BiFeO3 is a multiferroic material with a perovskite structure that has a lot of potential for use in sensors and transducers. However, obtaining pure single-phase BiFeO3 ceramic with a low electrical conductivity via solid-state reactions remains a problem that limits its application. In this work, the suppression of secondary phases in BiFeO3 was studied by varying the compositional parameters and the sintering temperature. The addition of 1% Bi2O3 to the stoichiometric precursor mixture prevented the formation of secondary phases observed when sintering stoichiometric precursors. The pure phase ceramic had a p-type conductivity and a three-decade lower electrical conductivity as measured by impedance spectroscopy. Annealing of optimally synthesized material at different partial pressures of oxygen in an oxygen–nitrogen gas atmosphere showed that the reason for this type of conductivity lies in the high concentration of defects associated with oxygen. By annealing in various mixtures of nitrogen and oxygen, it is possible to control the concentration of these defects and hence the conductivity, which can go down another two decades. Materials with ferroelectric properties, low bandgap energies, high polarization, low loss, and thermal stability are essential for future solar-cell applications. Researchers have attempted to obtain such materials by using several approaches. In this vein, a novel approach is reported in this work using gamma ray irradiation. The effect of gamma radiation on the structural, optical, and ferroelectric characterizations of bismuth (Bi)-doped barium titanate (BaTiO3 (BT)), namely Ba0.95Bi0.05TiO3 ceramics (abbreviated as (Bi:BT)), was investigated. X-ray diffraction, structure refinement, and Raman study revealed the presence of a perovskite structure with a tetragonal phase in all investigated samples. Morphological study revealed a nonuniform grain size and some porosity. Gamma irradiation-induced combined effects were proved by a detailed analysis of bond lengths, bond angles, octahedral distortions, oxygen vacancies, and charge compensations. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study gave direct evidence of oxygen vacancies in the irradiated samples. After gamma irradiation, UV–vis study indicated a decrease in the bandgap from 3.14 to 2.80 eV and a significant increase in visible light absorption. Cole–Cole plots confirm as an increase in gamma-ray dose results in higher levels of electron hopping. Study of the P–E hysteresis loop demonstrated that ferroelectric properties could be maintained after gamma irradiation, with a slight decrease in remnant polarization. The behaviour of the P–E was correlated with increasing gamma dose in the investigated ceramics, demonstrating a strong gamma dependence in the loops' profile. This review paper focuses on perovskite-type materials as (photo)catalysts for energy and environmental applications. After a short introduction and the description of the structure of inorganic and hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites, the methods of preparation of inorganic perovskites both as powders via chemical routes and as thin films via laser-based techniques are tackled with, for the first, an analysis of the influence of the preparation method on the specific surface area of the material obtained. Then, the (photo)catalytic applications of the perovskites in energy production either in the form of hydrogen via water photodecomposition or by methane combustion, and in the removal of organic pollutants from waste waters, are reviewed. On the basis of dielectric measurements performed in a wide temperature range (173–373 K), a comprehensive analysis of the dielectric and electrical properties of magnetite nanoparticles electrical conduction mechanism of compressed spherical shaped Fe3O4 nanoparticles was proposed. The electrical conductivity of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was related to two different mechanisms (correlated barrier hopping and non-overlapping small polaron tunneling mechanisms); the transition between them was smooth. Additionally, role of grains and grain boundaries with charge carrier mobility and with observed hopping mechanism was described in detail. It has been confirmed that conductivity dispersion (as a function of frequencies) is closely related to both the long-range mobility (conduction mechanism associated with grain boundaries) and to the short-range mobility (conduction mechanism associated with grains). Calculated electron mobility increases with temperature, which is related to the decreasing value of hopping energy for the tunneling of small polarons.
