The current research aims to investigate whether perspective taking influences social tuning, or the alignment of one's self-views, explicit attitudes, and/or implicit attitudes with those of an interaction partner. In six different experiments, participants believed they would interact with a partner to complete a task. Prior to this ostensible interaction, participants were given a perspective taking mindset prime, or not, and information about their ostensible interaction partners views. Participants then completed attitude measures related to the partner's perceived views. Experiments 1a, 1b, and 2 examined whether perspective taking with an ostensible interaction partner who endorses gender traditional (or non-traditional) views align their self-views with this partner, including implicit self-views (Experiment 2). Experiments 3-5 investigated whether perspective taking leads to social tuning for egalitarian racial attitudes, including when the partner's expectations of how others will be and when the participant learns their ostensible IAT score at the beginning of the session. We predicted perspective takers would be more likely to social tune their explicit and implicit attitudes to the attitudes of their interaction partner than non-perspective takers. Across all experiments, perspective takers were more likely to social tune their self-views and explicit attitudes than non-perspective takers. However, social tuning never occurred for implicit attitudes. Purpose: This study aim was to detect the impact of lateral ankle ligaments injury on syndesmotic laxity when evaluated arthroscopically in a cadaveric model. The null hypothesis was that lateral ankle ligament injury does not affect the stability of syndesmosis., Methods: Sixteen fresh-frozen above-knee amputated cadaveric specimens were divided into two groups of eight specimens that underwent arthroscopic evaluation of the distal tibiofibular joint. In both the groups, the assessment was first done with all syndesmotic and ankle ligaments intact. Thereafter, Group 1 underwent sequential transection of the three lateral ankle ligaments first to identify the effects of lateral ligament injury: (1) anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), (2) calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), (3) posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL), then followed by the syndesmotic ligaments, (4) AITFL, (5) Interosseous ligament (IOL), and (6) PITFL. Group 2 underwent sequential transection of the (1) AITFL, (2) ATFL, (3) CFL, (4) IOL, (5) PTFL, and (6) PITFL, which represent the most commonly injured pattern in ankle sprain. In all scenarios, four loading conditions were considered under 100 N of direct force: (1) unstressed, (2) a lateral fibular hook test, (3) anterior to posterior (AP) fibular translation test, and (4) posterior to anterior (PA) fibular translation test. Distal tibiofibular coronal plane diastasis at the anterior and posterior third of syndesmosis, as well as AP and PA sagittal plane translation, were arthroscopically measured., Results: The distal tibiofibular joint remained stable after transection of all lateral ankle ligaments (ATFL, CFL, and PTFL) as well as the AITFL. However, after additional transection of the IOL, the syndesmosis became unstable in both the coronal and sagittal plane. Syndesmosis laxity in the coronal plane was also observed after transection of the ATFL, CFL, AITFL, and IOL. Subsequent transection of the PITFL precipitated syndesmosis laxity in the sagittal plane, as well., Conclusions: The findings from the present study suggest that lateral ankle ligament injuries itself do not directly affect the stability of syndesmosis. However, if it combines with IOL injuries, even partial injuries cause syndesmotic laxity. As a clinical relevance, accurate diagnosis is the key for surgeons to determine syndesmosis fixation whether there is only AITFL injury or combined IOL injury in concomitant acute syndesmotic and lateral ligament injury., (© 2022. Portable ultrasonography is increasingly used to evaluate ankle stability at the point of care. This study aims to determine the correlation of portable-ultrasonographic and fluoroscopic measurements of ankle laxity in a cadaveric ligament transection model of ankle ligament injury. We hypothesize that there is an association between portable-ultrasonographic and fluoroscopic measurements when performing stress evaluation of lateral ankle instability. Eight fresh-frozen below-knee amputated cadaveric specimens with intact proximal fibula underwent ultrasound and fluoroscopic evaluation of the ankle during anterior drawer and talar tilt testing. The assessment was first performed with all lateral ankle ligaments intact and thereafter with sequential transection of the anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, and posterior talofibular ligament. The anterior drawer test was performed with both 50N and 80N of force, and talar tilt test was performed with 1.7 Nm of torque. Correlations between (1) portable-ultrasonographic and fluoroscopic measurements and (2) sequential transection of lateral ankle ligaments were evaluated using Spearman's rank correlations. The same statistical test was used to investigate the correlation between the ultrasonographic and the fluoroscopic measurements. The inter- and intra-observer agreement was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient through a two-way