We increase the spectroscopic completeness of the 100 pc white dwarf sample in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint with 840 additional spectra. Our spectroscopy is 86% complete for white dwarfs hotter than T _eff = 5000 K, where H α remains visible and provides reliable constraints on the atmospheric composition. We identify 2108 DA white dwarfs with pure hydrogen atmospheres, and show that ultramassive DA white dwarfs with M ≥ 1.1 M _⊙ are an order of magnitude less common below 10,000 K. This is consistent with a fraction of them getting stuck on the crystallization sequence due to ^22 Ne distillation. In addition, there are no ultramassive DA white dwarfs with M ≥ 1.1 M _⊙ and T _eff ≤ 6000 K in our sample, likely because Debye cooling makes them rapidly fade away. We detect a significant trend in the fraction of He atmosphere white dwarfs as a function of temperature; the fraction increases from 9% at 20,000 K to 32% at 6000 K. This provides direct evidence of convective mixing in cool DA white dwarfs. Finally, we detect a relatively tight sequence of low-mass DQ white dwarfs in color–magnitude diagrams for the first time. We discuss the implications of this tight DQ sequence, and conclude with a discussion of the future prospects from the upcoming Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite mission and the large-scale multi-fiber spectroscopic surveys.

We present a comprehensive analysis of oscillations of the helium-rich white dwarf DBV star EPIC 248705247 (SDSS J102106.69+082724.8). We extract the light curves from 79.7 days of K2 Campaign 14 data and identify 21 independent frequencies, including three complete and three incomplete dipole modes, with an average frequency splitting of 20.37 ± 0.40 μ Hz. Our analyses reveal a rotation period of EPIC 248705247 of approximately 6.82 ± 0.07 hr, making it one of the most rapidly rotating DBV stars currently known. We utilize the White Dwarf Evolution Code ( WDEC ) to compute models to look for the seismic best-fitted model, yielding the following stellar parameters: M / M _⊙ = 0.650 ± 0.003, T _eff = 23,660 ± 68 K, $\mathrm{log}({M}_{\mathrm{env}}/{M}_{* })=-2.01\pm 0.01$ and $\mathrm{log}({M}_{\mathrm{He}}/{M}_{* })\,=-4.90\pm 0.05$ . We also explore the phenomenon of mode trapping, as well as the potential influence of a weak magnetic field. We find that this star is located near the red edge of the theoretical instability strip of DBVs. Hence, our asteroseismological analysis of EPIC 248705247 provides the properties and behaviors of a rapidly rotating DBV.

We present observations and analyses of eight white dwarf stars (WDs) that have accreted rocky material from their surrounding planetary systems. The spectra of these helium-atmosphere WDs contain detectable optical lines of all four major rock-forming elements (O, Mg, Si, and Fe). This work increases the sample of oxygen-bearing WDs with parent body composition analyses by roughly 33%. To first order, the parent bodies that have been accreted by the eight WDs are similar to those of chondritic meteorites in relative elemental abundances and oxidation states. Seventy-five percent of the WDs in this study have observed oxygen excesses implying volatiles in the parent bodies with abundances similar to those of chondritic meteorites. Three WDs have oxidation states that imply more reduced material than found in CI chondrites, indicating the possible detection of Mercury-like parent bodies, but are less constrained. These results contribute to the recurring conclusion that extrasolar rocky bodies closely resemble those in our solar system, and do not, as a whole, yield unusual or unique compositions.

