8. United with Christ : Martin Luther and Christian Mysticism

- Mysticism--History.--Germany
- Abstract
In this collection of essays newly published in English, Volker Leppin restores a holistic understanding of Martin Luther's development amid a late-medieval context strongly influenced by mysticism. Far from marking a clean break from earlier ideas, Luther's emerging theology drew upon deep wells of both personal mystical experience and the guidance of earlier mystics. Meister Eckhart's student, the fourteenth-century priest and theologian John Tauler, was an especially important source of inspiration for the young Luther, though he was also an avid student of figures such as Bernard of Clairvaux.Leppin's careful research overturns conceptions of late-medieval mysticism as inherently works-oriented, illuminating instead how Tauler and others influenced Luther's emerging views on indulgences, the Passion, the Eucharist, and theological tenets including the concepts of law and gospel, justification, and the priesthood of all believers. United with Christ continues to expand upon threads drawn in Leppin's 2024 Sola: Christ, Grace, Faith, and Scripture Alone in Martin Luther's Theology, helping us understand the emergence of the Reformation as an innovative series of developments from, rather than an absolute rupture with, late-medieval Christianity.

- Jesus Christ—Person and offices, Bible. Epistles of Paul—Theology, Mystical union
- Abstract
Paul's most common phrase was'in Christ.'It is a tiny phrase, used almost as frequently as punctuation, yet within it is abbreviated a whole universe of delight which many of us have barely tasted. For Paul being in Christ is so normal he never even explains what he means by it, or what he means by Christ dwelling in us for that matter. He is not exactly forthcoming about what exactly is involved in us having been crucified with, or having died with, been buried with, raised with, or seated with Christ either. He just expects us to keep up. What he does give us are a few little hints at what this union with Christ does. We get glimpses into the amazing things it does for us. In forty days we visit just about every time Paul uses a phrase like'in Christ,''in him,''with Christ,'and so on, meditating on each of the little hints that Paul provides. We do this in the hope of discovering just how deep this union goes.

- Abstract
What does it mean that the believers are ‘in Christ'(Rom 8:1; 2 Cor 5:17 etc.)? The phrase has become so common to Christian discourse that it obscures the original meaning. By analysing key passages and stripping back the interpretive layers, this book portrays ‘in Christ'in the light of Greek language usage. Insights from metaphor theory, onomastics, and ritual theory further the investigation. The book also addresses prepositional phrases like ‘with Christ'and how ‘in Christ'developed in the deutero-Pauline letters. This comprehensive perspective illuminates a crucial early-Christian phrase and how believers viewed their relationship to Christ.

- Abstract
What does episcopal fraternity and communio look like? This central question is explored through the erudition and experience of Archbishop Anthony Fisher, Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Australia. Unity in Christ, based upon a series of addresses given to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) at their Special Assembly in 2022, delves into the themes associated with episcopal unity. By surveying the Christian tradition, beginning with the scriptures and then through various periods (Apostolic generation, patristic, scholastic, Vatican II, recent post Vatican II developments such as synodality) a coherent picture of episcopal togetherness is presented. What becomes clear is that unity among Christ's disciples and their successors is not simply an ideal but rather a constitutive element of their office. They are called to love as Christ loved, expressed above all through genuine friendship with one another. The consequences of this fraternity and communio have implications in areas such as spirituality, preaching and fraternal correction, among others. This second feature, the implications of episcopal fraternity and communio, are explored through Archbishop Fisher's twenty years of experience as a bishop of the Catholic Church. By providing concrete examples of lived episcopal fraternity and communio, Fisher offers a glimpse into both the challenges and fruits of living out Christ's call that'they might all be one'(Jn 17:21).

