE detector in Pb-Pb collisions at root S-NN = 2.76 TeV relative to proton-proton collisions at the same energy. The conditional per-trigger yields are extracted from the narrow jetlike correlation peaks in azimuthal dihadron correlations. In the 5% most central collisions, we observe that the yield of associated charged particles with transverse momenta p(t) > 3 GeV/c on the away side drops to about 60% of that observed in pp collisions, while on the near side a moderate enhancement of 20%-30% is found.

Abstract: The ALICE experiment has measured the inclusive J/psi production in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV down to zero transverse momentum in the rapidity range 2.5 < y < 4. A suppression of the inclusive J/psi yield in Pb-Pb is observed with respect to the one measured in pp collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The nuclear modification factor, integrated over the 0%-80% most central collisions, is 0.545 +/- 0.032(stat) +/- 0.083dsyst_ and does not exhibit a significant dependence on the collision centrality. These features appear significantly different from measurements at lower collision energies. Models including J/psi production from charm quarks in a deconfined partonic phase can describe our data.

Abstract: The differential production cross section of electrons from semileptonic heavy-flavor hadron decays has been measured at midrapidity (\y\ < 0.5) in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV with ALICE at the LHC. Electrons were measured in the transverse momentum range 0.5 < p(t) < 8 GeV/c. Predictions from a fixed-order perturbative QCD calculation with next-to-leading-log resummation agree with the data within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Abstract: Angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger (t) and associated (a) particles are measured by the ALICE experiment in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV for transverse momenta 0.25 < p(T)(t,a) < 15 GeV/c, where p(T)(t) > p(T)(a). The shapes of the pair correlation distributions are studied in a variety of collision centrality classes between 0 and 50% of the total hadronic cross section for particles in the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 1.0. Distributions in relative azimuth Delta phi equivalent to phi(t) - phi(a) are analyzed for |Delta eta| equivalent to |eta(t) - eta(a)| > 0.8, and are referred to as "long-range correlations". Fourier components V-n Delta equivalent to < cos(n Delta phi)> are extracted from the long-range azimuthal correlation functions. If particle pairs are correlated to one another through their individual correlation to a common symmetry plane, then the pair anisotropy V-n Delta (p(T)(t), p(T)(a)) is fully described in terms of single-particle anisotropies v(n)(p(T)) as V-n Delta(p(T)(t), p(T)(a)) = v(n)(p(T)(t))v(n)(p(T)(a)). Abstract: We present first measurements of the pseudorapidity and azimuth (η, φ) bin-size dependence of event-wise mean transverse-momentum 〈pt〉 fluctuations for Au–Au collisions at GeV. We invert that dependence to obtain pt autocorrelations on differences (ηΔ, φΔ) interpreted to represent velocity/temperature distributions on (η, φ). The general form of the autocorrelations suggests that the basic correlation mechanism is parton fragmentation. The autocorrelations vary rapidly with collision centrality, which suggests that fragmentation is strongly modified by a dissipative medium in the more central Au–Au collisions relative to peripheral or p–p collisions.

7. Modulation of the conformational landscape of the PDZ3 domain by perturbation on a distal non-canonical α3 helix: decoding the microscopic mechanism of allostery in the PDZ3 domain.

Abstract: While allosteric signal transduction is crucial for protein signaling and regulation, the dynamic process of allosteric communication remains poorly understood. The third PDZ domain (PDZ stands for the common structural domain shared by the postsynaptic density protein (PSD95), Drosophila disc large tumor suppressor (DlgA), and zonula occludens-1 protein (ZO-1)) serves as a classic example of a single-domain allosteric protein, demonstrating a long-range coupling between the C-terminal α helix (known as the α3 helix) and ligand binding. A molecular level understanding of how the α3 helix modulates the ligand binding affinity of the PDZ3 domain is still lacking. In this study, extensive molecular dynamics simulations corroborated with principal component analysis (PCA), ligand binding free energy calculations, energetic frustration analysis and Markov state model analysis are employed to uncover such molecular details. We demonstrate the definite presence of a binding competent closed-like state in the conformational landscape of wild-type PDZ3. The population modulations of this closed state and other binding incompetent states in the landscape due to α3-truncation/mutation of PDZ3 are explored. A correlation between the closed state population and calculated binding free energy is established, which supports the conformation selection mechanism. Covariance analysis identified the presence of correlated motion between two distant loops (β1–β2 and β2–β3) in the wild-type PDZ3 system, which weakened due to truncation/mutation in the distant α3 helix. It has also been observed that whenever the α3 helix was perturbed, the β2–β3 loop got further away from the binding groove and it is found to be correlated with the binding free energy values. Energetic frustration analysis of the PDZ3 domain also showed that the β2–β3 loop is highly frustrated. Finally, MSM analysis revealed a relevant timescale (closed to open state transition), which is similar to the observed experimental signal transduction timescale for the system. These observations led to the conclusion that the distantly located α3 helix plays a pivotal role in regulating the conformational landscape of the PDZ3 domain, determining the ligand binding affinity and resulting in allosteric behavior of the domain. 8. Harnessing plasma-generated reactive species for the synthesis of different phases of molybdenum oxide to study adsorption and photocatalytic activity.