In the framework of our extensive modeling study of the spectral evolution of white dwarfs, we present here a new set of detailed calculations of the transport of residual hydrogen in helium-rich white dwarfs. First, we investigate the so-called float-up process at high effective temperatures, whereby the upward diffusion of trace hydrogen leads to the formation of a hydrogen atmosphere. We examine the dependence of this phenomenon on the initial hydrogen abundance and on the strength of the radiative wind that opposes gravitational settling. Combined with our empirical knowledge of spectral evolution, our simulations provide new quantitative constraints on the hydrogen content of the hot helium-dominated white dwarf population. Then, we study the outcome of the so-called convective dilution process at low effective temperatures, whereby the superficial hydrogen layer is mixed within the underlying helium-rich envelope. In stark contrast with previous works on convective dilution, we demonstrate that, under reasonable assumptions, our models successfully reproduce the observed atmospheric composition of cool DBA stars, thereby solving one of the most important problems of the theory of spectral evolution. This major improvement is due to our self-consistent modeling of the earlier float-up process, which predicts the existence of a massive hydrogen reservoir underneath the thin superficial layer. We argue that the trace hydrogen detected at the surface of DBA white dwarfs is, in most cases, of primordial origin rather than the result of external accretion.

We continue our comprehensive theoretical investigation of the spectral evolution of white dwarfs based on sophisticated simulations of element transport. In this paper, we focus on the transformation of PG 1159 stars into DO/DB white dwarfs due to the gravitational settling of heavy elements and then into DQ white dwarfs through the convective dredge-up of carbon. We study the impact of several physical parameters on the evolution of the surface carbon abundance over a wide range of effective temperatures. In the hot PG 1159 and DO phases, our calculations confirm that the temperature of the PG 1159-to-DO transition depends sensitively on the stellar mass and the wind mass-loss rate. We show that measured carbon abundances of DOZ white dwarfs are mostly accounted for by our models, with the notable exception of the coolest DOZ stars. In the cooler DB and DQ phases, the predicted atmospheric composition is strongly influenced by the stellar mass, the thickness of the envelope, the initial carbon content, the efficiency of convective overshoot, and the presence of residual hydrogen. We demonstrate that, under reasonable assumptions, our simulations reproduce very well the observed carbon abundance pattern of DQ stars, which thus allows us to constrain the extent of the overshoot region in cool helium-rich white dwarfs. We also argue that our calculations naturally explain a number of recent empirical results, such as the relative excess of low-mass DQ stars and the presence of trace hydrogen and/or carbon at the surface of most DC and DZ stars. We present a dedicated search for new pulsating helium-atmosphere (DBV) white dwarfs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using the McDonald 2.1 m Otto Struve Telescope. In total we observed 55 DB and DBA white dwarfs with spectroscopic temperatures between 19,000 and 35,000 K. We find 19 new DBVs and place upper limits on variability for the remaining 36 objects. In combination with previously known DBVs, we use these objects to provide an update to the empirical extent of the DB instability strip. With our sample of new DBVs, the red edge is better constrained, as we nearly double the number of DBVs known between 20,000 and 24,000 K. We do not find any new DBVs hotter than PG 0112+104, the current hottest DBV is at T eff ≈ 31,000 K, but do find pulsations in four DBVs with temperatures between 27,000 and 30,000 K, improving empirical constraints on the poorly defined blue edge. We investigate the ensemble pulsation properties of all currently known DBVs, finding that the weighted mean period and total pulsation power exhibit trends with effective temperature that are qualitatively similar to the pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs. We present analysis of a new pulsating helium-atmosphere (DB) white dwarf, EPIC 228782059, discovered from 55.1 days of K2 photometry. The long-duration, high-quality light curves reveal 11 independent dipole and quadruple modes, from which we derive a rotational period of 34.1 ± 0.4 hr for the star. An optimal model is obtained from a series of grids constructed using the White Dwarf Evolution Code, which returns M * = 0.685 ± 0.003 M ⊙, T eff = 21,910 ± 23 K, and log g = 8.14 ± 0.01 dex. These values are comparable to those derived from spectroscopy by Koester & Kepler (20,860 ± 160 K, and 7.94 ± 0.03 dex). If these values