We report an orbital characterization of GJ1108Aab that is a low-mass binary system in pre-main-sequence phase. Via the combination of astrometry using adaptive optics and radial velocity measurements, an eccentric orbital solution of $e$=0.63 is obtained, which might be induced by the Kozai-Lidov mechanism with a widely separated GJ1108B system. Combined with several observed properties, we confirm the system is indeed young. Columba is the most probable moving group, to which the GJ1108A system belongs, although its membership to the group has not been established. If the age of Columba is assumed for GJ1108A, the dynamical masses of both GJ1108Aa and GJ1108Ab ($M_{\rm dynamical,GJ1108Aa}=0.72\pm0.04 M_{\odot}$ and $M_{\rm dynamical,GJ1108Ab}=0.30\pm0.03 M_{\odot}$) are more massive than what an evolutionary model predicts based on the age and luminosities. We consider the discrepancy in mass comparison can attribute to an age uncertainty; the system is likely older than stars in Columba, and effects that are not implemented in classical models such as accretion history and magnetic activity are not preferred to explain the mass discrepancy. We also discuss the performance of the evolutionary model by compiling similar low-mass objects in evolutionary state based on the literature. Consequently, it is suggested that the current model on average reproduces the mass of resolved low-mass binaries without any significant offsets., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

We report the direct imaging detection of a low-mass companion to a young, moderately active star V450 And, that was previously identified with the radial velocity method. The companion was found in high-contrast images obtained with the Subaru Telescope equipped with the HiCIAO camera and AO188 adaptive optics system. From the public ELODIE and SOPHIE archives we extracted available high-resolution spectra and radial velocity (RV) measurements, along with RVs from the Lick planet search program. We combined our multi-epoch astrometry with these archival, partially unpublished RVs, and found that the companion is a low-mass star, not a brown dwarf, as previously suggested. We found the best-fitting dynamical masses to be $m_1=1.141_{-0.091}^{+0.037}$ and $m_2=0.279^{+0.023}_{-0.020}$ M$_\odot$. We also performed spectral analysis of the SOPHIE spectra with the iSpec code. The Hipparcos time-series photometry shows a periodicity of $P=5.743$ d, which is also seen in SOPHIE spectra as an RV modulation of the star A. We interpret it as being caused by spots on the stellar surface, and the star to be rotating with the given period. From the rotation and level of activity, we found that the system is $380^{+220}_{-100}$ Myr old, consistent with an isochrone analysis ($220^{+2120}_{-90}$ Myr). Dust trapping accelerates the coagulation of dust particles, and thus it represents an initial step toward the formation of planetesimals. We report $H$-band (1.6 um) linear polarimetric observations and 0.87 mm interferometric continuum observations toward a transitional disk around LkHa 330. As results, a pair of spiral arms were detected in the $H$-band emission and an asymmetric (potentially arm-like) structure was detected in the 0.87 mm continuum emission. We discuss the origin of the spiral arm and the asymmetric structure, and suggest that a massive unseen planet is the most plausible explanation. The possibility of dust trapping and grain growth causing the asymmetric structure was also investigated through the opacity index (beta) by plotting the observed SED slope between 0.87 mm from our SMA observation and 1.3 mm from literature. The results imply that grains are indistinguishable from ISM-like dust in the east side ($beta = 2.0 pm 0.5$), but much smaller in the west side $beta = 0.7^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$, indicating differential dust size distribution between the two sides of the disk. Combining the results of near-infrared and submillimeter observations, we conjecture that the spiral arms exist at the upper surface and an asymmetric structure resides in the disk interior. Future observations at centimeter wavelengths and differential polarization imaging in other bands (Y to K) with extreme AO imagers are required to understand how large dust grains form and to further explore the dust distribution in the disk., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, AJ accepted for publication

As is the case for all techniques involved in the research for exoplanets, direct imaging has to take into account the probability of so-called astrophysical false positives, which are phenomena that mimic the signature of objects we are seeking. In this work we aim to present a case of a false positive found during a direct imaging survey conducted with VLT/NACO. A promising exoplanet candidate was detected around the K2-type star HD\,8049 in July 2010.Its contrast of $\Delta H$=7.05 at 1.57 arcsec allowed us to guess the presence of a 35 \MJup companion at 50 projected AU, for the nominal system age and heliocentric distance.To check whether it was gravitationally bound to the host star, as opposed to an unrelated background object, we re-observed the system one year later and concluded a high probability of a bound system. We also used radial velocity measurements of the host star, spanning a time range of $\sim$ 30 yr, to constrain the companion's mass and orbital properties, as well as to probe the host star's spectral age indicators and general spectral energy distribution. We also