Conducting polymers are mixed ionic-electronic conductors that are emerging candidates for neuromorphic computing, bioelectronics and thermoelectrics. However, fundamental aspects of their many-body correlated electron-ion transport physics remain poorly understood. Here we show that in p-type organic electrochemical transistors it is possible to remove all of the electrons from the valence band and even access deeper bands without degradation. By adding a second, field-effect gate electrode, additional electrons or holes can be injected at set doping states. Under conditions where the counterions are unable to equilibrate in response to field-induced changes in the electronic carrier density, we observe surprising, non-equilibrium transport signatures that provide unique insights into the interaction-driven formation of a frozen, soft Coulomb gap in the density of states. We present an original multistate projective diabatization scheme based on Green's function formalisms that allows the systematic mapping of many-body ab initio calculations onto effective excitonic models. This method inherits the ability of the Bethe-Salpeter equation to describe Frenkel molecular excitons and intermolecular charge-transfer states equally well, as well as the possibility for an effective description of environmental effects in a QM/MM framework. The latter is found to be a crucial element in order to obtain accurate model parameters for condensed phases and to ensure their transferability to excitonic models for extended systems. The method is presented through a series of examples illustrating its quality, robustness, and internal consistency.

Background and Purpose: Although there is extensive evidence about the safety of monoclonal antibodies against calcitonin gene-related peptide (anti-CGRP mAbs) in combination with traditional drugs, scarce data are available on the safety of their combination with other mAbs. This study aimed to evaluate the 6-month effectiveness and tolerability of anti-CGRP mAbs in combination with other mAbs for different diseases., Methods: Patients included in the Italian Headache Registry and treated concomitantly with an anti-CGRP mAb and another mAb were included. Effectiveness outcomes for migraine included reduction from baseline of monthly headache days (MHDs), Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) score, Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6) scores, and Patients' Global Impression of Change (PGIC) scale. Adverse events (AEs) were recorded., Results: Thirty-eight patients were included. In 27 patients (71.1%), the anti-CGRP mAb was added to a previously ongoing mAb. Nine patients (23.7%) discontinued one of the two mAbs before the end of treatment (seven discontinued the anti-CGRP mAb and two the other mAb). One patient discontinued for AEs. Anti-CGRP mAbs were discontinued due to ineffectiveness (n = 5, 55.5%) and one each (11.1%) for clinical remission and lost to follow-up. MHDs significantly decreased from baseline to 3 months (p < 0.0001) and 6 months (p < 0.001), as did the MIDAS and the HIT-6 scores at 3 and 6 months (p < 0.001). For anti-CGRP mAbs, 27.4% of patients reported PGIC ≥ 5 at 3 months and 48.3% at 6 months. Mild AEs associated with introduction of a second mAb were detected in six patients (15.8%)., Conclusions: In this real-world study, anti-CGRP mAbs showed safety and effectiveness when administered concomitantly with other mAbs., (© 2024 The Author(s). We show an unusual case of ulcerative colitis and sarcoidosis. This case has detailed images of skin lesions, biopsies and PET-CT results. There is limited evidence regarding the association of inflammatory bowel disease and other granulomatous diseases, especially sarcoidosis.

