Abstract

Since the 20th century, Japan has experienced a period of very rapid urbanization. Cities have experienced substantial densification and expansion, resulting in gradually elevated flood risk. Urban flooding has also occurred in most large cities in Japan, particularly in Tokyo. In response to this growing problem, much effort and resources have been spent on research and development aimed at understanding, simulating, and managing urban flood risk in Japan. The objective of this review is to summarize, discuss, and share key outputs from some of the main research directions in this field, significant parts of which have been uniquely developed in Japan and only published in Japanese. After a general introduction to urban runoff modeling, in the next section, key historical works in Japan are summarized, followed by a description of the situation in Japan with respect to observations of precipitation and water level. Then, the storage function model approach is reviewed, including an extension to urban basins, as well as recent experiments with AI-based emulation in Japanese basins. Subsequently, we review the prospects of detailed hydrodynamic modeling involving high-resolution, vector-based Geographical Information System (GIS) data for the optimal description of the urban environment with applications in Tokyo. This paper tries to examine the impact of Ind AS on some accounting numbers and also to examine if there is any statistically significant difference among the prevailing opinions regarding Ind AS adoption in India. We took the top 45 companies from the Bombay Stock Exchange, according to their market capitalisation, and excluded banking, non-banking financial companies, and insurance companies due to non-availability of data, and made a questionnaire for opinion survey. We applied paired t-test on the secondary data and a chi-square test on the primary data. No statistically significant difference was found in the accounting numbers after the adoption of Ind AS. Results also revealed that there is homogeneity in the opinion of respondents with different work experiences and occupations regarding the impact of Ind AS on accounting numbers. In the TAT (time-axis transform) picture bandwidth compression system the pixels are selectively utilized. Because of its high reproducibility of the details of a picture, an application is expected to the bandwidth compression of HDTV (high-definition TV) and other pictures of high quality. In the one-dimensional (1-D) TAT system, the pixels are reduced and interpolated along the horizontal direction. This paper reports on the two-dimensional (2-D) TAT system which reduces and interpolates the pixels not only in the horizontal direction but also in the vertical direction. Using this system, a system for the color TV signal with 7-MHz bandwidth was constructed, which compresses the bandwidth to one-half in real-time. Compared with the 1-D system, the number of modes is reduced from 3 to 2, and the size of the block is increased from 8 to 16 pixels. Then the mode information is reduced to approximately one-third the 1-D system. On the other hand, a faithful picture is obtained with little degradation of resolution both in moving and still pictures. Sometimes a flicker is observed due to the time-variation of the mode in the reconstructed picture, which can he suppressed by the new mode decision scheme with a hysteresis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Today optimization algorithms are widely used in every application to increase quality, quantity and efficiency of making products as well as to minimize the production cost. Most of the techniques applied on different applications try to satisfy more than one parameter of interest in the design problem. In doing so, an objective function based on weighted aggregation has been designed to fulfill multi-objective optimization (MOO). A lot of computational time and energy is wasted in tuning the value of weighting factor in terms of number of trials each having hundreds of iterations to achieve the optimum solution. To reduce such tedious practice of adjustment of weighting factor with multiple iterations, Fuzzy technique is proposed for auto-tuning of weighting factor in this paper that will benefit the researchers who are working upon optimization of their designed objectives using artificial intelligence techniques. This paper proposes MOO settlement method that does not require complex mathematical equations in order to simplify the weight finding problem of weighted aggregation objective function (WAOF). The results have been compared in terms of time and space efficiency to show the importance of Fuzzy-WAOF (F-WAOF). Further the results taken on Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) system for set point tracking, load disturbance, controller effort and modelling errors, prove the superior performance of the proposed method as compared to state of the art techniques. Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of Research and Development (R&D) disclosures on earnings management practices. Design/methodology/approach: This study has been conducted by using a longitudinal archival data set of French companies belonging to the CAC All-Tradable index and instrumental variable estimations. Findings: The results of the research highlight the moderating effect of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) adoption and the financial crisis in this relationship. It also shows that R&D disclosures are negatively associated with earnings management. The findings also show that the IFRS adoption is complementary in its monitoring role of managerial behavior in reducing earnings management in the presence of R&D disclosures. Furthermore, this study finds that the negative effect of R&D disclosures on earnings management is more prevalent during the global financial crisis. Originality/value: This study examined the consequences of the voluntary disclosure of R&D information in the French context. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are self-renewing precursor cells that can differentiate into bone, fat, cartilage, and stromal cells of the bone marrow. Recent studies suggest that MSCs themselves are critical for forming a niche that maintains hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). The ease by which human MSC-like and stromal progenitor cells can be isolated from the bone marrow and other tissues has led to the rapid development of clinical investigations exploring their anti-inflammatory properties, tissue preservation capabilities, and regenerative potential. However, the identity of genuine MSCs and their specific contributions to these various beneficial effects have remained enigmatic. In this article, we examine the definition of MSCs and discuss the importance of rigorously characterizing their stem cell activity. We review their role and that of other putative niche constituents in the regulation of bone marrow HSCs. 12. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions of eclogites from the Dabie Mountains and geodynamic implications.

