Abstract Purpose It is a central goal in current ecology to investigate the effects of global changes on ecosystem productivity, which includes above- and below-ground plant productivity as well as soil microbial productivity, but most studies focus on aboveground plant productivity. As plant and microbial communities have different attributes, it is intuitive to hypothesize that belowground plant root productivity will respond to global changes more similarly as aboveground stem/leaf productivity than soil microbial productivity; however, this hypothesis remains largely unexplored. Methods Here we conducted a long-term nitrogen deposition experiment in the Eurasian steppe, manipulating nine rates (0–50 g N m− 2 yr− 1) at two frequencies under two management strategies (fencing or mowing). Results Belowground plant productivity was found to respond similarly as soil microbial productivity rather than aboveground plant productivity, contrary to the hypothesis. And this pattern was more obvious under mowing than fencing, because mowing decreased soil water content and caused another pressure beyond the decreased pH induced by N addition. Conclusions Overall, our results demonstrated the importance of microhabitat (below- or above-ground) relative to community attribute (plants or microorganisms) in determining productivity response to nitrogen deposition, emphasizing the necessity to integratively study the response of both above- and below-ground productivities to global changes.

Background Previous meta-analyses have investigated the efficacy of lipid-lowering therapies for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease; however, few have focused on patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This meta-analysis aimed to compare the benefits of intensive lipid-lowering therapy with those of background statin therapy in patients with ACS.Methods Searches were performed on PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases for articles published until April 13, 2023. Randomized controlled trials that compared intensive lipid-lowering therapies and background statin therapies in patients with prior ACS and recorded the outcome of three-point major cardiovascular events (MACE) were included. The risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used as a measure of primary and secondary outcomes.Results Nine trials involving 38,640 patients with ACS were identified. Abstract Purpose Cutaneous metastasis (CM) accounts for 5–30% of patients with breast cancer (BC) and presents unfavorable response to treatment and poor prognosis. A better understanding of the molecular alterations involved in metastasis is essential, which would help identify diagnostic and efficacy biomarkers for CM. Materials : We retrospectively reviewed a total of 13 patients with histological or cytological diagnosis of breast cancer and CM. Clinical information was extracted from the medical records. The mutational landscape of matched primary tumors with their lymph nodes or CM tissues were analyzed using next-generation sequencing (NGS) of 425 cancer-relevant genes. All tissues were also analyzed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The association of prognosis with various clinical and molecular factors was also evaluated. Results More than half of the patients were Ki67 low ( 50%) showed significantly shorter T1 than the Ki67 low group (≤ 50%) (median 12.5 vs. 50.0 months, P = 0.036). TP53, PIK3CA mutations, and TERT amplification group were associated with inferior T2 (median 11 vs. 36 months, P = 0.065; 8 vs. 36 months, P = 0.013, 7 vs. 36 months, P = 0.003, respectively). All p values were not adjusted. Conclusion We compared the genomic features of primary breast cancer tissues with their corresponding CM tissues and discussed potential genes and pathways that may contribute to the skin metastasis of advanced breast cancers patients. TP53, PIK3CA mutant, and TERT amplification may serve as biomarkers for poor prognosis for CM patients.

Soil nematodes are among the most significant soil-dwelling organisms in forest ecosystems. However, the factors that shape the distribution of soil nematodes are still not well explored. Therefore, we collected soil samples from 20 forest sites along the eastern transect of China and sequenced 18S rRNA V9 region to reveal the biodiversity of soil nematodes. Our study found that soil nematode richness is higher in temperate mixed needleleaf and broadleaf forests compared with the other four vegetation regions. Soil physiochemical properties overrode climatic factors to be the primary drivers of soil nematode richness and community composition. Importantly, the soil nematode richness significantly enhanced ecosystem multifunctionality, especially bacterial biomass and enzyme activities, with a determination coefficient (r2) of 0.23, suggesting that soil nematodes played essential roles in the forest ecosystem.

