This study explores the representation of Singaporean Chinese diasporic identity in Hwee Hwee Tan's novel Mammon Inc. with the help of cultural linguistics. This article seeks to analyze how the novel contributes to understanding diasporic identity and cultural negotiation, with a focus on how the portrayal of the main character reshapes the delicate equilibrium between traditional values and global capitalist pressures. Drawing on Farzad Sharifian's cultural conceptualization framework and Gary B. Palmer's ethnosemantic analysis, this study focuses on cultural schemas and metaphors in the novel. We identify passages in Mammon Inc. that illustrate themes of identity negotiation, cultural displacement, and the impact of globalization on traditional values. Through the categorization of themes and metaphors, we aim to identify culturally relevant schemas pertaining to the Singaporean Chinese diaspora.4 We also employ Palmer's ethnosemantic analysis to expose how the novel's language reflects the cognitive and cultural frameworks of the protagonist. The metaphorical language used in the novel reveals the protagonist's struggle to balance familial expectations with personal ambitions, thus challenging simplistic narratives of identity. This analysis of Tan's novel enhances cultural linguistics and diaspora studies by deepening our understanding of how cultural and linguistic factors influence the representation and understanding of diasporic experiences. It underscores the importance of language and culture in the negotiation of identity, offering a nuanced perspective on the complexities faced by the Singaporean Chinese diaspora in a globalized world. The article focuses on assessing the capital of the global Chinese diaspora (overseas Chinese). Its objective is to estimate the absolute volume of this capital and analyze its potential impact on the economic development of individual countries and regions, including China itself. The author aims to compile and synthesize existing estimates of Chinese diaspora capital, covering studies conducted from 1949 onwards, to examine the methods used in these assessments and to propose an updated approach for evaluating this capital for the period from 2015 to 2023. Additionally, the study seeks to create original maps illustrating the geographical distribution of diaspora capital across countries and regions, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of regional GDP. Furthermore, it identifies key sectors of business activity and evaluates the influence of the Chinese diaspora on industry markets in specific countries and regions. A comparison is also made between the shares of diaspora capital and China’s accumulated outward foreign direct investment relative to the GDP of host countries and regions.The analysis is based on Chinese and international statistical data. The calculation of Chinese diaspora capital for 2015–2023, along with its geographical distribution, draws on data regarding the market capitalization and valuation of major overseas Chinese enterprises. For these calculations, the author identifies eight key countries and regions with significant overseas Chinese business activity (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, the United States, Hong Kong, and Fiji). The study estimates the share of large enterprises and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) among overseas Chinese businesses within these locations and globally, adhering to the assumption that 75% of Chinese diaspora capital is concentrated in these eight regions of high business activity.For qualitative evaluation, a comparative analysis method is applied. The current estimate of Chinese diaspora capital, as calculated by the author, is at least $5 trillion (excluding assets in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan unrelated to the Chinese diaspora). This capital spans five continents, holds substantial influence over the economies of more than 50 countries (including China), and serves as a significant external financial resource for China, especially in countries where China’s direct economic involvement is limited.

As higher education diversifies, students from underrepresented groups find themselves on campuses unprepared to support them. Academic advising can cultivate belonging or reify" cultural mismatches" when students' norms do not match institutional norms. Leveraging interviews with Chinese international, Chinese American, and European American undergraduates and advisors, this study examines whether cultural mismatches in advising exist for Chinese diaspora students and, if so, on what fronts. Findings reveal cultural mismatches in definitions of autonomy; the amount of student voice expected in advising; valuation of exploration; emphasis on passion; and types of socioemotional support. This study yields important findings for advisors to improve the cultural responsiveness of their advising.

This study explores how watching international sports is related to the identity of overseas Chinese. Starting from the social significance of mediated sports, the article constructs its conceptual framework through the symbolic power of sports, media events, imagined community, networked publics, and characteristics of the diasporic community. Based on this, the study carried out 10 interviews on the Chinese diaspora in the United Kingdom, summarized the mechanisms and ways of linking mediated sports with national unity, and revealed the factors that will probably cause change to this connection. The results show that the symbolic power of sports and the consciousness as Asian are ties of diaspora identity construction and form patriotism in sporting contexts. Meanwhile, the degree of integration into local society and their community preference are influencing the status of collective identity enhancement brought by mediated sports. This research explores the profound impact of digital media on the lives of Chinese immigrants in Ikebukuro Chinatown. It illustrates how the Internet and digital platforms have transformed their economic, social, and identity landscapes. Employing qualitative methods such as surveys and interviews, this study underscores the pivotal role of social media in creating expansive networks. These networks facilitate ethnic entrepreneurship and enhance cultural visibility, contributing to the deterritorialization of traditional community confines. This empowerment enables the Chinese diaspora in Ikebukuro to cultivate a rich, interconnected social tapestry that extends beyond geographic limitations. The findings underscore the central role of digital media mediatization processes in redefining immigrant experiences. Additionally, they promote deeper, more dynamic integration within the host society’s multicultural environment. This transformative shift emphasizes the emergence of a more fluid, networked form of community and identity among immigrants. It challenges conventional enclave models and offers new perspectives on diaspora engagement in the digital age.

