Pollen is a source of protein, lipids, vitamins and minerals for bees and other flower-visiting insects. The composition of macro- and micronutrients of pollen vary among different plant species. Honey bees are long-distance foragers, collecting nectar and pollen from plants within several kilometers of their hive. Availability of pollen within the foraging range of honey bees is highly dynamic, changing seasonally, and across different landscapes. In the present study, the aim was to investigate the composition of pollen collected by honey bees in rural-urban landscape mosaics typical of Northern Europe. Samples of corbiculate pollen were collected 3-9 times during the growing season by citizen scientist bee keepers from a total of 25 observation apiaries across Denmark in 2014-2015. Palynological analysis was conducted identifying 500 pollen grains per sample to pollen type (mostly plant genus). Pollen diversity denoted the number of different pollen types in a sample, while relative abundance was calculated as the proportional representation of a pollen type, if found in >1% of the sample. The quantity of pollen types across study years and sites was measured as the occurrence of each pollen type (number of samples with the pollen type present) and abundance (total number of pollen grains). Pollen diversity was highly variable, with effects of season, year, and area of green urban spaces. In terms of quantity, a few key pollen types occurred repeatedly and abundantly in the samples. Only 17 pollen types were present in >15 samples. These pollen types were consistent across study years and different landscapes. Pollen diversity may impact colony health, and hence foraging decisions by honey bees, especially in late summer. Recent decades have seen a surge in awareness about insect pollinator declines. Social bees receive the most attention, but most flower-visiting species are lesser known, non-bee insects. Nocturnal flower visitors, e.g. moths, are especially difficult to observe and largely ignored in pollination studies. Clearly, achieving balanced monitoring of all pollinator taxa represents a major scientific challenge. Here, we use time-lapse cameras for season-wide, day-and-night pollinator surveillance of Trifolium pratense (L.; red clover) in an alpine grassland. We reveal the first evidence to suggest that moths, mainly Noctua pronuba (L.; large yellow underwing), pollinate this important wildflower and forage crop, providing 34% of visits (bumblebees: 61%). This is a remarkable finding; moths have received no recognition throughout a century of T. pratense pollinator research. We conclude that despite a non-negligible frequency and duration of nocturnal flower visits, nocturnal pollinators of T. pratense have been systematically overlooked. We further show how the relationship between visitation and seed set may only become clear after accounting for moth visits. As such, population trends in moths, as well as bees, could profoundly affect T. pratense seed yield. Ultimately, camera surveillance gives fair representation to non-bee pollinators and lays a foundation for automated monitoring of species interactions in future.

Seventy five percent of the world's food crops benefit from insect pollination. Hence, there has been increased interest in how global change drivers impact this critical ecosystem service. Because standardized data on crop pollination are rarely available, we are limited in our capacity to understand the variation in pollination benefits to crop yield, as well as to anticipate changes in this service, develop predictions, and inform management actions. Here, we present CropPol, a dynamic, open, and global database on crop pollination. It contains measurements recorded from 202 crop studies, covering 3,394 field observations, 2,552 yield measurements (i.e., berry mass, number of fruits, and fruit density [kg/ha], among others), and 47,752 insect records from 48 commercial crops distributed around the globe. CropPol comprises 32 of the 87 leading global crops and commodities that are pollinator dependent. Malus domestica is the most represented crop (32 studies), followed by Brassica napus (22 studies), Vaccinium corymbosum (13 studies), and Citrullus lanatus (12 studies). The most abundant pollinator guilds recorded are honey bees (34.22% counts), bumblebees (19.19%), flies other than Syrphidae and Bombyliidae (13.18%), other wild bees (13.13%), beetles (10.97%), Syrphidae (4.87%), and Bombyliidae (0.05%). Locations comprise 34 countries distributed among Europe (76 studies), North America (60), Latin America and the Caribbean (29), Asia (20), Oceania (10), and Africa (7). Sampling spans three decades and is concentrated on 2001-2005 (21 studies), 2006-2010 (40), 2011-2015 (88), and 2016-2020 (50). This is the most comprehensive open global data set on measurements of crop flower visitors, crop pollinators and pollination to date, and we encourage researchers to add more datasets to this database in the future. Recent studies have shown that sub-lethal doses of herbicides may affect plant flowering, however, no study has established a direct relationship between the concentrations of deposited herbicide and plant flowering. Here the aim was to investigate the relationship between herbicide spray drift deposited on non-target plants and plant flowering in a realistic agro-ecosystem setting. The concentrations of the herbicide glyphosate deposited on plants were estimated by measuring the concentration of a dye tracer applied together with the herbicide. The estimated maximal and average deposition of glyphosate within the experimental area corresponded to 30 g glyphosate/ha (2.08% of the label rate of 1440 g a.i./ha) and 2.4 g glyphosate/ha (0.15% label rate), respectively, and the concentrations decreased rapidly with increasing distance from the spraying track. However, there were not a unique relation between distance and deposition, which indicate that heterogeneities of turbulence, wind speed and/or direction can strongly influence the deposition from 1 min to another during spraying. The effects of glyphosate on cumulative flower numbers and flowering time were modelled using Gompertz growth models on four non-target species. Glyphosate had a significantly negative effect on the cumulative number of flowers on Trifolium pratense and Lotus corniculatus, whereas there were no significant effects on Trifolium repens, and a positive, but non-significant, effect on number of flowers on Cichorium intybus. Glyphosate did not affect the flowering time of any of the four species significantly. Lack of floral resources is known to be of major importance for pollinator declines. A recurrent concern in nature conservation is the potential competition for forage plants between wild bees and managed honey bees. Specifically, that the highly sophisticated system of recruitment and large perennial colonies of honey bees quickly exhaust forage resources leading to the local extirpation of wild bees. However, different species of bees show different preferences for forage plants. We here summarize known forage plants for honey bees and wild bee species at national scale in Denmark. Our focus is on floral resources shared by honey bees and wild bees, with an emphasis on both threatened wild bee species and foraging specialist species. Across all 292 known bee species from Denmark, a total of 410 plant genera were recorded as forage plants. These included 294 plant genera visited by honey bees and 292 plant genera visited by different species of wild bees. Honey bees and wild bees share 176 plant genera in Denmark. Comparing the pairwise niche overlap for individual bee species, no significant relationship was found between their overlap and forage specialization or conservation status. Network analysis of the bee-plant interactions placed honey bees aside from most other bee species, specifically the module containing the honey bee had fewer links to any other modules, while the remaining modules were more highly inter-connected. Despite the lack of predictive relationship from the pairwise niche overlap, data for individual species could be summarized. Consequently, we have identified a set of operational parameters that, based