Fibre metal laminates (FML) are the modern hybrid materials with potential wide range of applications in aerospace technology due to their excellent mechanical properties (particularly fatigue strength, resistance to impacts) and also excellent corrosion resistance. The study describes the resistance to low velocity impacts in Ti/CFRP laminates. Tested laminates were produced in autoclave process. The laminates were characterized in terms of their response to impacts in specified energy range (5J, 10J, 20J). The tests were performed in accordance with ASTM D7137 standard. The laminates were subjected to impacts by means of hemispherical impactor with diameter of 12,7 mm. The following values have been determined: impact force vs. time, maximum force and the force at which the material destruction process commences (Pi). It has been found that fibre titanium laminates are characterized by high resistance to impacts. This feature is associated with elasto-plastic properties of metal and high rigidity of epoxy - fibre composite. It has been observed that Ti/CFRP laminates are characterized by more instable force during impact in stage of stabilization of impactor-laminate system and stage of force growth that glass fibre laminates. It has been observed more stable force decrease in stage of stress relaxation and withdrawal of the impactor. In energy range under test, the laminates based on titanium with glass and carbon fibres reinforcement demonstrate similar and high resistance to low-velocity impact, measured by means of failure initiation force and impact maximum force.

An experimental analysis of mechanical behaviour for aluminium-based fibre metal laminates under compression after impact was conducted. Damage initiation and propagation were evaluated for critical state and force thresholds. Parametrization of laminates was done to compare their damage tolerance. Relatively low-energy impact had a marginal effect on fibre metal laminates compressive strength. Aluminium-glass laminate was more damage-resistant than one reinforced with carbon fibres (6% vs. 17% of compressive strength loss); however, aluminium-carbon laminate presented greater energy dissipation ability (around 30%). Significant damage propagation before the critical load was found (up to 100 times the initial damaged area). Damage propagation for assumed load thresholds was minor in comparison to the initial damage size. Metal plastic strain and delaminations are dominant failure modes for compression after impact.

The paper presents the issues of metal surface treatment in fibre metal laminates (FML) to obtain high adhesion at the metal-composite interface. Aluminium 2024-T3 and titanium Grade 2 were analysed. The metal surface modifications were carried out by mechanical (sandblasting, Scotch-Brite abrasion), chemical (P2 etching, phosphate-fluoride process), electrochemical (chromic and sulphuric acid anodizing), and plasma treatment, as well as the application of sol-gel coatings. In terms of surface geometry, the analysis included roughness and 3D surface topography examination. The morphology was examined using scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. The surface free energy and its components (polar and dispersive) were determined using the Owens-Wendt method. The novelty of this study is the determination of the effect of different surface treatments on the surface free energy, topography, and morphology in terms of the possible appropriate adhesion in fibre metal laminates. Chromic acid anodizing is still the most effective in enhancing the expected adhesion. A suitable technique may be the use of P2 etching of aluminium. It results in low roughness, numerous micro-irregularities, and the presence of porosity. The obtained test results show that the application of sol-gel coating increases the surface free energy and may increase the adhesion.

This paper focuses on the effects of transverse shear and root rotations in both symmetric and asymmetrical end-notched flexure (AENF) interlaminar fracture toughness tests. A theoretical model is developed, whereas the test specimen is subdivided into four regions joined by a rigid interface. The differential equations for the deflection and rotations of each region are solved within both the Euler-Bernoulli simple beam theory (SBT) and the more refined Timoshenko beam theory (TBT). A concise analytical equation is derived for the AENF deflection profile, compliance, and transverse shearing forces as a function of the specimen geometry, stacking sequence, delamination length, and fixture span. Modeling results are compared with numerical finite element analyses, obtaining a very good agreement. Performed analyses suggest that even in the case of symmetrical and unidirectional laminates considered as pure mode II fracture, a complex compression/tension and bending moment state is present, as well as a slight contribution of anti-planar shear at the vicinity of the crack tip.

This article presents selected aspects of an interlaminar shear strength and failure analysis of hybrid fiber metal laminates (FMLs) consisting of alternating layers of a 2024-T3 aluminium alloy and carbon fiber reinforced polymer. Particular attention is paid to the properties of the hybrid FMLs with an additional interlayer of glass composite at the metal-composite interface. The influence of hygrothermal conditioning, the interlaminar shear strength (short beam shear test), and the failure mode were investigated and discussed. It was found that fiber metal laminates can be classified as a material with significantly less adsorption than in the case of conventional composites. Introducing an additional layer of glass composite at the metal-composite interface and hygrothermal conditioning influence the decrease in the interlaminar shear strength. The major forms of damage to the laminates are delaminations in the layer of the carbon composite, at the metal-composite interface, and delaminations between the layers of glass and carbon composites.