Abstract

Heterogeneous δ18O values as low as - 2.6‰ to+7.0% are observed for ultrahigh pressure eclogites from the Dabie Mountains in East China. Oxygen isotope equilibrium has been approached between the eclogite minerals, suggesting that the rocks would have acquired the unusual δ18O values prior to ultrahigh pressure metamorphism by interaction with18O-depleted fluid. δD values of hydroxyl-bearing are between — 51% and - 83‰, precluding the possibility of paleoseawater involvement. The only likely fluid is ancient meteoric water that exchanged oxygen isotopes with the eclogite precursor (a kind of basaltic rocks) formerly resident on the continental crust. This suggests a crustal recycling process in the suture zone of late subduction. Because silicate minerals undergo rapid oxygen isotope exchange at mantle pressures, preservation of the isotopic signature of meteoric water in the eclogites indicates limited crust-mantle interaction and thus a short residence time (<20 Ma) when the plate containing the eclogite precursor was subducted to mantle depths. The agreement in oxygen isotope temperatures for different mineral pairs suggests a rapid cooling and ascent process for the eclogites subsequent to their formation at mantle depths. To study the existence of the erythropoietin receptor (Epo-R) mRNA in brain capillary endothelial cells, the reverse transcription (RT) PCR was performed using total RNAs from rat brain capillary endothelial cells (RBECs) and MBEC4, which is one of the established mouse brain capillary endothelial cell lines. Southern analysis of the RT-PCR products indicated that both RBECs and MBEC4 expressed an authentic form of Epo-R mRNA as a minor form and an intron-5-inserted form of Epo-R mRNA, thus a soluble form of Epo-R mRNA, as a major form. Furthermore, the effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) on the DNA synthesis in RBECs was analyzed. rHuEpo showed a dose-dependent mitogenic action on RBECs as a competence factor. Radioiodinated rHuEpo was bound specifically to RBECs with time, cell number and dose dependencies. Binding studies with 125I-rHuEpo showed that RBECs had a single class of receptors with low-affinity (Kd = 860 pM) and that the number of sites/cell (10300) was abundant. These results suggest that brain capillary endothelial cells express not only an authentic form of Epo-R but also a soluble form of Epo-R and that erythropoietin acts directly on brain capillary endothelial cells as a competence factor. Abstract

A cDNA clone encoding a tissue-type transglutaminase (TGase) was isolated from a cDNA library prepared from the liver of red sea bream (Pagrus major). The cDNA sequence had an open reading frame coding for a protein of 695 amino acids and showed 43% identity to the sequence of guinea pig liver TGase, revealing a relatively low overall similarity. However, the 25-amino-acid sequence containing the putative active site (Cys272) of the enzyme was completely conserved between the two species, and was also identical to the corresponding regions of human and bovine endothelial cell TGases. In addition, the critical residues (His332 and Asp355) thought to form the catalytic-center triad together with Cys272, were found in the highly conserved region. The red sea bream TGase had an extension of 11 amino acids in the C-terminal region and some differences in the N-terminal region when compared with guinea pig TGase. From the cloned cDNA, a semi-synthetic TGase gene suitable for overexpression in Escherichia coli was constructed (pTTG2-22). At a reduced temperature (28 ° C), E. coli cells transformed with pTTG2-22 could produce soluble TGase which exhibited catalytic activity in the presence of calcium. E. coli extracts containing the recombinant red sea bream TGase induced gelation of actomyosin solutions, accompanied by a significant increase of ∊-(γ-glutamyl)lysine bonds, which are predominantly derived from the cross-linking of myosin heavy chains. These results indicate that this fish TGase should be useful for further analysis of TGase structure/function relationships and that it could also be employed to enhance the viscoelastic properties of proteinaceous materials. Abstract