on a high foraging overlap (>70%) and unfavorable conservation status (Vulnerable+Endangered+Critically Endangered), can guide both conservation actions and land management decisions in proximity to known or suspected populations of these species., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Prior to the arrival of Europeans in North America, forest and grasslands individually covered a 3rd of the conterminous United States; however, following the colonial and pioneer periods, respectively, these land cover categories were reduced to 70% and 50% of their original prominence. The dominant driving force for native land conversion was agriculture, which expanded exponentially from the Atlantic to the Pacific, comprising over half the total land area of America at its peak in 1950. However, farmland area has subsequently declined by 25%, so what has been driving native plant declines north of the 30th latitudinal parallel over the past 75 years? Analysis of recovery plans issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service indicates that of the over 900 plant species "listed" as threatened and endangered the primary driver of decline was invasive species, followed by habitat alteration, and development, which collectively accounted for 93.2% of the primary drivers for listed species. In Canada, these three drivers of decline were the primary drivers for 81% of listed species. Comparatively, herbicides were identified as the primary or secondary driver in 13 out of 1124 cases (1.2%). Given that agricultural land area is contracting in the U.S. and Canada, there appears to be a misconception that agrochemicals are the seminal cause of native plant decline. Context: Urban areas are rapidly expanding, increasing anthropogenic pressure on global biodiversity. There are many threats associated with urbanisation, such as habitat loss and the spread of invasive species. Thus, to effectively manage urban greenspaces for native species, we need to understand species assemblages, and the factors that influence their diversity. Aims: We assessed how assemblages of terrestrial vertebrate species differ across urbanisation levels in northern Sydney, Australia, and whether habitat characteristics influenced them. We also investigated the role of invasive species in these areas by comparing daily activity patterns between invasive and native species. Methods: Nine forest (dry sclerophyll) patches, surrounded by three urbanisation levels (high-urban, mid-urban and low-urban), each with five motion-sensor cameras, were used to survey terrestrial fauna in northern Sydney from May to July 2023. Five vegetation variables and eight spatial variables were also recorded at each patch. Key results: There were differences in terrestrial vertebrate assemblages across the three urbanisation levels, with more invasive species, including red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and black rats (Rattus rattus), in high-urban areas. We also found native species assemblages (particularly superb lyrebirds, Menura novaehollandiae ; long-nosed bandicoots, Perameles nasuta ; and bush rats, Rattus fuscipes) to differ with tall and low shrub cover, whereas invasive species did not differ. Furthermore, mean activity peaks did not differ between red foxes and a critical weight range (CWR) mammal was recorded in high-urban sites. Last, we observed a significant negative relationship between invasive species richness and native species diversity. Conclusions: Urbanisation has a strong effect on the assemblages, activity and interactions of native and invasive terrestrial vertebrate species in Sydney. Whereas remnant patches may support native species, the prevalence of invasive fauna in areas that are more highly urbanised may compound other factors affecting biodiversity. Implications: This study has provided a baseline understanding of urban terrestrial vertebrate assemblages in northern Sydney, and has shown that mid-urban areas may be good candidates for reintroduction sites. Our findings can be used to guide management actions to support the conservation or re-establishment of native species in the region or other urban areas. The role of hawkmoths in pollination is surprisingly understudied in tropical Asia and most of the studies related to flower visitation recordings lack a robust assessment. From India, very few research papers could be reviewed on the pollination ecology of hawkmoths. Herein, we analyzed the interactions of 109 individuals in 39 hawkmoth species to study their role as pollen transporters and potential pollinators. 67 individuals (61.47%), accounting for 29 species (74.35%), are found to be pollen carrier moths (PCM). The hawkmoths transported pollen from 16 plant families, with Ericaceae dominating the pollen composition (33.37% of total pollen grains). The pollen spectra (based on pollen abundance and relative pollen frequency) revealed that 44 PCM (18 species) came from Macroglossinae, followed by 16 PCM (7 species) from Smerinthinae, and 7 PCM (4 species) from Sphinginae. Macroglossinae transported pollen of 14 plant families. The value of selectivity (H2’) is 0.77 for the pollen transportation network and 0.36 for the moth-plant visitation network. We followed the refined method of pollen extraction from proboscides, rather than swabbing body parts, which enabled us to assess pollen carrying capacity in a refined way. Considering the scenario of the declining global pollinators, largely affecting crop production, moths are the least concerned insects for conservation and management. The outcome of the present study will help in strengthening the baseline information for expanding plant-moth interaction network-related studies and considering the least concerned groups of insects in the conservation policies. Background: Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a major disease affecting cereal crops including wheat, barley, rye, oats and maize. Its predominant causal agent is the ascomycete fungus Fusarium graminearum, which infects the spikes and thereby reduces grain yield and quality. The frequency and severity of FHB epidemics has increased in recent years, threatening global food security. Spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS) is an alternative technique for tackling this devastating disease through foliar spraying with exogenous double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to silence specific pathogen genes via RNA interference. This has the advantage of avoiding transgenic approaches, but several aspects of the technology require further development to make it a viable field-level management tool. One such existing knowledge gap is how dsRNA spraying affects the microbiota of the host plants. Results: We found that the diversity, structure and composition of the bacterial microbiota are subject to changes depending on dsRNA targeted and host studied, while the fungal microbiota in the phyllosphere remained relatively unchanged upon spraying with dsRNA. Analyses of fungal co-occurrence patterns also showed that F. graminearum established itself among the fungal communities through negative interactions with neighbouring fungi. Through these analyses, we have also found bacterial and fungal genera ubiquitous in the phyllosphere, irrespective of dsRNA treatment. These results suggest that although rarer and less abundant microbial species change upon dsRNA spray, the ubiquitous bacterial and fungal components of the phyllosphere in wheat and barley remain unchanged. Conclusion: We show for the first time the effects of exogenous dsRNA spraying on bacterial and fungal communities in the wheat and barley phyllospheres using a high-throughput amplicon sequencing approach. The results obtained further validate the safety and target-specificity of SIGS and emphasize its potential as an environmentally friendly option for managing Fusarium head blight in wheat and barley. The genus Lindera Thunb. (Lauraceae Juss., nom. cons.) consists of ca. 100 species of shrubs and trees with economic value for medicinal drugs as well as oils used in aromatics, soaps, and biodiesel. Only a few Lindera species have received attention as ornamental plants, but considerable interspecific diversity in