Abstract: This study employs plasma–liquid interaction technique to synthesize different phases of molybdenum oxide using air and argon as plasma-forming gases. In situ plasma-generated nitrogen species primarily NO3−/NO2− and hydrogen species (H+) facilitate the reduction of the molybdenum precursor anion (Mo7O24−). The reduced Mo species subsequently reacts with reactive oxygen species, forming MoO6 octahedra, which is the building block of a molybdenum oxide crystal. Varied concentrations of NO3−/NO2− and H+ species in air and argon plasma treatment significantly influence the growth process. Air plasma synthesis yields hexagonal molybdenum oxide microrods, which upon calcination changes its phase to orthorhombic 2D layered structure. Moreover, the argon plasma synthesized sample exhibits a mixed phase of hexagonal and orthorhombic molybdenum oxide due to the heavy argon ion bombardment, inducing material porosity and surface oxygen vacancies. The mixed-phase material exhibits superior adsorption and photo-degradation towards cationic dye compared to the other two phases. The higher photocatalytic performance may be responsible for the extended lifetime of the photo-generated charge carriers possessed by the mixed-phase material. Abstract: We presented a methodology for detecting acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) based on image data. The approach involves two stages: Feature extraction and classification. Three state-of-the-art transfer learning models, InceptionResnetV2, Densenet121, and VGG16, were utilized to extract features from the images. The extracted features were then processed through a Global Average Pooling layer and concatenated into a flattened tensor. A linear support vector machine (SVM) classifier was trained and tested on the resulting feature set. Performance evaluation was conducted using metrics such as precision, accuracy, recall, and F-measure. The experimental results demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed approach, with the highest accuracy achieved at 91.63% when merging features from VGG16, InceptionResNetV2, and DenseNet121. We contributed to the field by offering a robust methodology for accurate classification and highlighted the potential of transfer learning models in medical image analysis. The findings provided valuable insights for developing automated systems for the early detection and diagnosis of leukemia. Abstract: Parahydrogen-induced polarization (PHIP) is an emerging technique to enhance the signal of stable isotope metabolic contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance (MR). The objective of this study is to continue establishing 1- 13 C-pyruvate-d 3 , signal-enhanced via PHIP, as a hyperpolarized contrast agent, obtained in seconds, to monitor metabolism in human cancer. Our focus was on human pancreatic and colon tumor xenografts. 1- 13 C-vinylpyruvate-d 6 was hydrogenated using parahydrogen. Thereafter, the polarization of the protons was transferred to 13 C. Following a workup procedure, the free hyperpolarized 1- 13 C-pyruvate-d 3 was obtained in clean aqueous solution. After injection into animals bearing either pancreatic or colon cancer xenografts, slice-selective MR spectra were acquired and analyzed to determine rate constants of metabolic conversion into lactate and alanine. 1- 13 C-pyruvate-d 3 proved to follow the increased metabolic rate to lactate and alanine in the tumor xenografts., (© 2024 The Authors. 11. Recent advances in nanomaterials‐based optical sensors for detection of various biomarkers (inorganic species, organic and biomolecules).