Objective .The pathophysiology of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer disease (AD) is still a matter of debate. Visual system might be precociously altered, especially for its cholinergic connections. We thus studied patients with aMCI compared to AD with paired-pulse flash-visual evoked potentials (paired-F-VEPs), a putative marker of cholinergic function. Methods. We enrolled 12 adult patients with aMCI and 12 with AD. 14 normal age- and sex-matched subjects acted as controls (HS). Stimuli were single flashes, with interspersed random flash pairs at critical interstimulus intervals (ISIs, 16.5 to 125 ms) with closed eyes. The "single" (unconditioned) F-VEP was split into a "main complex" (50 to 200 ms after the flash) and a "late response" (200 to 400 ms). As for paired stimulation, the "test" F-VEP emerged from electronic subtraction of the "single" F-VEP from the "paired"-F-VEP. Results. In the single F-VEP, P2 latency was prolonged in patients (aMCI and AD) compared to HS ( p  < .05). As to the paired F-VEPs, in aMCI the "late response" normal inhibition was abolished at ISIs 50-62.5 ms ( p  ≤ .016), compared to AD and controls. No changes were detected for the "main complex". Conclusions. Paired-F-VEPs demonstrate a defective neural inhibition in the visual system of patients with aMCI at critical intervals. It may represent a compensatory mechanism against neuronal loss, the failure of which may be involved in AD development. Excitons are realizations of a correlated many-particle wave function, specifically consisting of electrons and holes in an entangled state. Excitons occur widely in semiconductors and are dominant excitations in semiconducting organic and low-dimensional quantum materials. To efficiently harness the strong optical response and high tuneability of excitons in optoelectronics and in energy-transformation processes, access to the full wavefunction of the entangled state is critical, but has so far not been feasible. Here, we show how time-resolved photoemission momentum microscopy can be used to gain access to the entangled wavefunction and to unravel the exciton's multiorbital electron and hole contributions. For the prototypical organic semiconductor buckminsterfullerene (C 60 ), we exemplify the capabilities of exciton tomography and achieve unprecedented access to key properties of the entangled exciton state including localization, charge-transfer character, and ultrafast exciton formation and relaxation dynamics., (© 2024. The broadening in photoelectron spectra of polymers can be attributed to several factors, such as light source spread, spectrometer resolution, the finite lifetime of the hole state, and solid-state effects. Here, for the first time, we set up a computational protocol to assess the peak broadening induced for both core and valence levels by solid-state effects in four amorphous polymers by using a combination of density functional theory, many-body perturbation theory, and classical polarizable embedding. We show that intrinsic local inhomogeneities in the electrostatic environment induce a Gaussian broadening of 0.2-0.7 eV in the binding energies of both core and semivalence electrons, corresponding to a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.5-1.7 eV for the investigated systems. The induced broadening is larger in acrylate-based than in styrene-based polymers, revealing the crucial role of polar groups in controlling the roughness of the electrostatic landscape in the solid matrix.

The energetic landscape at the interface between electron donating and accepting molecular materials favors efficient conversion of intermolecular charge-transfer (CT) states into free charge carriers (FCC) in high-performance organic solar cells. Here, we elucidate how interfacial energetics, charge generation and radiative recombination are affected by molecular arrangement. We experimentally determine the CT dissociation properties of a series of model, small molecule donor-acceptor blends, where the used acceptors (B2PYMPM, B3PYMPM and B4PYMPM) differ only in the nitrogen position of their lateral pyridine rings. We find that the formation of an ordered, face-on molecular packing in B4PYMPM is beneficial to efficient, field-independent charge separation, leading to fill factors above 70% in photovoltaic devices. This is rationalized by a comprehensive computational protocol showing that, compared to the more amorphous and isotropically oriented B2PYMPM, the higher structural order of B4PYMPM molecules leads to more delocalized CT states. Furthermore, we find no correlation between the quantum efficiency of FCC radiative recombination and the bound or unbound nature of the CT states. This work highlights the importance of structural ordering at donor-acceptor interfaces for efficient FCC generation and shows that less bound CT states do not preclude efficient radiative recombination.

With the clear need for better cancer treatment, naturally occurring molecules represent a powerful inspiration. Recently, curcumin has attracted attention for its pleiotropic anticancer activity in vitro, especially against colorectal and prostate cancer cells. Unfortunately, these encouraging results were disappointing in vivo due to curcumin's low stability and poor bioavailability. To overcome these issues, herein, the synthesis of eight new pyrimidine-curcumin derivatives is reported. The compounds were fully characterized ( 1 H/ 13 C NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometri), UV-Vis spectroscopy), particularly their acid/base behavior; overall protonation constants were estimated, and species distribution, as a function of pH, was predicted, suggesting that all the compounds are in their neutral form at pH 7.4. All the compounds were extremely stable in simulated physiological media (phosphate-buffered saline and simulated plasma). The compounds were tested in vitro (48 h incubation treatment) to assess their effect on cell viability in prostate cancer (LNCaP and PC3) and colorectal cancer (HT29 and HCT116) cell lines. Two compounds showed the same anti-proliferative activity as curcumin against HCT116 cells and improved cytotoxicity against PC3 cells.