mixed-effects model with absolute agreement. Portable-ultrasonographic and fluoroscopic measurements increased as additional ligaments of the lateral ankle were transected (Spearman's rank correlation ranged from 0.74 to 0.81, 0.74 to 0.81, p-values < 0.001). Strong positive correlations between ultrasonographic and fluoroscopic measurements were found during the lateral ankle stability evaluation using anterior drawer and talar tilt testing (Spearman's rank correlation ranged from 0.81 to 0.85, 0.81 to 0.85, p-values < 0.001). Inter-rater (0.99, 95% CI: 0.98-0.99) and intra-rater reliability (0.97, 95% CI: 0.95-0.99) for the ultrasonographic measurements were substantial. In conclusion, there was a strong correlation found between ultrasonographic and fluoroscopic values measured during simulated anterior drawer and talar tilt test in a cadaveric ligament transection model. In this model, the portable-ultrasonographic measurement was found to be reliable for repeated measurements of the talar translation and the lateral clear space distance. Based on these data, ultrasonography is likely to become a valuable point of care diagnostic tool due to its ability to readily and dynamically evaluate suspected lateral ankle instability. Clinical Significance: The use of dynamic stress ultrasound to assess the anterior translation of the talus and the lateral clear space distance appears to be a reliable and repeatable technique to evaluate lateral ankle stability with a radiation-free, noninvasive, and low-cost manner., (© 2022 Orthopaedic Research Society. The aim of this study was to characterize ankle stability of total talar prosthesis (TTP) and to determine the effect of implant sizes on stability as well as the resistance to TTP dislocation. Twelve below-knee cadaveric specimens were divided into two groups. Group 1 received a size matched implant and Group 2 received downsized implant by 5%. The stability assessment under fluoroscopy was performed for each cadaver in its native state. Following TTP insertion process, each then underwent evaluation of the TTP ankle stability. The stability of pre- and post-TTP was compared. (1) Anterior drawer distance. (2) Talar tilt angle under varus and valgus stress. (3) Subtalar tilt angle under varus stress was measured. Finally, the dislocation test was performed using the aforementioned testing conditions, then the stress force was slowly increased from 0 to 350 N, during which time it was observed on fluoroscopy all the time. Compared to pre TTP ankles, varus and anterior drawer stress showed significant instability (p < 0.001-0.031). Only anterior drawer stress in smaller sized implants showed significant instability when compared to identical sized implants (p = 0.008). No dislocation was seen under varus, valgus, and subtalar stress. However, anterior dislocation was observed in all cases of smaller size implant group (p = 0.045). TTP implant was stable under valgus and subtalar stress. However, clinicians should pay attention to anterior instability. Sleep problems are common in autism and ADHD. No study has compared sleep problems by age in 2 to 17 year olds with autism versus ADHD-Combined versus ADHD-Inattentive type. Mothers rated 1415 youth with autism and 1041 with ADHD on 10 Pediatric Behavior Scale sleep items. Nighttime sleep problems were most severe in autism, followed by ADHD-Combined, and then ADHD-Inattentive. Difficulty falling asleep, restless during sleep, and waking during the night were the most common problems. Adolescents slept more at night than other age groups, and youth who slept more at night were sleepier during the day. Sleep problems declined with age, but correlations were small. In adolescence, 63% with autism, 53% with ADHD-Combined, and 57% with ADHD-Inattentive had difficulty falling asleep. Given that the majority of children in all age groups had one or more sleep problem, developmentally appropriate interventions are needed to address sleep difficulties and limit their adverse effects., (© 2021. Background: Management of proximal 5th metatarsal fractures remains a controversial topic in orthopaedic surgery. Both operative and non-operative approaches have been described in the clinical setting. This confusion has led to non-standardized treatment recommendations for proximal 5th metatarsal fractures. This study was designed to analyze concordance rate of treatment recommendations between orthopaedic trainees and orthopaedic foot and ankle experts., Methods: An online survey containing 14 cases of proximal 5th metatarsal fractures were distributed to 92 orthopaedic residents in two ACGME-accredited programs. Relevant weight-bearing radiographs, patient's age and gender were provided, and two questions regarding treatment recommendations were surveyed. Resident's recommended treatment was then matched against ultimate treatment by orthopaedic foot and ankle experts. ANOVA and T-test are used for associations between the rate of concordant treatment with PGY and trainee foot and ankle experience. Fleiss' kappa was used to assess the inter-observer agreement., Results: Seventy-two residents returned the survey. The overall concordance rate was 43.98% with no correlation between agreement rate and PGY-years. No difference in agreement rate was observed between residents who had completed their foot and ankle rotation versus those who had not. There was a slight inter-observer agreement in recommending treatment among all