Abstract Background Malignant progression is the major cause of poor prognosis in breast cancer (BC) patients. Plasma exosomal miRNAs have been reported to be involved in tumor progression, but their roles in BC remain unclear. Methods We performed plasma exosomal miRNA sequencing on 45 individuals, including healthy controls and nonmetastatic and metastatic BC patients. We examined the correlation between miRNA expression in tumor tissues and plasma exosomes in BC patients by qRT‒PCR. The effects of exosomal miR-361-3p on BC cells were determined by CellTiter-Glo, migration and wound healing assays. The target genes of miR-361-3p and downstream pathways were explored by dual-luciferase reporter assay, RNA knockdown, rescue experiments, and western blotting. We utilized murine xenograft model to further assess the impact of plasma exosomal miR-361-3p on the malignant progression of BC. Results We found that the expression level of plasma exosomal miR-361-3p gradually increased with malignant progression in BC patients, and the expression of miR-361-3p in plasma exosomes and BC tissues was positively correlated. Consistently, exosomal miR-361-3p enhanced the migration and proliferation of two BC cell lines, MDA-MB-231 and SK-BR-3. Furthermore, our data showed that miR-361-3p inhibited two novel target genes, ETV7 and BATF2, to activate the PAI-1/ERK pathway, leading to increased BC cell viability. Finally, the consistency of the in vivo experimental results supported that elevated plasma exosomal miR-361-3p promote the malignant progression of BC. Conclusions We found for the first time that plasma exosomal miR-361-3p was associated with malignant progression in BC patients. Mechanistically, exosomal miR-361-3p can enhance the migration and proliferation of BC cells by targeting the ETV7 and BATF2/PAI-1/ERK pathways. Our data suggest that plasma exosomal miR-361-3p has the potential to serve as a biomarker for predicting malignant progression in BC patients.

Abstract Background Low human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression is an emerging concept in breast cancer that is defined as immunohistochemistry (IHC) 1 + or IHC 2 + and negative in situ hybridization (ISH) but has been poorly investigated. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of low HER2 expression among HER2-negative breast cancers and compare the clinicopathological features and prognosis of HER2-low patients with those of HER2-zero patients. Methods We collected the data of 684 patients with primary HER2-negative breast cancer who underwent surgery between January 2012 and September 2021 from our self-built database. Clinicopathological features, recurrence-free interval (RFI) and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) were compared between HER2-low and HER2-zero (IHC 0) patients. Accumulation of arsenic (As) in rice grain was reported in many regions of the world, including the United States, which has been a threat to human health. This field research investigated the grain As accumulation and its relationship with the uptake of selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), and cadmium (Cd) in soils with and without monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA) amended, as effects of selected rice cultivars and water management. Results indicated that MSMA increased the accumulation of As and Se but decreased Mo for all six cultivars under four irrigation management. MSMA also increased grain-Cd in some cultivars. In no MSMA-amended soil (Native soil), intermittent flooding decreased grain-As by 66%, grain-Se by 21%, and grain-Mo by 63%, but increased grain-Cd by 64% in Zhe 733, a straighthead resistant cultivar, while in MSMA-amended soil, intermittent flooding decreased grain-As by 63% and grain-Mo by 44% but increased grain-Se by 68% and grain-Cd by three times. For all other five cultivars, intermittent flooding generally decreased grain-As and grain-Mo but increased grain-Se and grain-Cd. Zhe 733 cultivar resulted in the lowest grain concentrations of all trace elements in all water treatments. A negative grain As-Se correlation and a positive grain As-Mo correlation were significant but not the As-Cd correlation. This research showed that the uptake of As, Se, Mo, and Cd by rice grain occurred as a complex function of multiple variables, including cultivar type and soil chemistry. As a result, accumulation of As and other trace elements in rice grain may be controlled by selecting appropriate cultivars and adopting appropriate water management practices.

Abstract Background This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of applying carbon nanoparticles (CNs) to visualize clip-marked metastatic nodes in combination with indocyanine green (ICG) and methylene blue (MB) as sentinel lymph node (SLN) tracers for targeted axillary dissection (TAD) after neoadjuvant therapy (NAT). Methods This feasibility trial enrolled 40 patients with node-positive breast cancer, and 38 patients completed NAT and surgery were included in the final analysis. Before NAT or surgery, clip-marked nodes were localized with CNs by ultrasonography. After NAT, the clip-marked nodes were removed under the guidance of carbon-tattooing and confirmed by radiography. SLNs were mapped with ICG and MB. Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) was performed for all patients after TAD. Results The clip-marked nodes were retrieved in all patients. The SLN identification rate was 100%. 29 of 38 clipped-nodes were SLNs. The false-negative rate was 6.25% (2/32,95% CI:1.09% ~ 22.22%) for TAD nodes and 9.38% (3/32,95% CI 3.24%-24.22%) for SLNs, and 18.75% for clipped-nodes (6/32, 95% CI:7.86% ~ 37.04%). No adverse events were reported during clip placement, CNs localization, or the TAD procedure. Conclusions The TAD procedure with CNs to locate and visualize clipped nodes as well as SLN tracing with ICG and MB has good accessibility in China, and this technique could be easily mastered by experienced surgeons. The modified TAD technique has also demonstrated good predictive ability for residual axillary lesions after NAT, and is worth of further evaluation.