In this article, we present the mobilities of prolate ellipsoidal micrometric particles close to an air-water interface measured by dual wave reflection interference microscopy. Particle's position and orientation with respect to the interface are simultaneously measured as a function of time. From the measured mean square displacement, five particle mobilities (3 translational and 2 rotational) and two translational-rotational cross-correlations are extracted. The fluid dynamics governing equations are solved by the finite element method to numerically evaluate the same mobilities, imposing either slip and no-slip boundary conditions to the flow at the air-water interface. The comparison between experiments and simulations reveals an agreement with no-slip boundary conditions prediction for the translation normal to the interface and the out-of-plane rotation, and with slip ones for parallel translations and in-plane rotation. We rationalize these evidences in the framework of surface incompressibility at the interface.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is one of the deadliest malignancy and treatment options are deplorably limited. Better strategies of prevention are urgently needed but knowledge on risk factors remains scarce. Recent data suggested that arsenic (As) may be involved in GBC carcinogenesis but the question remains debated. To date, there are no data on As measurement in GBC samples. This pilot study aimed to measure As concentrations in tissue samples from patients with GBC compared to non-cancerous gallbladder (NCGB). Included patients underwent cholecystectomy at Hospital Clinico Universidad de Chile, Santiago in Chile, a country with high As exposure, between 2001 and 2020. Tissue samples were preserved in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks. Selected samples were retrieved, processed and submitted to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine As concentrations. A total of 77 patients were included, including 35 GBC and 42 NCGB. The two groups were comparable, except for age (68 vs. 49 years, p < 0.001). Measured in 11 GBC and 38 NCGB, total As was detected in 5 GBC (14%) compared to 0 NCGB samples (p < 0.001). GBC group also showed higher median values of As compared to NCGB (p < 0.001). Fused deposition modelling is one of the most widely used additive manufacturing techniques and the diffusion of 3D printers has increased in popularity even further in recent times. Since high precision is required in 3D printing, a good control over the extrusion process is necessary. In this regard, a crucial phenomenon to be accounted for is the die or extrudate swell, i.e., the enlargement of the cross-section of the strand when coming out of the printer nozzle. While this phenomenon has been studied in large scale extruders, it has not yet been investigated in depth for 3D printing processes. In this work, the die swell phenomenon observed in a printed PLA filament is studied by experiments and fluid dynamic simulations. A novel, easy-to-use, accurate and fast procedure for measuring the value of the die swell ratio during the printing process is developed, accounting for typical errors related to a non-constant strand diameter and possible oscillations of the filament with respect to the extrusion direction. As the printing velocity is increased, a linearly increasing swelling ratio is observed at low printing speeds. The trend flattens at moderate speed values. A sudden increase is found at high printing velocities. The swelling ratio measured with the proposed technique is compared with the results of multi-mode viscoelastic simulations at different temperatures. A fair agreement between the experimental measurements and the numerical predictions is found for printing velocities that are typically employed in commercial 3D printers, supporting the reliability of the developed procedure.

