Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are gaining significant interest in the field of biomedical functional nanomaterials because of their distinctive chemical and physical characteristics, particularly in drug delivery and magnetic hyperthermia applications. In this paper, we experimentally synthesized and characterized new Fe 3 O 4 -based NPs, functionalizing its surface with a 5-TAMRA cadaverine modified copolymer consisting of PMAO and PEG. Despite these advancements, many combinations of NP cores and coatings remain unexplored. To address this, we created a new data set of NP systems from public sources. Herein, 11 different AI/ML algorithms were used to develop the predictive AI/ML models. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and random forest (RF) models showed high values of sensitivity and specificity (>0.9) in training/validation series and 3-fold cross validation, respectively. The AI/ML models are able to predict 14 output properties (CC 50 (μM), EC 50 (μM), inhibition (%), etc .) for all combinations of 54 different NP cores classes vs. 25 different coats and vs. 41 different cell lines, allowing the short listing of the best results for experimental assays. The results of this work may help to reduce the cost of traditional trial and error procedures.

The innovative fusion of essential oils with hydrogel engineering offers an optimistic perspective for the design and development of next-generation materials incorporating natural bioactive compounds. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advances in the use of hydrogels containing essential oils for biomedical, dental, cosmetic, food, food packaging, and restoration of cultural heritage applications. Polymeric sources, methods of obtaining, cross-linking techniques, and functional properties of hydrogels are discussed. The unique characteristics of polymer hydrogels containing bioactive agents are highlighted. These include biocompatibility, nontoxicity, effective antibacterial activity, control of the sustained and prolonged release of active substances, optimal porosity, and outstanding cytocompatibility. Additionally, the specific characteristics and distinctive properties of essential oils are explored, along with their extraction and encapsulation methods. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are also discussed. We have considered limitations due to volatility, solubility, environmental factors, and stability. The importance of loading essential oils in hydrogels, their stability, and biological activity is analyzed. This review highlights through an in-depth analysis, the recent innovations, challenges, and future prospects of hydrogels encapsulated with essential oils and their potential for multiple applications including biomedicine, dentistry, cosmetics, food, food packaging, and cultural heritage conservation.

Regenerative hydrogels from natural polymers have come forth as auspicious materials for use in regenerative medicine, with interest attributed to their intrinsic biodegradability, biocompatibility, and ability to reassemble the extracellular matrix. This review covers the latest advances in regenerative hydrogels used for wound healing, focusing on their chemical composition, cross-linking mechanisms, and functional properties. Key carbohydrate polymers, including alginate, chitosan, hyaluronic acid, and polysaccharide gums, including agarose, carrageenan, and xanthan gum, are discussed in terms of their sources, chemical structures and specific properties suitable for regenerative applications. The review further explores the categorization of hydrogels based on ionic charge, response to physiological stimuli (i.e., pH, temperature) and particularized roles in wound tissue self-healing. Various methods of cross-linking used to enhance the mechanical and biological performance of these hydrogels are also examined. By highlighting recent innovations and ongoing challenges, this article intends to give a detailed understanding of natural hydrogels and their potential to revolutionize regenerative medicine and improve patient healing outcomes.

Chitosan-based hydrogels have gained significant attention for their potential applications in water treatment and purification due to their remarkable properties such as bioavailability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, environmental friendliness, high pollutants adsorption capacity, and water adsorption capacity. This article comprehensively reviews recent advances in chitosan-based hydrogel materials for water purification applications. The synthesis methods, structural properties, and water purification performance of chitosan-based hydrogels are critically analyzed. The incorporation of various nanomaterials into chitosan-based hydrogels, such as nanoparticles, graphene, and metal-organic frameworks, has been explored to enhance their performance. The mechanisms of water purification, including adsorption, filtration, and antimicrobial activity, are also discussed in detail. The potential of chitosan-based hydrogels for the removal of pollutants, such as heavy metals, organic contaminants, and microorganisms, from water sources is highlighted. Moreover, the challenges and future perspectives of chitosan-based hydrogels in water treatment and water purification applications are also illustrated. Overall, this article provides valuable insights into the current state of the art regarding chitosan-based hydrogels for water purification applications and highlights their potential for addressing global water pollution challenges.

Aloe vera -based hydrogels have emerged as promising platforms for the delivery of therapeutic agents in wound dressings due to their biocompatibility and unique wound-healing properties. The present study provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the application of Aloe vera -based hydrogels for wound healing. The synthesis methods, structural characteristics, and properties of Aloe vera -based hydrogels are discussed. Mechanisms of therapeutic agents released from Aloe vera -based hydrogels, including diffusion, swelling, and degradation, are also analyzed. In addition, the therapeutic effects of Aloe vera -based hydrogels on wound healing, as well as the reduction of inflammation, antimicrobial activity, and tissue regeneration, are highlighted. The incorporation of various therapeutic agents, such as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory ones, into Aloe vera -based hydrogels is reviewed in detail. Furthermore, challenges and future prospects of Aloe vera -based hydrogels for wound dressing applications are considered. This review provides valuable information on the current status of Aloe vera -based hydrogels for the delivery of therapeutic agents in wound dressings and highlights their potential to improve wound healing outcomes.