An important feature of Nyberg-Rueppel type digital signature algorithms is message recovery, this signature algorithm can recover the original information from the signature directly by the verifier in the verification phase after signing the message. However, this algorithm is currently vulnerable to quantum attacks and its security cannot be guaranteed. Number Theory Research Unit (NTRU) is an efficient public-key cryptosystem and is considered to be one of the best quantum-resistant encryption schemes. This paper proposes an NTRU-like message recoverable signature algorithm to meet the key agreement requirements in the post-quantum world. This algorithm, designed for the Internet of Things (IoT), constructs a secure system using the Group-Based Message Recoverable Signature Algorithm (NR-GTRU), by integrating a Group-Based NTRU-Like Public-Key Cryptosystem (GTRU) with an efficient Nyberg-Rueppel type of NTRU digital signature algorithm (NR-NTRU). This signature algorithm, resistant to quantum algorithm attacks, offers higher security at the cost of a slight efficiency reduction compared to traditional NTRU signature algorithms, and features Nyberg-Rueppel message recovery, making it well-suited for IoT applications.

AbstractInhalable messenger RNA (mRNA) has demonstrated great potential in therapy and vaccine development to confront various lung diseases. However, few gene vectors could overcome the airway mucus and intracellular barriers for successful pulmonary mRNA delivery. Apart from the low pulmonary gene delivery efficiency, nonnegligible toxicity is another common problem that impedes the clinical application of many non-viral vectors. PEGylated cationic peptide-based mRNA delivery vector is a prospective approach to enhance the pulmonary delivery efficacy and safety of aerosolized mRNA by oral inhalation administration. In this study, different lengths of hydrophilic PEG chains were covalently linked to an amphiphilic, water-soluble pH-responsive peptide, and the peptide/mRNA nano self-assemblies were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The in vitro mRNA binding and release, cellular uptake, transfection, and cytotoxicity were studied, and finally, a proper PEGylated peptide with enhanced pulmonary mRNA delivery efficiency and improved safety in mice was identified. These results showed that a proper N-terminus PEGylation strategy using 12-monomer linear monodisperse PEG could significantly improve the mRNA transfection efficiency and biocompatibility of the non-PEGylated cationic peptide carrier, while a longer PEG chain modification adversely decreased the cellular uptake and transfection on A549 and HepG2 cells, emphasizing the importance of a proper PEG chain length selection. Moreover, the optimized PEGylated peptide showed a significantly enhanced mRNA pulmonary delivery efficiency and ameliorated safety profiles over the non-PEGylated peptide and LipofectamineTM 2000 in mice. Our results reveal that the PEGylated peptide could be a promising mRNA delivery vector candidate for inhaled mRNA vaccines and therapeutic applications for the prevention and treatment of different respiratory diseases in the future.

Abstract The distribution networks have more frequent and fast voltage fluctuations with the large‐scale access of distributed energy resources and electric vehicles. Based on remote terminal unit (RTU) and distribution terminal unit (DTU), traditional hierarchical control methods are difficult to achieve rapid global coordinated voltage regulation due to static modeling. For this purpose, this paper proposes an integrated dynamic voltage control strategy which integrates the objectives of local voltage control and secondary voltage control. First, simplified dynamic models of controllable equipment in active distribution network are established instead of the static models. On this basis, the state‐space prediction model of the control system is established. Then, based on the improved model predictive control (IMPC), the integrated dynamic voltage control strategy realizes rapid and global coordinated control through state prediction, rolling optimization and real‐time feedback correction. Numerical results show that the proposed strategy can achieve fast global coordinated voltage control in the time scale of seconds.