habit, foliage, and fruit offer significant potential to plant breeders and horticulture. We used flow cytometry to determine genome sizes of 100 accessions representing 23 temperate Lindera taxa and estimated ploidy level for each sample. In addition, we assessed stomatal size, density, and specific leaf area among accessions. We found a nearly 12-fold difference in 2C DNA context among accessions. We confirmed previous reports of diploid and tetraploid Lindera taxa, and present evidence of triploid (L. glauca (Seibold & Succ.) Blume and L. neesiana (Wall. ex Nees) Kurz), hexaploid (L. angustifolia W.C. Cheng and L. umbellata Thunb.), and octoploid (L. angustifolia, L. angustifolia var. glabra (Nakai) J.M.H.Shaw, and L. salicifolia (Blume) Boerl.) taxa for the first time. Although most taxa sampled were diploid, our findings indicate multiple cytotypes exist for L. angustifolia (6× and 8×) and L. umbellata (2× and 6×). Ploidy level had a significant positive relationship with stomatal size, but not stomatal density nor specific leaf area. Overall, these findings provide insight for plant evolutionary biologists, taxonomists, and breeders interested in Lindera, which remains to be resolved phylogenetically and has not been utilized in ornamental breeding programs. In addition, these data are relevant to plant ecologists and conservationists, particularly in North America where the Laurel wilt pathogen is threatening Lauraceae taxa, including the endangered species Lindera melissifolia and L. subcoriacea. Background and aims: Traditional intercropping of tall and short crops often maintain productivity at the expense of the fitness of the short crop due to planting orientation. There is a need to understand how light interception as influenced by row orientation, affects the vertical allocation of photosynthesized carbon, and how this impacts the rhizosphere microbiota of short crops. This understanding would allow for the optimization of aboveground design to utilize the belowground microbiota for plant and soil health in diversified cropping systems. Methods: We manipulated the row orientation (east-west vs. north-south) of peanut and maize in a field and conducted simulated pot experiment where peanut plants were shaded. By using 13C tracer approach and DNA stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) method, we quantified C allocation by peanuts in its rhizosphere including the rhizosphere microorganisms. Moreover, by combining high-throughput sequencing and bacterial cultivation, we evaluated photosynthesized carbon driven the change of rhizosphere microbial composition and its interaction for fungal pathogen resistance. Results: Field intercropping in the north-south orientation increased peanut photosynthetically active radiation to over two times compared to the east-west orientation. The higher light interception increased the relative abundance of photosynthesized carbon which selectively enriched the rhizosphere biomarker Burkholderia to effectively suppressed the pathogenic fungus Alternaria alstroemeriae. Conclusion: North-south row orientation of peanut and maize intercropping can enhance the allocation of photosynthesized carbon in peanut rhizosphere by changing the light interception. The more photosynthesized carbon triggers the reshape of rhizosphere microbiota and induce beneficial Burkholderia to antagonize peanut pathogen to optimize peanut health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most ecological networks are analysed as static structures, where all observed species and links are present simultaneously. However, this is over-simplified, because networks are temporally dynamical. We resolved an arctic, entire-season plant-flower visitor network into a temporal series of 1-day networks and compared the properties with its static equivalent based on data pooled over the entire season. Several properties differed. The nested link pattern in the static network was blurred in the dynamical version, because the characteristic long nestedness tail of flower-visitor specialists got stunted in the dynamical networks. This tail comprised a small food web of pollinators, parasitoids and hyper-parasitoids. The dynamical network had strong time delays in the transmission of direct and indirect effects among species. Twenty percent of all indirect links were impossible in the dynamical network. Consequently, properties and thus also robustness of ecological networks cannot be deduced from the static topology alone.

Southern Africa's floral, topographic and climatic diversity manifests in distinctive bioregions where aerobiology studies are needed to manage allergenic health problems, especially in urban areas. Previous studies underline different seasonal pollen fluctuations for the biomes, encouraging regional studies. These studies have been previously restricted to large cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria whereas small cities such as Potchefstroom in the North-West province are understudied. The South African Pollen Monitoring Network (SAPNET) seeks to fill this lacuna, enhancing ecological and health-related knowledge, with regard to the allergenicity of the recorded pollen. Here, we investigate plant phenology and resulting pollen production within the Grassland and Savanna biomes around Potchefstroom, a fast-growing city in the North West province, comparing it with other SAPNET sites. As a SAPNET initiative, pollen monitoring in Potchefstroom involved monthly collections using a Lanzoni 7-day spore trap over 13 months from December 2022 to 2023. This facilitated the development of a preliminary pollen calendar and a pollen atlas, detailing pollen types' morphology, ecology, pollination modes, and allergenicity. Initial findings revealed Potchefstroom's pollen calendar, with tree pollen (60% of the Annual Pollen Index (API)) mainly from northern hemisphere species such as Cupressus (c. 11% of API) and Platanus (c. 18%), which released pollen in spring. Grass pollen was predominant from November to April (c. 18% of API). Potchefstroom recorded South Africa's highest levels of Ambrosia pollen (c. 7% of API), a major allergen, in March and April. Noteworthy is the unusual abundance of pollen of the neophyte Ulmus (c. 14%) in December. This study highlights the pollen patterns of the Grassland and Savanna biomes around Potchefstroom. The region, with its mosaic of urban spaces, natural grass-/woodland, and agricultural land, exhibits distinct characteristics when contrasted with major, more densely populated cities such as Bloemfontein, Pretoria, and Johannesburg. Ecological networks are complexes of interacting species, but not all potential links among species are realized. Unobserved links are either missing or forbidden. Missing links exist, but require more sampling or alternative ways of detection to be verified. Forbidden links remain unobservable, irrespective of sampling effort. They are caused by linkage constraints. We studied one Arctic pollination network and two Mediterranean seed-dispersal networks. In the first, for example, we recorded flower-visit links for one full season, arranged data in an interaction matrix and got a connectance C of 15 per cent. Interaction accumulation curves documented our sampling of interactions through observation of visits to be robust. Then, we included data on pollen from the body surface of flower visitors as an additional link 'currency'. This resulted in 98 new links, missing from the visitation data. Thus, the combined visit-pollen matrix got an increased C of 20 per cent. For the three networks, C ranged from 20 to 52 per cent, and thus the percentage of unobserved links (100 - C) was 48 to 80 per cent; these were assumed forbidden because of linkage constraints and not missing because of under-sampling. Phenological uncoupling (i.e. non-overlapping phenophases between interacting mutualists) is one kind of constraint, and it explained 22 to 28 per cent of all possible, but unobserved links. Increasing phenophase overlap between species increased link probability, but extensive overlaps were required to achieve a high probability. Other kinds of constraint, such as size mismatch and accessibility limitations, are briefly addressed.

