1. Response of a Kerr black hole to a generic tidal perturbation

Abstract

We derive the response of non-extremal as well as extremal Kerr black holes (BHs) to generic tidal perturbations. The real part of the tidal response provides the tidal Love numbers (TLNs). Our results suggest that the static as well as dynamical (linear-in-frequency) TLNs vanish for both Schwarzschild and slowly rotating Kerr BHs, under generic perturbations. The vanishing of static and dynamical TLNs also holds for axi-symmetric tidal perturbations of non-extremal and extremal Kerr BHs. In fact, even under generic tidal perturbations the static TLNs of non-extremal and extremal Kerr BHs vanish identically. The only case where TLNs do not vanish is when they are dynamical and arise in response to generic tidal perturbations of non-extremal and extremal Kerr BHs. We also discuss the symmetries of the non-zero dynamical TLNs for both non-extremal and extremal Kerr BHs, under the change of sign of the spin, for electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations., Comment: 34 pages, 2 figures

2. Scalar tidal response of a rotating BTZ black hole

Abstract

We study the response of a rotating BTZ black hole to the scalar tidal perturbation. We show that the real component of the tidal response function isn't zero, indicating that a rotating BTZ black hole possesses non-zero tidal Love numbers. Additionally, we observe scale-dependent behaviour, known as log-running, in the tidal response function. We also conduct a separate analysis on an extremal rotating BTZ black hole, finding qualitative similarities with its non-extremal counterpart. Abstract

We find the dynamical tidal response of a Kerr black hole (BH) and demonstrate its tidal Love numbers to be non-vanishing when present in a non-axisymmetric external tidal field. To leading order, they depend quadratically on the black hole spin and linearly on the mode frequency. This implies that Kerr BHs are deformable under certain external, time-dependent perturbations. Since non-vanishing tidal Love numbers have been used in compact binary coalescences observed by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) Collaboration to infer their non-BH nature, our findings have important implications on such inferences from future gravitational wave observations., Comment: 15 pages (with supplemental material), 1 figure

4. Addressing issues in defining the Love numbers for black holes

Abstract

We present an analytic method for calculating the tidal response function of a nonrotating and a slowly rotating black hole from the Teukolsky equation in the small-frequency and near horizon limit. We point out that in the relativistic context, there can be two possible definitions of the tidal Love numbers and the dissipative part that arises from the tidal response function. Our results suggest that both of these definitions predict zero tidal Love numbers for a nonrotating black hole. On the other hand, for a slowly rotating black hole in a generic tidal environment, these two definitions of the tidal Love numbers do not coincide. While one procedure suggests zero tidal Love numbers, the other procedure gives purely imaginary tidal Love numbers. As expected, the dissipative terms differ as well. We emphasize that in our analysis, we keep all the terms linear in the frequency, unlike previous works in the literature. Following this, we propose a procedure to calculate the tidal response function -- and hence the Love numbers -- for an arbitrarily rotating black hole., Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure

5. Analog Raychaudhuri equation in mechanics

Abstract

Usually, in mechanics, we obtain the trajectory of a particle in a given force field by solving Newton's second law with chosen initial conditions. In contrast, through our work here, we first demonstrate how one may analyse the behaviour of a suitably defined family of trajectories of a given mechanical system. Such an approach leads us to develop a mechanics analog following the well-known Raychaudhuri equation largely studied in Riemannian geometry and general relativity. The idea of geodesic focusing, which is more familiar to a relativist, appears to be analogous to the meeting of trajectories of a mechanical system within a finite time. Applying our general results to the case of simple pendula, we obtain relevant quantitative consequences. Thereafter, we set up and perform a straightforward experiment based on a system with two pendula. The experimental results on this system are found to tally well with our proposed theoretical model. In summary, the simple theory, as well as the related experiment, provides us with a way to understand the essence of a fairly involved concept in advanced physics from an elementary standpoint., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, to appear in Resonance, Journal of Science Education (Indian Academy of Sciences)

15. The Angular Correction Algorithm for the Intercalibration of Satellite Instruments Using CLARREO Pathfinder as a Reference

