Abstract

It has been argued recently that the so-called nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) is an observable useful for identifying the quark-gluon plasma. We discuss the effect of Fermi motion in nuclei on $R_{AA}$ at CERN SPS and BNL RHIC energies. Contrary to the simple intuition, rather large effects are found for CERN SPS. The Fermi motion in nuclei contributes significantly to the Cronin effect. The effect found is qualitatively similar to the one observed experimentally at CERN energies and similar to the one obtained in the models of multiple scattering of initial partons. Abstract

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons or light complex particles in reactions of heavy ions at pre-relativistic energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term of the nuclear equation of state at supra-saturation densities. In the ASY-EOS experiment at the GSI laboratory, flows of neutrons and light charged particles were measured for 197Au+197Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. Flow results obtained for the Au+Au system, in comparison with predictions of the UrQMD transport model, confirm the moderately soft to linear density dependence of the symmetry energy deduced from the earlier FOPI-LAND data.

Abstract

Marian Smoluchowski jest jednym z najczęściej cytowanych polskich naukowców – Web of Science określa liczbę cytowań jego prac w okresie od 1894 do 2014 roku na 7235 (Maria Curie-Skłodowska była w tym czasie cytowana 1582 razy). Regularnie przywoływane są równania dotyczące teorii procesów stochastycznych, a równanie ciągłości Smoluchowskiego stosowane jest w opisach procesów sedymentacji i koagulacji. Jego badania dotyczące ruchów Browna przyczyniły się do triumfu teorii atomistycznej w fizyce. Dzięki ich wykorzystaniu Richard Zsigmondy, Jean Perrin i Theodor Svedberg otrzymali w latach 1925–1926 Nagrody Nobla. Książka przedstawia wkład polskiego fizyka w naukę oraz filozofię, zwłaszcza w filozofię przyrody. Badania Smoluchowskiego dotyczące przyczyny i przypadku doprowadziły do wprowadzenia rachunku prawdopodobieństwa do fizyki. Jego teoria kryterium użyteczności odpowiada na pytania, jak rozwija się nauka i jak weryfikujemy hipotezy oraz teorie. Udowadnia, że użyteczność jest kategorią uniwersalną i odnosi się do wszystkich aspektów funkcjonowania człowieka w świecie przyrody.