Abstract: This review briefly emphasizes the different detection approaches (electrochemical sensors, chemiluminescence, surface‐enhanced Raman scattering), functional nanostructure materials (quantum dots, metal nanoparticles, metal nanoclusters, magnetic nanomaterials, metal oxide nanoparticles, polymer‐based nanomaterials, and carbonaceous nanomaterials) and detection mechanisms. Furthermore, the emphasis of this review is on the integration of functional nanomaterials with optical spectroscopic techniques for the identification of various biomarkers (nucleic acids, glucose, uric acid, oxytocin, dopamine, ascorbic acid, bilirubin, spermine, serotonin, thiocyanate, Pb2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, F−, peptides), and cancer biomarkers (mucin 1, prostate specific antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen, CA15‐3, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, C‐reactive protein, and interleukin‐6). Analytical characteristics of nanomaterials‐based optical sensors are summarized in the tables, providing the insights of nanomaterials‐based optical sensors for biomarkers detection. 12. Laser‐Patterned Carbon‐Supported Graphitic Carbon Nitride Quantum Dots for Flexible Nanozyme‐Based Fluoride Sensor.

Abstract: Graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g‐CNQDs)‐based colorimetric sensors are typically solution‐based and hence incompatible with wearable electronics. Today's competitive technology demands safe and reliable, high‐performance sensors suitable for integration with sophisticated electronics—all at a low cost. Herein, a flexible and reusable solid‐state fluoride ion sensor manufactured by combining the intriguing surface properties of laser‐patterned carbon (LP‐C) with the sensitivity of g‐CNQDs is reported. LP‐C is obtained by direct IR‐laser writing onto polyimide films, and g‐CNQDs are synthesized via a solvent‐free and zero‐waste green process. The hybrid of LP‐C and g‐CNQDs (g‐CNQDs/LP‐C), mimics the natural enzyme horseradish peroxidase and oxidizes the chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'‐tetramethylbenzidine in the presence of H2O2 in acidic media. The highly selective and user‐friendly nanozyme sensors feature a lower limit of detection of 0.568 ± 0.006 × 10−6m (23.8 ± 1.5 µg L−1) with linearity in the range of 0.5 × 10−6 to 100 × 10−6m. A sensing mechanism based on the electronic transitions of g‐CNQDs and LP‐C, the two variants of nitrogen‐containing carbon used in this work, is established. 14. An Investigation of the Thermal Treatment Effects on the Structural, Morphological, and Optical Properties of Hydrothermally Synthesized Hexagonal Molybdenum Oxide Micro-Rods.

Abstract: Hexagonal molybdenum oxide (h-MoO3) micro-rods were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) of the sample, over temperatures ranging from 30°C to 700°C, was carried out to analyze the phase transition characteristics and thermal stability. The effect of post-thermal treatment on the structural, morphological, and optical characteristics of as-prepared samples were investigated in detail. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the sample confirmed the formation of h-MoO3, and the presence of hexagonal-shaped micro-rods were observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystalline phase was transformed to a thermodynamically stable orthorhombic structure (α-MoO3) on thermal treatment, with the micro-rods transformed to flake-like morphology. Elemental composition was confirmed through energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Band gap energy estimated from the absorption spectra lies in the range 2.70–2.94 eV. The material exhibited a superior irreversible thermochromic property, which has been observed as color bands, in the visible to NIR region of the absorption spectra. The phenomenon was well explained with the support of the XPS scan for the Mo-3d and O-1 s states. Furthermore, the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, at an excitation of 330 nm (3.76 eV), showed five emission peaks centered between 360 nm and 550 nm, with enhanced intensity on thermal treatment. Abstract: Early diagnosis of cancer can be achieved by detecting associated biomarkers before the appearance of symptoms. Herein, we have developed an electrochemical immunosensor of ionic liquid tailored to molybdenum trioxide-reduced graphene oxide (MoO 3 -rGO-IL) nanocomposite to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a cancer biomarker. The MoO 3 -rGO-IL nanocomposite has been synthesized in situ via the hydrothermal method. The functionalization of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate IL with MoO 3 -rGO synergistically improves the electrochemical and surface properties of the nanocomposite. The characterization studies revealed that the MoO 3 -rGO-IL nanocomposite is a highly appropriate material for the construction of immunosensors. The material exhibits exceptional electrical conductivity, surface properties, stability, and a large electrochemical effective surface area (13.77×10 -2 cm 2 ) making it ideal for fabricating immunosensors. The quantitative outcome showed that the developed immunosensor (BSA/anti-CEA/MoO 3 -rGO-IL/GCE) possesses excellent sensitivity, broad linearity from 25 fg mL -1 to 100 ng mL -1 , and a low detection limit of 1.19 fg mL -1 . Moreover, the remarkable selectivity, repeatability, and efficiency of detecting CEA in serum specimens demonstrated the feasibility of the immunosensor. 16. Road-blocker HSP disease mutation disrupts pre-organization for ATP hydrolysis in kinesin through a second sphere control.