Introduction: Implantable loop recorders (ILR) are used to screen for atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with cryptogenic stroke (CS). However, there is limited real-world data regarding the long-term rate of AF detection using ILR and management consequences in patients with CS. The objective is to assess the rate of AF detection in patients with CS in a real-world study over 36 months of follow-up and its consequences on stroke prevention., Methods: This retrospective study included patients with an ILR placed for CS at Baylor College of Medicine and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center between January 2014 and July 2021. The primary outcome was AF detection in patients with ILR. The secondary outcome was the rate of subsequent strokes after ILR placement in patients with or without diagnosed AF. The AF detection rate in our cohort was compared to the rate in CRYSTAL-AF Trial at 36-month follow-up. The impact of AF detection on clinical management was examined., Results: We identified 225 patients. 51.1% were women and 38.2% African American. Among 85 patients with ILR labeled AF, 43 patients had true AF, and 42 had incorrectly labeled AF (48.3% false positive). The estimated AF detection rate at 36 months follow-up was 28.6% (95% CI, 26.6%-30.6%). 58.1% of patients with AF were initiated on oral anticoagulation, 80.0% of whom were started on a direct oral anticoagulant. 13.8% of patients had recurrent strokes after ILR implantation; 4 of whom were diagnosed with AF., Conclusion: Compared to CRYSTAL-AF, the AF detection rate in our cohort is similar, but this cohort includes a higher proportion of female and African American patients. The removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater has gained considerable attention in recent years, particularly in the advancements of hydrogel-based adsorbents as a green solution for their ease of use, ease of modification, biodegradability, non-toxicity, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. This study focuses on the design of an efficient adsorbent hydrogel based on 1% chitosan, 40% polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG4000), and 4% xanthan gum (referred to as CPX) for the removal of diclofenac sodium (DCF) from water. The interaction between positively charged chitosan and negatively charged xanthan gum and PEG4000 leads to strengthening of the hydrogel structure. The obtained CPX hydrogel, prepared by a green, simple, easy, low-cost, and ecological method, has a higher viscosity due to the three-dimensional polymer network and mechanical stability. The physical, chemical, rheological, and pharmacotechnical parameters of the synthesized hydrogel were determined. Swelling analysis demonstrated that the new synthetized hydrogel is not pH-dependent. The obtained adsorbent hydrogel reached the adsorption capacity (172.41 mg/g) at the highest adsorbent amount (200 mg) after 350 min. In addition, the adsorption kinetics were calculated using a pseudo first-order model and Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm parameters. The results demonstrate that CPX hydrogel can be used as an efficient option to remove DCF as a pharmaceutical contaminant from wastewater.

Detection of greenhouse gases is essential because harmful gases in the air diffuse rapidly over large areas in a short period of time, causing air pollution that will induce climate change with catastrophic consequences over time. Among the materials with favorable morphologies for gas detection (nanofibers, nanorods, nanosheets), large specific surfaces, high sensitivity and low production costs, we chose nanostructured porous films of In 2 O 3 obtained by the sol-gel method, deposited on alumina transducers, with gold (Au) interdigitated electrodes (IDE) and platinum (Pt) heating circuits. Sensitive films contained 10 deposited layers, involving intermediate and final thermal treatments to stabilize the sensitive film. The fabricated sensor was characterized using AFM, SEM, EDX and XRD. The film morphology is complex, containing fibrillar formations and some quasi-spherical conglomerates. The deposited sensitive films are rough, thus favoring gas adsorption. Ozone sensing tests were performed at different temperatures. The highest response of the ozone sensor was recorded at room temperature, considered to be the working temperature for this specific sensor.

Aims: The aim of our study was to assess differences in post-ablation atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence and burden and to quantify the change in LVEF across different congestive heart failure (CHF) subcategories of the DECAAF-II population., Methods and Results: Differences in the primary outcome of AF recurrence between CHF and non-CHF groups was calculated. The same analysis was performed for the three subgroups of CHF and the non-CHF group. Differences in AF burden after the 3-month blanking period between CHF and non-CHF groups was calculated. Improvement in LVEF was calculated and compared across the three CHF groups. Improvement was also calculated across different fibrosis stages. There was no significant differences in AF recurrence and AF burden after catheter ablation between CHF and non-CHF patients and between different CHF subcategories. Patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) experienced the greatest improvement in EF following catheter ablation (CA, 16.66% ± 11.98, P < 0.001) compared to heart failure with moderately reduced LVEF, and heart failure with preserved EF (10.74% ± 8.34 and 2.00 ± 8.34 respectively, P-value < 0.001). Moreover, improvement in LVEF was independent of the four stages of atrial fibrosis (7.71 vs. 9.53 vs. 5.72 vs. 15.88, from Stage I to Stage IV respectively, P = 0.115)., Conclusion: Atrial fibrillation burden and recurrence after CA is similar between non-CHF and CHF patients, independent of the type of CHF. Of all CHF groups, those with HFrEF had the largest improvement in LVEF after CA. The present research focuses on the physicochemical and pharmacotechnical properties of new hydrogels obtained using allantoin, xanthan gum, salicylic acid and different concentrations of Aloe vera (5, 10, 20% w / v in solution; 38, 56, 71 wt% in dry gels). The thermal behavior of Aloe vera composite hydrogels was studied using DSC and TG/DTG analyses. The chemical structure was investigated using different characterization methods (XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopies) and the morphology of the hydrogels was studied SEM and AFM microscopy. Pharmacotechnical evaluation on tensile strength and elongation, moisture content, swelling and spreadability was also completed. Physical evaluation confirmed that the appearance of the prepared Aloe vera based hydrogels was homogeneous and the color varied from pale beige to deep opaque beige with increasing Aloe vera concentration. All other evaluation parameters, e.g., pH, viscosity, spreadability and consistency were found to be adequate in all hydrogel formulations. SEM and AFM images show that the structure of the hydrogels condensed into homogeneous polymeric solids with the addition of Aloe vera , in accordance with the decrease in peak intensities observed via XRD analysis. These results suggest interactions between the hydrogel matrix and Aloe vera as observed via FTIR and TG/DTG and DSC analyses. Considering that Aloe vera content higher than 10% ( w / v ) did not stimulate further interactions, this formulation (FA-10) can be used for further biomedical applications.