The formation of a line of equally spaced particles at the centerline of a microchannel, referred as "particle ordering," is desired in several microfluidic applications. Recent experiments and simulations highlighted the capability of viscoelastic fluids to form a row of particles characterized by a preferential spacing. When dealing with non-Newtonian fluids in microfluidics, the adherence condition of the liquid at the channel wall may be violated and the liquid can slip over the surface, possibly affecting the ordering efficiency. In this work, we investigate the effect of wall slip on the ordering of particles suspended in a viscoelastic liquid by numerical simulations. The dynamics of a triplet of particles in an infinite cylindrical channel is first addressed by solving the fluid and particle governing equations. The relative velocities computed for the three-particle system are used to predict the dynamics of a train of particles flowing in a long microchannel. The distributions of the interparticle spacing evaluated at different slip coefficients, linear particle concentrations, and distances from the channel inlet show that wall slip slows down the self-assembly mechanism. For strong slipping surfaces, no significant change of the initial microstructure is observed at low particle concentrations, whereas strings of particles in contact form at higher concentrations. The detrimental effect of wall slip on viscoelastic ordering suggests care when designing microdevices, especially in case of hydrophobic surfaces that may enhance the slipping phenomenon., (© 2022 The Authors. Curcumin is known for its therapeutic properties; among these, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer ones stand out. Besides, curcumin metal complexes have shown widespread application in medicine and can be exploited as lead structures for developing metal-based drugs. Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly bioavailable, mainly due to its instability in physiological conditions; this weakness is tightly connected to the presence of the β-diketo moiety undergoing tautomeric equilibrium. Stability and metal-chelating ability can be tuned by modulating the electronic effects and steric hindrance close to the β-diketo moiety; in addition, formation of a metal complex shifts the tautomeric equilibrium towards the β-keto-enol form and increases stability in biological media. Among the metals used in clinical therapy, gallium nitrate has shown to have significant antitumor activity against non-Hodgkin lymphoma and bladder cancer, thus indicating that gallium-based drugs have potential for further development as antineoplastic agents with improved therapeutic activity. Curcuminoids have demonstrated high affinity for gallium(III), allowing the formation of stable positively charged M:L 1:2 β-diketonate complexes that benefit from the therapeutic activity of both the metal and the ligand. Seven new curcumin derivatives were synthesized and completely characterized. The new derivatives retain the solvent-dependent keto-enol tautomerism, with the prevalence of the diketo form in aqueous solution. Enhanced stability in simulated physiological conditions was observed in comparison to the lead compound curcumin. The presence of Ga 3+ anticipates the dissociation of the enolic proton, allowing chelate complex formation, and simultaneously it shifts the tautomeric equilibrium towards the keto-enol form. A complete 1 H/ 13 C NMR and UV-Vis study was performed to define the metal-to-ligand stoichiometry ratio and the overall stability constants. In addition, we demonstrated that some of the derivatives have increased antiproliferative activity on colon cancer cells compared to curcumin and antioxidant properties. On the whole, the synthesized curcumin-based molecules may act as new gallium(III) chelators with improved stability with respect to curcumin and could open interesting perspectives for the development of novel therapeutic agents for cancer.

Molecular doping-the use of redox-active small molecules as dopants for organic semiconductors-has seen a surge in research interest driven by emerging applications in sensing, bioelectronics, and thermoelectrics. However, molecular doping carries with it several intrinsic problems stemming directly from the redox-active character of these materials. A recent breakthrough was a doping technique based on ion-exchange, which separates the redox and charge compensation steps of the doping process. Here, the equilibrium and kinetics of ion exchange doping in a model system, poly(2,5-bis(3-alkylthiophen-2-yl)thieno(3,2-b)thiophene) (PBTTT) doped with FeCl 3 and an ionic liquid, is studied, reaching conductivities in excess of 1000 S cm -1 and ion exchange efficiencies above 99%. Several factors that enable such high performance, including the choice of acetonitrile as the doping solvent, which largely eliminates electrolyte association effects and dramatically increases the doping strength of FeCl 3 , are demonstrated. In this high ion exchange efficiency regime, a simple connection between electrochemical doping and ion exchange is illustrated, and it is shown that the performance and stability of highly doped PBTTT is ultimately limited by intrinsically poor stability at high redox potential., (© 2021 The Authors. In this work, we study in detail the hydrodynamics and the Brownian motions of a spheroidal particle suspended in a Newtonian fluid near a flat rigid wall. We employ 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations to compute how the mobility tensor of the spheroid varies with both the particle-wall separation distance and the particle orientation. We then study the Brownian motion of the spheroid by means of a discretized Langevin equation. We specifically focus on the additional drift terms arising from the position and orientational dependence of the mobility matrix. In this respect, we also propose a numerically convenient approximation of the orientational divergence of the mobility matrix that is required in the solution of the Langevin equation. Our results illustrate that both hydrodynamics and Brownian motions of a spheroidal particle near a confining wall display novel features from those of a sphere in the same type of confinement. Doped organic semiconductors are critical to emerging device applications, including thermoelectrics, bioelectronics, and neuromorphic computing devices. It is commonly assumed that low conductivities in these materials result primarily from charge trapping by the Coulomb potentials of the dopant counterions. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study rebutting this belief. Using a newly developed doping technique based on ion exchange, we prepare highly doped films with several counterions of varying size and shape and characterize their carrier density, electrical conductivity, and paracrystalline disorder. In this uniquely large data set composed of several classes of high-mobility conjugated polymers, each doped with at least five different ions, we find electrical conductivity to be strongly correlated with paracrystalline disorder but poorly correlated with ionic size, suggesting that Coulomb traps do not limit transport. A general model for interacting electrons in highly doped polymers is proposed and carefully parametrized against atomistic calculations, enabling the calculation of electrical conductivity within the framework of transient localization theory. Theoretical calculations are in excellent agreement with experimental data, providing insights into the disorder-limited nature of charge transport and suggesting new strategies to further improve conductivities.