Background: Flower visiting insects provide a vitally important pollination service for many crops and wild plants. Recent decline of pollinating insects due to anthropogenic modification of habitats and climate, in particular from 1950's onwards, is a major and widespread concern. However, few studies document the extent of declines in species diversity, and no studies have previously quantified local abundance declines. We here make a quantitative assessment of recent historical changes in bumblebee assemblages by comparing contemporary and historical survey data., Methodology/principal Findings: We take advantage of detailed, quantitative historical survey data from the 1930's on bumblebee (Bombus spp.) abundances and species composition in red clover (Trifolium pratense) fields, an important floral resource and an attractant of all bumblebee species. We used the historical survey data as a pre-industrialization baseline, and repeated the same sampling protocol at nearly the same localities at present, hence setting up a historical experiment. We detected historical changes in abundances (bees/m(2)) of both workers (the "pollinatory units") and queens (effective population size), in addition to species composition. In particular, long-tongued bumblebee species showed consistent and dramatic declines in species richness and abundances throughout the flowering season of red clover, while short-tongued species were largely unaffected. Of 12 Bombus species observed in the 1930's, five species were not observed at present. The latter were all long-tongued, late-emerging species., Conclusions/significance: Because bumblebees are important pollinators, historical changes in local bumblebee assemblages are expected to severely affect plant reproduction, in particular long-tubed species, which are pollinated by long-tongued bumblebees.

1. Co-existing plants and flower-visiting animals often form complex interaction networks. A long-standing question in ecology and evolutionary biology is how to detect nonrandom subsets (compartments, blocks, modules) of strongly interacting species within such networks. Here we use a network analytical approach to (i) detect modularity in pollination networks, (ii) investigate species composition of modules, and (iii) assess the stability of modules across sites. 2. Interactions between entomophilous plants and their flower-visitors were recorded throughout the flowering season at three heathland sites in Denmark, separated by >or= 10 km. Among sites, plant communities were similar, but composition of flower-visiting insect faunas differed. Visitation frequencies of visitor species were recorded as a measure of insect abundance. 3. Qualitative (presence-absence) interaction networks were tested for modularity. Modules were identified, and species classified into topological roles (peripherals, connectors, or hubs) using 'functional cartography by simulated annealing', a method recently developed by Guimerà & Amaral (2005a). 4. All networks were significantly modular. Each module consisted of 1-6 plant species and 18-54 insect species. Interactions aggregated around one or two hub plant species, which were largely identical at the three study sites. 5. Insect species were categorized in taxonomic groups, mostly at the level of orders. When weighted by visitation frequency, each module was dominated by one or few insect groups. This pattern was consistent across sites. 6. Our study adds support to the conclusion that certain plant species and flower-visitor groups are nonrandomly and repeatedly associated. Within a network, these strongly interacting subgroups of species may exert reciprocal selection pressures on each other. Thus, modules may be candidates for the long-sought key units of co-evolution.

In natural communities, species and their interactions are often organized as nonrandom networks, showing distinct and repeated complex patterns. A prevalent, but poorly explored pattern is ecological modularity, with weakly interlinked subsets of species (modules), which, however, internally consist of strongly connected species. The importance of modularity has been discussed for a long time, but no consensus on its prevalence in ecological networks has yet been reached. Progress is hampered by inadequate methods and a lack of large datasets. We analyzed 51 pollination networks including almost 10,000 species and 20,000 links and tested for modularity by using a recently developed simulated annealing algorithm. All networks with >150 plant and pollinator species were modular, whereas networks with <50 species were never modular. Both module number and size increased with species number. Each module includes one or a few species groups with convergent trait sets that may be considered as coevolutionary units. Species played different roles with respect to modularity. However, only 15% of all species were structurally important to their network. They were either hubs (i.e., highly linked species within their own module), connectors linking different modules, or both. Despite a lot of efforts devoted to construct efficient microbiomes, there are still major obstacles to moving from the lab to industrial applications due to the inapplicability of existing technologies or limited understanding of microbiome variation regularity. Here we show a domestication strategy to cultivate an effciient and resilient functional microbiome for addressing phenolic wastewater challenges, which involves directional domestication in shaker, laboratory water test in small-scale, gas test in pilot scale, water test in pilot scale, and engineering application in industrial scale. The domestication process includes the transition from water to gas, which provided complex transient environment for screening of a more adaptable and robust microbiome, thereby mitigating the performance disparities encountered when transitioning from laboratory experimentation to industrial engineering applications. Within the domestication and application processes for treating phenolic resin wastewater, a powerful functional microbiome was built by self-assembly. This leads to an augmented biodiversity and the development of more intricate phenol and formaldehyde metabolic pathways. The incorporation of increased stochastic processes and random network characteristics further suggested the stability of the microbial community during the application phase. This study elucidates the self-assembly process of microbial communities during the artificial construction process, showcasing their adaptive evolution under different adverse conditions. Background: The changes of microbial community on tobacco leaves are affected by several factors during fermentation. However, the relative contribution of different factors in determining microbial community is not clear. This study investigated the effects of fermentation time (fermentation for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months), leaf position (middle and top tobacco leaves) and fermentation site (Longyan and Xiamen warehouses) on bacterial community of tobacco leaves using 16 S rDNA sequencing. Results: The results demonstrated that fermentation time had a much stronger impact on bacterial diversity, composition, co-occurrence network and functional profiles than leaf position and fermentation site. With the fermentation progressed, the difference of bacterial community between middle and top tobacco leaves was gradually reduced or even disappeared. The bacterial community diversity and network complexity at three, six and nine months of fermentation were significantly lower than those at fermentation initiation. Specific bacterial genera with desired functions were recruited at different fermentation stages, such as Terribacillus, Pantoea and Franconibacter at three or six months of fermentation and Pseudomonas at nine months of fermentation. The recruited microorganisms would form biofilms on tobacco leaves and compete for polysaccharide or protein substances to accelerate the degradation of tobacco macromolecular substances. The paper examines domestic 'femicide' in Italy. Under an exploratory statistical approach, we investigated: (1) difficulties and strategies for reconstructing a historical dataset on family crimes for studies over time; (2) the main causes of family femicides; and (3) groups of actors driven by the same motivations interpreted as patterns of criminal behavior. First, we integrated and systematised data from official sources to guarantee comparison over time; second, we used Social Network Analysis properties to study the relationships between 'motivations' and 'victim-perpetrator'; and third, we applied and compared community detection algorithms to the linkages between 'actors' and 'motivations' to detect groups of criminal behavior. From 2015 to 2020 in Italy, the cohabitant was the major family murderer, but in 2020, passion motivation also surfaced. Mental problems connected to parents-children and cohabitants, jealousy of ex-partners or rivals, and economic issues for blood relations were observed in 2015. Ecological networks of species interactions are popular and provide powerful analytical tools for understanding variation in community structure and ecosystem functioning. However, network analyses and commonly used metrics such as nestedness and connectance have also attracted criticism. One major concern is that observed patterns are misinterpreted as niche properties such as specialization, whereas they may instead merely reflect variation in sampling, abundance, and/or diversity. As a result, studies potentially draw flawed conclusions