- Abstract
Edited by Baptist scholars Steven A. McKinion, Christine E. Thornton, and Keith S. Whitfield, Confessing Christ: An Introduction to Baptist Dogmatics offers a unique and comprehensive exploration of Baptist theology. Grounded in the belief that theology is both exploratory and explanatory, the book introduces a historical, covenantal, ecclesial, and confessional approach to Baptist Dogmatics. Each essay delves into a specific area of dogmatic theology, covering essential topics such as God, Scripture, anthropology, Christology, salvation, ecclesiology, the sacraments, the Christian life, and eschatology. The volume editors emphasize the importance of renewing Baptist life and mission through a rediscovery of the rich theological heritage. By understanding and engaging with this tradition, Baptist Christians can express their faith more authentically in the contemporary context and future endeavors. The book's four key elements—historical, covenantal, ecclesial, and confessional—provide a structured framework for exploring core Christian doctrines within the context of Baptist dogmatics. Each chapter incorporates biblical exegesis and dialogue with at least one historical Baptist theologian. Confessing Christ stands as a significant contribution to the field of Baptist dogmatics, serving as essential reading for Baptist scholars, pastors, and church leaders seeking a deeper understanding of the Baptist theological tradition and its contemporary relevance.

14. Another Christ : Rediscovering Jesus, Francis, and Discipleship Today
- Author

Andrew D. Mayes and Andrew D. Mayes
- Abstract
This is a riveting book with bite, an exploration with edginess. Compelling and arresting images confront us with a fresh view of Jesus--and of ourselves, as we rediscover our vocation to be'Another Christ'for troubled times. Recent research into the first-century setting of the gospel and the author's years in the Holy Land cast unexpected light on both the identity of Jesus and our present calling, while Francis of Assisi reveals how this can be creatively lived out. We have a choice. If we keep before our eyes images of Christ that are comforting, soothing, familiar, traditional--then our Christian life may turn out to be prosaic, pedestrian, and predictable, a preservative to maintain the status quo. But if we allow our discipleship today to be unsettled and inspired by images of Christ that are dynamic, risky, outrageous, brave, passionate, radical--then we open ourselves to new possibilities: we embark on a liberating adventure, an odyssey of the soul, a pilgrimage, a voyage into untested waters. What will we choose? Do we dare to take the unpredictable path? And which route will respond most courageously to the needs of today's wounded world?

- Abstract
What is it about the practice of obedience to God that makes it significant for human happiness and sanctity? And how should the obedience proper to vowed religious life be understood relative to the responsibilities of conscience and personal freedom? In the present day, religious obedience is often viewed either as a negative cramping of personal autonomy by an external authority, or as a positive submission to law that somehow assures one's fidelity, but the common thread for both perspectives is a distinctly modern approach to obedience characterized by legalism and voluntarism. In Free for Christ, Mother Mary Christa Nutt, R.S.M., proposes a different approach to religious obedience that foregrounds virtue-based moral agency rooted in metaphysics and the mystery of God, examining obedience not simply in relation to commands and laws but as a spiritual, philosophical, and theological reality—one that situates the human person in relation to God, the Church, and those others who share this religious life. Taking her starting point from Thomas Aquinas, Nutt examines obedience as a dimension of prudence and worship, that is, as a way that the human being can become relative to God as first source and final end, and thus as a way that the grace of Christ can take deeper root as a path to authentic freedom and interiority. From this ground of Thomistic metaphysics and ethics emerges a theological anthropology of obedience closely tied to Aquinas's teaching on providence and religion.

- Abstract
Is discipleship about personal sanctification or social reform? Believers are divided on a question central to Christian identity: what does it mean to follow Jesus? For centuries, imitating Christ meant the pursuit of holiness, conforming the self to Jesus through self-sacrifice in order to join him in eternal life. But some Christians today consider this model to be self-centered. Instead, they say, true disciples ought to imitate Jesus in confronting corrupt social systems on behalf of the oppressed. In Imitating Christ, esteemed New Testament scholar Luke Timothy Johnson seeks the origin of this fissure. Surveying the New Testament, medieval mysticism, modern theology, and more, Johnson shows how twentieth-century social-gospel and liberation theologies created a new model of discipleship. He then evaluates the theological implications of the two models and asks what we can learn from each. Inspired by Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Thomas Merton, Johnson puts forward a vision of discipleship that can revitalize Christian witness in the world today. Replete with keen exegesis and spiritual insight, Imitating Christ reorients Christian living toward pursuing sainthood. Pastors and interested lay readers alike will rediscover a rich heritage in these pages.