Abstract

The Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity (CLARREO) Pathfinder (CPF) mission will take Système Internationale (SI)-traceable spectral reflectance measurements of Earth at an unprecedented accuracy of 0.3% ( ${k}$ = 1). CPF will also take measurements to support intercalibration of other satellite-based sensors. To achieve the desired intercalibration methodology uncertainty of 0.3% ( $k$ = 1), the CPF intercalibration measurements need to closely match those from target sensors in time, space, angles, and wavelength. This article introduces an innovative angular correction method to significantly reduce errors due to angular mismatches between CPF and target sensor measurements. The method leverages the spectral correlations among the reflected solar (RS) radiances from the same surface target at two adjacent angles. Our studies have shown that the spectral radiance or reflectance difference measured at angles slightly deviating from the CPF observation angles can be accurately predicted based on the hyperspectral CPF measurements. The method will serve as part of the operational algorithms to support the core mission goal of conducting intercalibration analysis with measurements from the shortwave channel of the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiance Energy System (CERES) and the reflective solar bands of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS); however, it can also be extended for other reference-target intercalibration applications.

Abstract

This article is the ninth in the series of Fungal Diversity Notes, where 107 taxa distributed in three phyla, nine classes, 31 orders and 57 families are described and illustrated. Taxa described in the present study include 12 new genera, 74 new species, three new combinations, two reference specimens, a re-circumscription of the epitype, and 15 records of sexual-asexual morph connections, new hosts and new geographical distributions. Twelve new genera comprise Brunneofusispora, Brunneomurispora, Liua, Lonicericola, Neoeutypella, Paratrimmatostroma, Parazalerion, Proliferophorum, Pseudoastrosphaeriellopsis, Septomelanconiella, Velebitea and Vicosamyces. 24. Consideration of temperature-dependent emissivity of selective emitters in thermophotovoltaic systems

Abstract

Spectral emissivity control is paramount for designing a high-efficiency selective emitter surface required for thermophotovoltaic (TPV) applications. Owing to the temperature dependency of materials optical constants, the spectral properties of a selective emitter surface changes with the emitter temperature. This paper presents the fabrication of a multilayer metal-dielectric (Si_3N_4/W/Si_3N_4) coated tungsten selective emitter aimed for GaSb-based TPV systems and studies the dependence of its surface spectral emissivity, ε(λ), upon a temperature ranging from 300 K to 1500 K. Both the simulation and experimental methods were used to characterize ε(λ) as a function of temperature. For wavelengths less than 1.4 µm, ε(λ) was found to have a minimal dependence on temperature. Beyond 1.4 µm, ε(λ) increases with the temperature. At 1.55 µm, the simulation and experimental data estimated a ∼4% greater emissivity at 1500 K than at room temperature. At 1500 K, the increased ε(λ) at longer wavelengths lowered the spectral conversion efficiency of the selective emitter from 58% to 47%. The output power density, sub-bandgap loss, and TPV conversion efficiency (η_TPV) for a GaSb cell illuminated by the selective thermal emitter at 1500 K were estimated. η_TPV drops from 13.7% to 11% due to the increased sub-bandgap emission at 1500 K. Essential approaches for mitigating the sub-bandgap losses to further improve η_TPV are also discussed.

25. A new species of Bondarzewia(Russulales) from Indian Himalaya

Abstract

Bondarzewia indohimalayana, a species collected from mixed temperate forest of Uttarakhand Himalaya in northern India, is proposed here as new to science. This mushroom is characterized by zonate pilei with different shades of brown, pale yellow margin with reddish tinge, irregular pores, thick context that turns pink to dark red with guaiacol, clavate to cylindrical basidia and narrow subconical to winged warts of basidiospores. The present communication deals with the morphological details and a combined (nrITS and nrLSU) phylogeny of this undescribed species. Its relation to allied (Asian and extralimital) species is discussed and a provisional key to the species ofBondarzewiais presented.

Abstract: In this paper, the problem of robust absolute stability of Lurie system with probabilistic time-varying delay and norm-bounded parametric uncertainty is considered. The time delay variation range is divided into two subintervals. By considering the probability distribution of the time-varying delay between the two subintervals and the knowledge of the delay variation range, a novel linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) based stability condition is derived by defining a Lyapunov Krasovskii functional. It is illustrated with the help of numerical examples that the derived stability criteria can lead to less conservative results as compared to the results obtained by the traditional method of using the delay variation range information only. Abstract

In this paper, a novel stability criterion for the absolute stability of neutral type Lurie system with unbounded distributed and interval time-varying delay is proposed. The delay range is divided into two segments for stability analysis. The probability distribution of interval time-varying delay in the two segments is assumed to be known a priori. A tighter bounding technique is developed for the integral terms arising in the derivative of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF). This bounding technique along with the Wirtinger inequality is used to develop the absolute stability criteria in terms of linear matrix inequalities. The proposed stability analysis has been further extended to the robust absolute stability of uncertain Lurie system of neutral type with mixed delays. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been illustrated through numerical examples.