The purpose of the work was the effect of metal volume fraction of fiber metal laminates on damage after dynamic loads based upon the example of innovative hybrid titanium-carbon composite laminates. The subject of the study was metal-fiber hybrid titanium-carbon composite laminates. Four types of hybrid titanium-carbon laminates were designed with various metal volume fraction coefficient but constant thickness. Based on the results, it can be stated that changes in the metal volume fraction coefficient in the range of 0.375-0.6 in constant thickness titanium-carbon composite laminates do not significantly affect their resistance to impacts in the energy range of 5-45 J. It was concluded that there were no significant differences in maximum force values, total contact time, and damage range. Some tendency towards a reduction in the energy accumulation capacity was observed with an increase in thickness of the metal part in relation to the total thickness of the laminate, especially in the lower impact energy range. This can result in the lower bending stiffness of laminates with lower metal content and potential elastic strain of the composite part before the initiation of the fiber damage process.

Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) were initially developed under the motivation of the aerospace industry. Generally, they consist of aluminum and high strength glass fiber in polymeric layers, but the new challenge is to apply them with a carbon fiber. Pretreatment of aluminum is the main factor responsible for the adhesion between metallic and polymeric layers. The shear strength test a very popular method in the experimental joint of two components. In this article, the main aim was to compare the surface pretreatment and configuration of fibers in FMLs based on aluminum with glass and carbon fibers. Interrelationships between morphological, densitometric, and mechanical properties of deciduous mandibular teeth (incisors, canine, second premolar) were investigated. To perform morphometric, densitometric, and mechanical analyses, teeth were obtained from 5-month-old sheep. Measurements of mean volumetric tooth mineral density and total tooth volume were performed using quantitative computed tomography. Microcomputed tomography was used to measure total enamel volume, volumetric enamel mineral density, total dentin volume, and volumetric dentin mineral density. Maximum elastic strength and ultimate force of teeth were determined using 3-point bending and compression tests. Pearson correlation coefficients were determined between all investigated variables. Mutual dependence was observed between morphological and mechanical properties of the investigated teeth. The highest number of positive correlations of the investigated parameters was stated in first incisor indicating its superior predictive value of tooth quality and masticatory organ function in sheep. Positive correlations of the volumetric dentin mineral density in second premolar with final body weight may indicate predictive value of this parameter in relation with growth rate in sheep. Evaluation of deciduous tooth properties may prove helpful for breeding selection and further reproduction of sheep possessing favorable traits of teeth and better masticatory organ function, leading to improved performance and economic efficiency of the flock.

The Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) process was investigated to enhance the adhesion of AA2024-O aluminum alloy with a polyetherimide (PEI) matrix composite, using oxy-fuel welding (OFW). A Central Composite Design (CCD) statistical model was used to optimize three independent parameters in PEO: immersion time (s), duty cycle (%), and electrolyte concentration (Na2B4O7·10H2O), aiming to achieve a maximum value of shear strength of the hybrid joint (in MPa). The hybrid joint without PEO treatment presented a resistance of 2.2 MPa while the best condition presented a resistance of 9.5 MPa, resulting in a value 4× higher than the untreated material, due to the characteristics of the coating, which presented a more hydrophilic surface, allowing better mechanical interlocking with the polymer matrix and resulting in mixed-mode failure (adhesive, cohesive, and light fiber). In addition to improving adhesion, the PEO treatment provided better corrosion resistance to the alloy, forming an inert aluminum oxide (Al2O3) coating, with an improvement of approximately 99.84% compared to the untreated alloy. Background: Caries, enamel hypoplasia, molar incisor hipomineralization, amylogenesis imperfecta, dentine dysplasia, hypophosphatasia and other dental disorders lead to tooth mineralization disturbances and structural abnormalities, decreasing masticatory organ functions. Dental disorders in sheep can lead to premature slaughter before they have attained final stage of their reproductive life and induce economic loss due to high flock replacement costs. Growth rate, health status and meat quality of sheep depends on tooth properties and quality determining in large extent efficiency of the masticatory apparatus and initial food break up. Considering lack of basic anatomical and physiological data on teeth properties in sheep, the aim of the study was to evaluate morphometric, densitometric and mechanical traits of deciduous mandibular incisor, canine and the second premolar obtained at the slaughter age of 5 months of life., Results: The obtained results have shown the highest values of weight, total tooth volume, enamel volume and dentine volume in second premolar. Morphometric and mechanical parameters of incisors reached the highest values in first incisor and decreased gradually in second and third incisor, and in canine. Densitometric measurements have not revealed significant differences of the volumetric tooth mineral density in hard dental tissues between the investigated teeth., Conclusions: In conclusion, proposed methodological approach is noninvasive since the deciduous teeth undergo physiological replacement with permanent teeth. Deciduous teeth can be easy collected for analyses from large animal population and may reflect mineral status and metabolism resulting from postnatal growth and development of the whole flock. In individual cases, evaluation of properties of deciduous teeth may serve for breeding selection and further reproduction of sheep possessing favorable traits of teeth and better masticatory system functions.