Polymer gels are a valuable class of polymeric materials that have recently attracted significant interest due to the exceptional properties such as versatility, soft-structure, flexibility and stimuli-responsive, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Based on their properties, polymer gels can be used in a wide range of applications: food industry, agriculture, biomedical, and biosensors. The utilization of polymer gels in different medical and industrial applications requires a better understanding of the formation process, the factors which affect the gel's stability, and the structure-rheological properties relationship. The present review aims to give an overview of the polymer gels, the classification of polymer gels' materials to highlight their important features, and the recent development in biomedical applications. Several perspectives on future advancement of polymer hydrogel are offered.

The present research aims to describe a new methodology to obtain biocompatible hydrogels based on Aloe vera used for wound healing applications. The properties of two hydrogels (differing in Aloe vera concentration, AV5 and AV10) prepared by an all-green synthesis method from raw, natural, renewable and bioavailable materials such as salicylic acid, allantoin and xanthan gum were investigated. The morphology of the Aloe vera based hydrogel biomaterials was studied by SEM analysis. The rheological properties of the hydrogels, as well as their cell viability, biocompatibility and cytotoxicity, were determined. The antibacterial activity of Aloe vera based hydrogels was evaluated both on Gram-positive, Staphylococcus aureus and on Gram-negative, Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. The obtained novel green Aloe vera based hydrogels showed good antibacterial properties. In vitro scratch assay demonstrated the capacity of both AV5 and AV10 hydrogels to accelerate cell proliferation and migration and induce closure of a wounded area. A corroboration of all morphological, rheological, cytocompatibility and cell viability results indicates that this Aloe vera based hydrogel may be suitable for wound healing applications.

A facile, green synthesis methodology to obtain zinc oxide nanoparticles using three polysaccharide gums (Acacia gum, Guar gum and Xanthan gum) of biological origin was developed. Subsequently, biosynthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles were incorporated into a sustainable chitosan hydrogel matrix functionalized with propolis extract. This study has revealed that the selected polysaccharides as chelates represents a suitable approach to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles of particular interest with controlled morphology. The formation of ZnO nanoparticles using polysaccharide gums was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, UV-Vis spectroscopy, thermal analysis, SEM, Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The rheological behaviour of obtained hydrogels was evaluated. The AFM studies demonstrate that all synthesized chitosan incorporated ZnO composites hydrogels functionalized with propolis extract exhibit corrugated topographies. The present study highlights the possible incorporation of various guest molecules into hydrogel matrix due to its tuneable morphologies. The obtained hydrogel composites were cytocompatible in L929 fibroblast cell culture, in a range of concentrations between 50 and 1000 μg/mL, as assessed by MTT, LDH and Live/Dead double staining assays. By enhancing the biological properties, these novel green hydrogels show attractive superior performance in a wide concentration range to develop future in vivo suitable natural platforms as effective delivery systems of pharmacologic agents for biomedical applications., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Background: Chronic lesion formation after cardiac tissue ablation is an important indicator for procedural outcome. Moreover, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the features that predict chronic lesion formation., Objective: The aim of this study is to determine whether acute lesion visualization using late gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (LGE-MRI) can reliably predict chronic lesion size., Methods: Focal lesions were created in left and right ventricles of canine models using either radiofrequency (RF) ablation or cryofocal ablation. Multiple ablation parameters were used. The first LGE-MRI was acquired within 1-5 h post-ablation and the second LGE-MRI was obtained 47-82 days later. Corview software was used to perform lesion segmentations and size calculations., Results: Fifty-Five lesions were created in different locations in the ventricles. Chronic volume size decreased by a mean of 62.5 % (95% CI 58.83-67.97, p < 0.0005). Similar regression of lesion volume was observed regardless of ablation location ( p = 0.32), ablation technique ( p = 0.94), duration ( p = 0.37), power ( p = 0.55) and whether lesions were connected or not ( p = 0.35). There was no significant difference in lesion volume reduction assessed at 47-54 days and 72-82 days after ablation ( p = 0.31). Recently the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere have increased dramatically with rapid development of urbanization and industry. This led to a large decline in air quality around the world, which resulted in a heavy impact on human health. Therefore, new/cheap detection devices for VOCs are of high interest. Formaldehyde (FA) is a very toxic VOC, which damages the respiratory system even in the smallest doses and short exposure time. Zinc oxide (ZnO)/nickel oxide (NiO) heterostructures were synthesized using an economical route: firstly, NiO was prepared by liquid exfoliation technique and deposited by dip-coating on alumina ceramic transducers with two interdigital gold (Au) electrodes, followed by low-temperature hydrothermal growth of ZnO. The as-prepared sensors were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDAX), and X-Ray fluorescence (XRF). The response/recovery of ZnO/NiO heterostructure-based microsensors for formaldehyde was investigated at room temperature, in agreement with modern sensing requirements. Recent advances in the development of strategies for chemical adaptation of biomacromolecules, such as polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids, have allowed for the design of functional hydrogels suitable for the current requirements in the biomedical and health care fields. Hydrogels are three-dimensional hydrophilic materials that have the ability to absorb and retain a large volume of water and are produced using a lower fraction of precursor macromolecules. They can be made from both natural and synthetic materials and can have different degrees of stiffness and elasticity, depending on the projected application. Hydrogels are biocompatible, and therefore can be safely used in various applications, including contact lenses, dressings, medical devices, and tissue engineering scaffolds. Also, they are effective targeted delivery systems for various drugs