Chemotherapy induced ovarian failure and infertility is an important concern in female cancer patients of reproductive age or younger, and non-invasive, pharmacological approaches to maintain ovarian function are urgently needed. Given the role of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) as an essential cofactor for drug detoxification, we sought to test whether boosting the NAD(P) + metabolome could protect ovarian function. We show that pharmacological or transgenic strategies to replenish the NAD + metabolome ameliorates chemotherapy induced female infertility in mice, as measured by oocyte yield, follicle health, and functional breeding trials. Importantly, treatment of a triple-negative breast cancer mouse model with the NAD + precursor nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) reduced tumour growth and did not impair the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs in vivo or in diverse cancer cell lines. We report genome sequence data from six individuals excavated from the base of a medieval well at a site in Norwich, UK. A revised radiocarbon analysis of the assemblage is consistent with these individuals being part of a historically attested episode of antisemitic violence on 6 February 1190 CE. We find that four of these individuals were closely related and all six have strong genetic affinities with modern Ashkenazi Jews. We identify four alleles associated with genetic disease in Ashkenazi Jewish populations and infer variation in pigmentation traits, including the presence of red hair. Simulations indicate that Ashkenazi-associated genetic disease alleles were already at appreciable frequencies, centuries earlier than previously hypothesized. Freshwater planarians are well known for their remarkable plasticity and regenerative capabilities. Most studies of planarian regeneration have specifically examined regeneration after transverse or longitudinal sectioning or during homeostasis in intact adults. However, tissue transplantation, first performed over a century ago, constitutes another important tool in the study of regeneration in planarians, and can be easily performed given this species' extraordinary healing capacity and its lack of a circulatory system. Studies conducted to date have demonstrated the viability of transplantations involving a variety of tissue types of different positional identities, affecting any of the 3 main body axes. Moreover, these grafting experiments have shown that tissues possess axial positional identities, which are retained following transplantation. The confrontation between different positional identities that occurs after any type of tissue transplantation is resolved by the formation of a blastema, consisting of undifferentiated tissue produced by adult pluripotent stem cells (neoblasts). This blastema intercalates the positional identities of the graft and host tissues. The recent discovery of pathways involved in planarian growth, patterning, and organogenesis, as well as corresponding molecular markers, makes tissue transplantation a vital new tool with which to explore pattern formation. Here, we discuss the different grafting approaches used in planarians, and the corresponding intercalary regenerative response, placing particular emphasis on the respective contributions of donor and host tissue. Moreover, we discuss the temporal induction of blastema formation, and present new molecular data on the generation of an ectopic anterior/posterior axis in response to dorsal/ventral confrontations between host and donor tissue., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Among renewable energy technologies, particular attention is paid to electrochemically transforming methanol into valuable formate and storing energy into supercapacitors. In this study, we detailed a simple colloidal-based protocol for synthesizing a series of alloy nanoparticles with tuned Ni/Co atomic ratios, thereby optimizing their electrochemical performance. With the addition of 1 M methanol in 1 M KOH, the optimized composition was able to electrochemically produce formate at 0.149 mmol cm -2  h -1 with a Faradaic efficiency up to 95.1 % at 0.6 V versus Hg/HgO within a 22 h testing period. In 1 M KOH solution without methanol, the supercapacitive performance was achieved at a specific capacitance of over 1500 F g -1 , and outstanding cycling stability with only approximately 20 % decay after continuous 10000 charging-discharging cycles. Context. Telluric correction is one of the critically important outstanding issues for extreme precision radial velocities and exoplanet atmosphere observations. Thorough removal of small so-called micro tellurics across the entire wavelength range of optical spectro-graphs is necessary in order to reach the extreme radial velocity precision required to detect Earth-analog exoplanets orbiting in the habitable zone of solar-type stars. Likewise, proper treatment of telluric absorption will be important for exoplanetary atmosphere observations with high-resolution spectrographs on future extremely large telescopes (ELTs). Aims. In this work, we introduce the Telluric AUtoencoder (TAU). TAU is an accurate high-speed telluric correction framework built to extract the telluric spectrum with previously unobtained precision in a computationally efficient manner. Methods.TAU is built on a neural network autoencoder trained to extract a highly detailed telluric transmission spectrum from a large set of high-precision observed solar spectra. We accomplished this by reducing the data into a compressed representation, allowing us to unveil the underlying solar spectrum and simultaneously uncover the different modes of variation in the observed spectra relating to the absorption from H2O and O2 in the atmosphere of Earth. Results. We demonstrate the approach on data from the HARPS-N spectrograph and show how the extracted components can be scaled to remove H2O and O2 telluric contamination with improved accuracy and at a significantly lower computational expense than the current state of the art synthetic approach molecfit. We also demonstrate the capabilities of TAU to remove telluric contamination from observations of the ultra-hot Jupiter HAT-P-70b allowing for the retrieval of the atmospheric signal.