Human bisphosphoglycerate mutase (GriP2 mutase) is a trifunctional enzyme which synthesizes and degrades GriP2 in red cells. Among the amino acid residues involved in its active site there are two conserved histidine residues, His10 which is phosphorylated during the catalytic process and His187 for which only speculative data have been made about the potential role during the reactions. Another amino acid residue, Arg89, had not been described as part of this active site but we have recently shown that a natural mutant Arg89→Cys was highly thermolabile and showed severe perturbations of its enzymatic properties. To understand better the exact role of these residues, replacements of His10 by Gly (H10G) or Asp (H10D), His187 by Asn (H187N), Tyr (H187Y) or Asp (H187D) and Arg89 by Cys (R89C), Ser (R89S), Gly (R89G) or Lys (R89K) were performed by site-directed mutagenesis. The results obtained in this report show that replacement of the His10 residue completely abolished the enzymatic activities. Concerning the His187 residue, our results afford arguments that it plays an essential role in the three catalytic activities. Indeed all these activities are abolished in the two H187Y and H187D variants, whereas they are detectable though strongly diminished, for the H187N variant. In addition mutations at His187 could be distinguishable from those at His10 since the former resulted in a thermolabile enzyme, whereas no significant change in heat stability was observed for the latter. It is noteworthy that the H187N variant is protected against thermal instability by glycerate 2,3-bisphosphate (GriP2). Concerning the Arg89 mutants, R89C, R89S and R89G, the three variants showed characteristics identical to those found in the natural R89C mutant, i.e. loss of 99% of synthase activity, consistent decrease of mutase and 2-phosphoglycolate-stimulated phosphatase activities whereas the unstimulated phosphatase activity was normal. n-Hexanal in soybean homogenates decreased during incubation at alkaline pH. When soybean extracts were dialyzed and then incubated with n-hexanal and cofactors [nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), the reduced form (NADH), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP+), and the reduced form (NADPH)], NADH and NADPH stimulated the enzymatic reduction of n-hexanal with NADH being more effective than NADPH. When undialyzed preparations were incubated, all the cofactors stimulated enzymatic activity, with NADH being the most effective. The reaction product in all the incubation mixtures was n-hexanol; n-hexanal was reduced to n-hexanol stoichiometrically. 1 This study deals with the Mamliik period in Iraqi history (1750- 1831), and more particularly with later Mamliik times (1802-1831). The year 1831 marks the watershed between an era of'local rule'and one of restored Turkish centralization. During the Mamliik period the influence of external powers in Iraq was not excessive; after that year direct Turkish rule coincided with growing British in­ fluence, which increasingly opened the country to the forces of the world market. As an object of study the period of local rule is inter­ esting, particularly because it formed the background to, and in some aspects also the start of, the modern history ofIraq. The literature available on Mamliik rule and tribal power is scarce and unsatisfying in various ways. The best history of'Ottoman'Iraq is still that of Longrigg, which was written in the 1920's. However, although based on an admirable range of sources, it provides the reader with little more than a political chronology. Generally, the social and political historian of early modern Iraq is confronted with a lack of information of a very basic kind - if indeed he can find any 2 relevant information. For example, there is hardly any information on the Mamliik institution. Only the most scanty evidence exists on the history of the Yanissaris of Baghdad, or on the socio-political history of the lower orders of the town. Again, almost nothing is known about the lower orders of the sedentary rural world.

Abstract

AUFSTIEG UND NIEDERGANG DER RÖMISCHEN WELT (ANRW) ist ein internationales Gemeinschaftswerk historischer Wissenschaften. Seine Aufgabe besteht darin, alle wichtigen Aspekte der antiken römischen Welt sowie ihres Fortwirkens und Nachlebens in Mittelalter und Neuzeit nach dem gegenwärtigen Stand der Forschung in Einzelbeiträgen zu behandeln. Das Werk ist in 3 Teile gegliedert:I. Von den Anfängen Roms bis zum Ausgang der RepublikII. PrincipatIII. SpätantikeJeder der drei Teile umfaßt sechs systematische Rubriken, zwischen denen es vielfache Überschneidungen gibt: 1. Politische Geschichte, 2. Recht, 3. Religion, 4. Sprache und Literatur, 5. Philosophie und Wissenschaften, 6. Künste. ANRW ist ein handbuchartiges Übersichtswerk zu den römischen Studien im weitesten Sinne, mit Einschluß der Rezeptions- und Wirkungsgeschichte bis in die Gegenwart. Bei den Beiträgen handelt es sich entweder um zusammenfassende Darstellungen mit Bibliographie oder um Problem- und Forschungsberichte bzw. thematisch breit angelegte exemplarische Untersuchungen. Die Artikel erscheinen in deutscher, englischer, französischer oder italienischer Sprache. Zum Mitarbeiterstab gehören rund 1000 Gelehrte aus 35 Ländern.
