PURPOSE: CT Hounsfield Units (HUs) are converted to electron density using a calibration curve obtained from physical measurements of an electron density phantom. HU values assigned to an MRI-derived synthetic computed tomography (sCT) may present a different relationship with electron density compared to CT HU. Correct assignment of sCT HU values is critical for accurate dose calculation and delivery. The goals of this work were to develop a sCT calibration curve using patient data acquired on a clinically commissioned CT scanner and assess for CyberKnife- and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT)-based MR-only treatment planning of prostate SBRT. METHODS: Same-day CT and MRI simulation in the treatment position were performed on 10 patients treated with SBRT to the prostate. Dixon in-phase and out-of-phase MRIs were acquired on a 3T scanner using a 3D T1-weighted gradient-echo sequence to generate sCTs using a commercial sCT algorithm. CT and sCT datasets were co-registered and HU values compared using mean absolute error (MAE). An optimized HU-to-density calibration curve was created based on average HU values across an institutional patient database for each of the four sCT tissue types. Clinical CyberKnife and VMAT treatment plans were generated on each patient CT and recomputed onto corresponding sCTs. Dose distributions computed using CT and sCT were compared using gamma criteria and dose-volume-histograms. RESULTS: For the optimized calibration curve, HU values were -96, 37, 204, and 1170 and relative electron densities were 0.95, 1.04, 1.1, and 1.7 for adipose, soft tissue, inner bone, and outer bone, respectively. The proposed sCT protocol produced total MAE of 94 ± 20HU. Gamma values mean ± std (min-max) were 98.9% ± 0.9% (97.1%-100%) and 97.7% ± 1.3% (95.3%-99.3%) for VMAT and CyberKnife plans, respectively. CONCLUSION: MRI-derived sCT using the proposed approach shows excellent dosimetric agreement with conventional CT simulation, demonstrating the feasibility of MRI-derived sCT for prostate SBRT treatment planning.

High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) has emerged as a powerful imaging technique for characterizing bone microarchitecture in the human peripheral skeleton. The second-generation HR-pQCT scanner provides improved spatial resolution and a shorter scan time. However, the transition from the first-generation (XCTI) to second-generation HR-pQCT scanners (XCTII) poses challenges for longitudinal studies, multi-center trials, and comparison to historical data. Cross-calibration, an established approach for determining relationships between measurements obtained from different devices, can bridge this gap and enable the utilization and comparison of legacy data. The goal of this study was to establish cross-calibration equations to estimate XCTII measurements from XCTI data, using both the standard and Laplace-Hamming (LH) binarization approaches. Thirty-six volunteers (26-85 yr) were recruited and their radii and tibiae were scanned on both XCTI and XCTII scanners. XCTI images were analyzed using the manufacturer's standard protocol. XCTII images were analyzed twice: using the manufacturer's standard protocol and the LH segmentation approach previously developed and validated by our team. Linear regression analysis was used to establish cross-calibration equations. Results demonstrated strong correlations between XCTI and XCTII density and geometry outcomes. For most microstructural outcomes, although there were considerable differences in absolute values, correlations between measurements obtained from different scanners were strong, allowing for accurate cross-calibration estimations. For some microstructural outcomes with a higher sensitivity to spatial resolution (eg, trabecular thickness, cortical pore diameter), XCTII standard protocol resulted in poor correlations between the scanners, while our LH approach improved these correlations and decreased the difference in absolute values and the proportional bias for other measurements. For these reasons and due to the improved accuracy of our LH approach compared with the standard approach, as established in our previous study, we propose that investigators should use the LH approach for analyzing XCTII scans, particularly when comparing to XCTI data.

Assessment of attitudes towards statistics [ATS] is needed to support the success of statistics education in tertiary institutions, so measuring instruments with high accuracy is required. However, existing instruments to measure ATS have not considered the use of technology as an essential variable affecting success in statistics education. The current study sought to fill this gap by developing a standardized instrument to measure ATS and considering aspects of technology use as a necessity for statistics education in the modern era. The study involved 367 students from various study programs spread across several universities in Indonesia as participants. To examine the quality of the instrument, we performed factor analysis, reliability estimation, and item calibration. We calibrated items based on classical test theory [CTT] and item response theory [IRT] using the graded response model [GRM]. Exploratory factor analysis [EFA] indicated three main factors (i.e., interest, difficulty, and value) for measuring attitudes toward statistics. Factor loading of each factor component > 0.45, indicating that all items contributed to the main factor. Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the three factors ranged from 0.784 to 0.929, indicating that the instrument was reliable. Item calibration based on CTT and IRT-GRM indicated that item performance was satisfactory regarding item endorsement and discrimination. In addition, the information function indicated that the instrument accurately measures attitudes from very low to very high levels. Overall, the psychometric properties of the instrument indicated that the instrument was valid, reliable, and feasible for use in practice and research in the field of education.