such as antibiotics, analgesics, and chemotherapeutics. Due to the protection effect with regards to high temperatures, acidic environments and enzymatic degradation which affect a wide range of unstable macromolecules, including peptides and proteins, the hydrogels can be considered as promising delivery vehicles. Hydrogels can be designed as adaptable natural extracellular matrices, with different degrees of rigidity and porosity. They can be functionalized with a wide variety of bioactive molecules, such as growth factors, proteins, and peptides, and they are very useful in tissue engineering applications, including cartilage and bone regeneration, neural tissue engineering, and wound healing. As anti-aging therapy systems, they can be combined with plant extracts or can include a multitude of bioactive compounds, such as collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, or probiotics. The versatility and unique properties of bio-hydrogels are challenging and determine their study and application in many fields, such as health care and anti-aging solutions. The aim of this research is to provide an insight regarding the current status of polysaccharide-based hydrogels for applications in the biomedical domain. The distinctiveness and genus allocation of 'Parachleuastochoerus' valentini (Suidae: Tetraconodontinae), from the Miocene of Europe, has been controversial, being alternatively considered a junior synonym of Conohyus simorrensis. Recently described material from the Vallès-Penedès Basin (NE Iberian Peninsula) supported its distinct species status but did not discount an alternative ascription to Conohyus, largely because the lower male canine remained unknown. Here we describe all the tetraconodontine dentognathic material from the earliest Late Miocene sites of Trinxera del Ferrocarril–Sant Quirze (~11.6–11.2 Ma, MN7+8), as well as Can Feliu 2 and Poble Nou de Sant Quirze (≤11.2 Ma, MN9), comprising 134 specimens. The former locality played an important role in the resurrection of 'Pa.' valentini but ~70% of the available material remained unpublished. Based on metrical and qualitative comparisons with published material of this species and similarly sized tetraconodontines from Europe, we attribute the whole studied sample to 'Pa.' valentini. Previous reports of Parachleuastochoerus huenermanni from the site are erroneous (owing to specimen mislabeling). Our results reinforce the distinctiveness of 'Pa.' valentini, while its lower male canine morphology (first described herein) does not support its transfer to Conohyus. However, a cladistic analysis favors closer phylogenetic relationships with Retroporcus matritensis (a potential junior synonym of C. simorrensis) and even Versoporcus steinheimensis than with Parachleuastochoerus crusafonti (the type species of the genus). Our results thus indicate that Parachleuastochoerus, as currently conceived, is polyphyletic, although pending an in-depth revision of other European tetraconodontines we refrain from providing a new combination for 'Pa.' valentini. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a cornerstone in the treatment of dyssynchronous heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. However, the phenomenon of non-response has plagued CRT since its initial application. Notwithstanding issues such as failure to capture the left ventricle, lower-than-required pacing delivery percent, and failure to optimize atrioventricular and interventricular delays, there are patients who fail to exhibit an adequate response to CRT in its classical biventricular pacing (BiVP) form. Several modalities have been proposed as a means to remedy this issue, including pacing the conduction system itself—His or left bundle branch pacing, allowing for intrinsic conduction in some myocardial segments, pacing the left ventricle from multiple points in the coronary sinus (multipoint pacing), or even combining the above (e.g., His/left bundle pacing and BiVP leading to His/left bundle-optimized CRT). In the present review, we present recent evidence for the advantages and disadvantages of each modality and attempt to formulate a pathophysiology and simulation-based strategy to determine the best way forward for delivering CRT in non-responders to BiVP. Vaginal hydrogels are a modern alternative to solid (tablets, globules) and other semi-solid forms of medication (ointments, creams) in the control of pathogenic microorganisms in diseases of the female reproductive tract. This review aims to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the efficacy of hydrogels containing plant materials in the treatment of vaginal and vulvar infections. New therapies are essential to address the growing antimicrobial resistance crisis. Google Scholar, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Medline (PubMed) databases were searched. Twenty-five studies were included in the review, including basic, pre-clinical, and clinical studies. The results obtained confirmed the therapeutic potential of plant raw materials embedded in the polymer matrix of hydrogels. Hydrogels have garnered considerable interest in water purification owing to their distinctive physicochemical characteristics, including high porosity, modifiable surface chemistry, and superior water retention capacity. This paper provides a thorough examination of the use of hydrogels in wastewater treatment. It encompasses their categorization and separation procedures, including size exclusion, adsorption, electrostatic interactions, and non-sieving processes. Furthermore, it examines how functional groups improve the efficiency of pollutant removal. The review examines hydrogel composites and their filtering processes, measuring their efficacy in adsorption and evaluating the benefits and limits of hydrogels, especially regarding regeneration capacities. It explores hydration processes in hydrogels, emphasizing the fundamental mechanisms and measuring methods involved. Future research must prioritize optimizing hydrogel design to enhance mechanical strength and reusability, investigate innovative functionalization techniques to address emergent contaminants, and establish scalable manufacturing methods for extensive industrial use. Chronic wounds pose a substantial healthcare concern due to their prevalence and cost burden. This paper presents a detailed overview of chronic wounds and emphasizes the critical need for novel therapeutic solutions. The pathophysiology of wound healing is discussed, including the healing stages and the factors contributing to chronicity. The focus is on diverse types of chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot necrosis, pressure ulcers, and venous leg ulcers, highlighting their etiology, consequences, and the therapeutic issues they provide. Further, modern wound care solutions, particularly hydrogels, are highlighted for tackling the challenges of chronic wound management. Hydrogels are characterized as multipurpose materials that possess vital characteristics like the capacity to retain moisture, biocompatibility, and the incorporation of