- Abstract
Politics and diplomacy have always been as much about the social and cultural contexts within which political actors operate as they are about the political structures themselves. This was also true of the Roman Empire of the fourth century AD, ruled by the Emperor Constantine the Great--a society marked by social, religious, and political transformation as the empire came under the influence of the Christian Church. Studies of this period often note the difficulty of understanding its politics due to a lack of sources that discuss questions central to political theory. This has led to deprecating views of the Late Empire as an age of unquestioning despotism, political decline, and social decay. Recent scholarship has correctly pushed back against this viewpoint, emphasizing the vibrancy of art, architecture, and social life during this period; however, relatively little attention has yet been given to the deeply consequential effects of Christian theology on the period's politics. Christ the Emperor argues that the alleged absence of explicit political theorizing in fourth century texts is the result of a migration of these discourses from the realm of'secular'politics to that of public Christian theology, where questions fundamental to political theory were analyzed and debated in more far-reaching ways than ever before. When fourth century bishops and Emperors wished to discuss the pressing questions of legitimacy, succession, hierarchy, equality, unity, diversity, and power, they did so largely in and through Christian theology. To understand how these political and social actors thought about and enacted political theory, Nathan Israel Smolin turns to theological sources. In doing so, he reveals this period as one of profound political, social, and religious ferment, in which ideas and structures fundamental to the history of the following millennia were developed and contested--ideas that continue to shape our world today.

- Abstract
'Christ Mass'delves deep into the rich tapestry of Christmas's historical, theological, and sociological dimensions, revealing it as far more than just a holiday celebration. This comprehensive exploration traces the evolution of Christmas from its Latin origins through medieval times to contemporary practice, emphasizing its fundamental role as a communal expression of Christian faith and worship. The book's three main sections masterfully weave together historical evidence and theological insights, beginning with the etymological roots of'Christ Mass'and progressing through its doctrinal foundations.Drawing from ancient church documents, liturgical texts, and archaeological findings, it illuminates fascinating aspects of early Christian gatherings and how they shaped modern Christmas celebrations. Particularly intriguing is the book's examination of how communal worship practices evolved across different Christian traditions while maintaining their essential spiritual significance.Through its multidisciplinary approach, the work challenges readers to reconsider their understanding of Christmas as primarily a historical'Christ Mass'- a profound expression of collective faith and community. The author skillfully addresses contemporary concerns about holiday secularization while providing practical guidance for religious leaders and families seeking to incorporate traditional elements into their celebrations. This balanced perspective makes the book valuable for both scholarly readers and those simply seeking to deepen their appreciation of Christmas's spiritual dimensions.

- Abstract
In Jesus'time, his acts of healing and various demonstrations were phenomena that captivated many. Countless people experienced healings, mental restorations, and even resurrections. These events, labelled as ‘miracles'by the emerging church in subsequent decades and centuries, unfortunately downplayed Jesus'genuine impact on humanity by framing it as supernatural or otherworldly. Intriguingly, several of his disciples and followers carried forward his legacy, healing and teaching in Judea and surrounding regions with notable success. Imagine if this legacy had expanded exponentially and received unwavering support. It could have reshaped society on a global scale. A world transformed where harmony reigns, where wars are unthinkable, and where many of our modern-day institutions, like the healthcare system and the pharmaceutical industry, might not even exist due to widespread health and prosperity. Such potential underscores the magnitude of the missed opportunity. Yet, it also emphasizes that it's never too late for a renaissance of such profound teachings and practices.

- Abstract
Traditional evangelical theology, with its emphasis on individual responsibility and the independence of faith communities, has often failed to offer a robust ecclesial vision for the unity of Christ's church. Engaging this reality, Dr. Oleksandr Geychenko seeks to provide a theological framework for understanding the ecclesiological nature of Ukrainian Baptist church associations. He traces the history and development of Baptist unions in Eastern Europe, examining associational practices and organisational structure, along with the theological language used to describe the role and purpose of such unions. In dialogue with the covenant theology of Paul S. Fiddes, he demonstrates that church associations should be viewed as more than pragmatic entities. Rather, they are ecclesial bodies embodying covenantal unity, committed to mutual care and participation in Christ's mission to the world. While drawing from primary sources and ecclesial practices to provide a unique and significant contribution to local theology, this study bears relevance for engaging ecumenical relations across traditions and encouraging the unity of the broader global church.