Abstract: Kinesin motor proteins perform several essential cellular functions powered by the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) hydrolysis reaction. Several single-point mutations in the kinesin motor protein KIF5A have been implicated to hereditary spastic paraplegia disease (HSP), a lethal neurodegenerative disease in humans. In earlier studies, we have shown that a series of HSP-related mutations can impair the kinesin's long-distance displacement or processivity by modulating the order-disorder transition of the linker connecting the heads to the coiled coil. On the other hand, the reduction of kinesin's ATP hydrolysis reaction rate by a distal asparagine-to-serine mutation is also known to cause HSP disease. However, the molecular mechanism of the ATP hydrolysis reaction in kinesin by this distal mutation is still not fully understood. Using classical molecular dynamics simulations combined with quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations, the pre-organization geometry required for optimal hydrolysis in kinesin motor bound to a/ß-tubulin is determined. This optimal geometry has only a single salt-bridge (of the possible two) between Arg203-Glu236, putting a reactive water molecule at a perfect position for hydrolysis. Such geometry is also needed to create the appropriate configuration for proton translocation during ATP hydrolysis. Abstract: Human health is significantly impacted by fluorides in water.Too much fluoride consumption through drinking water causes chronic dental and bones diseases. A trace number of fluorides in drinking water can be determined, which is immensely vital for human health. In the current study, we have designed a visual colorimetric chemosensor assay using the brilliant oxidase mimicking activity of biosynthesized FeMnO4@GQD nanocomposite. FeMnO4@GQD nanocomposites showed excellent mimicking activity in mild acid medium pH‐5, and obtained a Vmax value of 1.71603×10−6 and an important Km value of 0.0684 mM based on Hanes‐Woolf kinetics. The robust nanocomposites were shown to be significant stability for detecting oxidases under conditions. As a consequence, oxidase‐like activity was inhibited in the presence of fluoride ions. A linear correlation was established by the development of blue colour with fluoride ions concentration and appeared at a low limit of detection of 1.2 μg/ml without interfering with other common ions. 20. Lower Tensor to Scalar Ratio in a SUGRA Motivated Inflationary Potential.

Abstract: A scalar potential obtained from the -term in the Supergravity models, which dominates over the term and is mainly responsible for the inflationary phase in the early universe, is studied. The potential with canonical kinetic terms for scalar fields in the Lagrangian has a very slow roll feature in comparison with various other plateau type inflationary potentials. In this case, a much lower tensor-to-scalar ratio () of is achievable. The requirement of the slow roll condition for the inflation potential implies that the up type neutral scalar and the down type neutral scalar in Supergravity models are with equal field strength at the time of inflation. If this relationship holds down to the electroweak scale for the corresponding vacuum expectation values of these fields, then it will indicate a higher SUSY breaking scale around 100 TeV. The predicted values of the inflationary observables are well within the 1- bounds of the recent constraints from Planck'18 observations. The era of reheating after the inflationary phase is also studied, and the bounds on the reheating temperature () is calculated for different equations of states during reheating () for the Planck'18 allowed values of the scalar spectral index (). For our model with and , after satisfying all the bounds due to gravitino overproduction, we can have a large parameter space for , which is well inside the Planck'18 1- bound on . 22. Effect of pulse width on the dynamics of a deflated vesicle in unipolar and bipolar pulsed electric fields.