Abstract

Background: Discoveries of new species often depend on one or a few specimens, leading to delays as researchers wait for additional context, sometimes for decades. There is currently little professional incentive for a single expert to publish a stand-alone species description. Additionally, while many journals accept taxonomic descriptions, even specialist journals expect insights beyond the descriptive work itself. The combination of these factors exacerbates the issue that only a small fraction of marine species are known and new discoveries are described at a slow pace, while they face increasing threats from accelerating global change. To tackle this challenge, this first compilation of Ocean Species Discoveries (OSD) presents a new collaborative framework to accelerate the description and naming of marine invertebrate taxa that can be extended across all phyla. Through a mode of publication that can be speedy, taxonomy-focused and generate higher citation rates, OSD aims to create an attractive home for single species descriptions. This Senckenberg Ocean Species Alliance (SOSA) approach emphasises thorough, but compact species descriptions and diagnoses, with supporting illustrations and with molecular data when available. Even basic species descriptions carry key data for distributions and ecological interactions (e.g., host-parasite relationships) besides universally valid species names; these are essential for downstream uses, such as conservation assessments and communicating biodiversity to the broader public. New information: This paper presents thirteen marine invertebrate taxa, comprising one new genus, eleven new species and one re-description and reinstatement, covering wide taxonomic, geographic, bathymetric and ecological ranges. The taxa addressed herein span three phyla (Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata), five classes, eight orders and twelve families. Apart from the new genus, an updated generic diagnosis is provided for four other genera. The newly-described species of the phylum Mollusca are Placiphorella methanophila Vončina, sp. nov. (Polyplacophora, Mopaliidae), Lepetodrilus marianae Chen, Watanabe & Tsuda, sp. nov. (Gastropoda, Lepetodrilidae), Shinkailepas gigas Chen, Watanabe & Tsuda, sp. nov. (Gastropoda, Phenacolepadidae) and Lyonsiella illaesa Machado & Sigwart, sp. nov. (Bivalvia, Lyonsiellidae). The new taxa of the phylum Arthropoda are all members of the subphylum Crustacea: Lepechinella naces Lörz & Engel, sp. nov. (Amphipoda, Lepechinellidae), Cuniculomaera grata Tandberg & Jażdżewska, gen. et sp. nov. (Amphipoda, Maeridae), Pseudionella pumulaensis Williams & Landschoff, sp. nov. (Isopoda, Bopyridae), Mastigoniscus minimus Wenz, Knauber & Riehl, sp. nov. (Isopoda, Haploniscidae), Macrostylis papandreas Jonannsen, Riehl & Brandt, sp. nov. (Isopoda, Macrostylidae), Austroniscus indobathyasellus Kaiser, Kniesz & Kihara, sp. nov. (Isopoda, Nannoniscidae) and Apseudopsis daria Esquete & Tato, sp. nov. (Tanaidacea, Apseudidae). In the phylum Echinodermata, the reinstated species is Psychropotes buglossa E. Perrier, 1886 (Holothuroidea, Psychropotidae). The study areas span the North and Central Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the North, East and West Pacific Ocean and depths from 5.2 m to 7081 m. Specimens of eleven free-living and one parasite species were collected from habitats ranging from an estuary to deep-sea trenches. The species were illustrated with photographs, line drawings, micro-computed tomography, confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images. Molecular data are included for nine species and four species include a molecular diagnosis in addition to their morphological diagnosis. The five new geographic and bathymetric distribution records comprise Lepechinella naces Lörz & Engel, sp. nov., Cuniculomaera grata Tandberg & Jażdżewska, sp. nov., Pseudionella pumulaensis Williams & Landschoff, sp. nov., Austroniscus indobathyasellus Kaiser, Kniesz & Kihara, sp. nov. and Psychropotes buglossa E. Perrier, 1886, with the novelty spanning from the species to the family level.