about ecological function, stability, or coextinction risks. We highlight potential biases in analyzing and interpreting species-interaction networks and review the solutions available to overcome them, among which we particularly recommend the use of null models that account for species abundances. We show why considering variation across species and networks is important for understanding species interactions and their consequences. We studied spatial variation in the effects of environment and network size on species positions and roles in multiple flea–mammal networks from four biogeographic realms. We asked whether species positions (measured as species strength [SS], the degree of interaction specialization [d′], and the eigenvector centrality [C]) or the roles of fleas and their hosts in the interaction networks: (a) are repeatable/conserved within a flea or a host species; (b) vary in dependence on environmental variables and/or network size; and (c) the effects of environment and network size on species positions or roles in the networks depend on species traits. The repeatability analysis of species position indices for 441 flea and 429 host species, occurring in at least two networks, demonstrated that the repeatability of SS, d′, and C within a species was significant, although not especially high, suggesting that the indices' values were affected by local factors. The majority of flea and host species in the majority of networks demonstrated a peripheral role. A value of at least one index of species position was significantly affected by environmental variables or network size in 41 and 36, respectively, of the 52 flea and 52 host species that occurred in multiple networks. In both fleas and hosts, the occurrence of the significant effect of environment or network size on at least one index of species position, but not on a species' role in a network, was associated with some species traits. Soil amendments play a pivotal role in regulating rhizosphere microbial communities, which is essential for maintaining robust plant growth under adverse environmental conditions. However, the microbial mechanisms that underlie the impact of biochar on phytoremediation performance remain incompletely understood in the context of different application rates. Here, we compared the phytoremediation performance, rhizosphere microbial community characteristics, and microbial interactions in Salix psammophila across different biochar application rates (1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%) in Cd-contaminated soil. Applying 5% biochar increased plant biomass by 10.02%, root activity by 183.82%, and Cd accumulation by 13.65%. Lower biochar rates (1% and 3%) decreased Cd accumulation in plants by 21.89% and 42.05%, respectively, compared to the control. Rhizosphere soil properties and Cd content, except for nitrogen, showed a gradient change with increasing biochar application rates. This was accompanied by an elevation in the Chao1 index for the bacterial community, although the fungal community remained unaffected in terms of diversity and structure. Null-model analyses indicated that fungal community assembly was mainly driven by ecological drift, explaining its unresponsiveness to biochar application. Applying 1% biochar enhanced microbial network stability while reducing bacterial network complexity. Conversely, 3% biochar application resulted in the lowest microbial network stability. Biochar application, except 3%, reduced the proportion of bacteria-fungi associations, suggesting increased independence between two microbial kingdoms. Random forest and piecewise structural equation models revealed that phytoremediation performance is influenced by microbial network stability, complexity, and bacteria-fungi associations. Fungal complexity and stability, along with bacterial stability, were identified as key predictors of phytoremediation performance. Our findings reveal potential mechanisms by which biochar influences phytoremediation through altering microbial interactions. For long-term microbial stability and cost-effectiveness, a 1% biochar application is recommended for phytoremediation. Non-native trees disrupt ecological processes vital to native plant communities. We studied how forests dominated by Acacia dealbata and Eucalyptus globulus affect the role of birds as dual pollinators and seed dispersers in a region heavily impacted by these two non-native species. We compared bird–plant interactions in the native and in the two non-native forest types. We constructed a multilayer regional network for each forest type and evaluated differences in network dissimilarity between networks. We also calculated the bird's importance in connecting processes and variables associated with module diversity. To determine how the networks react to changes in species richness, we did a simulation of species richness gradient and link percentage for each forest type. The number of birds acting both as pollinators and seed dispersers was higher in native than in non-native forests. However, birds in non-native forests still play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological services provided to native plant communities. However, the eucalyptus network exhibited a concerning simplification, forcing bird species to fully exploit the few remaining resources, leaving little room for structural adjustments and limiting the ecosystem's ability to withstand further species loss. Emotion-like states in animals are commonly assessed using judgment bias tests that measure judgements of ambiguous cues. Some studies have used these tests to argue for emotion-like states in insects. However, most of these results could have other explanations, including changes in motivation and attention. To control for these explanations, we developed a novel judgment bias test, requiring bumblebees to make an active choice indicating their interpretation of ambiguous stimuli. Bumblebees were trained to associate high or low rewards, in two different reward chambers, with distinct colours. We subsequently presented bees with ambiguous colours between the two learnt colours. In response, physically stressed bees were less likely than control bees to enter the reward chamber associated with high reward. Signal detection and drift diffusion models showed that stressed bees were more likely to choose low reward locations in response to ambiguous cues. The signal detection model further showed that the behaviour of stressed bees was explained by a reduction in the estimated probability of high rewards. We thus provide strong evidence for judgement biases in bees and suggest that their stress-induced behaviour is explained by reduced expectation of higher rewards, as expected for a pessimistic judgement bias. Background: The root-associated microbiomes are crucial in promoting plant growth and development through symbiotic interactions with their hosts. Plants may shape their microbiomes by secreting specific root exudates. However, the potential mechanisms how plant species determine root exudates and drive microbiome assembly have been little studied. In this study, three wild tobaccos and one cultivated tobacco were used to investigate the commonalities and differences of both root-associated microbiomes and root exudates. Results: Amplicon sequencing results suggested that tobacco species significantly affected microbial communities in both the rhizosphere and root endosphere, with the strongest impact on the fungal community in the root endosphere. The microbial networks of wild tobacco species were more stable than that of the cultivated tobacco, and fungal members played a more important role in the networks of wild tobacco species, while bacterial members did so in the cultivated tobacco. The rhizosphere bacteria of wild tobacco species showed a higher functional diversity than that of the cultivated tobacco, while the bacteria in the root endosphere presented a contrary pattern. Metabolomics analysis showed significant differences in the composition and abundance of root exudates among the four tobacco species, and the greatest difference was found between the three wild species and the cultivated one. Correlation analysis showed the strongest correlation between metabolites and rhizosphere bacteria, in which O-benzoic acid (2-methoxybenzoic acid) had the most positive correlations with rhizosphere bacteria, while β-ureidoisobutenoic acid had the most negative correlations with rhizosphere bacteria. The rhizosphere bacteria Streptomyces, Hydrophilus and Roseobacter had the strongest positive correlations with metabolites, and the rhizosphere bacterium Nitrobacter had the most negative correlations with metabolites. Background: Bacteria, Archaea, and Microeukaryotes comprise taxonomic domains that interact in mediating biogeochemical cycles in coastal waters. Many studies have revealed contrasting biogeographic patterns of community structure and assembly mechanisms in microbial communities from different domains in coastal ecosystems; however, knowledge of specific biogeographic patterns on microbial co-occurrence relationships across complex coastal environmental gradients remains limited. Using a dense sampling scheme at the regional scale, SSU rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and network analysis, we investigated intra- and inter-domain co-occurrence relationships and network topology-based biogeographic patterns from three microbial domains in coastal waters that show environmental gradients across the inshore-nearshore-offshore continuum in the East China Sea. Results: Overall, we found the highest