active drugs. Hydrogels' effectiveness in therapeutic applications is demonstrated by how they support healing, including preserving ideal moisture levels, promoting cellular migration, and possessing antibacterial properties. Thus, this paper presents hydrogel technology's latest developments, emphasizing drug-loaded and stimuli-responsive types and underscoring how these advanced formulations greatly improve therapy outcomes by enabling dynamic and focused reactions to the wound environment. Future directions for hydrogel research promote the development of customized hydrogel treatments and the incorporation of digital health tools to improve the treatment of chronic wounds. Local anesthetics (LAs) have been indispensable in clinical pain management, yet their limitations, such as short duration of action and systemic toxicity, necessitate improved delivery strategies. Hydrogels, with their biocompatibility, tunable properties, and ability to modulate drug release, have been extensively explored as platforms for enhancing LA efficacy and safety. This narrative review explores the historical development of LAs, their physicochemical properties, and clinical applications, providing a foundation for understanding the integration of hydrogels in anesthetic delivery. Advances in thermoresponsive, stimuli-responsive, and multifunctional hydrogels have demonstrated significant potential in prolonging analgesia and reducing systemic exposure in preclinical studies, while early clinical findings highlight the feasibility of thermoresponsive hydrogel formulations. Despite these advancements, challenges such as burst release, mechanical instability, and regulatory considerations remain critical barriers to clinical translation. Emerging innovations, including nanocomposite hydrogels, biofunctionalized matrices, and smart materials, offer potential solutions to these limitations. Future research should focus on optimizing hydrogel formulations, expanding clinical validation, and integrating advanced fabrication technologies such as 3D printing and artificial intelligence-driven design to enhance personalized pain management. The orderly regulation of immune inflammation and promotion of the regeneration of skin vessels and fibers are key to the treatment of diabetic skin injury (DSI). Although various traditional polypeptide biological dressings continue to be developed, their efficacy is not satisfactory. In recent years, plant-to-mammal regulation has provided an effective approach for chronic wound management, but the development of effective plant-based treatments remains challenging. The development of exosomes from Chinese herbs is promising for wound healing. In this study, plant exosomes derived from lemons (Citrus limon) were extracted, and their biological efficacy was verified. Lemon exosomes regulated the polarization reprogramming of macrophages, promoted the proliferation and migration of vascular endothelial cells and fibroblasts, and thus promoted the healing of diabetic wounds. To solve the problems of continuous drug delivery and penetration depth, Lemon Exosomes were loaded into a hydrogel constructed of Gelatin Methacryloyl (GelMA) and Dialdehyde Starch (DAS) that closely fits to the skin, absorbs water, swells, and is moist and breathable, effectively promoting the sustained and slow release of exosomes and resulting in excellent performance for diabetic wound healing. Hydrogel, a polymer material with a three-dimensional structure, has considerably expanded in research across multiple fields lately. However, the lack of a comprehensive review integrating the research status of hydrogel across diverse fields has hindered the development of hydrogel. This bibliometric analysis reviewed the hydrogel-related research over the past decades, emphasizing the evolution, status, and future directions within a multitude of fields, such as materials science, chemistry, polymer science, engineering, physics, biochemistry molecular biology, pharmacology pharmacy, cell biology, biotechnology applied microbiology, etc. We encapsulated applications and the potential of hydrogel in wound healing, drug delivery, cell encapsulation, bioprinting, tissue engineering, electronic products, environment applications, and disease treatment. Excessive residues of nitrite can pose a serious threat to human health, making the establishment of an efficient and effective electrochemical sensor for nitrite detection highly necessary. Herein, we report on a sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers, with FeCoNiCuAl high-entropy alloy (HEAs) nanoparticles in situ grown on the carbon fibers through a confinement effect. The FeCoNiCuAl/CNF sensor is capable of electrochemically detecting nitrite using both differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and amperometric (I–t) methods. The DPV detection offers a linear range of 0.1–5000 μM and 5000–18 000 μM, with sensitivities of 150.6 μA mM−1 cm−2 and 80.1 μA mM−1 cm−2 and a detection limit of 0.023 μM (S/N = 3). The I–t detection covers a range of 1–10 000 μM, with a sensitivity of 337.84 μA mM−1 cm−2 and a detection limit of 0.12 μM. Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) are a significant complication in diabetes mellitus, leading to increased morbidity, hospitalizations, and healthcare burdens. The growing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens has reduced the efficacy of conventional treatments, highlighting the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. Natural products, known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties, have garnered attention as potential treatments for DFIs. This review examines key natural compounds, including eugenol, thymol, carvacrol, curcumin, and Aloe vera, and their mechanisms of action in combating diabetic infections. We analyze the antimicrobial efficacy of these compounds, their ability to inhibit biofilm formation, and their role in wound healing. The review also explores challenges in integrating natural products into clinical practice and the potential for their use alongside or in place of traditional antibiotic therapies. Our findings suggest that natural products could play a crucial role in developing sustainable and effective treatment strategies for DFIs, especially in the face of rising antimicrobial resistance. Chronic wounds present a substantial healthcare obstacle, marked by an extended healing period that can persist for weeks, months, or even years. Typically, they do not progress through the usual phases of healing, which include hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling, within the expected timeframe. Therefore, to address the socioeconomic burden in taking care of chronic wounds, hydrogel-based therapeutic materials have been proposed. Hydrogels are hydrophilic polymer networks with a 3D structure which allows them to become skin substitutes for chronic wounds. Knowing that peptides are abundant in the human body and possess distinct biological functionality, activity, and selectivity, their adaptability as peptide-based hydrogels