The epidemics of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) several decades ago and present epidemics of chronic wasting disease (CWD) among cervids posed a threat of cross-species infections to humans or other animals. Therefore, the question as to the molecular nature of the species barriers to transmissibility of prion diseases is very important. We approached this problem theoretically, first developing a model of template-monomer interaction based on logical and topological grounds and on experimental data about cross-seeding of PrP 23-144 protein orthologs. Further, we propose that the strength of the cross-seeding barriers is proportional to dissimilarity of key amyloidogenic regions of the proteins. This dissimilarity can be measured by dissimilarity function we propose. Scaled on experimental data, this function predicts if cross-seeding can occur between different variants of PrP23-144. The resemblance of PrP23-144 cross-seeding barriers to the barriers of cross-species transmissibility of prion diseases is discussed. We suggest that a similar theoretical approach could be applied to predicting the occurrence of species barriers of prion diseases at least in part corresponding to the process of multiplication of infectious agent.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of commercially pure CPTi and Ti6Al4V alloy with SiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 intermediate coatings to Triceram low-fusing dental porcelain., Methods: The multilayered systems were characterized from the standpoint of microstructure analysis (SEM), the mode of failure, the nature of bonding and the influence of intermediate coatings on the improvement of bond strength. The SiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 intermediate coatings were applied on the substrate materials by the sol-gel dipping technique. The metal-ceramic bond strength was investigated according to ISO 9693 standards using the three-point flexure bond test., Results: Statistically significant higher bond strength of the metal-porcelain for Ti6A14V alloy (28.24 MPa), Ti6Al4V/SiO2 (32.17 MPa) and Ti6Al4V/SiO2-TiO2 (36.09 MPa) was noted in comparison to CPTi (23.04 MPa), CPTi/SiO2 (27.98 MPa) and CPTi/SiO2-TiO2 (28.84 MPa), respectively. The nature of metal-intermediate coating-porcelain bonding was both mechanical and chemical. The failure in all systems was cohesive and adhesive, mainly adhesive., Significance: The application of SiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 intermediate coatings, produced by the sol-gel method, to both CPTi and Ti6Al4V alloy significantly improves the bond strength of metal-porcelain systems in comparison to the metal substrate only after sandblasting, and may have clinical use.