- Spiritual life--Christianity
- Abstract
In Living Christ, Peter Feldmeier explores the Gospels as the premier revelation of the person, ministry, and salvation of Jesus Christ. Uniting biblical scholarship with a deep spiritual engagement with the Gospels, Feldmeier shows how the biblical word can access the prophetic words and saving work of Jesus to make them one's own. Each Gospel provides a unique interpretation of Christ and a distinctive expression of Christian discipleship. Feldmeier takes the reader slowly through each text so that they may richly engage the truths witnessed by the evangelists and become opportunities for interior transformation. Drawing on traditional and modern commentaries, as well as his own reflections, Feldmeier shows how the Gospels are essential in their own ways in coming to an intimate relationship with Christ and an authentic appropriation of biblical discipleship.

- Abstract
Understanding union with Christ as a frame of thought (as a motif or theme) is important for accessing Calvin's theology. While the union-with-Christ doctrine arises when Calvin explains the doctrine itself directly (especially in light of soteriology), the strong presence of this motif--union with Christ (union with the Triune God)--indicates its pervasiveness when other doctrines or theological themes are explained as well. This book suggests that we approach the notion of union of Christ as a theological frame of thought that touches on most of the doctrines and theological themes of Calvin's theology. This book deals with union with Christ as a motif or theme rather than as a doctrine.

- Abstract
Scripture is a beautiful mosaic of Christ. The earliest Christians expressed their faith with creativity through symbols and summaries. In Christ the Center, Tomas Bokedal explores the relationship of the rule of faith, nomina sacra, and numerical patterns with Scripture. The nomina sacra—scribal reverence for divine names within Scripture—display remarkable intentionality and theological reflection. The nomina sacra in turn directed the emerging rule of faith. These scribal practices reveal early devotional and theological preoccupation and guided the text's shape and interpretation in the early centuries after Christ. Christ the Center showcases early Christian reverence for Scripture—and especially for the One of whom Scripture speaks.

- Abstract
In The Preeminent Christ, Paul Washer declares the unmatched significance of the good news of Jesus Christ. Compelled by a desire for men to know God's love, Washer draws from the church's greatest theologians to herald Christ's centrality in revelation, salvation, sanctification, study, proclamation, and glory. The Preeminent Christ will stimulate readers to forsake their tendency to view worldly “needs” as central by zealously seeking this Christ in the gospel. Endorsements (take your pick, these are all heavy hitters): “The disciples saw Jesus shining like the sun on the Mount of Transfiguration. Today we see the glory of Christ shining in the gospel. Paul Washer lifts up our eyes to consider the supremacy of the gospel for the Christian life and ministry. Drawing from the wisdom of great preachers and teachers of the past, Washer offers a feast for the soul and a powerful exhortation to keep our eyes fixed on the gospel in all we do.” —Joel R. Beeke, president, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan “As any true believer knows, Christ must be our all or our nothing. This is because of who He is as the infinitely glorious God-man and because of the indescribably wonderful salvation He has procured for us. Paul Washer does an excellent job of showing us these breathtaking realities in this Scripture-saturated and historically reinforced book. It will leave you worshiping God as your soul is saturated afresh with the unsearchable riches of Christ!” —Conrad Mbewe, pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church and founding chancellor of the African Christian University in Lusaka, Zambia “I'm grateful for the voice and the pen of Paul Washer, who stands in stark contrast to the trifling superficiality of our generation. He understands and remains committed to the value and preeminence of the gospel, and he writes about it with passion and clarity. I love what he has done in this book, skillfully explaining the gospel, describing its incredible legacy, demonstrating its inestimable worth, and arguing convincingly for the gospel to have its rightful place—first place—in the study, conversation, fellowship, and worship of Christians individually and the church collectively.” —John MacArthur, from the foreword