to individual therapeutic requirements has made them a significant potential biomaterial for the treatment of chronic wounds. Peptide-based hydrogels possess excellent physicochemical and mechanical characteristics such as biodegradability and swelling, and suitable rheological properties as well great biocompatibility. Moreover, they interact with cells, promoting adhesion, migration, and proliferation. Biosensors, which combine physical transducers with biorecognition elements, have seen significant advancement due to the heightened interest in rapid diagnostic technologies across a number of fields, including medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety. In particular, polydiacetylene (PDA) is gaining attention as an ideal material for label-free colorimetric biosensor development due to its unique color-changing properties in response to external stimuli. PDA forms through the self-assembly of diacetylene monomers, with color change occurring as its conjugated backbone twists in response to stimuli such as temperature, pH, and chemical interactions. This color change enables the detection of biomarkers, metal ions, and toxic compounds. Moreover, the combination of PDA with polymeric structures including hydrogels further enhances the sensitivity and structural stability of PDA-based biosensors, making them reliable and effective in complex biological and environmental conditions. This review comprehensively examines recent research trends and applications of PDA–polymeric structure hybrid biosensors, while discussing future directions and potential advancements in this field. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a prevalent neuropathic disorder caused by chronic compression of the median nerve, leading to sensory and motor impairments. Conventional treatments, such as corticosteroid injections, wrist splinting, and surgical decompression, often fail to provide adequate outcomes for chronic or recurrent cases, emphasizing the need for innovative therapies. Hydrogels, highly biocompatible three-dimensional biomaterials with customizable properties, hold significant potential for CTS management. Their ability to mimic the extracellular matrix facilitates localized drug delivery, anti-adhesion barrier formation, and tissue regeneration. Advances in hydrogel engineering have introduced stimuli-responsive systems tailored to the biomechanical environment of the carpal tunnel, enabling sustained therapeutic release and improved tissue integration. Despite these promising developments, hydrogel applications for CTS remain underexplored. Key challenges include the absence of CTS-specific preclinical models and the need for rigorous clinical validation. This study reported the body mass (BM) estimates of the Middle Miocene fossil hominoid Nacholapithecus kerioi from Africa. The average BM estimates from all forelimb and hindlimb skeletal elements was 22.7 kg, which is slightly higher than the previously reported estimate of ~22 kg. This study revealed that Nacholapithecus has a unique body proportion with an enlarged forelimb relative to a smaller hindlimb, suggesting an antipronograde posture/locomotion, which may be related to the long clavicle, robust ribs, and some hominoid-like vertebral morphology. Because the BM of Nacholapithecus in this study was estimated to be below 30 kg, Nacholapithecus probably did not have relatively shorter and robust femora, which may result from other mechanical constraints, as seen in extant African hominoids. The BM estimate of Nacholapithecus suggests that full substantial modifications of the trunk and forelimb anatomy for risk avoidance and foraging efficiency, as seen in extant great apes, would not be expected in Nacholapithecus. Because larger monkeys are less arboreal (e.g., Mandrillus sphinx or Papio spp.), and the maximum BM among extant constant arboreal cercopithecoids is ~24 kg (male Nasalis larvatus), Nacholapithecus would be a constant arboreal primate. Induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived biological pacemakers have emerged as an alternative to traditional electronic pacemakers for managing cardiac arrhythmias. While effective, electronic pacemakers face challenges such as device failure, lead complications, and surgical risks, particularly in children. iPSC-derived pacemakers offer a promising solution by mimicking the sinoatrial node's natural pacemaking function, providing a more physiological approach to rhythm control. These cells can differentiate into cardiomyocytes capable of autonomous electrical activity, integrating into heart tissue. However, challenges such as achieving cellular maturity, long-term functionality, and immune response remain significant barriers to clinical translation. Future research should focus on refining gene-editing techniques, optimizing differentiation, and developing scalable production processes to enhance the safety and effectiveness of these biological pacemakers. With further advancements, iPSC-derived pacemakers could offer a patient-specific, durable alternative for cardiac rhythm management. Heavy metals including cadmium (Cd) are one of the major persistent and non-biodegradable wastewater pollutants. However, Cd reaches the aquatic ecosystem via industrial and agricultural waste discharges and causes serious deterioration in the welfare status of aquatic animals. The use of feed supplements with immune-stimulants to mitigate the toxic influences of heavy metals including Cd is a much more intriguing point. Thus, the current experiment used the bio-synthetized chitosan nanoparticles derived from Bacillus subtilis (Bs-CNPs) as a feed supplement and evaluated its ameliorative impacts on the growth and welfare status of Cd-intoxicated Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Bifactorial design (3 Bs-CNPs levels × 3 Cd levels) was used in the current study where Nile tilapia fingerlings (58–63 g) were fed on 0.0, 2, and 4 g Bs-CNPs/kg feed alongside with exposing to 0.0, 0.392, and 0.784 mg Cd/L for 60 days to represent nine treatments as follows: T1: control group (no Cd exposure; no Bs-CNPs supplement); T2 and T3: fish were intoxicated with 0.784 and 0.392 mg Cd/L, respectively; T4 and T5: fish fed on 2 and 4 g Bs-CNPs/kg feed, respectively; T6 and T7: fish were fed on 2 g Bs-CNPs/kg feed along with exposure to 0.784 and 0.392 mg Cd/L, respectively; and T8 and T9: fish were fed on 4 g Bs-CNPs/kg feed along with exposure to 0.784 and 0.392 mg Cd/L, respectively. It is noted that the Cd-intoxicated fish exhibited significant retardation in growth performance and digestive enzyme activities with a decline in their survival rate compared to the control group (T1). The results also revealed that exposing fish to Cd toxicity alone with no feed supplement (T2 and T3) experienced abnormal clinical signs and behavioral changes. Compared with the control group (no Cd with no Bs-CNPs), highest values of cortisol, glucose, aspartate and alanine aminotransferase, and acetylcholine esterase activity were found in fish fed on the control diet along with exposure to 