Abstract Protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) offer promising paths for energy storage and conversion. Despite considerable achievements made, PCECs still face challenges such as physiochemical compatibility between componenets and suboptimal solid–solid contact at the interfaces between the electrolytes and electrodes. In this study, a novel approach is proposed that combines in situ electrochemical characterization of interfacial electrical sensor embedded PCECs and machine learning to quantify the contributions of different cell components to total degradation, as well as to predict the remaining useful life. The experimental results suggest that the overpotential induced by the oxygen electrode is 48% less than that of oxygen electrode/electrolyte interfacial contact for up to 1171 h. The data‐driven machine learning simulation predicts the RUL of up to 2132 h. The root cause of degradation is overpotential increase induced by oxygen electrode, which accounts for 82.9% of total cell degradation. The success of the failure diagnostic model is demonstrated by its consistency with degradation modes that do not manifest in electrolysis fade during early real operations. This synergistic approach provides valuable insights into practical failure diagnosis of PCECs and has the potential to revolutionize their development by enabling improved performance prediction and material selection for enhanced durability and efficiency.

Abstract Background Indocyanine green (ICG) is becoming a frequently used sentinel lymph node (SLN) tracer of breast cancer in China. However, there is still a lack of data on its safety. We reported the clinical outcome of ICG as a tracer of SLN over a median 67-month follow-up period to evaluate its feasibility in clinically node-negative patients with breast cancer. Methods A total of 194 consecutive patients underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) with ICG, radioisotopes (RI) and methylene blue (MB), or with ICG and MB. The SLN mapping data by each tracer was recorded, and safety outcomes were analyzed through follow-up. Results With the triad mapping (N = 44), the identification rate of SLN by ICG was 95.5%, slightly higher than that of MB (86.4%) and comparable with RI (95.5%) and combined methods (95.5%, 100%) (p = 0.068). Analysis of all candidates (N = 194) demonstrated that the identification rate of SLN by ICG or by ICG and MB was 99%, significantly higher than that by MB (92.8%) (p < 0.0001). No tracer-related allergic reaction and permanent skin staining of ICG were observed. Local disease progression was reported in 2 of the 194 patients at the ipsilateral axilla. After remedial axillary lymph node dissection, no disease progression was detected at follow-up. Conclusions ICG as an SLN tracer is more accurate than MB and comparable to the combined methods and has good clinical safety. ICG can be considered a useful supplement or suitable alternative to traditional tracers.

Owing to the advantages of simple structure, low power consumption and high-density integration, memristors or memristive devices are attracting increasing attention in the fields such as next generation non-volatile memories, neuromorphic computation and data encryption. However, the deposition of memristive films often requires expensive equipment, strict vacuum conditions, high energy consumption, and extended processing times. In contrast, electrochemical anodizing can produce metal oxide films quickly (e.g. 10 s) under ambient conditions. By means of the anodizing technique, oxide films, oxide nanotubes, nanowires and nanodots can be fabricated to prepare memristors. Oxide film thickness, nanostructures, defect concentrations, etc, can be varied to regulate device performances by adjusting oxidation parameters such as voltage, current and time. Thus memristors fabricated by the anodic oxidation technique can achieve high device consistency, low variation, and ultrahigh yield rate. This article provides a comprehensive review of the research progress in the field of anodic oxidation assisted fabrication of memristors. Firstly, the principle of anodic oxidation is introduced; then, different types of memristors produced by anodic oxidation and their applications are presented; finally, features and challenges of anodic oxidation for memristor production are elaborated.

China's convenience food industry is developing rapidly. In recent years, the development of new product standards for convenience food has been continuously strengthened. Besides the approved industry standards such as “convenience dishes”, there are a number of industry standards currently being approved for development plan, which will effectively guide and standardize the industry's high-quality and healthy development. But on the whole, the product standard in this field needs to be revised and the product standard system needs to be further improved. By analyzing and interpreting the current standards and the standard system and the main contents of the newly formulated standards, this paper sorts out the main problems in the formulation and implementation of the standards, and puts forward the direction and suggestions for the construction of the standard system and its future revision, to facilitate the food industry’s product research and development, production and supervision to provide a technical basis.