The cellular morphology of thermoplastic polymeric foams is a key factor for their performances. Three possible foam morphologies exist, namely, with closed cells, interconnected cellular structure, and open cells. In the gas foaming technology, a physical blowing agent, e.g., CO2 or N2, is used to form bubbles at high pressure in softened/melted polymers. As a consequence of a pressure quench, the bubbles grow in the liquid matrix until they impinge and possibly break the thin liquid films among them. If film breakage happens, the broken film may retract due to the elastic energy accumulated by the polymeric liquid during the bubble growth. This, in turn, determines the final morphology of the foam. In this work, we experimentally study the growth of CO2 bubbles in a poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) matrix under different pressure conditions. In addition, we perform three-dimensional direct numerical simulations to support the experimental findings and rationalize the effects of the process parameters on the elastic energy accumulated in the liquid at the end of the bubble growth, and thus on the expected morphology of the foam. To do that, we also extend the analytic model available in the literature for the growth of a single bubble in a liquid to the case of a liquid with a multi-mode viscoelastic constitutive equation.

The control over material properties attainable through molecular doping is essential to many technological applications of organic semiconductors, such as organic light-emitting diodes or thermoelectrics. These excitonic semiconductors typically reach the degenerate limit only at impurity concentrations of 5-10%, a phenomenon that has been put in relation with the strong Coulomb binding between charge carriers and ionized dopants, and whose comprehension remained elusive so far. This study proposes a general mechanism for the release of carriers at finite doping in terms of collective screening phenomena. A multiscale model for the dielectric properties of doped organic semiconductor is set up by combining first principles and microelectrostatic calculations. The results predict a large nonlinear enhancement of the dielectric constant (tenfold at 8% load) as the system approaches a dielectric instability (catastrophe) upon increasing doping. This can be attributed to the presence of highly polarizable host-dopant complexes, plus a nontrivial leading contribution from dipolar interactions in the disordered and heterogeneous system. The enhanced screening in the material drastically reduces the (free) energy barriers for electron-hole separation, rationalizing the possibility for thermal charge release. The migration of a spherical particle immersed in a viscoelastic liquid flowing in a microchannel with a triangular cross-section is investigated by direct numerical simulations under inertialess conditions. The viscoelastic fluid is modeled through two constitutive equations to investigate the effect of the second normal stress difference and the resulting secondary flows on the migration phenomenon. The results are presented in terms of trajectories followed by the particles released at different initial positions over the channel cross-section in a wide range of Weissenberg numbers and confinement ratios. Particles suspended in a fluid with a negligible second normal stress difference migrate toward the channel centerline or the closest wall, depending on their initial position. A much more complex dynamics is found for particles suspended in a fluid with a relevant second normal stress difference due to the appearance of secondary flows that compete with the migration phenomenon. Depending on the Weissenberg number and confinement ratio, additional equilibrium positions (points or closed orbits) may appear. In this case, the channel centerline becomes unstable and the particles are driven to the corners or "entrapped" in recirculation regions within the channel cross-section.