are confirmed or better constrained by other independent works, it would make EPIC 228782059 one of the coolest pulsating DB white dwarf stars known, and would be helpful for testing different physical treatments of convection, and to further investigate the theoretical instability strip of DB white dwarf stars. We present a detailed spectroscopic and photometric analysis of DA and DB white dwarfs drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with trigonometric parallax measurements available from the Gaia mission. The temperature and mass scales obtained from fits to ugriz photometry appear reasonable for both DA and DB stars, with almost identical mean masses of and 0.620 M⊙, respectively. The comparison with similar results obtained from spectroscopy reveals several problems with our model spectra for both pure hydrogen and pure helium compositions. In particular, we find that the spectroscopic temperatures of DA stars exceed the photometric values by ∼10% above Teff ∼ 14,000 K, while for DB white dwarfs, we observe large differences between photometric and spectroscopic masses below Teff ∼ 16,000 K. We attribute these discrepancies to the inaccurate treatment of Stark and van der Waals broadening in our model spectra, respectively. Despite these problems, the mean masses derived from spectroscopy— and 0.625 M⊙ for the DA and DB stars, respectively—agree extremely well with those obtained from photometry. Our analysis also reveals the presence of several unresolved double degenerate binaries, including DA+DA, DB+DB, DA+DB, and even DA+DC systems. Finally, we take advantage of the Gaia parallaxes to test the theoretical mass–radius relation for white dwarfs. We find that 65% of the white dwarfs are consistent within the 1σ confidence level with the predictions of the mass–radius relation, thus providing strong support to the theory of stellar degeneracy. It has been shown quite recently (Morales-Rueda et al. 2003) that dB stars, extreme horizontal branch (EHB) objects in high probability all belong to binary systems. We study in detail the mass and angular momentum loss from the giant progenitors of sdB stars in an attempt to clarify why binarity must be a crucial factor in producing EHB objects. Assuming that the progenitors of EHB objects belong to binaries with initial separations of a roughly a hundred solar radii and fill in their critical Roche lobes while close to the tip of red giant branch, we have found that considerable shrinkage of the orbit can be achieved due to a combined effect of angular momentum loss from the red giant and appreciable accretion on its low mass companion on the hydrodynamical timescale of the donor, resulting in formation of helium WD with masses roughly equal to a half solar mass and thus evading the common envelope stage. A simple approximative analytical formula for mass loss rate from Roche lobe filling giant donor has been proposed depending on mass, luminosity and radius of donor. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Context. The latest Gaia data release in July 2022, DR3, in addition to the refinement of the astrometric and photometric parameters from DR2, added a number of important data products to those available in earlier releases, including radial velocity data, information on stellar multiplicity, and XP spectra of a selected sample of stars. Gaia has proved to be an important search tool for white dwarf stars, which are readily identifiable from their absolute G magnitudes as low luminosity objects in the Hertzsprung–Russell (H–R) diagram. Each data release has yielded large catalogs of white dwarfs, containing several hundred thousand objects, far in excess of the numbers known from all previous surveys (∼40 000). While the normal Gaia photometry (G, GBP, and GRP bands) and astrometry can be used to identify white dwarfs with high confidence, it is much more difficult to parameterize the stars and determine the white dwarf spectral type from this information alone. Observing all stars in these catalogs with follow-up spectroscopy and photometry is also a huge logistical challenge with current facilities. Aims. The availability of the XP spectra and synthetic photometry presents an opportunity for a more detailed spectral classification and measurement of the effective temperature and surface gravity of Gaia white dwarfs. Methods. A magnitude limit of G < 17.6 was applied to the routine production of XP spectra for Gaia sources, which would have excluded most white dwarfs. Therefore, we created a catalog of 100 000 high-quality white dwarf identifications for which XP spectra were processed, with a magnitude limit of G < 20.5. Synthetic photometry was computed for all these stars, from the XP spectra, in Johnson, SDSS, and J-PAS, published as the Gaia Synthetic Photometry Catalog – White Dwarfs (GSPC-WD). We took this catalog and applied machine learning techniques to provide a classification of all the