Color and color differences are critical aspects in many image processing and computer vision applications. A paradigmatic example is object segmentation, where color distances can greatly influence the performance of the algorithms. Metrics for color difference have been proposed in the literature, including the definition of standards such as CIEDE2000, which quantifies the change in visual perception of two given colors. This standard has been recommended for industrial computer vision applications, but the benefits of its application have been impaired by the complexity of the formula. This paper proposes a new strategy that improves the usability of the CIEDE2000 metric when a maximum acceptable distance can be imposed. We argue that, for applications where a maximum value, above which colors are considered to be different, can be established, then it is possible to reduce the amount of calculations of the metric, by preemptively analyzing the color features. This methodology encompasses the benefits of the metric while overcoming its computational limitations, thus broadening the range of applications of CIEDE2000 in both the computer vision algorithms and computational resource requirements. Repurposing drugs by uncovering new indications for approved drugs accelerates the process of establishing new treatments and reduces the high costs of drug discovery and development. Metal complexes with clinically approved drugs allow further opportunities in cancer therapy—many vanadium compounds have previously shown antitumor effects, which makes vanadium a suitable metal to complex with therapeutic drugs, potentially improving their efficacy in cancer treatment. In this review, covering the last 25 years of research in the field, we identified non-oncology-approved drugs suitable as ligands to obtain different vanadium complexes. Metformin-decavanadate, vanadium-bisphosphonates, vanadyl(IV) complexes with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and cetirizine and imidazole-based oxidovanadium(IV) complexes, each has a parent drug known to have different medicinal properties and therapeutic indications, and all showed potential as novel anticancer treatments. This work aimed to raise ocean awareness of 6th-grade students using marine invertebrates and integrating ludic activities within the curricula. Forty-two students from two public elementary schools from Northeast Brazil were selected. A pre-experimental design with pre-test/post-test was followed, using a questionnaire on ocean-environmental-related topics, and applying an inquiry-based learning approach. The ludic procedures were effective to improve the perception and learning of the students on the importance of oceans and the need for their preservation. Abstract Background  Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors reduce clinical symptoms and improve outcome in patients with hypertension, heart failure, and stable coronary artery disease (CAD) and are among the most frequently used drugs in these patient groups. For hypertension, treatment is guided by the level of blood pressure. In the secondary prevention setting, there are no means of guiding therapy. Prior attempts to target ACE-inhibitors to those patients that are most likely to benefit have not been successful, mainly due to the consistency in the treatment effect in clinical subgroups. Still, for prolonged prophylactic treatment with ACE-inhibitors it would be best to target treatment to only those patients most likely to benefit, which would considerably lower the number needed to treat and increase cost-effectiveness. A new approach for such “tailored-therapy” may be to integrate information on the genetic variation between patients. Until now, pharmacogenetic research of the efficacy of ACE-inhibitor therapy in CAD patients is still in a preliminary stage. Methods  The PERindopril GENEtic association study (PERGENE) is a substudy of the EUROPA trial, a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled multicentre clinical trial which demonstrated a beneficial effect of the ACE-inhibitor perindopril in reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in 12.218 patients with stable coronary artery disease (mean follow-up 4.2 years). Blood tubes were received from patients at the beginning of the EUROPA trial and buffy coats were stored at −40°C at the central core laboratory. Candidate genes were selected in the renin–angiotensin-system and bradykinin pathways. Polymorphisms were selected based on haplotype tagging principles using the HapMap genome project, Seattle and other up-to-date genetic database platforms to comprehensively cover all common genetic variation within the genes. Selection also took into consideration the functionality of SNP’s, location within the gene (promoter) and existing relevant literature. The main outcome measure of PERGENE is the effect of genetic factors on the treatment benefit with ACE-inhibitors. The size of this pharmacogenetic substudy allows detection with a statistical power of 98% to detect a difference in hazard ratios (treatment effect) of 20% between genotypes with minor allele frequency of 0.20 (two-sided alpha 0.05). Conclusion  The PERGENE study is a large cardiovascular pharmacogenetic study aimed to assess the feasibility of pharmacogenetic profiling of the treatment effect of ACE-inhibitor use with the perspective to individualize treatment in patients with stable coronary artery disease. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors reduce morbidity and mortality in patients with heart failure and are a first-line therapy for chronic heart failure. However, the first-dose may be associated with asymptomatic or symptomatic hypotension. In previous small series with different ACE inhibitors, different blood pressure responses have been reported. We defined hypotension as a fall in mean blood pressure ≥20 mm Hg and an absolute value of systolic blood pressure ≤90 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure ≤60 mm Hg. We studied the evolution of mean, systolic and diastolic blood pressure after initiation of perindopril and captopril treatments in a multicentre, double-blind, randomised, comparative, prospective study. One hundred seventy-six patients, mean age 64.9 ± 12.1 years, 116 men, with symptomatic heart failure, NYHA class II–IV, and a left ventricular ejection fraction <40%, were randomised to receive a single dose of captopril 6.25 mg ( n = 85) or perindopril 2 mg, ( n = 91). Systolic and diastolic blood pressure were recorded with Dinamap every 15 minutes during a baseline period of 2 hours, every 30 minutes from 2 to 7 hours and at 8 hours after the drug administration. Baseline characteristics of both groups were similar (demography, heart failure aetiology, NYHA class and blood pressure). Throughout the study there were 23 asymptomatic episodes of hypotension in the captopril group and 6 in the perindopril group ( p = 0.039). One patient in the captopril group had symptomatic episodes. Mean blood pressure falls were significantly higher in the captopril versus perindopril group at 60 minutes (−4.6 mm Hg vs +0.7 mm Hg; p = 0.004), 75 minutes (−4.4 mm Hg vs −1.1 mm Hg; p = 0.042), and 180 minutes (−3.4 mm Hg vs +0.0 mm Hg; p = 0.042). When elderly patients (≥70 years) were considered the same pattern of response was found. In summary, first-dose hypotension is not negligible on initiation of therapy with ACE inhibitors in heart failure patients with low ejection fraction. Perindopril results in significantly less reduction in blood pressure and a lower incidence of symptomatic or asymptomatic hypotensive episodes and allows a safer start of therapy than captopril in heart failure patients. Background: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors do reduce both mortality and morbidity in patients with left ventricular dysfunction, recent myocardial infarction and hypertension. However, the long-term effects in patients with coronary artery disease have not been established. The EUROPA study is designed to assess the long-term (3–4 years) effects of perindopril on the reduction of cardiac events in patients with proven stable coronary artery disease but with no evidence of heart failure. Study Design and Methods: EUROPA is a 12236 patient, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled and multicentre trial. EUROPA had an initial run-in period of 4 weeks during which patients received 4 and then 8 mg of perindopril daily to assess tolerance to maximum dose. This was followed by a double-blind randomisation to either perindopril or placebo. Patients were followed-up at 3 and 6 months and then 6 monthly until the last patient included in the main study completes the 3-year follow-up. EUROPA includes five sub-studies. Each of these sub-studies investigates the effects of perindopril on a different aspect of coronary artery disease: endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis progression or regression, diabetes mellitus, inflammation, thrombosis, neurohormonal activation. Aims To compare the effect of trimetazidine (TMZ) versus placebo administered during the acute phase of myocardial infarction on long- and short-term mortality.Methods and Results EMIP–FR (European Myocardial Infarction Project–Free Radicals) was a prospective, double-blind, European multicentre trial in which 19725 patients, presenting symptoms of acute myocardial infarction within the previous 24h were randomized. Stratification was according to thrombolytic therapy (56%) or not (44%). An intravenous bolus injection of trimetazidine (40mg) was given just before or simultaneously with thrombolysis, followed by continuous infusion (60mg.24h−1) for 48h. Overall, no difference was found between trimetazidine and placebo for the main end-point, short-term (35-day) mortality, (P=0·98) in an intention-to-treat analysis. This was the result of opposing trends in the two strata. Thrombolysed patients showed a tendency towards more short-term deaths with trimetazidine, compared to placebo (trimetazidine: 11·3%, placebo: 10·5%, P=0·15) and non-thrombolysed patients the converse (trimetazidine: 14·0%, placebo: 15·1%, P=0·14). In a per-protocol analysis the beneficial effect of trimetazidine for non-thrombolysed patients became statistically significant (trimetazidine: 13·3%, placebo: 15·1%,P =0·027).Conclusion Trimetazidine does not reduce mortality in patients undergoing thrombolytic therapy; however, it might have some beneficial effect for non-thrombolysed patients.