- Abstract
Cardinal Francis E. George, O.M.I., was an exemplary pastor and heroic disciple of Christ. A native Chicagoan, he was told as a young man that he would never be a priest in Chicago because of a physical disability resulting from polio. He went on to be ordained a priest with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1963. The native son was appointed as archbishop of Chicago in 1997, created a cardinal in 1998, and served in Chicago until 2014, just months before his death in April 2015. Cardinal George was a prophetic voice in the Church — a man able to see things as they are and from the point of view of the whole Church. His episcopal motto, “To Christ be glory in the Church,” encapsulates his legacy, because every decision he made, every action he took, every suffering he endured was about serving others and pointing them to our Savior. Most of all, Cardinal George was a Christian in every sense. He was concerned about relationships and people, not careerism or advancement. He was attentive to the poor and those on the margins. He was a man of prayer, dedicated to Our Lady, and devoted to the Eucharist. He articulated the Faith and was committed to reform. He was honest, accountable, genuine, and holy. Admired for his pursuit and proclamation of the truth and his personal witness to the Gospel, Cardinal George remains a model for discipleship and leadership.

A HANDBOOK FOR THE BROKENA valuable guide for anyone dealing with PTSD, trauma and tragedy, family members of trauma victims, clergy who seek a better understanding of psychology, and for counselors who seek a better understanding of the role of faith in healing from trauma.THE CHRIST CURE is comprehensive handbook of healing for victims of trauma and their families, guiding the reader through a unique path of true restoration, inspired by the life and works of the Apostle Paul (a survivor of multiple traumas), by modern day mentors, the humbling personal experiences of the author, Psychologist, Navy veteran and former Member of Congress Dr. Tim Murphy, and reinforced by solid scientific research.Dr. Murphy's book is a faith foundation guide for healing the psychological problems in the wake of trauma. Awakened by his own failures, the author grasped for ways out of his deep depression and re-discovered inspiration in the life and works of the Apostle Paul, who himself lived a life filled with major traumatic experiences. It offers new insights into how life threatening abuse, chronic stress and self-inflicted trauma affects us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and most importantly, how we can heal.In the book, Dr. Murphy candidly describes his own fall from grace, his battle with depression and his humble confession that while he was trying to save the world he was losing his own soul; disconnecting from his faith and family. - Abstract
Huldrych Zwingli had an idea. To the shock of both Rome and fellow Protestant Martin Luther, he argued that Christ is not physically present in the Lord's Supper. Rather, the Eucharistic elements only represent Christ's body and blood. However, the unique basis undergirding his theory is often overlooked, both by his contemporaries and later commentators. He specifically understood the Lord's Supper to be patterned after the Passover meal, the meal of the Old Testament. His memorialist understanding was in fact based on the memorialist nature of the Passover. By bringing in Jewish scriptures to bear on our understanding of the Lord's Supper, his approach unlocks new questions that do not necessarily presuppose Greek metaphysics or a break from traditions. This work seeks to continue to develop the method Zwingli left behind, delineating a Eucharistic theology for the church today, one that gives careful consideration to God's actions in relation to Israel and therefore sees the meal not metaphysically, but historically and relationally.

- Abstract
Throughout the long history of Irish monasticism, the experience of women monastics has, until recently, been relatively sidelined. A desire to redress this inspired the decision in 2021 to dedicate the Fifth Glenstal History Conference to exploring the various ways in which women responded to the monastic and ascetic vocation in Medieval and Early Modern Ireland. Whether as practitioners or as patrons, women found creative and dynamic ways to pursue their calling as'Brides of Christ'between the fifth and the seventeenth centuries, often in the face of tremendous difficulties and challenges. Their lives of prayer and service are sometimes hard to glimpse but the combined interdisciplinary perspectives of these essays brings them into sharper focus. The collection also demonstrates the current vitality of research on this topic and includes contributions by both established and emerging scholars. The volume is dedicated to Dr. Dagmar Ó Riain Raedel in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Irish and European medieval history and, in particular, to the study of medieval Irish-German monastic relations.

This provocative novel, told from the perspective of Jesus's uncle Clopas, sheds new light on ancient questions.Jesus's charismatic teachings, his healing ability, and his miracles brought him fame, adoration, resentment, and ultimately death (or did they?). Interweaving biblical quotes with historical facts and speculation, DuQuette immerses you in a thought-provoking tale that presents a plausible case for how distorted the Jesus myth may have become. Who really was Jesus? King of the Jews? Son of God? Or simply a man caught up in the geo-political and religious intrigues of first-century Roman Palestine?Funny, tragic, and thrilling, this novel both inspires and challenges your thinking about Jesus.

