Abstract

We report measurements of Xi and Xi-bar hyperon absolute yields as a function of rapidity in 158 GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions. At midrapidity, dN/dy = 2.29 +/- 0.12 for Xi, and 0.52 +/- 0.05 for Xi-bar, leading to the ratio of Xi-bar/Xi = 0.23 +/- 0.03. Inverse slope parameters fitted to the measured transverse mass spectra are of the order of 300 MeV near mid-rapidity. The estimated total yield of Xi particles in Pb+Pb central interactions amounts to 7.4 +/- 1.0 per collision. Comparison to Xi production in properly scaled p+p reactions at the same energy reveals a dramatic enhancement (about one order of magnitude) of Xi production in Pb+Pb central collisions over elementary hadron interactions.

Abstract

New data with a minimum bias trigger for 158 GeV/nucleon Pb + Pb have been analyzed. Directed and elliptic flow as a function of rapidity of the particles and centrality of the collision are presented. Abstract

First results from the NA49 experiment with a {sup 208}Pb beam on a Pb target at the CERN SPS with total energy of 33 TeV are presented. Data on transverse energy production, forward energy flow and rapidity density of negative hadrons are shown and discussed. The degree of nuclear stopping and the energy densities achieved are estimated for near head-on collisions.

4. Universal centrality and collision energy trends for v2 measurements from 2D angular correlations.

Abstract

We have measured the p t-integrated quadrupole component of two-particle azimuth correlations (related to quantity v2, denoted in this case by v2{2 D}) via two-dimensional (2D) angular autocorrelations on ( η, φ) for unidentified hadrons in Au-Au collisions at 62 and 200 GeV. The 2D autocorrelation provides a method to remove non-quadrupole contributions to v2 (conventionally termed “nonflow”) under the assumption that such processes produce significant dependence on pair-wise relative η within the detector acceptance. We hypothesize, based on empirical observations, that non-quadrupole contributions are dominated by minijets or minimum-bias jets. Using the optical Glauber eccentricity model for initial-state geometry we find simple and accurate universal energy and centrality trends for the quadrupole component. Centrality trends are determined only by the initial state (impact parameter b and center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\mathit{NN}}}$ ). There is no apparent dependence on evolving system dynamics (e.g., equation of state or number of secondary collisions). Our measurements of the quadrupole and non-quadrupole components have implications for the contributions to v2. They suggest that the main source of the difference between v2{2} and v2{4} (or v2{2 D}) is measured properties of minijets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first results from the NA49 experiment, using a large acceptance tracking detector with particle identification, are presented which have been obtained from the recent Pb-ion run at the CERN SPS. Abstract

Multiparticle dynamics is tightly connected with the fundamental properties of the QCD vacuum. This was reflected in the Scientific Programme of the XXVIII International Symposium on Multiparticle Dynamics. Emphasis was given during the sessions to the collective phenomena at high energies, including: fluctuations and correlations, quark-gluon plasma, QCD phase transitions (fractals, intermittency, wavelets), the QCD structure of the Pomeron, and new aspects of multiplicity distributions.

Abstract

CRIS (Catania Relativistic Ion Studies) is a recently established series of topical conferences held every two years in the Catania area, in Italy. The aim of these conferences is to discuss specific hot topics in heavy ion physics.The second CRIS Conference was devoted to the interferometric techniques for measuring the size of nuclear sources as well as astrophysical objects. The thrust of its program was somewhat cross-disciplinary. A historical review of early astronomical measurements, and some current applications in astrophysics were included, although the bulk of the program was concerned with the use of HBT in inferring nuclear source sizes and lifetimes.