obtained for the companion $U$-band imaging with EFOSC and $NIR$ spectroscopy. Combining all these information we conclude that the companion of HD\,8049 is a white dwarf (WD), with temperature $T_{eff}=18800 \pm 2100$ K and mass $M_{WD}=0.56 \pm 0.08 M_{\odot}$. The significant radial velocity trend coupled with the imaging data indicate that the most probable orbit has a semimajor axis of about 50 AU.The discrepancy between the age indicators suggested against a bona-fide young star. The moderately large level of chromospheric activity and fast rotation, mimicking the properties of a young star, might be induced by the exchange of mass with the progenitor of the WD. We use WIRC, IR images of the Antennae (NGC 4038/4039) together with the extensive catalogue of 120 X-ray point sources (Zezas et al. 2006) to search for counterpart candidates. Using our proven frame-tie technique, we find 38 X-ray sources with IR counterparts, almost doubling the number of IR counterparts to X-ray sources first identified in Clark et al. (2007). In our photometric analysis, we consider the 35 IR counterparts that are confirmed star clusters. We show that the clusters with X-ray sources tend to be brighter, K_s ~16 mag, with (J-K_s) = 1.1 mag. We then use archival HST images of the Antennae to search for optical counterparts to the X-ray point sources. We employ our previous IR-to-X-ray frame-tie as an intermediary to establish a precise optical-to-X-ray frame-tie with <0.6 arcsec rms positional uncertainty. Due to the high optical source density near the X-ray sources, we determine that we cannot reliably identify counterparts. Comparing the HST positions to the 35 identified IR star cluster counterparts, we find optical matches for 27 of these sources. Using Bruzual-Charlot spectral evolutionary models, we find that most clusters associated with an X-ray source are massive, ~10^6 M_sun, young, ~10^6 yr, with moderate metallicities, Z=0.05., Comment: 9 page, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Fomalhaut and epsilon Eridani are two young, nearby stars that possess extended debris disks whose structures suggest the presence of perturbing planetary objects. With its high sensitivity and stable point spread function, Spitzer/IRAC is uniquely capable of detecting cool, Jupiter-like planetary companions whose peak emission is predicted to occur near 4.5 um. We report on deep IRAC imaging of these two stars, taken at 3.6 and 4.5 um using subarray mode and in all four channels in wider-field full array mode. Observations acquired at two different telescope roll angles allowed faint surrounding objects to be separated from the stellar diffraction pattern. No companion candidates were detected at the reported position of Fomalhaut b with 3 sigma model-dependent mass upper limits of 3 MJ (for an age of 200 Myr). Around epsilon Eridani we instead set a limit of 4 and <1 MJ (1 Gyr model age) at the inner and outer edge of the sub-millimeter debris ring, respectively. These results are consistent with non-detections in recent near-infrared imaging searches, and set the strongest limits to date on the presence of planets outside epsilon Eridani sub-millimeter ring., Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal. We use the previously-identified 15 infrared star-cluster counterparts to X-ray point sources in the interacting galaxies NGC 4038/4039 (the Antennae) to study the relationship between total cluster mass and X-ray binary number. This significant population of X-Ray/IR associations allows us to perform, for the first time, a statistical study of X-ray point sources and their environments. We define a quantity, \eta, relating the fraction of X-ray sources per unit mass as a function of cluster mass in the Antennae. We compute cluster mass by fitting spectral evolutionary models to K_s luminosity. Considering that this method depends on cluster age, we use four different age distributions to explore the effects of cluster age on the value of \eta and find it varies by less than a factor of four. We find a mean value of \eta for these different distributions of \eta = 1.7 x 10^-8 M_\sun^-1 with \sigma_\eta = 1.2 x 10^-8 M_\sun^-1. Performing a \chi^2 test, we demonstrate \eta could exhibit a positive slope, but that it depends on the assumed distribution in cluster ages. While the estimated uncertainties in \eta are factors of a few, we believe this is the first estimate made of this quantity to ``order of magnitude'' accuracy. We use deep J and Ks images of the Antennae (NGC 4038/9) obtained with WIRC on the Palomar 200-inch telescope, together with the Chandra X-ray source list of Zezas et al. (2002a), to search for IR counterparts to X-ray point sources. We establish an X-ray/IR astrometric frame tie with 0.5" rms residuals over a \~4.3' field. We find 13 ``strong'' IR counterparts brighter than Ks = 17.8 mag and < 1.0" from X-ray sources, and an additional 6 ``possible'' IR counterparts between 1.0" and 1.5" from X-ray sources. The surface density of IR sources near the X-ray sources suggests only ~2 of the ``strong'' counterparts and ~3 of the ``possible'' counterparts are chance superpositions of unrelated objects. Comparing both strong and possible IR counterparts to our photometric study of ~220 Antennae, IR clusters, we find the IR counterparts to X-ray sources are \~1.2 mag more luminous in Ks than average non-X-ray clusters. We also note that the X-ray/IR matches are concentrated in the spiral arms and ``overlap'' regions of the Antennae. This implies that these X-ray sources lie in the most ``super'' of the Antennae's Super Star Clusters, and thus trace the recent massive star formation history here. Based on the N_H inferred from the X-ray sources without IR counterparts, we determine that the absence of most of the ``missing'' IR counterparts is because they are intrinsically less luminous in the IR, implying that they trace a different (possibly older) stellar population., Comment: 27 pages, 10 Poscript figures, accepted by ApJ