Background: More than half of Chinese patients with hormone receptor positive (HR+) ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) are treated with mastectomy, and usually subjected to postoperative endocrine therapy (ET). Given that long-term ET can cause severe adverse effects it is important to determine the beneficial effect and safety of post-mastectomy ET on the disease-free survival (DFS) and adverse events in patients with HR+ DCIS. Methods: To explore beneficial effect and safety of post-mastectomy ET in patients with HR+ DCIS, we performed a multicenter, population-based study. This retrospective study analyzed the DFS and adverse events in 1037 HR+ DCIS Chinese patients with or without post-mastectomy ET from eight breast centers between 2006 and 2016. The median follow-up time period was 86 months. Results: There were 791 DCIS patients receiving ET (ET group). Those patients were followed up for a median of 86 months (range, 60–177 months). There were 23 cases with tumor recurrence or distant metastasis. There were similar 5-year DFS rates and DFS between the ET and non-ET groups, even for those with high-risk factors. Conversely, 37.04% of patients suffered from adverse events after ET, which were significantly higher than those in the non-ET group. Conclusions: ET after mastectomy did not benefit patients with HR+ DCIS for their DFS, rather increased adverse events in those patients. Therefore, ET after mastectomy may not be recommended for patients with HR+ DCIS, even for those with high-risk factors, such as multifocal, microinvasive, and higher T stage. In the history of human civilization, traditional villages and buildings have been significantly threatened by fire. As an essential part of Huizhou traditional architecture, fire seal walls play a crucial role in preserving Huizhou architecture by effectively blocking the spread of fire. However, with economic and social development, the Huizhou fire seal wall’s original fire prevention function has been unable to meet the needs of modern fire protection. This study aims to explore the fire performance of different types of Huizhou fire seal walls to provide a reference guide for future fire protection, optimization, and transformation of traditional buildings. In this paper, 3D models of traditional buildings with fire seal walls were built with FDS, and the performance of the different kinds of fire seal walls was simulated under the influence of wind speeds, building spacing, and the height of the vertical ridge of the fire seal wall. The results showed that, under the same conditions, a fire seal wall with a single eave is superior to fire seal walls with quintuple eaves in terms of performance, and fire seal walls with quintuple eaves are superior to fire seal walls with triple eaves in the middle and late stages of a fire. In addition, wind speeds, building spacing, and the height of the vertical ridge have different effects on the fire performance of seal walls. Lower wind speeds can reduce the fire performance of fire seal walls, and no wind and higher wind speeds have no significant effect on the fire performance of fire seal walls, while increasing the height of the vertical ridge and fire spacings appropriately can improve the fire performance of fire seal walls. This study provides a reference guide for future fire protection, optimization, and transformation of Huizhou fire seal walls, which can help improve the fire safety of traditional buildings.

Abstract Background Radical nephrectomy with thrombectomy is the mainstay treatment for patients with renal cell carcinoma with vena cava thrombus. But the procedure is full of challenge, with high incidence of major complications and mortality. Herein, we investigated the incidence and predictors of myocardial injury and acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients following radical nephrectomy with inferior vena cava thrombectomy. Methods Patients who underwent nephrectomy with thrombectomy between January 2012 and June 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Myocardial injury was diagnosed when peak cardiac troponin I was higher than 0.03 ng/ml. AKI was diagnosed according to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify predictors of myocardial injury or AKI after surgery. Results A total of 143 patients were included in the final analysis. Myocardial injury and AKI occurred in 37.8 and 42.7% of patients after this surgery, respectively. Male sex (odds ratio [OR] 0.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.10–0.71; P = 0.008) was associated with a lower risk, whereas high level Mayo classification (compared with Mayo level I + II, Mayo level III + IV: OR 4.21, 95% CI 1.42–12.4; P = 0.009), acute normovolemic hemodilution before surgery (OR 2.66, 95% CI 1.10–6.41; P = 0.029), long duration of intraoperative tachycardia (per 20 min: OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.10–2.16; P = 0.036), and long duration of surgery (per 1 h, OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.03–2.16, P = 0.009) were associated with a higher risk of myocardial injury. High body mass index (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.06–1.33; P = 0.004) and long duration of intraoperative hypotension (per 20 min: OR 1.30, 95% CI 1.04–1.64; P = 0.024) were associated with a higher risk, whereas selective renal artery embolism before surgery (OR 0.20, 95% CI 0.07–0.59, P = 0.004) was associated with a lower risk of AKI. Conclusion Myocardial injury and AKI were common in patients recovering from radical nephrectomy with inferior vena cava thrombectomy. Whether interventions targeting the above modifiable factors can improve outcomes require further studies.

Abstract A novel scalable four-step process has been developed to improve the synthesis of obeticholic acid (OCA). The key step of this process was the isolation of the amide intermediate, which underwent hydrogenation, basic epimerization, ketone reduction, and amide hydrolysis in a one-pot procedure. The use of efficient single recrystallization for the final purification in this process made the corresponding work-up procedure more concise and environmentally friendly. A kilogram-scale production of OCA following this process could achieve over 70% yield with all impurities controlled below 0.10%.