Medan is a port city in Sumatra, Dutch East Indies, developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A special case among colonial cities, it featured a large number of Chinese migrants – a third party in addition to the colonizer and the colonized – who played a key role in its urbanization process. Highlighting a trichotomous power framework formed by the Dutch colonizer, the indigenous people and the Chinese diaspora, this paper argues that the Chinese diaspora, with the arrival of commercial elites, obtained opportunities to shape the backbone of the city through skilfully transforming their economic power into political and spatial power. Chinese economic activities such as property investment and co-development not only led to unconventional Chinese quarters but shaped the zoning and axiality of the whole city. The Chinese diaspora also shaped Medan’s streetscape and architecture through individual building design, which, in turn, strengthened their economic power by the careful manipulation of architectural elements from various sources to suit different purposes. The planning history of Medan represents an alternative trajectory to colonial urbanization often led by Europeans, highlighting an ambiguous and shifting power relation among three parties in a transforming colonial society. The paper focuses on assessing the influence of the Chinese diaspora (overseas Chinese, in Chinese: huaqiao-huaren) on the economic development of the People’s Republic of China in the course of the reform and opening-up policy (1979-2020s). The author has studied virtually all the key official documents of the PRC leadership, which effectively engaged the Chinese diaspora in the nation’s long-term strategy of socialist modernisation. Based on the analysis of a large body of academic literature and statistical data, the author identified three main stages in the development of overseas Chinese enterprises in the PRC: 1979-1991, original capital accumulation and the policy of labour-intensive production of export products; 1992-2007, an investment boom and the transition from labour-intensive to capital-intensive production of export products; 2008-early 2020s, the transition to high-tech production and the replacement of foreign enterprises. Each stage is characterised in the context of the PRC’s diaspora policy and key developments in China and the world. The paper analyses the sectoral structure of the business activities of overseas Chinese-owned enterprises in the PRC. It shows that for almost the entire period of the reform and opening up policy, these companies focused on manufacturing, while their interest in the service sector was also growing. In total, overseas Chinese invested USD1.9 trillion in the PRC between 1979 and 2022, accounting for more than 67% of China’s total FDI stock. The author concludes that the PRC leadership has rationally used the resources of the Chinese diaspora to ensure their full participation in China’s economic development during the reform and opening-up period.

"'Us' and 'Others': The Chinese Diaspora in Japan and the Negotiation of Their Membership in the Sphere of Chineseness" examines the way first-generation Chinese diaspora in Japan make sense of their relationships with the Chinese nation. With empirical evidence collected from both the in-depth interview with 69 informants and the media ethnographic observation with 26 research participants, this thesis contributes to conceptualize the diasporic experiences as well as the identity politics of the Chinese diaspora who live in a crucial era – while we have witnessed China's rise and its transition from a diminishing to a returning power, as a response to this Japan has continuously articulated a "China threat" discourse, which not only further promotes its ethno-nationalistic ideology, but also directing the ethnicity-based marginality toward the Chinese diaspora in Japan. In this context, this thesis contributes to present that while these events create complex Sino-Japanese power dynamics, the presence of digital media means that the Chinese diaspora in Japan are influenced by them in a new way – "new" in the sense that the digital mediation fills those power and forces into every dimension of their lives, making their daily reality a constant identity negotiation. The relevance of the study stems from the Chinese government’s focus on developing cultural, economic partnerships with Asia-Pacific states. It is the Huaqiao who have contributed to this process, for example, there are many investors who balance the flow of money between China and other countries, as well as scholars who share scientific knowledge with Chinese citizens.Aim. Based on the above, the aim of the study is to analyse the current position of the Chinese diaspora in the economic and political spheres of life in Southeast Asia.Tasks. In order to successfully realise the objective, it is necessary to solve the research tasks:to describe the essence of the concept of “diaspora” in the academic literature, as well as its specific features;to consider the role of huaqiao in the formation of China’s external image;to evaluate the degree of Chinese business activity in trade of the countries under consideration;4) to study the degree of Chinese diasporas’ participation in political life of the states of residence.Methods. Analysis and synthesis of literary sources (while studying the concept of “diaspora”), historical method (while describing three main waves of Chinese diaspora migration and studying Chinese settlement in different parts of South-East Asia), descriptive method (while studying the place of Chinese diaspora in political and economic life of South-East Asia) were used as main research methods.Results. The research results have been summarised according to the level of representation of the positive image of the Chinese as a result of the Huaqiao’s economic and political actions.Conclusions. Firstly, about 75% of overseas Chinese, or 28 million people, live in modern Southeast Asian countries.Secondly, within the framework of the business activities of the Chinese diaspora, the most significant factor of influence is the association of Chinese enterprises in the “bamboo network” and expansion of areas of cooperation with each other.Third, the Chinese diaspora has different rights these days depending on the form of government and state structure of the country.