In this second of a two-paper sequence, we present Monte Carlo population simulation results of brown dwarf companion data collected during the Cornell High-order Adaptive Optics Survey for brown dwarf companions (CHAOS). Making reasonable assumptions of orbital parameters (random inclination, random eccentricity and random longitude of pericentre) and age distributions, and using published mass functions, we find that the brown dwarf companion fraction around main sequence stars is 0.0%-9.3% for the 25-100 AU semi-major axis region. We find a corresponding L-dwarf companion fraction of 0.0%-3.3%. We compare our population analysis methods and results with techniques and results presented by several other groups. In this comparison we discover that systematic errors (most notably resulting from orbital projection effects) occur in the majority of previously published brown dwarf companion population estimates, leading authors to claim results not supported by the observational data., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. 21 pages including 4 figures and 1 table

In this paper we report that a bright, X-ray source in the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/9), previously identified as an ultra-luminous X-ray source, is in fact a background quasar. We identify an isolated infrared and optical counterpart within 0.3+/-0.5 arcseconds the X-ray source X-37. After acquiring an optical spectrum of its counterpart, we use the narrow [OIII] and broad H_alpha emission lines to identify X-37 as a quasar at a redshift of z=0.26. Through a U, V, and K_s photometric analysis, we demonstrate that most of the observable light along this line of sight is from the quasar. We present deep near-infrared images of the Antennae galaxies, taken with the Palomar Wide-Field Infrared Camera WIRC. The images cover a 4.33' x 4.33' (24.7kpc x 24.7kpc) area around the galaxy interaction zone. We derive J and K_s band photometric fluxes for 172 infrared star clusters, and discuss details of the two galactic nuclei and the overlap region. We also discuss the properties of a subset of 27 sources which have been detected with WIRC, HST and the VLA. The sources in common are young clusters of less than 10 Myr, which show no correlation between their infrared colors and 6 cm radio properties. These clusters cover a wide range in infrared color due to extinction and evolution. In this first of a two-paper sequence, we report techniques and results of the Cornell High-order Adaptive Optics Survey for brown dwarf companions (CHAOS). At the time of this writing, this study represents the most sensitive published population survey of brown dwarf companions to main sequence stars, for separation akin to our own outer solar system. The survey, conducted using the Palomar 200-inch Hale Telescope, consists of K-short coronagraphic observations of 80 main sequence stars out to 22 parsecs. At 1 arcsecond separations from a typical target system, the survey achieves median sensitivities 10 magnitudes fainter than the parent star. In terms of companion mass, the survey achieves typical sensitivities of 25 Jupiter masses (1 Gyr), 50 Jupiter masses (solar age), and 60 Jupiter masses (10 Gyr), using evolutionary models of Baraffe et al. (2003). Using common proper motion to distinguish companions from field stars, we find that no systems show positive evidence of a substellar companion (searchable separation 1-15 arcseconds [projected separation ~ 10-155 AU at the median target distance]). Epsilon Eridani is one of the nearest solar-type stars. Its proximity and relatively young age allow high-contrast imaging observations to achieve sensitivities to planets at narrow separations down to an inner radius of approximately 5 AU. Previous observational studies of the system report a dust disk with asymmetric morphology as well as a giant planet with large orbital eccentricity, which may require another massive companion to induce the peculiar morphology and to enhance the large orbital eccentricity. In this paper, we report results from deep high-contrast imaging observations to detect the previously reported planet and search for other unseen less massive companions with Subaru/HiCIAO, Gemini-South/NICI, and VLT/NACO. No positive detection was made, but high-contrast measurements with the CH4S narrow-band filter of HiCIAO achieved sensitivities at 14.7 mag differential magnitude level, at an angular separation of 1.0''. In terms of planetary mass, as determined by cooling evolutionary models, the highest sensitivities were achieved by the Lp broad-band filter of NACO, resulting in sensitivities corresponding to 1.8, 2.8, and 4.5 M(sub jup) at the projected separation of 3 AU, if 200, 400, and 800 Myr is assumed for the age of the system, respectively. We also discuss origins of the dust disk from the detection sensitivity in the planetary mass and find that a less massive eccentric planet is preferred for disk stirring, which is consistent with the orbital parameters of epsilon Eri b claimed from the previous long-term radial velocity monitoring.