Abstract: Giant unilamellar vesicles subjected to pulsed direct-current (pulsed-DC) fields are promising biomimetic systems to investigate the electroporation of cells. In strong electric fields, vesicles undergo significant deformation, which strongly alters the transmembrane potential, and consequently the electroporation. Previous theoretical studies investigated the electrodeformation of vesicles in DC fields (which are not pulsed). In this work, we computationally investigate the deformation of a deflated vesicle under unipolar, bipolar, and two-step unipolar pulses and show the sensitive dependence of intermediate shapes on the type of pulse and pulse width. Starting with the stress-free initial shape of a deflated vesicle, which is similar to a prolate spheroid, the analysis is presented for the cases with higher and lower conductivities of the inner fluid medium relative to the outer fluid medium. For the ratio of inner to outer fluid conductivity, σ r = 10, the shape always remains prolate, including when the field is turned off. For σ r = 0.1 , several complex dynamics are observed, such as the prolate-to-oblate (PO), prolate-to-oblate-to-prolate (POP) shape transitions in time depending upon the strength of the field and the pulse properties. In this case, on turning off the field, a metastable oblate equilibrium shape is seen, which seems to be a characteristic of a deflated vesicle leading to POPO transitions. When a two-step unipolar pulse (a combination of a strong and a weak subpulse) is applied, a vesicle can reach an oblate or a prolate final shape depending upon the relative durations of the two subpulses. This study suggests that the transmembrane potential can be regulated using a bipolar pulsed-DC field. It also shows that the shapes admitted in the dynamics of a vesicle depend upon whether the pulse is unipolar or bipolar. Abstract: This article highlights the preparation of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles by adopting a sol–gel auto-combustion route. The prime focus of this study is to investigate the impact of γ-irradiation on the microstructural, morphological, functional, optical, and magnetic characteristics. The resulting NiFe2O4 products have been characterized employing numerous instrumental techniques such as Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), UV–visible spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Physical Properties Measurement System for a variety of γ-ray doses (0, 25, and 100 kGy). FESEM micrographs illustrate the aggregation of ferrite nanoparticles in the pristine NiFe2O4 product having an average particle size of 168 nm, and the surface morphology is altered after exposure to γ-irradiation. XRD spectra have been analyzed employing the Rietveld method, and the results of the XRD investigation reveal the desired phases (cubic spinel phases) of NiFe2O4 with the observation of other transitional phases. The values of the crystallite size are in the range of 34.04–34.71 nm investigated by the Debye–Scherrer (D–S) method. Several microstructural parameters, such as bond length, bond angle, and hopping length, have been determined from the analysis of the Rietveld method. This study reports that γ-irradiations demonstrate a great influence on optical bandgap energy, and it varies from 1.80 to 1.89 eV evaluated via the Kubelka–Munk function. The FTIR measurement depicts a proof for the persistence of Ni–O and Fe–O stretching vibrations within the respective products at positions 365 and 547 cm−1, respectively, thus indicating the successful development of NiFe2O4. The saturation magnetization (MS) of the pristine Ni ferrite product is noticed to be 28.08 emu/g. Abstract: Along with various experimental methods, a combination of theoretical and computational methods is essential to explore different length-scale and time-scale processes in the biological system. The functional mechanism of a dynein, an ATP-fueled motor protein, working in a multiprotein complex, involves a wide range of length/time-scale events. It generates mechanical force from chemical energy and moves on microtubules towards the minus end direction while performing a large number of biological processes including ciliary beating, intracellular material transport, and cell division. Like in the cases of other conventional motor proteins, a combination of experimental techniques including