complexity and connectivity in the bacterial network, the highest modularity in the archaeal network, and the lowest complexity, connectivity, and modularity in the microeukaryotic network. Although microbial co-occurrence networks from the three domains showed distinct topological features, they exhibited a consistent biogeographic pattern across the inshore-nearshore-offshore continuum. Specifically, the nearshore zones with intermediate levels of terrestrial impacts reflected by multiple environmental factors (including water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient-related parameters) had a higher intensity of microbial co-occurrence for all three domains. In contrast, the intensity of microbial co-occurrence was weaker in both the inshore and the offshore zones at the two ends of the environmental gradients. Archaea occupied a central position in the microbial inter-domain co-occurrence network. In particular, members of the Thaumarchaeota Marine Group I (MGI, now placed within the Family Nitrosopumilaceae of the Phylum Thermoproteota) appeared to be the hubs in the biogeographic shift between inter-domain network modules across environmental gradients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of light and glyphosate doses in the Euphorbia heterophylla control. The experiment was conducted in a factorial scheme. The first factor consisted of plants under full sunlight and two shadings of 40% and 65%, and the second factor represented by doses 0 (control), 370, 740, 1110, 1480 and 1850 g a.e. ha−1 of glyphosate. Shading increased E. heterophylla sensitivity to glyphosate compared to full sunlight. Under shading, the dose of 1110 g ha−1 of glyphosate was efficient in the management of this species, with control higher than 90%. However, under full sunlight, the highest doses achieved control levels around 75%, considered unsatisfactory. The variables fresh weight, quantum yield of photosystem II and electron transport rate of E. heterophylla showed a strong negative correlation with the species control by glyphosate. The glyphosate recommendations for controlling E. heterophylla needs to consider the light conditions in the plant growth environment, as an economically and sustainable practice in the integrated management of the specie. Adult parasitoids are well known to feed on sugar-rich resources such as floral nectar. Recently, an increasing body of evidence has shown that nectar is ubiquitously colonized by microorganisms and, as a consequence, microbial metabolic activity can affect several traits of floral nectar. Yet, how the fermentation of nectar by yeasts impacts the olfactory responses and performance of parasitoids is largely understudied, especially in the case of egg parasitoids. In this study, we investigated whether fermentation by the nectar yeasts Metschnikowia gruessii and M. reukaufii affects the olfactory responses of Trissolcus basalis and Ooencyrtus telenomicida, two egg parasitoid species associated with the southern green stink bug Nezara viridula. We also investigated how yeast fermentation affects the longevity and survival of the egg parasitoids. Results of static four-chamber olfactometer tests showed that nectar fermented by M. gruessii (but not by M. reukaufii) was attractive to both egg parasitoid species, whereas no significant yeast-mediated effects were found in terms of wasp longevity. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed a clear separation of the volatile profiles among M. gruessii, M. reukaufii and non-fermented control nectar supporting the results of the insect bioassays. The results of our study highlight the need to consider the role of microbes when studying interactions between flower nectar and egg parasitoids and could have implications from a conservation biological control perspective. Elevational gradients in alpine ecosystems are well suited to study how plant and pollinator communities respond to climate change. In the Austrian Alps, we tested how the taxonomic and functional diversity of plants and their pollinators change with increasing elevation and how this affects plant–pollinator network structure. We measured the phenotypes of flowering plants and their pollinators and observed their interactions in 24 communities along an elevational gradient. To assess variation in floral and pollinator traits, we then quantified trait spaces (n-dimensional hypervolumes) occupied by flowers and pollinators in each community. To assess plant–pollinator network structure, we quantified the levels of complementary specialization (H2'), modularity and nestedness (weighted NODF) for each community. As elevation increased, most measures of diversity and network specialization either declined linearly or in an oscillating manner. Communities that exhibited higher pollinator functional diversity exhibited larger degrees of complementary specialization and modularity; and communities with greater floral and pollinator functional diversity and higher phylogenetic diversity were less nested. Altogether, the degree to which elevation, species diversity, functional diversity and network structure changed in conjunction suggests environmental effects on the functional and phylogenetic diversity of plants and pollinators and consequently network structure. Our results suggest that the effects of climate change on plant and pollinator community composition will impact plant–pollinator network structure and potentially pollination services at the community scale. Understanding how climate conditions variation influences the pollination network structure is important for predicting the response of the plant and the pollinator communities, especially for alpine ecosystems, which are sensitive to climate change. Here, we investigated the pollination network of a sub-alpine meadow community by separating the pollinators into categories for ten years, from 2008 to 2010 and 2015 to 2021, and examined the relationships between precipitation or temperature and network metrics at the network, group and species-level. The results showed that the plant-pollinator networks were relatively stable across years, and the variation of network structure metrics were larger than that of growing-season and annual precipitation or temperature. The precipitation and temperature have different effects on the network metrics. Reduced precipitations increase competition among pollinator categories, leading to higher niche overlap of pollinator categories. While increased temperatures resulted in less pollinator sharing, leading to a more specialized network with decreased nestedness. This study contributes to the understanding of how interannual climate change affect plant-pollinator network, and emphasizes the importance of predicting the impact of climate change on ecosystem services. Co-flowering congeneric plant species may either experience competition for the services of shared pollinators or facilitation when together, they attract a higher number and diversity of pollinators. In this study, we evaluate whether temporal segregation in flowering time and temporal partition of shared pollinators operate among sympatric Anthurium species as mechanisms to reduce competition to attract potential pollinators. We investigated flowering phenology, the intra-e interspecific synchrony, and the composition of the flower visitor community of seven coexisting Anthurium species biweekly for a whole year in Native and Pine forests. We also analyzed the structure of Anthurium -flower visitor networks and the functional role of species. Flowering was continuous thorough the year for most Anthurium species, but their flowering peaks were segregated significantly in time. Although the flowering periods of these species overlapped, flower visitor communities were very dissimilar among Anthurium species, sharing only a tiny fraction of insects that function as connectors among species in the network. The partition of potential pollinators in a fine temporal scale occurred through the rewiring of shared flower visitors to the most abundant flowering Anthurium species. On the other hand, a high number of inflorescences attracted larger abundance and richness of insect visitors. Facilitation occurred almost throughout the year, while competition occurred during the flowering peak, where a particular species was the best competitor increasing the constancy of pollinators. This study highlights the role of facilitation and competition as mechanisms that together shape the use of potential pollinator resources between sympatric congeneric plant species. A pollination network may be either 2-mode, describing trophic and reproductive interactions between communities of flowering plants and pollinator species within a well-defined habitat, or 1-mode, describing interactions between either plants or pollinators. In a 1-mode pollinator network, two pollinator species are linked to each other if they both visit the same plant species, and vice versa for plants. Properties of 2-mode networks and their derived 1-mode networks are highly correlated and so are properties of 1-mode pollinator and 1-mode plant networks. Most network properties are scale-dependent, i.e. they are dependent upon network size. Pollination networks have the strongest small-world properties of any networks yet studied, i.e. all species are close to each other (short average path length) and species are highly clustered. Species in pollination networks are much more densely linked than species in traditional food webs, i.e. they have a higher density of links, a shorter distance between species, and species are more clustered.