0.784 mg Cd/L. Higher Cd restudies in liver, intestine, gills, kidney, and muscles tissues were detected in fish exposed to 0.784 mg Cd/L alone and the sequence order of Cd levels in different fish organs is intestine > gills > liver > kidney > muscles. Remarkable pathological alterations in hepatic and intestinal tissues were also observed. On the other hand, feeding Nile tilapia on Bs-CNPs-enriched diets alone with no Cd exposure enhanced their growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, and hematological parameters with no Cd residues in fish organs. Interestingly, feeding the Cd-intoxicated fish on diets with Bs-CNPs (4 g/kg feed) returned their growth, digestive enzymes, hematological, and biochemical parameters to approximate those of the control group. Furthermore, these treatments showed histopathological alteration recovery in the intestine and liver tissues is similar to those in the control group (no Cd with no Bs-CNPs). Fish fed on Bs-CNPs levels with no Cd exposure showed no Cd residues in different fish organs. The Cd levels in different organs of fish exposed to 0.392 mg Cd/L along with feeding on Bs-CNPs (4 g/kg feed) were lower than those in Cd-exposed fish treatments. Consequently, the current study evoked that feeding Nile tilapia fingerlings on Bs-CNPs (4 g/kg feed) could enhance their growth performance and protect the fish from the Cd toxicity that may occur in the aquatic ecosystem. Chronic pruritus, or persistent itching, is a debilitating condition that severely impacts quality of life, especially in palliative care settings. Traditional treatments often fail to provide adequate relief or are associated with significant side effects, prompting interest in alternative therapies. This review investigates the antipruritic potential of eight medicinal plants: chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis), calendula (Calendula officinalis), curcumin (Curcuma longa), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), peppermint (Mentha piperita), and evening primrose (Oenothera biennis). These plants are analyzed for their traditional applications, active bioactive compounds, mechanisms of action, clinical evidence, usage, dosage, and safety profiles. Comprehensive searches were conducted in databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and b-on, focusing on in vitro, animal, and clinical studies using keywords like "plant", "extract", and "pruritus". Studies were included regardless of publication date and limited to English-language articles. Findings indicate that active compounds such as polysaccharides in aloe vera, curcuminoids in turmeric, and menthol in peppermint exhibit significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating properties. Chamomile and calendula alleviate itching through anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing effects, while lavender and licorice offer antimicrobial benefits alongside antipruritic relief. Evening primrose, rich in gamma-linolenic acid, is effective in atopic dermatitis-related itching. Despite promising preclinical and clinical results, challenges remain in standardizing dosages and formulations. The review highlights the necessity of further clinical trials to ensure efficacy and safety, advocating for integrating these botanical therapies into complementary palliative care practices. The widespread use of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in the production of edible coatings is returned to its biodegradable, biocompatible, and non-toxic nature. However, neat CMC edible coatings lack UV-shielding activity and have poor antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to develop a CMC-based coating with optimal UV-barrier properties by incorporating aloe vera (AV) and green synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs). The composition and synergistic effects of CMC, AV, and ZnO-NPs were optimized using central composite design to achieve the best UV-barrier properties. When using the optimized compositions of CMC (1.0 g), AV (3.0 g), and ZnO-NPs (5.0 wt%), the minimum UV-transmittance achieved was 4.75%. Fourier transform infra-red and wide-angle X-ray diffraction were used to confirm the interactions between the coating components. The incorporation of ZnO-NPs into CMC/AV was validated through surface morphology analysis via scanning electron microscopy and by examining the distribution of ZnO-NPs using transmission electron microscopy. CMC/AV/ZnO-NPs coatings showed excellent water barrier, mechanical, thermal, and antimicrobial properties when compared with the neat carboxymethyl cellulose coating. In addition, CMC/AV/ZnO-NPs coatings significantly resisted both mass loss and spoilage of green capsicum for a 15-day storage period. Series of composites containing 2.5–17.0% Ag and consisting of spherical silver nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 5.1 to 18.3 nm and from 6.4 to 21.8 nm for GM- and κ-CG-based composites, respectively, were prepared using the reducing and stabilizing ability of the natural polysaccharides galactomannan (GM) and κ-carrageenan (κ-CG). The antiradical activity of the obtained composites was evaluated using the decolorization of ABTS+· solution. It was found that the IC50 value of a composite's aqueous solution depends on the type of stabilizing ligand, the amount of inorganic phases, and the average size of AgNPs, and varies in the range of 0.015–0.08 mg·mL−1 and 0.03–0.59 mg·mL−1 for GM-AgNPs − κ-CG-AgNPs composites, respectively. GM-AgNPs − κ-CG-AgNPs hydrogels were successfully prepared and characterized on the basis of composites containing 2.5% Ag (demonstrating the most pronounced antiradical activity in terms of IC50 values per mole amount of Ag). It was found that the optimal ratio of composites that provided the best water-holding capacity and prolonged complete release of AgNPs from the hydrogel composition was 1:1. The influence of Ca2+ cations on the co-gel formation of the GM-AgNPs − κ-CG-AgNPs system, as well as the expression of their water-holding capacity and the rate of AgNPs release from the hydrogel carrier, was evaluated. Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMC)-based superabsorbents are promising materials for the development of agricultural matrices aimed at water management and slow-release fertilizer production. However, an increase in the CMC content tends to reduce their water-absorbing capacity. This study aims to develop a cost-effective method for producing eco-friendly superabsorbents with enhanced water-absorbing capacity by incorporating a porogen and employing lyophilization. Superabsorbents containing 10 wt% CMC (CMC-SAPs) were synthesized via free radical polymerization with the addition of 0, 5, or 10 wt% ammonium carbonate as a porogen, followed by lyophilization. The synthesized CMC-SAPs were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The results revealed that CMC-SAPs prepared with the incorporation of a porogen and/or subjected to lyophilization exhibited well-developed surfaces featuring macropores and cavities. Incorporating 5 wt% ammonium carbonate as a porogen, followed by lyophilization, increased the equilibrium swelling ratio to 61%. This improvement was attributed to the enhanced surface morphology of the modified CMC-SAPs, which facilitated water molecule diffusion into the SAP matrix, as confirmed by open porosity measurements. This hypothesis was further supported by the diffusion coefficient values, which were higher for porogen-containing and lyophilized SAPs compared to unmodified samples. Moreover, the CMC-SAPs demonstrated good reusability. Thus, the combination of porogen incorporation and subsequent lyophilization represents a promising approach for enhancing the water uptake capacity of CMC-based composite superabsorbents for sustainable agricultural applications. We present comparative studies of sol–gel ITO multilayered films undoped and doped with Nb or Zn (4 at.