Thermoplastic composite organosheets (OSs) are increasingly recognized as a viable solution for automotive and aerospace structures, offering a range of benefits including cost-effectiveness through high-rate production, lightweight design, impact resistance, formability, and recyclability. This study examines the impact response, post-impact strength evaluation, and hot-pressing repair effectiveness of woven glass fiber nylon composite OSs across varying impact energy levels. Experimental investigations involved subjecting composite specimens to impact at varying energy levels using a drop-tower test rig, followed by compression-after-impact (CAI) tests. The results underscore the exceptional damage tolerance and improved residual compressive strength of the OSs compared to traditional thermoset composites. This enhancement was primarily attributed to the matrix's ductility, which mitigated transverse crack propagation and significantly increased the amount of absorbed energy. To mitigate impact-induced damage, a localized hot-pressing repair approach was developed. This allowed to restore the post-impact strength of the OSs to pristine levels for impact energies below 40 J and by 83.6% for higher impact energies, when OS perforation was observed. The measured levels of post-repair strength demonstrate a successful restoration of OS strength over a wide range of impact energies, and despite limitations in achieving complete strength recovery above 40 J, hot-pressing repair emerges as a promising strategy for ensuring the longevity of thermoplastic composites through repairability. This study unveils a machine learning (ML)-assisted framework designed to optimize the stacking sequence and orientation of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)/metal composite laminates, aiming to enhance their mechanical properties under quasi-static loading conditions. This work pioneers the expansion of initial datasets for ML analysis in the field by uniquely integrating the experimental results with finite element simulations. Nine ML models, including XGBoost and gradient boosting, were assessed for their precision in predicting tensile and bending strengths. The findings reveal that the XGBoost and gradient boosting models excel in tensile strength prediction due to their low error rates and high interpretability. In contrast, the decision trees, K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and random forest models show the highest accuracy in bending strength predictions. Tree-based models demonstrated exceptional performance across various metrics, notably for CFRP/DP590 laminates. Additionally, this study investigates the impact of layup sequences on mechanical properties, employing an innovative combination of ML, numerical, and experimental approaches. The novelty of this study lies in the first-time application of these ML models to the performance optimization of CFRP/metal composites and in providing a novel perspective through the comprehensive integration of experimental, numerical, and ML methods for composite material design and performance prediction. Fibre metal laminates (FMLs) are the most interesting composite materials of the past decade. They possess the properties of both polymer composites and metallic alloys. However, there is a problem with corrosion when the outer layers are made of aluminium or magnesium. The electrochemical changes that occur during the corrosion process and the mechanisms associated with the corrosion phenomenon are still being investigated. Recently, self-healing phenomena have emerged as a useful approach to prevent corrosion. However, there is limited research on the combination of FMLs and self-healing layers. Therefore, the main purpose of this article is to evaluate the self-healing ability of a magnesium/PEO layer based on microcapsules in a corrosion environment. It was observed that the corrosion mechanism in magnesium alloys is very complex. However, the use of a barrier layer with PEO treatment and microcapsules yielded positive anti-corrosion results. The FML samples were subjected to a 6-week corrosion test, and the addition of microcapsules to the layers showed positive results. In contrast, the samples without microcapsules exhibited intergranular corrosion. In the future, comprehensive tests using self-healing microcapsules in FMLs could greatly enhance their anti-corrosion properties and improve the integrity of the structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study looks at the mechanical and free vibration properties of glass laminated with functionalized aluminium reinforced epoxy. NaOH, K2Cr2O7, Fe2(SO4)3. XH2O, and C8H18O3Si were employed to functionalize aluminum. The flexural, impact, and shear strengths, as well as their failures, were investigated using electron microscope images. The impulsive hammer approach was applied to investigate laminate vibration behaviour. The results showed that the flexural strength (623.83 MPa), impact strength (76.41 J/mm2), and shear strength (55.31 MPa) of C8H18O3Si functionalized laminates outperformed those of other functionalized laminates. The improvement of mechanical properties was due to the change in interfacial adhesion. This is dependent on the functionalization of aluminium used in stacked laminates. Moreover, C8H18O3Si functionalized laminates exhibit a higher natural frequency and higher damping than other functionalized laminates. This natural frequency and damping are enhanced due to the strong mechanical interlocking between polymer and metal adhesion. Fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) are rapidly advancing materials that combine the characteristics of resin-based composites and metals. These properties can be further enhanced by incorporating nanoscale particles, resulting in a variant known as FMLs-Nano. This study explores the mechanical properties of FMLs with the incorporation of Graphene Oxide (GO) and investigates for the first time the influence of GO on bonding strength, aiming to improve the laminate's performance