residents (κ=0.117, 95% CI: 0.071-0.184)., Conclusions: Our data demonstrated no significant concordance between resident level in training regarding proximal 5th metatarsal fracture treatment decisions, nor between residents and subspecialty-trained foot and ankle surgeons. Background: The impact of patient sex on the prevalence of foot and ankle injuries has been established. Reporting of differences on treatment outcomes is lacking. The purpose of this study was to identify trends in sex-specific outcomes across high-impact journals over a 5-year time period., Methods: Two independent investigators reviewed journal issues published during 2 calendar years (2011 and 2016) in the 5 highest-impact orthopedic foot and ankle/sports subspecialty journals ( Foot & Ankle International [ FAI ], Foot and Ankle Surgery [ FAS ], American Journal of Sports Medicine [ AJSM ], Arthroscopy , and Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy [ KSSTA ]). Studies were stratified into those that involved sex-specific analysis (SSA), where sex was a variable in a multifactorial statistical model, and those that only reported sex as a demographic characteristic or utilized sex-matched cohorts., Results: A total of 473 studies evaluating a total of 273 128 patients met criteria. An average of 43.9% (119 967 patients) of the population were female. Only 16.7% (79/473) of studies included sex as variable in a statistical model. Thirteen percent (25/193) and 19.3% (54/280) of studies reported SSA in 2011 and 2016, respectively. FAI was the only journal demonstrating a significant improvement of reporting SSA from 2011 to 2016 ( P < .002). Thirty percent (24/79) of studies that performed SSA demonstrated significant differences between male and female outcomes., Conclusion: Reporting of SSA in the orthopedic literature continued to be lacking. Only 16.7% of all articles evaluated in 2011 and 2016 performed SSA, with 30% of this subset reporting a statistically significant difference in outcomes., Level of Evidence: Level III, comparative study.

Co-management is widely seen as a way of improving environmental governance and empowering communities. When successful, co-management enhances the validity and legitimacy of decision-making, while providing stakeholders with influence over processes and outcomes that directly impact them. However, our research with participants in co-management across several cases leads us to argue that many of the individuals who contribute to co-management are subject to significant personal stress arising from both the logistical and social/emotional demands of participation in these processes. We argue that the literature on co-management has touched on this only indirectly, and that personal stress is a major challenge for participants that ought to be integrated into research agendas and addressed by policy-makers. In this article, we review the contours of the personal stress issue as it has appeared in our observations of co-management events and interviews with participants. While these findings are partial and preliminary, we argue that personal stress has theoretical and practical significance to the broader literature and process design. We conclude the article with recommendations for participants, researchers and policy-makers about how to consider and respond to problems of personal stress., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: Managing the distal tibiofibular (DTF) joint remains a challenge despite recent developments. Ankle arthroscopy is emerging as a diagnostic and therapeutic means. Our study aimed to compare preoperative imaging data and arthroscopic data, with the hypothesis that imaging alone is insufficient to evaluate acute laxity, and with arthroscopy as the reference examination., Methods: All patients treated in 2023 in our department for an acute isolated DTF lesion were included prospectively. Preoperative radiographic and MRI imaging were compared with arthroscopic data., Results: Ten patients were treated. For five patients, the instability was doubtful after carrying out an appropriate imaging assessment (X-rays of both ankles, MRI). For four of these five patients, instability was confirmed by arthroscopy. Arthroscopy was useful for suturing the anterior bundle of the DTF joint for two patients and allowed for verifying the reduction in the sagittal and coronal planes for two patients. No complications were detected., Conclusions: Arthroscopy in isolated acute DTF lesions seems to provide a diagnostic and therapeutic advantage. Its use may allow for exhaustive assessment and complete repair of lesions. It must be offered as soon as possible; a delay in specialized imaging may delay therapeutic care., (© 2024. There are limited data to guide the use of venous thromboembolism disease (VTED) prophylaxis after foot and ankle surgery. Although there is general consensus that the overall risk is lower than after hip or knee replacement, subpopulations of patients may be at relatively heightened risk. Furthermore, existing data are often conflicting regarding the efficacy of prophylaxis, with little acknowledgment of the tradeoffs between VTED prophylaxis and potential complications associated with the use of such medications. This article provides an overview of currently available evidence to guide decision making regarding VTED prophylaxis in patients who undergo foot and ankle surgery., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)