X-crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and single molecular assay have provided a wealth of information about the mechanochemical cycle of a dynein. Dyneins have a large and complex structural architecture and therefore, computational modeling of different aspects of a dynein is extremely challenging. As the process of dynein movement involves varying length and timescales, it demands, like in experiments, a combination of computational methods covering such a wide range of processes for the comprehensive investigation of the mechanochemical cycle. In this review article, we will summarize how the use of state-of-the-art computational methods can provide a detailed molecular understanding of the mechanochemical cycle of the dynein. We implemented all-atom molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics simulations to explore the ATP hydrolysis mechanisms at the primary ATPase site (AAA1) of dynein. To investigate the large-scale conformational changes we employed coarse-grained structure-based molecular dynamics simulations to capture the domain motions. Here we explored the conformational changes upon binding of ATP at AAA1, nucleotide state-dependent regulation of the mechanochemical cycle, and inter-head coordination by inter-head tension. Additionally, implementing a phenomenological theoretical model we explore the force-dependent detachment rate of a motorhead from the microtubule and the principle of multi-dynein cooperation during cargo transport. Stepwise multiple regression, genotypic correlation, and path analysis for yield component characters affecting seed yield were carried out in genotypes belonging to species of Amaranthus to identify the best selection criteria for increased seed yield. Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated different parameter models were able to predict seed yield in A. hypochondriacus L, A. cruentus L, and A. dubius (Mart. Ex Thell.). Path coefficients indicated one thousand seed weight and stem diameter should be used in selection aimed at improving seed yield in A. hypochondriacus. Thousand seed weight and the number of leaves could be effective selection criteria for seed yield improvement in A. cruentus. The number of days to flowering could serve as an indicator for indirect selection for high seed-yielding genotypes in A dubius. Abstract: Untreated waste materials discharged from the pharmaceutical industries due to lack of legislative regulations may cast the unfavorable consequences within the environment. The present study endeavored to stress the proliferation of harmful microorganisms in both treated and untreated pharmaceutical wastes along with the assessment of the drug resistance patterns of the isolates. The existence of the total viable bacteria and fungi was estimated up to 109 and 106 colony forming unit (cfu)/mL, respectively, in treated pharmaceutical wastes. For the untreated wastes, the bacterial and the fungal load were 106 and 10³cfu/mL, respectively. Both categories of samples were found to be contaminated with an array of pathogenic bacteria including Klebsiella spp., Vibrio spp., Bacillus spp., and Staphylococcus spp. Interestingly, an elevated range of pathogenic contamination was noticed in the treated samples up to 105 cfu/mL while a comparatively reduced microbial load was observed in the untreated samples within a range of 10²-104 cfu/mL. Most of the isolates exhibited resistance against commonly used antibiotics while several isolates showed multi-drug resistance. Abstract: We have developed a working strategy for accurate enantiomeric excess ( ee) determination based on induced helical aggregation of achiral perylenebisimide (PBI) dyes. PBI dyes functionalized with boronic acid moieties were shown to be effective chirality sensors for α-hydroxy carboxylates. Seven α-hydroxy carboxylates tested showed strong induced Cotton effects in the perylene absorption region around λ=500 nm, which were utilized for enantiomeric excess determination and chemo-discrimination of the analytes, with an average absolute error of 2 % in ee determination and 100 % correctness in analyte classification. Responses in the absorption spectra, which arise from the guest-enhanced aggregation, allow the determination of the sample concentration, thus enabling analysis of samples of unknown concentration and ee. 32. Hypertension and respiratory health in biomass smoke-exposed premenopausal Indian women.

