Percutaneous closure of the left atrial appendage may be indicated in patients with contraindications to anticoagulation therapy, for example, after recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding. It is an effective and safe procedure but is not without complications. The collapse of the Fundão dam (Southeast, Brazil) on November 5, 2015, released about 60 million m3 of iron ore tailings into the Doce River Basin (DRB), causing environmental impacts and social impacts. Two sediment cores were collected in August 2017 in the Doce River Mouth (DRM) to evaluate the environmental disaster using organic geochemical markers, including concentrations of n-alkanes and their respective δ13Cn-alk values, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and sterols as well as bulk parameters (TOC, NT, and grain size distribution). N-alkane concentrations (n-C27 to n-C33) ranged from 119.9 to 922.6 µg g−1 TOC, PAHs ranged from 149.8 to 1103.5 ng g−1, and sterols ranged from 79.5 to 505.9 µg g−1 TOC for all samples. The vertical distribution and δ13Cn-alk of n-alkanes indicated an increase in terrestrial organic matter (OM) contribution with depth from higher plants, grasses, and herbaceous plants. There is no evidence that autochthonous production of OM occurred with the arrival of the tailings. PAHs showed moderate pyrolytic (fossil fuel and biomass combustion) contamination with a predominance of high molecular weight (HMW) compounds such as benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene (IP). Fecal sterol concentrations indicated that the surface sediment layers of the cores had a lower sewage signal than before the Fundão dam disaster, i.e., a dilution of sewage probably occurred by the tailings. Our study shows that the tailings arrival at the DRM changed the composition of OM sedimentation by carrying different organic compounds along the tailing route into the river channel. In this study, the multi-marker approach was used for the first time with a highly urbanized lake located in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil, to provide a comprehensive view of temporal trends in sources of pollutants and evaluate the relation between the influence of anthropogenic activities and socioeconomic development. Total concentrations of the markers analyzed ranged from 21.0 to 103.8 ng g−1, 450.2 to 2390.2 ng g−1, and 233.8 to 9827.3 ng g−1 for ∑PAHs, ∑n-alk, and ∑sterols, respectively. Concentrations and patterns of PAH, AH, and sterol ratio distribution changed over time and may be associated with different episodes in the history of the city of Fortaleza. The marker ratio distribution in the sediment core revealed an overlap of natural and anthropogenic sources, with degraded oil, biogenic inputs, pyrogenic processes, and fecal contamination from humans and animals in the past changing to petroleum fossil inputs and high contamination from sewage in the present day. The distribution of markers and the chronological history of Fortaleza revealed two distinct periods related to human activities during the development of the city. In the first period (prior to the 1950s), the main human activities were animal breeding and the use of biomass for domestic activities, public and cargo transportation, and commercial activities, especially food production. In the second period (after the 1950s), expansion of the city occurred due to the so-called Brazilian economic miracle and the main human activities were industrialization and urbanization processes, involving deforestation, paving, sewage discharge, and petroleum combustion. In this study, the hydrocarbons (HCs) levels in sediments from Lagoa Mirim, situated in the south of Brazil, were verified. The methodology brought together stages of pre-sonification, soxhlet extraction, and determination by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Ten sample points were evaluated where ∑n-alkanes varied between 1.46 µg kg−1 ± 4.0% and 10.10 µg kg−1 ± 17.6%. Diagnostic indexes were calculated, being: Carbon Preferential Index (CPI), terrestrial/aquatic ratio (TAR), unresolved complex mixture (UCM), UCM/∑n-alkanes ratio, and n-alkane ratio with Low molecular weight hydrocarbon and High molecular weight hydrocarbons (HMW/LMW). The distribution, seasonal variation and sources of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) from suspended particulate matter (SPM) of the Aurá River, a small amazon typical river located in Northern Brazil, were determined. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of SPM revealed a mixture of PAH from different origins and a seasonal variation of PAH primary source for the studied area. Pyrene was the dominant PAH in both studied periods. Total PAH content (ΣPAH) ranged from lower than quantification limit (< LOQ) to 2498.2 ng g−1 dw during the dry season and < LOQ to 2865.8 ng g−1 dw during the wet season. Low molecular weight PAH (LMW) represented 51% of ΣPAH during the dry season and 29% during the wet season. It was noted, by comparing previous data, that the main source of these compounds was altered after the deactivation of an irregular landfill next to the river. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Piauí-Real estuary is located along the southern coast of Sergipe state, Northeast Brazil. This estuary has great economic importance due to its physical, biological, and socioeconomic diversity, but it is subject to anthropogenic stress since the resident population in the town bordered by the estuarine system has grown in recent years. Thus, the possibility of sewage contamination originating from the approximately 450,000 inhabitants living within its drainage basin was investigated in this study. Sediment samples were collected from 15 sampling stations along the estuarine system and extracted, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Six sterols were quantified, indicating natural and anthropogenic sources. Coprostanol concentrations higher than 100 ng g were observed in 47 % of the stations analyzed, indicating sewage contamination, which was confirmed by the diagnostic ratios calculated. Based on the Pearson correlation test, a significant correlation between coprostanol concentrations and total organic carbon content (TOC) was observed, indicating that sterols record the history of sewage inputs in this area. The named 'green chemistry' has been receiving increasing prominence due to its environmentally friendly characteristics. The use of enzymes as catalysts in processes of synthesis to replace the traditional use of chemical catalysts present as main advantage the fact of following the principles of the green chemistry. However, processes of enzymatic nature generally provide lower yields when compared to the conventional chemical processes. Therefore, in the last years, the ultrasound has been extensively used in enzymatic processes, such as the production of esters with desirable characteristics for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food industry, for the hydrolysis and glycerolysis of vegetable oils, production of biodiesel, etc. Several works found in the open literature suggest that the energy released by the ultrasound during the cavitation phenomena can be used to enhance mass transfer (substrate/enzyme), hence increasing the rate of products formation, and also contributing to enhance the enzyme catalytic activity. Furthermore, the ultrasound is considered a 'green' technology due to its high efficiency, low instrumental requirement and significant reduction of the processing time in comparison to other techniques. The main goal of this review was to summarize studies available to date regarding the application of ultrasound in enzyme-catalyzed esterification, hydrolysis, glycerolysis and transesterification reactions. A procedure for the alkaline pretreatment of sisal fiber assisted by ultrasound was optimized to obtain a higher solubilization of hemicellulose and the removal of lignin with cellulose fraction maintenance. A full factorial design 23 was used for the evaluation of the effects of the variables (sonication time, NaOH concentration, and sonication amplitude) on the pretreatment. The optimal values for the variables using the Doehlert matrix for the sonication time, NaOH concentration, and sonication amplitude were 27 min, 4.1% (m/v), and 50%, respectively. The X‐ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy analyses, after pretreatment, showed changes in chemical structure and morphology due to the removal of 82% of hemicellulose and 86% of lignin from sisal fiber. The soft reaction conditions and relatively short times demonstrated the effectiveness of the combined action of ultrasound with alkaline pretreatment to improve the accessibility to cellulose in this important step of the ethanol production process from biomass.