The potential promise of the microbiome to ameliorate a wide range of societal and ecological challenges, from disease prevention and treatment to the restoration of entire ecosystems, hinges not only on microbiome engineering but also on the stability of beneficial microbiomes. Yet the properties of microbiome stability remain elusive and challenging to discern due to the complexity of interactions and often intractable diversity within these communities of bacteria, archaea, fungi, and other microeukaryotes. Networks are powerful tools for the study of complex microbiomes, with the potential to elucidate structural patterns of stable communities and generate testable hypotheses for experimental validation. However, the implementation of these analyses introduces a cascade of dichotomies and decision trees due to the lack of consensus on best practices. Here, we provide a road map for network-based microbiome studies with an emphasis on discerning properties of stability. We identify important considerations for data preparation, network construction, and interpretation of network properties. We also highlight remaining limitations and outstanding needs for this field. This review also serves to clarify the varying schools of thought on the application of network theory for microbiome studies and to identify practices that enhance the reproducibility and validity of future work. Planting floral resources is a common strategy for increasing the abundance and diversity of beneficial flower-visiting insects in human-modified systems. However, the context of the local area and surrounding landscape may affect the attractiveness of these floral resource provisioning plots. We compared the relative effects of local floral resources and surrounding urban land-use on the abundance of bees on flowering plants in common gardens in eastern Tennessee, USA. We planted four types of common garden plots at each of five different landscapes representing a variety of surrounding land use: 1) Urban Garden, 2) Forage Grassland, 3) Mixed Agriculture, 4) Forest, and 5) Organic Farm. Each common garden plot type had a fixed plant community representing one of three plant families (Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae) or a mix of all three, and all four common gardens were replicated at all the sites. We concurrently sampled bees in the garden plots and in a 50 m radius (local area) around the garden plots. We found that the size of the floral display (i.e. the visual display size of flowers) and diversity of flowers in the local area did not affect bee abundance or species richness in the garden plots. Although there was a significant positive association between developed land use in a 2 km radius and bee abundance in the gardens, the effect was small, and there was no relationship between land use and bee abundance or species richness in the local area. There were significant differences in the composition of the bee community between the local area and garden plots, but the largest determinants of bee community composition and species richness in the gardens were floral display size and variation in the garden plant species in bloom. Understanding the alterations in soil microbial communities in response to climate warming and their controls over soil carbon (C) processes is crucial for projecting permafrost C-climate feedback. However, previous studies have mainly focused on microorganism-mediated soil C release, and little is known about whether and how climate warming affects microbial anabolism and the subsequent C input in permafrost regions. Here, based on a more than half-decade of in situ warming experiment, we show that compared with ambient control, warming significantly reduces microbial C use efficiency and enhances microbial network complexity, which promotes soil heterotrophic respiration. Meanwhile, microbial necromass markedly accumulates under warming likely due to preferential microbial decomposition of plant-derived C, further leading to the increase in mineral-associated organic C. Altogether, these results demonstrate dual roles of microbes in affecting soil C release and stabilization, implying that permafrost C-climate feedback would weaken over time with dampened response of microbial respiration and increased proportion of stable C pool. Knowledge regarding the influence of individual traits on interaction patterns in nature can help understand the topological role of individuals within a network of intrapopulation interactions. We tested hypotheses on the relationships between individuals' positions within networks (specialization and centrality) of 4 populations of the mouse opossum Gracilinanus agilis and their traits (i.e. body length, body condition, tail length relative to body length, sex, reproductive condition, and botfly parasitism) and also seasonal effects in the Brazilian savanna. Individuals with lower body length, better body condition, and relatively shorter tail were more specialized (i.e. less connected within the network). Individuals were also more specialized and less connected during the warm-wet season. The relationship between individuals' position in the network and body traits, however, was independent of season. We propose that specialization may arise not only as a result of preferred feeding strategies by more capable individuals (i.e. those with better body condition and potentially prone to defend and access high-quality food resources) but also because of morphological constraints. Smaller/younger individuals (consequently with less experience in foraging) and short-tailed individuals (less skilled to explore the vertical strata of the vegetation) would feed only on a subset of the available food resources and consequently become more specialized. Moreover, individuals are more specialized during the warm-wet season because of high competition (population-dense period) and higher ecological opportunities (resource-rich period). However, Myxococcota are rarely pure cultured due to the challenging and stringent culturing conditions. Their natural distribution, niche differentiation, and predator–prey relationships in a specific habitat are poorly understood. Results: In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence data from public databases and our collection. We compared the abundance, diversity, and distribution patterns of Myxococcota in various habitats, with a specific focus on mangroves. We found that Myxococcota accounted for 1.45% of the total prokaryotes in global sediments based on the abundance of 16S rRNA genes. Myxococcota are abundant and diverse in mangrove sediments. They tend to be more generalistic in mangroves than in other habitats due to their wide niche breadth. Besides, the deterministic processes (variable selection) influenced the assembly of mangrove Myxococcota communities significantly more than stochastic processes. Further, we determined that environmental factors explained a greater amount of total community variation in mangrove Myxococcota than geographical variables (latitude and sediment depth). In the end, through the analysis of microbial co-occurrence networks, Myxococcota emerges as a key component and functions as a connector in the mangrove microbial community. Conclusions: Our study enhances comprehension of mangrove Myxococcota's biogeography, assembly patterns, driving factors, and co-occurrence relationships, as well as highlights their unique niche and ecological importance in mangrove sediments. The physical filtering of pollinators is an important factor influencing pollination effectiveness. This study explored the potential functions of dense hairs that completely obstruct the entrance of floral tube in Marsdenia tinctoria by characterizing the flowers of this species, as well as its pollinators and their behavior. The corolla was white upon blooming in the morning, then turned yellow at night, and the flower finally dropped by the third morning. The hairs tended to be disheveled in yellow-petaled flowers. Pollination success increased with floral age. Direct observations of flowers in natural M. tinctoria populations over a period of 32 h recorded 126 visitors, of which 70% were wasps. We observed pollinia attached to the mouthparts of wasps, carpenter bees, and honeybees, but not to those of butterflies, moths, flies, or ants. Detailed examination of insect mouthparts