Objective: Advance care planning (ACP) is increasingly recognized as a public health priority globally, with cultural aspects influencing people's knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours toward ACP. Despite being one of the largest diaspora groups, the Chinese community remains under-researched in this area. This study aims to examine the knowledge, attitudes, and health behaviours related to ACP among Chinese diaspora within a region in the United Kingdom., Method: A cross-sectional online survey based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour was conducted with 284 Chinese adults recruited from four social and voluntary organisations in the United Kingdom., Results: The study found low awareness (15%) and knowledge (mean score: 2.26 ± 1.78) of ACP, with less than 5% of the participants engaging with ACP. This contrasted with participants' attitudes (17.24 ± 2.57) and behavioural intention (14.93 ± 3.26) toward ACP, which were generally positive. Behavioural intention was the strongest predictor of engaging with ACP (OR 3.29, 95% CI: 1.35-8.02, p  = 0.01). Participants with previous end-of-life care experience had a better understanding of ACP; older age and higher knowledge of ACP were associated with more positive attitudes. Cultural beliefs associated with the level of family involvement, legal aspects, and the availability of information in one's first language was significant influences on engagement with ACP., Conclusions: Despite low awareness and engagement with ACP among the Chinese diaspora, positive attitudes and behavioural intention suggest potential for increased engagement. This could be achieved through culturally tailored interventions that address cultural influences and complexity surrounding legal requirements. The article is an analytical review of the monograph «Overseas Chinese Affairs Policy of the PRC: Socio-Economic Direction» by Alina Afonaseva. The Russian Sinologist gives a description of the world's largest Chinese diaspora, including the historical context, arranges the conceptual apparatus and analyzes the policy of the People's Republic of China in relation to the Chinese diaspora in socio-economic aspects. The author of the book tries to answer the question, how China managed to establish productive relations with its diaspora abroad and attract its resources for modernization and access to international markets. The review notes the significant contribution of A.V. Afonasyeva to the development of the scientific topic “China and overseas Chinese”, which provides an increase in knowledge for Chinese studies in general.

In this paper, I analyze the documentary Indelible (Chisuji , 2019), directed by Ryūichi Tsunoda (Seongwoo Kim). Depicting a "Zainichi" Korean Chinese in Japan, the documentary is a personal story of the journey of a man to find his father and, by extension, himself. Although it was produced with a focus on the family, particularly the father-son relationship, it also serves as a valuable historical account, illustrating structural realities in East Asia that continue to create diaspora. I elucidate the historical context of Korean Chinese in Japan and their migration and the difficulty of ascertaining the number of Korean Chinese living in Japan, discussing the connections between Korean diasporic histories across Korea, Japan, and China rooted in imperial occupation. I also explore, through intersectional perspectives, patriarchy, isolation of the elderly, female migration, and multilayered identification. I argue that the documentary serves as a prism through which the complexities of the Korean Chinese diaspora are revealed, not only deepening our understanding of the diaspora's historical trajectory and contemporary challenges but also illuminating the intersection and expansion of the identities of Korean Chinese in Japan. Studies on the Chinese diaspora often privilege male subjects as agents of mobility, the patriarch in kinship, social networks and livelihood, and producers of knowledge and thoughts, perpetuating an androcentric understanding of Chinese-ness and diaspora. This article challenges the dominant framework and highlights the uneven ways of being diaspora in Malaya and the different political, social, and psychological experiences between men and women and between women born overseas and locally. It traces the cultural production, thoughts, and networks of Chinese women in postwar Malaya by uncovering a short-lived socialist Chinese-language women's magazine titled New Women's Monthly, founded by Chinese feminist intellectual Shen Zijiu. The article argues that the fluidity of transnationalism mediated the communication of ideas in the new freedom in postwar Malaya, but nationalist movements could not accommodate it. It investigates the ways the editors and writers imagine a model New Women image through transnational sisterhood narratives and how they wove together the macropolitical discourse of nationalism and practical discussion of women's emancipation, solidarity, and mobilization. These imaginations showcased the complex interplay of the women's gendered intersubjectivities of the self, the family, the nation, and the world, through which women were empowered and constrained at the same time. In the end, Shen Zijiu's harsh criticism of "Miss Nanyang" indicated her nationalist expectations for Chinese Malayan women to serve both Malaya and China were impractical and resulted in the exclusion of sisterhood for the creation of a modern national identity. Economic, social and political factors are the main triggers of human migration, which aims to enable people to obtain better livelihoods. Chinese people are among the ethnic groups that have migrated and settled in Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia. The traditional Chinese dwelling known as a courtyard house or Siheyuan (四 合 院) is one of the cultural forms brought by Chinese migrants to this recipient region. This type of dwelling might require adjustments due to climatic conditions, materials, and the desire to be accepted by the local community. Therefore, what adaptations have been made by members of the Chinese diaspora living in Yogyakarta city? This research aims to explore the adaptation of the spatial arrangement of Chinese houses in Kampung Ketandan, which is a Chinese settlement that has existed for 200 years in Yogyakarta city and is associated with Javanese culture. This research uses a qualitative method to collect data concerning 6 original Chinese houses through observation and interviews. The analytical process involves spatial zone analysis and an access graph. As a result, the transformation and modification that characterise courtyards and spatial arrangements in Ketandan, Yogyakarta, are revealed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