stars from the XP spectra. We have then applied an automated spectral fitting program, with χ-squared minimization, to measure their physical parameters (effective temperature and log g) from which we could estimate the white dwarf masses and radii. Results. We present the results of this work, demonstrating the power of being able to classify and parameterize such a large sample of ≈100 000 stars. We report on a comparison of spectroscopic analyses for hydrogen (DA) and helium atmosphere (DB) white dwarfs with Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) parallaxes and photometry. We assume a reddening law and a mass–radius relation to connect the effective temperatures (T eff) and surface gravities (log  g) to masses and radii. This allows the comparison of two largely independent sets of fundamental parameters for 7039 DA and 521 DB stars with high-quality observations. This subset of the Gaia white dwarf sample is large enough to detect systematic trends in the derived parameters. We find that spectroscopic and photometric parameters generally agree within uncertainties when the expectation of a single star is verified. Gaia allows the identification of a small systematic offset in the temperature scale between the two techniques, as well as confirming a small residual high-mass bump in the DA mass distribution around 11 000–13 000 K. This assessment of the accuracy of white dwarf fundamental parameters derived from Gaia is a first step in understanding systematic effects in related astrophysical applications such as the derivation of the local stellar formation history, initial-to-final mass relation, and statistics of evolved planetary systems. We present the first grid of 3D simulations for the pure-helium atmospheres of DB white dwarfs. The simulations were computed with the co5bold radiation-hydrodynamics code and cover effective temperatures and surface gravities between 12 000 K ≲ T eff≲ 34 000 K and 7.5 ≤ log g (cgs units) ≤ 9.0, respectively. In this introductory work, synthetic spectra calculated from the 3D simulations are compared to appropriate 1D model spectra under a differential approach. This results in the derivation of 3D corrections for the spectroscopically derived atmospheric parameters of DB stars with respect to the 1D ML2/α = 1.25 mixing-length parametrization. No significant T effcorrections are found for the V777 Her instability strip region, and therefore no 3D revision is expected for the empirical blue and red edges of the strip. However, large log g corrections are found in the range 12 000 K < T eff< 23 000 K for all log g values covered by the 3D grid. These corrections indicate that 1D model atmospheres overpredict log g, reminiscent of the results found from 3D simulations of pure-hydrogen white dwarfs. The next step will be to compute 3D simulations with mixed helium and hydrogen atmospheres to comprehend the full implications for the stellar parameters of DB and DBA white dwarfs. Combination tones (CTs) generated by the inner ear have been widely investigated in the past, starting from the famous Tartini's "third tone." Instead, much less attention has been dedicated to the CTs generated by musical instruments. In this paper, the CTs generated by a set of violins of different quality and age have been investigated when playing a selected set of dyads. CTs were found in all of the violins, and the strongest of them occurred at a frequency below the lower note of the dyad. Its amplitude was strongly dependent on violin and dyad played and was greatest in two old Italian violins and decreased down to a minimum in a factory-made violin. All of these findings are well explained by the boosting action of A0, the main air resonance of the violin that correlates well with the strongest CT. A listening test, performed using selected dyads and violins, showed that the differences between dyads with and without CTs were correctly recognized by a group of professional and amateur musicians, suggesting a possible musical significance of the main CT. Polluted white dwarfs (WDs) offer a unique way to study the bulk compositions of exoplanetary material, but it is not always clear if this material originates from comets, asteroids, moons, or planets. We combine N -body simulations with an analytical model to assess the prevalence of extrasolar moons as WD polluters. Using a sample of observed polluted WDs, we find that the extrapolated parent body masses of the polluters are often more consistent with those of many solar system moons, rather than solar-like asteroids. We provide a framework for estimating the fraction of WDs currently undergoing observable moon accretion based on results from simulated WD planetary and moon systems. Focusing on a three-planet WD system of super-Earth to Neptune-mass bodies, we find that we could expect about one percent of such systems to be currently undergoing moon accretions as opposed to asteroid accretion.