and floral morphology indicated that insect visitors that acted as pollinators had mouthparts longer than the floral tubes, equipped with hairs to which pollinia could attach. The mouthparts of potter wasps were often covered with pollinaria, carrying on average 30-75 pollinia. The dense floral hairs were penetrated by large-bodied visitors, and blocked smaller visitors. Disturbance of these floral hairs allowed smaller insects to access nectar, suggesting that the hairs function in preventing nectar theft by smaller insects. Pollinators help maintain functional landscapes and are sensitive to floral nutritional quality. Both proteins and lipids influence pollinator foraging, but the role of individual biochemical components in pollen remains unclear. We conducted an experiment comprising common garden plots of six plant species (Asteraceae, Rosaceae, Onagraceae, Boraginaceae, and Plantaginaceae). These plots were treated with low concentrations of agrochemicals, including fertilizer, herbicide, and a combination of both to induce intra-specific variation in floral chemistry. We recorded insect visitation to inflorescences over two years and eight sites in Dublin, Ireland. We analyzed the pollen amino acid and fatty acid content, quantifying the concentrations of 51 fatty acids and 17 amino acids of the six focal plant species across the four agrochemical treatments. We tested relationships between the pollen composition and the insect visitation matrix as well as an insect trait matrix including sociality, body size, nesting behavior, and whether the insect was a bee or hoverfly. We found: (i) the agrochemical treatments did not affect the biochemical composition of the pollen; (ii) there were many strong associations between fatty acids, amino acids, insect traits, and visitation; and (iii) specific compounds with strong associations (montanic acid, cysteine, and proline) explained more of the variance in insect abundance (honeybees, bumble bees, and hoverflies) than the total amino acid or fatty acid concentrations in the pollen. Global pollinator decline urgently requires effective methods to assess their trends, distribution and behaviour. Passive acoustics is a non-invasive and cost-efficient monitoring tool increasingly employed for monitoring animal communities. However, insect sounds remain highly unexplored, hindering the application of this technique for pollinators. To overcome this shortfall and support future developments, we recorded and characterized wingbeat sounds of a variety of Iberian domestic and wild bees and tested their relationship with taxonomic, morphological, behavioural and environmental traits at inter- and intra-specific levels. Using directional microphones and machine learning, we shed light on the acoustic signature of bee wingbeat sounds and their potential to be used for species identification and monitoring. Our results revealed that frequency of wingbeat sounds is negatively related with body size and environmental temperature (between-species analysis), while it is positively related with experimentally induced stress conditions (within-individual analysis). We also found a characteristic acoustic signature in the European honeybee that supported automated classification of this bee from a pool of wild bees, paving the way for passive acoustic monitoring of pollinators. Overall, these findings confirm that insect sounds during flight activity can provide insights on individual and species traits, and hence suggest novel and promising applications for this endangered animal group. Automated sensors have potential to standardize and expand the monitoring of insects across the globe. As one of the most scalable and fastest developing sensor technologies, we describe a framework for automated, image-based monitoring of nocturnal insects—from sensor development and field deployment to workflows for data processing and publishing. Sensors comprise a light to attract insects, a camera for collecting images and a computer for scheduling, data storage and processing. Metadata is important to describe sampling schedules that balance the capture of relevant ecological information against power and data storage limitations. Large data volumes of images from automated systems necessitate scalable and effective data processing. We describe computer vision approaches for the detection, tracking and classification of insects, including models built from existing aggregations of labelled insect images. Data from automated camera systems necessitate approaches that account for inherent biases. We advocate models that explicitly correct for bias in species occurrence or abundance estimates resulting from the imperfect detection of species or individuals present during sampling occasions. We propose ten priorities towards a step-change in automated monitoring of nocturnal insects, a vital task in the face of rapid biodiversity loss from global threats. Land use change alters floral resource availability, thereby contributing to declines in important pollinators. However, the severity of land use impact varies by species, influenced by factors such as dispersal ability and resource specialization, both of which can correlate with body size. Here. we test whether floral resource availability in the surrounding landscape (the 'matrix') influences bee species' abundance in isolated remnant woodlands, and whether this effect varies with body size. We sampled quantitative flower-visitation networks within woodland remnants and quantified floral energy resources (nectar and pollen calories) available to each bee species both within the woodland and the matrix. Bee abundance in woodland increased with floral energy resources in the surrounding matrix, with strongest effects on larger-bodied species. Our findings suggest important but size-dependent effects of declining matrix floral resources on the persistence of bees in remnant woodlands, highlighting the need to incorporate landscape-level floral resources in conservation planning for pollinators in threatened natural habitats. Background: Anthropogenic activities significantly impact natural ecosystems, leading to alterations in plant and pollinator diversity and abundance. These changes often result in shifts within interacting communities, potentially reshaping the structure of plant-pollinator interaction networks. Given the escalating human footprint on habitats, evaluating the response of these networks to anthropization is critical for devising effective conservation and management strategies. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive review of the plant-pollinator network literature to assess the impact of anthropization on network structure. We assessed network metrics such as nestedness measure based on overlap and decreasing fills (NODF), network specialization (H2'), connectance (C), and modularity (Q) to understand structural changes. Employing a meta-analytical approach, we examined how anthropization activities, such as deforestation, urbanization, habitat fragmentation, agriculture, intentional fires and livestock farming, affect both plant and pollinator richness. Results: We generated a dataset for various metrics of network structure and 36 effect sizes for the meta-analysis, from 38 articles published between 2010 and 2023. Studies assessing the impact of agriculture and fragmentation were well-represented, comprising 68.4% of all studies, with networks involving interacting insects being the most studied taxa. Agriculture and fragmentation reduce nestedness and increase specialization in plant-pollinator networks, while modularity and connectance are mostly not affected. Although our meta-analysis suggests that anthropization decreases richness for both plants and pollinators, there was substantial heterogeneity in this regard among the evaluated studies. The meta-regression analyses helped us determine that the habitat fragment size where the studies were conducted was the primary variable contributing to such heterogeneity. Conclusions: The analysis of human impacts on plant-pollinator networks showed varied effects worldwide. Responses differed among network metrics, signaling nuanced impacts on structure. Activities like agriculture and fragmentation significantly changed ecosystems, reducing species richness in both pollinators and plants, highlighting network vulnerability.