%). The films were obtained by successive depositions of five layers using the dip-coating sol–gel method on microscopic glass, SiO2/glass, and Si substrates. The influence of the type of substrates and dopant atoms on the structure and optical properties of the sol–gel ITO thin films is examined and discussed in detail. XRD patterns of these layers showed a polycrystalline structure with an average crystallite size of <11 nm. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the chemical bonding of dopants with oxygen and showed the absence of crystallized Nb(Zn)-oxide particles, indicated by the XRD pattern. Spectroscopic Ellipsometry and AFM imaging revealed a clear dependence of the optical parameters and surface morphology of the ITO and ITO:Nb(Zn) thin films on the type of substrates and dopants. The analysis of the current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics of the Al/ITO/Si structures revealed the presence of charge carrier traps in the ITO bulk and the ITO-Si interface. Hydrogels are interesting materials as delivery systems of various therapeutic agents, mainly due to the water-swollen network and the localized and sustained drug release. Herein, single-component starch-based hydrogels with enhanced degradation rates were produced by applying a facile synthesis and proposed for a novel delivery system of therapeutic molecules. Starch was oxidized with sodium periodate in water and mild conditions to generate aldehyde derivatives that, after a freeze-thaw procedure, were allowed to compact and stable hydrogels. Oxidized starch was also cross-linked with asparagine through a Schiff base reaction to link the active molecule directly to the polysaccharide structure. The materials were structurally and morphologically characterized, and the ability to adsorb and release over time an active molecule was proven by qNMR spectroscopy. The cytotoxicity was evaluated on CAL-27 cell line (oral squamous cell carcinoma). Results indicated that synthesized hydrogels lead to a "frozen proliferative" state on cells due to the swelling capability in the cell medium. This behavior was confirmed by flow cytometry data indicating the hydrogels induced less "early apoptosis" and more "late apoptosis" in the cells, compared to the untreated control. Aloe species are often used interchangeably for medicinal and cosmeceutical applications, presenting a challenge to the biological efficacy consistency of some herbal preparations. Sustainable production of high-quality commonly used medicinal plants remains a limitation for commercialisation. Thus, this study investigated the potential for plant substitution by examining bacterial endophytes capable of producing similar host plant secondary metabolites. The metabolite profiles and endophytic bacterial communities of endangered Aloe lettyae were compared with those of Aloe longibracteata using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Only 15 metabolites were significantly different between A. lettyae and A. longibracteata based on metabolite concentrations. However, both plants' functionality and potential application remain comparable. Phytohormones, including indole-3-acetate and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetate, were more concentrated in A. lettyae than A. longibracteata. Metabolites such as tyrosine, allantoin, and myo-inositol, with human health benefits, were annotated in both species. Aloe lettyae harboured a phylogenetically diverse bacteria community compared to A. longibracteata, with a higher richness of bacterial species, indicating a likelihood of diverse metabolic capabilities among the bacteria. Dominant endophytes, including Bacillus, Comamonas, and Pseudomonas, possess enzymes contributing to various metabolic pathways. The enzymes have the potential to impact the synthesis, or breakdown of plant metabolites, consequently influencing the overall metabolic composition of the host plant. Therefore, this study supports the interchangeability of A. lettyae and A. longibracteata due to their ability to produce similar metabolites, and although the Aloe species exhibit phylogenetically diverse endophytic communities, the feasibility of utilizing their endophytes as producers of secondary metabolites remains viable. The current study focused on the formulation and physical characterization of quercetin-loaded gelatin microspheres and their evaluation for potential use in drug delivery. For the experiment, gelatin microspheres (GM0—with gelatin alone, and GM1, GM2, and GM3—with different concentrations quercetin) were prepared. The physical characterization of microspheres was done using appropriate techniques. The suitability of a chosen formulation was adjudged by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), loose surface crystal study and equilibrium swelling study along with the in vitro drug delivery potential. The formulated microsphere sample, GM2 with an optimum quantity of the drug quercetin (380 mg per 1500 mg gelatin), showed comparable but slightly better physical and rheological properties than the other two samples facilitating better flow and packaging properties. FTIR analysis revealed the absence of interference between the drug and the gelatin coating matrix and exhibited minimum drug coating. Shrimp and crab shells are the most promising and viable source of raw material for the manufacturing of chitin and its derivatives. In-depth understanding of the biological properties of chitin and scientific advancements in the field of nanotechnology have enabled the development of high-performance chitin nanomaterials. Nanoscale chitin is of great economic value as a functional and reinforcement material for a wide range of applications including water purification. The use of nano-chitin to produce (bio) nanocomposites offers a good opportunity to prepare membrane materials with enhanced functional and structural properties. Chitosan-based membranes are found to be effective in water purification for the removal of pollutants like organic wastes, heavy metals, antibiotics, pathogenic microbes and acid waste. These membranes are environmentally friendly and can be used as a method to reduce humic acid waste from the aquatic environment.