Abstract: We aimed to examine how chronic biomass smoke exposure affects prevalence of different respiratory symptoms, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung function decrement; and how these changes in pulmonary health are related to pollutant levels inside the kitchen. We also investigated if these changes are associated with presence of hypertension. Two hundred and forty-four women using biomass fuel (median age 34 year) and 236 age-matched control women who cooked with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) were enrolled for this purpose. Questionnaire survey was used for respiratory symptom prevalence, spirometry for lung function assessment, and laser photometer for particulate matter <10 and 2.5 μm in diameter (PM and PM, respectively) in cooking areas. Biomass users had higher prevalence of upper and lower ( p < 0.05) respiratory symptoms, poorer lung function (64.3 vs. 26.3 % in control, p < 0.05), and higher prevalence of COPD (6.6 vs. 1.7 % in control, p < 0.05) and hypertension (29.5 vs. 11.0 % in control, p < 0.05). Significant positive association between exposure variables and respiratory symptoms, lung function measurements, COPD prevalence, and hypertension were noticed, after adjusting for potential confounders. 33. Surface modification of cellulose fibers by layer-by-layer self-assembly of lignosulfonates and TiO2 nanoparticles: Effect on photocatalytic abilities and paper properties.

Abstract: Depositing of TiO 2 nanoparticles on cellulose fiber surface has potential technological applications in the field of photocatalysis. With this motivation, multilayers composed of lignosulfonates (LS) and TiO 2 nanoparticles were constructed on cellulose fiber surface via layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential measurement and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the LS/TiO 2 multilayers on cellulose fiber surface. Moreover, the photocatalytic activities of modified cellulose fibers (decomposition of methyl orange and antibacterial test) were investigated. The decomposition efficiency of methyl orange for a (LS/TiO 2) 5 multilayer modified cellulose fibers was 74.7 % under 5 h UV irradiation. Photocatalytic decomposition efficiency of methyl orange by LS/TiO 2 multilayer modified cellulose fibers under the same UV irradiation time increased linearly with the number of bilayers. Antibacterial tests results revealed that the cellulose fibers modified with LS/TiO 2 multilayers exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against E.coil. The degree of E.coil growth inhibition for a (LS/TiO 2) 5 multilayer modified cellulose fiber reached as high as 93 %. In addition, the effect of LS/TiO 2 multilayers on properties of handsheets made from modified cellulose fibers was also considered. The air permeability of the handsheet prepared from fibers modified with TiO 2/LS multilayers had 6.1–24.3 % higher compared with that of handsheet prepared from original fibers. The wetting properties measurement results demonstrated that the water contact angle of handsheet oscillated with the increasing number of layers depended on building block which was in the outermost layer. Methods: This randomized comparative study was carried out in 100 women who were at or beyond 37 weeks of gestation with cephalic presentation, had PROM more than 12 hours with bishop's score less than six. Out of 100 women 50 were induced with 50 g of oral misoprostol 4 hours apart (max 6 doses) and other 50 received intravenous oxytocin infusion (max 3 pints). Results: The parity, mean bishop's score of two groups were comparable. Both misoprostol and oxytocin group showed similar induction to delivery interval (8.68 hrs ± 3.22hours vs. 7.61hours ± 2.84hours, P value was 0.08). Maximum number (52%) of patients responded to single dose of misoprostol in misoprostol group. Whereas in oxytocin group 40% of primigravidae required 10 units and 47% of multigravidae required 2.5 units of oxytocin. Majority of women in both the groups delivered vaginally but oxytocin group had slightly increased number of LSCS and one instrumental delivery. Meconium stained liquor was seen more in oxytocin group than misoprostol. Neonatal outcome was comparable in both groups. 36. Increased cardiovascular risk due to systemic inflammatory changes and enhanced oxidative stress in urban Indian women.

Abstract: The study was undertaken to elucidate the inflammation- and oxidative stress-mediated deterioration of cardiovascular health in urban women exposed to ambient air pollution from vehicular and industrial emissions. A total of 556 urban women (median age, 34 years) and 514 age-matched control women who resided in the rural areas were enrolled. Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-8 (IL-8) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay as markers of inflammation. Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by leukocytes was measured by flow cytometry and erythrocytic superoxide dismutase (SOD) was measured by spectrophotometry. Hypertension was diagnosed following the Seventh Report of the Joint Committee. On the days of sampling, data about particulate matter of diameter less than 10 μm (PM) in city was obtained from website of State Pollution Control Board and that in rural ambience was measured using real-time aerosol monitor. Compared with control, urban women were exposed to higher levels of ambient air pollution; their serum contained significantly higher levels of IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and CRP. ROS generation was increased by 49 % while SOD was depleted by 34.9 %. Urban women were more hypertensive compared to their rural counterparts. PM levels were positively associated with inflammatory markers, oxidative stress, and hypertension. Exposure to increased levels of ambient air pollution, which are much higher than the set standard levels, predisposes urban women to increased risk of deteriorating cardiovascular health. Platelet P-selectin (P-sel) expression and platelet-leukocyte aggregation were determined using flow cytometry. Platelet aggregation by collagen was measured by aggregometer. Soluble P-selectin (sP-sel), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-8, -6, -10 (IL-8, IL-6, IL-10), neutrophil-activating protein-2 (NAP-2), C-reactive protein (CRP), oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) in plasma were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by leukocytes was measured by flow cytometry, and erythrocyte content of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was measured by spectrophotometry. Particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5 μm (PM) in indoor air was measured by real-time aerosol monitor. Compared with control, biomass users with COPD had increased expression of platelet P-selectin, elevated levels of sP-sel, oxLDL, TNF-α, IL-8, IL-6, NAP-2, CRP, lowered IL-10 and more circulating platelet-neutrophil ( p < 0.0001) and platelet-monocyte ( p < 0.0001) aggregates. ROS generation was increased by 19.5% while SOD was depleted by 32% in women with COPD. Biomass smoke-induced COPD is associated with excess cardiovascular risk via oxidative stress, platelet activation, and inflammation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Indeed, the scientific and engineering leadership of the United States and its allies in the twentieth century played key roles in the successful outcomes of both World War II and the Cold War, sparing the world the twin horrors of fascism and tota- tarian communism, and fueling the economic prosperity that followed. - day, as the United States and its allies once again find themselves at war, President Truman's words ring as true as they did a half-century ago. The goal set out in the Truman Administration of maintaining leadership in s- ence has remained the policy of the U. S. government to this day. Dr. John Marburger, the Director of the Office of Science and Technology (OSTP) in the Executive Office of the President, made remarks to that effect during 2 his confirmation hearings in October 2001. The United States needs metrics for measuring its success in meeting this goal of maintaining leadership in science and technology.