- Abstract
This book uses the recent findings of cognitive and clinical psychology to draw a picture of the historical Jesus. The author uses recent research on conversational memory and clinical psychology in order to shine a light on the way Jesus was. This book argues that Jesus suffered from manic-depressive illness. He identified with God. He suffered from extreme mood changes and felt great compassion towards people. All of these are mental states which may be triggered by manic depression. Manic depression is not a dementing illness. This author is not saying that Jesus suffered from a backward type of psychosis. But manic depression, when manifested in talented persons, acts as a catalyst to trigger artistic creativity. Many great artists and poets have suffered from manic depression: Byron, Schumann, Tennyson, van Gogh, Fitzgerald, and Lowell, to name a few. It is among great poets and artists such as these that the author places the historical Jesus. This book therefore argues that the writers of the Gospels, when they record Jesus as asserting his divinity, were conveying an accurate picture of him. His assertions of divinity were not fabrications of the early church.

Based on lectures at Princeton Seminary, Edwards distills Barth's treatment of key questions in philosophical and systematic theology, offering a playlist of greatest hits on trinity, Christology, prayer, and others. With the care of a scholar and the energy of a stack of Peaveys, Christ Is Time testifies that the eternal God'gives it away'as time through Jesus Christ. - Abstract
Modern Christian apologists and evangelists employ a variety of tools designed to aid communities in their understanding of God and salvation via Christ's atonement. One of the ways that defenders of the faith add to their field is in discerning the real significance of the treasures found in Christ. This work begins by dissecting the true meaning of freedom in Christ from a Judeo-Christian viewpoint. Building on that foundation, it then evaluates the sociological phenomenon of postmodernism in many of its characteristics and approaches--both positive and negative. The goal is to find pathways through which the apologist can respond to postmoderns in pointing them to Christ. Finally, the work closes by discussing how a newfound understanding of freedom in Christ adds to the three main branches of apologetics: classical, reformed, and presuppositionalism.

- Abstract
The Abased Christ is the first monograph to be devoted exclusively to Søren Kierkegaard's Christological masterpiece, Practice in Christianity. Alongside an argument for a new translation of the work's title, it offers detailed textual commentary on a series of themes in Practice in Christianity, such as the person of Christ, contemporaneity, imitation, and Kierkegaard's philosophy of history. Anti-Climacus, the pseudonymous author of Practice in Christianity, presents to his readers a uniquely challenging understanding of who Christ is and what it means to follow him. The Christ of Anti-Climacus is not the glorious Christ who abides with the Father in heaven, but the abased Christ who is poor, marginal, offensive, and persecuted. Throughout Practice in Christianity, we are called not only to perceive the abased Christ, but to follow after him. The Abased Christ aims to enrich historical theologians'appreciation of Kierkegaard's Christology. However, it concludes by grappling with questions of power, agency, and sacrifice which have been at the forefront of contemporary theology in the 20th and 21st centuries, thereby suggesting how we might make sense of Kierkegaard's Christology today.

44. Putting on Christ : Augustine's Early Theology of Salvation and the Sacraments

- Abstract
Putting on Christ aims to situate Augustine's early soteriology and sacramental theology within the context of his personal history and intellectual development. Beginning with an extended analysis of the theology of salvation and sacramental efficacy contained within Augustine's Confessions (ca. 400), the study then traces the maturation of his views on these matters, beginning with his earliest extant works, the Cassicacum dialogues (ca. 386). The journey entails treating Augustine's earliest discussions of Christ's person and his saving work, as well as the believer's subjective experience of conversion and salvation. As Augustine's corpus shifts from philosophical dialogues to explicitly apologetic and scriptural-exegetical works, so too does his soteriological lexicon expand to include concepts and terms that will later become his stock-in-trade, such as the virtue of humilitas. And as his roles in the North African Church come to include participation in the presbyterate and the episcopacy, so too does his engagement expand to a wider set of polemical contexts, both anti-Manichaean and anti-Donatist. Putting on Christ tracks these and many other aspects of Augustine's maturing thought, showing where lines of both continuity and development lie and aiming to uncover their reasons. In doing so, it reveals Augustine to be a thinker and a teacher who continued to hone his understanding of salvation, the very heartbeat of Christian life and thought, as well as its relation to various other aspects of the Christian theological worldview, from Christology and anthropology to sacramental theology and ecclesiology.

