Neutron diffraction measurements are presented measuring the responses of both magnetic and structural order parameters of parent and lightly Co-doped Ba(Fe1 xCox)2As2 under the application of uniaxial pressure. We find that the uniaxial pressure induces a thermal shift in the onset of antiferromagnetic order that grows as a percentage of TN as Co doping is increased and the superconducting phase is approached. Additionally, as uniaxial pressure is increased within parent and lightly doped Ba(Fe1 xCox)2As2 on the first-order side of the tricritical point, we observe a decoupling between the onsets of the orthorhombic structural distortion and antiferromagnetism. Our findings place needed constraints on models exploring the nematic susceptibility of the bilayer pnictides in the tetragonal, paramagnetic regime. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Negative compressibility is a sign of thermodynamic instability of open or non-equilibrium systems. In quantum materials consisting of multiple mutually coupled subsystems, the compressibility of one subsystem can be negative if it is countered by positive compressibility of the others. Manifestations of this effect have so far been limited to low-dimensional dilute electron systems. Here, we present evidence from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for negative electronic compressibility (NEC) in the quasi-three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit correlated metal (Sr1−xLax)3Ir2O7. Increased electron filling accompanies an anomalous decrease of the chemical potential, as indicated by the overall movement of the deep valence bands. Such anomaly, suggestive of NEC, is shown to be primarily driven by the lowering in energy of the conduction band as the correlated bandgap reduces. Our finding points to a distinct pathway towards an uncharted territory of NEC featuring bulk correlated metals with unique potential for applications in low-power nanoelectronics and novel metamaterials. A correlated material in the vicinity of an insulator-metal transition (IMT) exhibits rich phenomenology and a variety of interesting phases. A common avenue to induce IMTs in Mott insulators is doping, which inevitably leads to disorder. While disorder is well known to create electronic inhomogeneity, recent theoretical studies have indicated that it may play an unexpected and much more profound role in controlling the properties of Mott systems. Theory predicts that disorder might play a role in driving a Mott insulator across an IMT, with the emergent metallic state hosting a power-law suppression of the density of states (with exponent close to 1; V-shaped gap) centered at the Fermi energy. Such V-shaped gaps have been observed in Mott systems, but their origins are as-yet unknown. To investigate this, we use scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study isovalent Ru substitutions in Sr 3 (Ir 1-x Ru x ) 2 O 7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) which drive the system into an antiferromagnetic, metallic state. Our experiments reveal that many core features of the IMT, such as power-law density of states, pinning of the Fermi energy with increasing disorder, and persistence of antiferromagnetism, can be understood as universal features of a disordered Mott system near an IMT and suggest that V-shaped gaps may be an inevitable consequence of disorder in doped Mott insulators., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

We investigated pressure-induced changes in pyrochlore iridates ( A 2 Ir 2 O 7 , A = Pr, Gd, Dy and Er) using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. All four compounds exhibited a pressure-driven isostructural transition associated with the rearrangement of IrO 6 octahedra in the pyrochlore lattice. Interestingly, the critical pressure ( P c ) for this transition correlates inversely with the A-site cation radius, P c decreased from ∼ 10.8 GPa (Er, smallest cation) to ∼ 7.5 GPa (Pr, largest cation). Additionally, the bulk modulus systematically decreases with increasing ionic radius of A-site across the A 2 Ir 2 O 7 series. High-pressure Raman spectroscopy revealed anomalous decrease of the linewidth with increasing pressure for Ir–O ( T 2 g 4 ) and Ir–O–Ir ( A 1 g and E g ) vibrational modes, suggesting a suppression of electron–phonon coupling due to enhanced electronic bandwidth under pressure. Interest in many strongly spin-orbit-coupled 5d-transition metal oxide insulators stems from mapping their electronic structures to a J(eff)=1/2 Mott phase. One of the hopes is to establish their Mott parent states and explore these systems' potential of realizing novel electronic states upon carrier doping. However, once doped, little is understood regarding the role of their reduced Coulomb interaction U relative to their strongly correlated 3d-electron cousins. Here we show that, upon hole-doping a candidate J(eff)=1/2 Mott insulator, carriers remain localized within a nanoscale phase-separated ground state. A percolative metal-insulator transition occurs with interplay between localized and itinerant regions, stabilizing an antiferromagnetic metallic phase beyond the critical region. Our results demonstrate a surprising parallel between doped 5d- and 3d-electron Mott systems and suggest either through the near-degeneracy of nearby electronic phases or direct carrier localization that U is essential to the carrier response of this doped spin-orbit Mott insulator.

In topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), topology and crystal symmetry intertwine to create surface states with distinct characteristics. The breaking of crystal symmetry in TCIs is predicted to impart mass to the massless Dirac fermions. Here, we report high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy studies of a TCI, Pb(1-x)Sn(x)Se that reveal the coexistence of zero-mass Dirac fermions protected by crystal symmetry with massive Dirac fermions consistent with crystal symmetry breaking. In addition, we show two distinct regimes of the Fermi surface topology separated by a Van-Hove singularity at the Lifshitz transition point. Our work paves the way for engineering the Dirac band gap and realizing interaction-driven topological quantum phenomena in TCIs.

The Ruddlesden-Popper series of iridates (Srn+1IrnO3n+1) have been the subject of much recent attention due to the anticipation of emergent phenomena arising from the cooperative action of spin-orbit-driven band splitting and Coulomb interactions. However, an ongoing debate over the role of correlations in the formation of the charge gap and a lack of understanding of the effects of doping on the low-energy electronic structure have hindered experimental progress in realizing many of the predicted states. Using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy we map out the spatially resolved density of states in Sr3Ir2O7 (Ir327). We show that its parent compound, argued to exist only as a weakly correlated band insulator, in fact possesses a substantial ~ 130 meV charge excitation gap driven by an interplay between structure, spin-orbit coupling and correlations. We find that single-atom defects are associated with a strong electronic inhomogeneity, creating an important distinction between the intrinsic and spatially averaged electronic structure. Combined with first-principles calculations, our measurements reveal how defects at specific atomic sites transfer spectral weight from higher energies to the gap energies, providing a possible route to obtaining metallic electronic states from the parent insulating states in the iridates.

Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we study a 3D topological insulator Bi(2)Te(3) with a periodic structural deformation (buckling). The buckled surface allows us to measure the response of Dirac electrons in a magnetic field to the presence of a well-defined potential variation. We find that while the n=0 Landau level exhibits a 12 meV energy shift across the buckled structure at 7 T, the amplitude of this shift changes with the Landau level index. Modeling these effects reveals that the Landau level behavior encodes information on the spatial extent of their wave functions. Our findings have important implications for transport and magnetoresistance measurements in Dirac materials with engineered potential landscapes.

We report neutron scattering experiments probing the influence of uniaxial strain on both the magnetic and structural order parameters in the parent iron pnictide compound, BaFe2As2. Our data show that modest strain fields along the in-plane orthorhombic b axis can affect significant changes in phase behavior simultaneous to the removal of structural twinning effects. As a result, we demonstrate in BaFe2As2 samples detwinned via uniaxial strain that the in-plane C4 symmetry is broken by both the structural lattice distortion and long-range spin ordering at temperatures far above the nominal (strain-free) phase transition temperatures. Surprising changes in the magnetic order parameter of this system under relatively small strain fields also suggest the inherent presence of magnetic domains fluctuating above the strain-free ordering temperature in this material.

Three-dimensional topological insulators host linearly dispersing states with unique properties and a strong potential for applications. An important ingredient in realizing some of the more exotic states in topological insulators is the ability to manipulate local electronic properties. Direct analogy to the Dirac material graphene suggests that a possible avenue for controlling local properties is via a controlled structural deformation such as the formation of ripples. However, the influence of such ripples on topological insulators is yet to be explored. Here we use scanning tunnelling microscopy to determine the effects of one-dimensional buckling on the electronic properties of Bi(2)Te(3.) By tracking spatial variations of the interference patterns generated by the Dirac electrons we show that buckling imposes a periodic potential, which locally modulates the surface-state dispersion. This suggests that forming one- and two-dimensional ripples is a viable method for creating nanoscale potential landscapes that can be used to control the properties of Dirac electrons in topological insulators.

We study interference patterns of a magnetically doped topological insulator Bi(2-x)Fe(x)Te(3+d) by using Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy and observe several new scattering channels. A comparison with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy allows us to unambiguously ascertain the momentum-space origin of distinct dispersing channels along high-symmetry directions and identify those originating from time-reversal symmetry breaking. Our analysis also reveals that the surface state survives far above the energy where angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy finds the onset of continuum bulk bands.