during the forming operation by eliminating delamination defects. The goal is to expand the potential applications of FMLs-Nano and enable the production of intricate components. To evaluate the influence of GO, we conducted tests on several mechanical aspects, including tensile strength, flexural performance, and lap shear strength. These tests involved using different GO fractions in the laminate. Microscopy was employed to examine damage patterns and understand failure behavior. Additionally, deep drawing experiments were performed and compared with conventional FMLs to evaluate the GO influence on delamination failure. The results indicate that FML-GO exhibits superior tensile performance compared to conventional FMLs, with FML-GO tensile strength and Young's modulus improved by 11.7% and 13.5%, respectively. Moreover, flexural and interface shear strength showed remarkable improvements, with an increase of 134% and 150% compared to conventional FMLs. These improvements were verified through mechanical testing and further confirmed by scanning electron microscope observations. The hybridization of natural and synthetic fibers is an alternate method to balance the performance and environmental friendliness of fiber metal laminates (FMLs). This research aims to fabricate hybrid aluminum (A)/ carbon fiber (C)/ pineapple leaf fiber (P) reinforced epoxy FMLs with different stacking sequences by the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) technique. The fabricated hybrid FMLs were subjected to tensile, flexural, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and water absorption tests. The tensile and flexural strength of hybrid A1 (ACPCA) surpassed those of non-hybrid AP (APPPA) by 252.77% and 165.08%, respectively. The thermal test shows that the hybrid FMLs A1 with higher CF content leads to better thermal stability than A2 (APCPA). In addition, from the water absorption test, the AP and A2 FMLs, with PALF as outer layers of core materials, absorbed moisture exceeding 6% after 10 weeks, compared to AC (ACCCA) and A1 with CF as outer layers of core materials, which only reached up to 2.88% and 4.22%, respectively. From this study, it is worth pointing out that the hybrid A1 showed comparable performance to non-hybrid AC. Thus, the appropriate hybridization of synthetic and natural fibers can broaden the scope of the practical application of FMLs with improved environmental friendliness in the automotive industry. Modern science and technology demand a low glass transition temperature, yet one tailored to specific thermoset needs and specific to individual hardener applications. Two novel, nonterminal liquid crystalline epoxy resins (LCER) were synthesised, with their structures characterized via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry (MS), and elemental analysis. Their liquid crystalline nature and thermal properties were determined using polarized optical microscopy (POM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A set of seven aromatic amines serving as curing agents was used to perform curing in fourteen different systems in order to assess the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the obtained polymer networks using DSC. The liquid crystalline elastomers were obtained with vitrification occurring in a low temperature range (−10–40 °C), with a more predictable outcome for amines with two aromatic rings in the structure than with one. Moreover, the resin with a core consisting of four aromatic rings produces networks with higher Tg than the three-aromatic resin. The use of nonterminal LCER allowed the lowering of the glass transition temperature of the polymers to more than 70 °C compared to a terminal analogue. This brings new possibilities of designing highly elastic yet cured polymers with potential for use in smart applications due to the LC nature of the resin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recycling of agro‐waste as complementary reinforcements has received significant recognition in the development of aluminium matrix composites. Hence, this study examines the corrosion behavior of Al6063 reinforced with hybrid SiC/PKSA (palm kernel shell ash) particles. Through various ratios of SiC and PKSA particles in Al6063 alloy, composites were fabricated by double stir casting. Samples were cut and metallographically prepared for 1 M H2SO4 solution corrosion experiments. Gravimetric, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analyses were employed. The composites corroded initially at relatively high rates, gradually declining during long immersion times in the acidic solution. The intersection of reinforcements at the general surfaces of the composites where flawed oxide skins predominate acted as active sites for corrosion initiation. From potentiodynamic polarization studies, the corrosion currents increased with time for all specimens, with A9 being 1075.65 μA/cm2 at 72 h as against 857.99 μA/cm2 at 24 h of measurement. The corrosion potentials for all the specimens hovered around −654.00 to −647.22 mV. Bode plots revealed similar electrochemical reactions over all the substrates' surfaces. The relative corrosion resistance by the specimen depends on the oxide films' nature as the cathodic interfacial reinforcements dropped off into the acidic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to compare the effects of using short and continuous fibres for repairing compression-induced tooth crown damage. Human teeth were used for the study. They were upper medial incisors and maxillary first premolars lost due to periodontal causes. The teeth were divided into two groups with Hahnenkratt and short glass fibres. Teeth compressive strength tests were carried out. Then micro-CT imaging of the teeth and their fractures obtained after compression was performed. The teeth restored with Hahnenkratt's glass fibre posts showed higher compressive strength than the teeth restored using the EverX Posterior material. The tooth's most weakened and sensitive point after endodontic treatment was the cervical