- Abstract
One of the most beautiful books I ever read about the life of Jesus Christ. Not a theological work, which the author freely admits, but one that brings the life of Christ vividly before your eyes. The great change that He brought, how He preached and attracted the hearts of thousands comes to an emotional height with the crucification and His great sacrifice. It also explains why the jews were forced into diaspora by the Romans: because God wills it so. The link between the diaspora and the betrayal by Judas Iskariot is also elaborated upon. (Goodreads)

- Abstract
The Son of God is the wisdom of GodAugustine's love of wisdom drove him to Christ—and wisdom remained central to his thought. Modern biblical scholars and theologians have much to learn from one of Christianity's most prominent and prolific theologians. Retrieval of Augustine can revive and renew thinking on wisdom. In Christ, the Way, Benjamin T. Quinn recovers and evaluates Augustine's rich writing on wisdom. While many have acknowledged sapientia (wisdom) as central in Augustine, few have offered a full treatment of his definition of wisdom and how it ordered his thought. Quinn remedies this need, tracing the development of Augustine's thought from his earliest reflections to De Trinitate, his most systematic treatment of wisdom. For Augustine, sapientia is the incarnate Christ, who by the Spirit enlightens all God's people to see clearly, live virtuously, and participate in God—thereby restoring his people to his image. Quinn then brings Augustine into dialogue with contemporary wisdom scholarship, displaying where his biblically rooted, Christocentric, faith--first approach holds rich insights for scholars and Christians today.

- Abstract
The Parable of the Prodigal Son stands as one of the most powerful imaginings of the grace of God extended to fallen humanity: its themes of departure, longing, and embrace speak to the very heart of human existence. In Prodigal Christ Kendall Cox engages this timeless story as not only a parable of salvation but also a parable of atonement and election, and therefore a parable of the divine life. Far more than a depiction of God's abstract, general, or unmediated love for humankind, what it recounts is the primordial prodigality of the second person of the Trinity. Setting in conversation two innovative and highly resonant christological readings of the parable, found in Julian of Norwich's Revelations of Divine Love and Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics, Cox shows that the identity of Jesus Christ with the wayward son is a textually faithful interpretive trajectory arising from the Lukan story itself. Such an identification is illuminated by a Ricoeurean account of parable as metaphorized narrative and by aligning the parable along the intertextual threads to which both Julian and Barth appeal. The extraordinary divine welcome figured in the lost son's homecoming prompts Julian's unprecedented excursus on divine motherhood and compels Barth to speak, irreducibly, of the humanity of God. This famous story of God's tender condescension is theologically fecund not only because of its content but also because of its parable form. Through their creative retellings, Cox argues that Julian and Barth are not simply interpreting scripture christologically but rather doing Christology in the mode of parable. Embodying what we might call'parabolic theology,'these authors invite us to consider this narrative form as an exemplary and enduring theological genre particularly well suited to christological discourse. What emerges from this reading is a striking image of Christ the divine Son and Servant who goes into the far country in order to bear humanity's burden as his own, embodying an alien identity, taking it up into the divine life. This is our story, and the story of God.

- Abstract
A reflection on Christianity in Arab society. This work explores the Christian faith in the current intercultural context of Arab societies. It argues that Arab Christianity seeks to express the Christian faith through openness to Muslim otherness, existential conviviality, and fraternal solidarity. In order to safeguard not only the physical existence of these communities but also and above all the relevance and richness of their message of life, the theological reflection presented here takes on a three-part task. First, it faithfully describes the sociopolitical and sociocultural reality of the historical integration of Arab Christian communities. Second, it reinterprets the content of the Christ event with reference to the challenge of Muslim otherness. And finally, it offers a path for conversion that involves a form not only of evangelical practice, designed to foster bonds of fraternal solidarity between the inhabitants of the Arab world but also of shared spiritual quest for moral and political commitment.
