Abstract

Patterns in biology can be considered as predetermined, or arising from a self-organizing instability. Variability in the pattern can thus be interpreted as a trace of an instability, growing out from noise. Variability can thus hint toward an underlying morphogenetic mechanism. Here we present the variability of the gastrovascular system of the Jellyfish Aurelia. In this variability emerge a typical biased reconnection between canals, and correlated reconnections. Both phenomena can be interpreted as traces of mechanistic effects, the swimming contractions on the tissue surrounding the gastrovascular canals, and the mean fluid pressure inside them, respectively. This reveals the gastrovascular network as a model system to study morphogenesis of circulation networks and the morphogenetic mechanisms at play.

10. Antwerp Unearthed: The capacity of the historic canal network beneath Antwerp in mediating future urgencies for environmental and social infrastructures.

Abstract

The performance of a city is dependent on the performance of its infrastructure. As a result, the surface-level world is inseparable from the subsurface world. However, cities around the world are facing a shortage of available space both aboveground and belowground. The existing urban fabric has over time become unfit for the addition of new infrastructure systems that are required for the future. Spatial conflict problems are arising between necessary urban infrastructures, in Antwerp specifically regarding green, blue, place, and memory systems. Nevertheless, Antwerp has an opportunity: a decommissioned canal network that lies beneath the city as tunnels that can act as a spatial mediator. Establishing this potential, the main research question asks: how can the reappropriation of the decommissioned underground canal system in Antwerp spatially mediate the city’s urgencies regarding environmental and social infrastructure? While the research question calls for the implementation of four infrastructural themes (green, blue, place, memory), an exploration of background theories on urban infrastructure implementation indicates a research gap regarding a systems-thinking approach. In this case, the Environmental Maximization Method (BOOM-Duijvestein, 1998), with its five design phases (inventory, analysis, maximization, optimization, integration), is useful. Together, the four infrastructure themes and the five design phases form a matrix that offers an appropriate design framework in the context of Antwerp. Antwerp Unearthed, as a plan, provides two answers to the research question of this report. The decommissioned underground canal system in Antwerp spatially mediates the city’s future urgencies regarding environmental and social infrastructure by pairing external problems with internal potentials and by forming a singly functioning infrastructure system. Abstract

Integrating with the national project of irrigation canal lining in the Egyptian countryside, the present study is introduced. The study presents a technical comparison of differential equations that are usually used for estimating the seeped water from the earthen irrigation canals. The quantities of irrigation water that are lost due to seepage are great enough to decrease the wide gap between the needed and available water quantities that Egypt seriously suffers from. So, the accurate estimation of the seeped water quantities is very important. The study aims to select the suitable seepage equations for the Egyptian soil, climate, and the currently used distributed irrigation system. It is also to assess the understudy network by estimating the lost water quantities due to seepage by using the designed water sections’ dimensions and comparing the results with those obtained using the existing field dimensions. In addition, to determining the agricultural area that can be added to the current served area after preserving such great quantities. From the Assiut countryside, the El-Sont canal and its network were chosen to be a case study. After a careful technical reading of the seepage equations that researchers introduced previously, the closest relationships to the case study were used. Results indicated that using the suggested relationship by Nazir Ahmed and the Indian equation, gave the maximum seepage quantities for the entire El-Sont canal network with about 21.5% of the total canal head discharge. Most of this lost water can be saved due to the implementation of the national project for irrigation canal lining. This large amount of preserved water can be used to irrigate 15% of the currently served area.

Abstract

Rainfed agriculture is dependent on rainfall and runoff patterns, especially in lowland areas that rely on pumping operation to remove excess water from the drainage network. Polder areas are extremely vulnerable to saltwater intrusion and subsequent soil salinization driven by rising sea levels and accelerated by climate change. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the recharge and discharge pattern in the Vidrice polder, a drainage canal network within the Neretva River Delta agroecosystem used to collect the surface and subsurface runoff from the agricultural land and saltwater infiltration through the aquifer. Water regime data are collected over an 18-month period of real-time monitoring at 15 min intervals on three stations along the primary drainage canal and one station at the secondary canal. Analysis of water level flashiness in the Vidrice polder using the Richards-Baker flashiness index (R-Bindex) indicates that daily pumping of water infiltrated in the canal network is sub-optimal: discharge fluctuates significantly more than recharge, by 46% on average, resulting in unnecessary lowering of the water level in the drainage network. The results show that the correlation between the intensive rainfall events (>10 mm/day) and the recharge rates can be used to modify the daily pumping operation and maintain high freshwater levels in the canal network to increase the resistance to infiltration and reduce saltwater intrusion into the polder.

Abstract

The dimensioning of canal geometry in a surface drainage network influences the size and functionality of canal structures, reduces flood hazard, and consequently imposes restrictions on land use. Reliable free-surface flow calculation for optimization of the canal network can be challenging because numerous hydraulic structures and canal interactions influence the flow regime. The HEC-RAS software of the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Hydrologic Engineering Center is often used for this purpose as it allows the user to simulate the effect of numerous hydraulic structures on flow regime. This paper presents a MATLAB function, DrainCAN, for generating a HEC-RAS model from standard runoff input data, i.e., topographic data and canal design geometry (profile and slope). The DrainCAN function allows for fast optimization of the network geometry—it generates normal flow depth estimation and observed water levels in critical locations that need to be optimized. Advantages of the DrainCAN function are fast generation of the HEC-RAS hydraulic model files from simple input files, introduction of optimization variables in the model, and automatic adjustment of model geometry for computational junctions. This allows fast iteration of the canal design parameters, namely cross-sectional geometry, invert elevation, and longitudinal slope, and the evaluation of introduced changes on the flow regime.