area of the tooth. All cracks were parallel to the root canal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sandwich composites are often used as primary load-bearing structures in various industries like aviation, wind, and marine due to their high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, but they are vulnerable to damage from Low-velocity-impact (LVI) events like dropped tools, hail, and birdstrikes. This often manifests in the form of Facesheet-Core-Debonding (FCD) and is often termed Barely-Visible-Impact-Damage (BVID), which is difficult to detect and can considerably reduce mechanical properties. In general, a balsa core sandwich is especially vulnerable to FCD under LVI as it has poorer adhesion than synthetic core materials. A cork core sandwich does show promise in absorbing LVI with low permanent indentation depth. This paper also reviews surface treatment/modification as a means of improving the adhesion of composite core and fiber materials: key concepts involved, a comparison of surface free energies of various materials, and research literature on surface modification of cork, glass, and carbon fibers. Since both balsa and cork have a relatively low surface free energy compared to other materials, this paper concludes that it may be possible to use surface modification techniques to boost adhesion and thus FCD on balsa or cork sandwich composites under LVI, which has not been covered by existing research literature. This article reported a comprehensive review of computational modelling and analysis of fibre metal laminates (FMLs), including the experimental techniques. The research is relevant to the metal (aluminium) stacked in the advanced fibres (Glass/Carbon/Kevlar) reinforced with epoxy matrix, and composite behaviour is discussed in detail. The discussion also includes damages like delamination on the bonds' responses (frequency and static/dynamic deflections). The metal-bonded composite has shown tremendous potential in the transportation industries without increasing the weight penalties in the overall structure. This review focuses on recently devised technologies for making FML components, with brief overviews of other working parameters. A complete outline of the historical background and contemporary advances of FMLs includes the categories, sheet production procedures, benefits and drawbacks. Moreover, the forming technologies are discussed, indicating their promising options for the large-volume manufacturing of intricate shape components of FML. The fracture and flaws in the fabrications of FML, including the complexities available in the earlier studies, are surveyed comprehensively. Finally, state-of-the-art research on the numerical methodologies of the FML structural modelling using different theoretical approaches and experimental verifications is provided in detail. Pultruded GFRP (glass fiber-reinforced polymer) materials are widely used in structural engineering because of their lightweight, corrosion immunity, and electromagnetic transparency. However, the design of load-bearing components facing substantial compressive stresses, e.g., columns, must be more stringent than steel structures due to excessive deformability, material heterogeneity, and vulnerability to stress concentration. This manuscript investigates the failure performance of locally produced GFRP materials, focusing on the material heterogeneity effect on the mechanical resistance of a support joint of a pultruded tubular GFRP column. This experimental campaign employs relatively short rectangular profile fragments to isolate the support behavior and verify a simplified numerical finite element model, which neglects the nonlinearity of GFRP material. Even though several works are available on the analysis of low-velocity impact (LVI) on fibre metal laminates (FMLs), there is still scope for a better understanding of the complexities associated with their analysis, making it an important area of research. Therefore, it is essential to compile and present the state-of-the-art research in this area to make the critical information available in one paper, facilitating future research. This paper thus covers the detailed review of the articles published on the LVI response of fibre metal laminates (FMLs) based on experimental, numerical and analytical approaches and the associated damage mechanisms under different impact conditions. The discussions can be mainly categorized into two broad groups, namely geometrical and material-based parameters, which significantly influence the structural response of FMLs upon impact. Additionally, the paper compares various numerical techniques reported to model the impact behaviour of FMLs, along with an overview of analytical models. Based on the manufacturing techniques and material constituents of FMLs, the paper discusses feasible methods of improving the performance of impact-prone structures. The exhaustive review of the literature finally concludes that there are scopes of investigating some of the important and relevant areas related to LVI of FMLs like the influence of relative mass of impactor and target and accurate determination of contact stiffness for accurate estimation of interface delamination. Fiber–metal laminates (FMLs) are hybrid materials that provide the advantages of both metal and fiber-reinforced polymer composite (FRP) such as improved damage tolerance and impact strength, particularly in aerospace and automotive applications. However, the production of FMLs remains expensive because the manufacturing process is performed in an autoclave. In addition, delamination failure due to low interfacial adhesive strength between the metal and fiber layer is a problem that must be solved to improve the mechanical properties of FMLs. In this study, simple stitch-assisted carbon fiber-aluminum laminates were developed using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). The FMLs produced through vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding were stitched with aramid fibers through holes on Al