We report our numerical results on the stability of the skyrmion crystal phase in an external magnetic field for both in-plane and out-of-plane directions in a centrosymmetric host. We analyze a spin model with the two-spin symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction that arises from relativistic spin–orbit coupling on a triangular lattice. By performing simulated annealing, we construct magnetic phase diagrams when the magnetic field is tilted from the out-of-plane field direction to the in-plane field direction. We find a different stability tendency of the skyrmion crystal phase according to the directions of the in-plane field, which provides a signal of the two-spin symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction for stabilizing the skyrmion crystal phase. Our results indicate that the mechanism of the skyrmion crystal phase triggered by the two-spin symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction can be experimentally tested by applying the in-plane magnetic field. Incorporation of other transition metals in Au nanoclusters has been thriving recently due to its effect on their electronic and photophysical properties. Here, the ultrasmall phosphine-stabilized Rh-doped gold clusters AunRh (n = 5, 6, 7, 8), with metal core structures represented as fragments of a rhodium-centered icosahedron, are considered. The geometric and electronic properties of these nanoclusters are revisited and analyzed using density functional theory (DFT). Moreover, infrared spectra are simulated to identify the effects of Rh doping on the clusters through vibrational properties. Peaks are assigned to breathing-like normal modes for all AuRh clusters except for Au8Rh, likely due to the presence of bound Cl ligands. Unlike their pure gold core counterparts, the % motions of both Au and Rh atoms are lower in the mixed metal clusters, suggesting more restrained metal cores by rhodium, which could result in other novel physical and chemical properties not hitherto discovered. The kinetic degradation process, which causes an increase in impedance, must be controlled in order for lithium-rich nickel and manganese oxide (LMNO) cathode materials to operate well during cycles. The precursors of lithium acetate, nickel acetate, manganese acetate, and citric acid as chelating agents were used to create the LMNO cathode materials using the sol–gel process. The doping of different compositions does not alter the compounds’ crystal structure, according to the XRD pattern. The particles are in the sub-micron range, according to the SEM. EDAX examination examines the material’s chemical make-up and elemental makeup. To pinpoint the thermal degradation of the material and weight loss region of the synthesized transition metal oxide compounds, TGA/DTA analysis was looked at. At C/10 rates, half cells were put together and examined. Various cross sections due to electron-impact are reported for aluminum monochloride (Al 35 Cl) from low to high energy range. The scattering calculations in the low energy range (less than ionization) are accomplished using the well-known R-matrix method. Different scattering models are used to assess the convergence of results and to analyse the formation of resonances. All models converge around 4 eV, showing that the impact of correlation-polarization ceases on scattering. The shape resonance is observed in static-exchange model in the C 2 v point group corresponding to 2 B 1 , 2 scattering symmetry. It becomes a bound state in static-exchange-polarization model. In 18-states close-coupling model, this resonance state is almost bound. The elastic differential, integral and momentum transfer cross sections beyond ionization threshold are reported by using local potential-based single-center-expansion approach. A near overlapping nature of elastic cross sections is noticed from two different theories at the ionization threshold. This helps to predict the estimates of elastic cross sections over a broad energy range. The ionization cross sections are computed adopting the semi-empirical binary-encounter-Bethe model for electrons. The dissociative electron attachment process is also discussed. Resistant starch (RS) is beneficial for human health through its interactions with gut microbiota. However, the alignment between RS structures with gut microbiota profile and consequentially health benefits remain elusive. This review summarizes current understanding of RS complex structures and their interactions with the gut microbiota, aiming to highlight the possibility of manipulating RS structures for a targeted and predictable gut microbiota shift for human health in a personalized way. Current definition of RS types is strongly associated with starch digestion behaviors in small intestine, which does not precisely reflect their interactions with human gut microbiota. Distinct alterations of gut microbiota could be associated with the same RS type. The principles to describe the specificity of different RS structural characteristics in terms of aligning with human gut microbiota shift was proposed in this review, which could result in new definitions of RS types from the microbial perspectives. To consider the highly variable personal features, a machine-learning algorithm to integrate different personalized factors and better understand the complex interaction between RS and gut microbiota and its effects on individual health was explained. Wheat flour can form dough with a three-dimensional viscoelastic structure that is responsible for gas holding during fermentation and oven-rise, creating a typical fixed, open-cell foam structure of bread after baking. As the major components of dough, the continuous reticular skeleton formed by gluten proteins and the concentrated starch granules entrapped in gluten matrix predominantly determine dough rheological behaviors and bread qualities. This review surveys the latest literatures and draws out a conclusion from a plethora of information related to the filling effects of starch granules on gluten matrix and the cross-linking mechanisms between gluten proteins and starch granules, which is of great significance to provide sufficient scientific knowledge for development of bread with satisfactory attributes and quality control of end products. Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are central to many organic synthesis methodologies. Traditionally, Pd, Ni, Cu, and Fe catalysts are used to promote these reactions. Recently, many studies have showed that both homogeneous and heterogeneous Au catalysts can be used for activating selective cross-coupling reactions. Here, an overview of the past studies, current trends, and future directions in the field of gold-catalyzed coupling reactions is presented. Design strategies to accomplish selective homocoupling and cross-coupling reactions under both homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions, computational and experimental mechanistic studies, and their applications in diverse fields are critically reviewed. Specific topics covered are: oxidant-assisted and oxidant-free reactions; strain-assisted reactions; dual Au and photoredox catalysis; bimetallic synergistic reactions; mechanisms of reductive elimination processes; enzyme-mimicking Au chemistry; cluster and surface reactions; and plasmonic catalysis. Spintronics, also known as magneto-electronics or spin transport electronics, uses the magnetic moment of the electron due to intrinsic spin along with its electric charge. In the present review, the topological insulators (2D, 3D, and hydride) were discussed including the conducting edge of 2D topological insulators (TIs). Preparation methods of TIs along with fundamental properties, such as low power dissipation and spin polarized electrons, have been explored. Magnetic TIs have been extensively discussed and explained. Weyl phases, topological superconductors, and TIs are covered in this review. We have focused on creating novel spintronic gadgets based on TIs which have metallic topological exterior facades that are topologically defended and have an insulating bulk. In this review, topological phases are discussed as a potential candidate for novel quantum phenomena and new technological advances for fault-tolerant quantum computation in spintronics, low-power electronics, and as a host for Majorana fermions are elucidated. The coupling of spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom results in the emergence of novel states of matter across many classes of strongly correlated electron materials. A model example is unconventional superconductivity, which is widely believed to arise from the coupling of electrons via spin excitations. In cuprate high-temperature superconductors, the interplay of charge and spin degrees of freedom is also reflected in a zoo of charge and spin-density wave orders that are intertwined with superconductivity. A key question is whether the different types of density waves merely coexist or are indeed directly coupled. Here we profit from a neutron scattering technique with superior beam-focusing that allows us to probe the subtle spin-density wave order in the prototypical high-temperature superconductor La 1.88 Sr 0.12 CuO 4 under applied uniaxial pressure to demonstrate that the two density waves respond to the external tuning parameter in the same manner. Our result shows that suitable models for high-temperature superconductivity must equally account for charge and spin degrees of freedom via uniaxial charge-spin stripe fluctuations. While it is widely believed that high-temperature superconductivity in cuprate materials arises from an intertwined interplay between charge and spin fluctuations, the microscopic coupling between charge and spin degrees of freedom still remains a mystery in these materials. We investigated the doping and temperature evolutions of the optical response of Sr3(Ir1−xMnx)2O7 single crystals with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.36 by utilizing infrared spectroscopy. Substitution of 3d transition metal Mn ions into Sr3Ir2O7 is expected to induce an insulator-to-metal transition via the decrease in the magnitude of the spin–orbit coupling and the hole doping. In sharp contrast, our data reveal the resilience of the spin–orbit coupling and the incoherent character of the charge transport. Upon Mn substitution, an incoherent in-gap excitation at about 0.25 eV appeared with the decrease in the strength of the optical transitions between the effective total angular momentum Jeff bands of the Ir ions. The resonance energies of the optical transitions between the Jeff bands which are directly proportional to the magnitude of the spin–orbit coupling hardly varied. In addition to these evolutions of the low-energy response, Mn substitution led to the emergence of a distinct high-energy optical excitation at about 1.2 eV which is larger than the resonance energies of the optical transitions between the Jeff bands. This observation indicates that the Mn 3d states are located away from the Ir 5d states in energy and that the large difference in the on-site energies of the transition metal ions is responsible for the incoherent charge transport and the robustness of the spin–orbit coupling. The effect of Mn substitution was also registered in the temperature dependence of the electronic response. The anomaly in the optical response of the parent compound observed at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature is notably suppressed in the Mn-doped compounds despite the persistence of the long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. Magnonic devices operating at terahertz frequencies offer intriguing prospects for high-speed electronics with minimal energy dissipation However, guiding and manipulating terahertz magnons via external parameters present formidable challenges. Here we report the results of magnetic Raman scattering experiments on the antiferromagnetic spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 under uniaxial stress. We find that the energies of zone-center magnons are extremely stress sensitive: lattice strain of 0.1% increases the magnon energy by 40%. The magnon response is symmetric with respect to the sign of the applied stress (tensile or compressive), but depends strongly on its direction in the IrO2 planes. A theory based on coupling of the spin-orbit-entangled iridium magnetic moments to lattice distortions provides a quantitative explanation of the Raman data and a comprehensive framework for the description of magnon-lattice interactions in magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling. The possibility to efficiently manipulate the propagation of terahertz magnons via external stress opens up multifold design options for reconfigurable magnonic devices. There has been significant interest in using spin-waves or magnons for information processing, due to their low energy dissipation and short wavelength at terahertz frequencies, however, manipulating magnons can be challenging.