sheets for the resin flow associated with the VARTM. The mechanical properties of the FMLs were investigated by impact and compression after impact tests as well as double cantilever beam and flexural tests. The stitching effectively improved the interfacial strength and toughness owing to the anchoring between the aluminum and carbon fiber layers, thus preventing delamination crack propagation. As a result, the stitched FML with significantly improved interfacial adhesive and toughness was developed by the VARTM process, which will accelerate the application of FML to various lightweight structures. As the use of composite laminates are unceasingly increasing more and more in many applications, the in-depth understanding about the impact response of composite laminates in certain areas like sport, aerospace and automotive has gained more attention of the designers and scientists over the last two decades. The authors have focused to review the impact properties of fibre reinforced composites particularly impact damage tolerance. Impact resistance, damage tolerance, composite failure and methods of assessing damage tolerance are presented. Furthermore, the approaches for improving damage tolerance such as fibre architectures resin system, and hybridisation using either yarn hybridisation or hybrid layers are discussed. In the end, a survey of modelling the impact damage of laminated composites is made by considering the inter-laminar and intra-laminar failures as key point for evaluating the response of laminates under impact loading. Cultivated natural fibers have a huge possibility for green and sustainable reinforcement for polymers, but their limited load-bearing ability and flammability prevent them from wide applications in composites. According to the beam theory, normal stress is the maximum at the outermost layers but zero at the mid-plane under bending (with (non)linear strain distribution). Shear stress is the maximum at the mid-plane but manageable for most polymers. Accordingly, a laminated composite made of hybrid fiber-reinforced shape memory photopolymer was developed, incorporating strong synthetic glass fibers over a weak core of natural hemp fibers. Even with a significant proportion of natural hemp fibers, the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites were close to those reinforced solely with glass fibers. The composites exhibited good shape memory properties, with at least 52% shape fixity ratio and 71% shape recovery ratio, and 24 MPa recovery stress. After 40 s burning, a hybrid composite still maintained 83.53% of its load carrying capacity. Therefore, in addition to largely maintaining the load carrying capacity through the hybrid reinforcement design, the use of shape memory photopolymer endowed a couple of new functionalities to the composites: the plastically deformed laminated composite beam can largely return to its original shape due to the shape memory effect of the polymer matrix, and the flame retardancy of the polymer matrix makes the flammable hemp fiber survive the fire hazard. The findings of this study present exciting prospects for utilizing low-strength and flammable natural fibers in multifunctional load-bearing composites that possess both flame retardancy and shape memory properties. Nowadays, in the automation and aircraft industries, there is a challenge in minimizing the weight of components of vehicles without losing the original properties. In this study, we fabricate hybrid composites based on fiber metal laminates; these materials could be promising composites for high-performance applications. This work is focused on analyzing the effect of high temperature (175 °C) on the mechanical properties of these kind of materials, by introducing NaOH and silane adhesion treatments between metal and prepreg layers and by using vacuum molding processes. Fabricated FML (NaOH treatment) shows a significant improvement in tensile strength in comparison with the ARALL and GLARE reported by ESA. Moreover, developed FMLs at 175 °C kept more than 70% of their tensile strength and modulus and kept 4% of tensile strain at room temperature. The prominent conclusion achieved in this work has been that excellent candidates have been obtained for a wide range of applications, including but not limited to space and aerospace applications. Novel materials such as fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) have demonstrated significant potential in a variety of applications. They must contend with problems such fatigue, creep, high-speed projectile impact, and deformation at high strain rates while in use. When employed as structural materials in aircraft, especially when exposed to shock wave impact and high velocity impact, fiber-metal laminates' high strain rate characteristics become crucial. Shock impedance matching is a revolutionary approach used for shock-tuning the separate layers. The novelty of the current work is in developing custom shielding laminates, with in-depth analysis on the response of the shock impedance tuning of individual layers on the laminate behaviour at high strain rates. In the current study, five stackups of FMLs comprising metallic (AA 6061-T6) and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plies, were formulated, incorporating shock impedance matching. The fiber-polymer plies used in the FMLs include ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), p-aramid for supplementing the impact resistance. Transmission loss functions (TL) estimated from the impedance tube experiments were used to indicate the shock tuning of the various laminates. The laminates underwent testing using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus to determine their properties at high strain rates ( 350 s - 1 to 460 s - 1 ). The variation in the Shock Energy (SE) absorbed by the laminates at various strain rates was analyzed as a function of the corresponding Transmission Loss employing regression. The dynamic stress-strain curves showed an increase in shock energy absorption at higher strain rates.
