Precise developmental timing control is essential for organism formation and function, but its mechanisms are unclear. In C. elegans, the microRNA lin-4 critically regulates developmental timing by post-transcriptionally downregulating the larval-stage-fate controller LIN-14. However, the mechanisms triggering the activation of lin-4 expression toward the end of the first larval stage remain unknown. We demonstrate that the transmembrane transcription factor MYRF-1 is necessary for lin-4 activation. MYRF-1 is initially localized on the cell membrane, and its increased cleavage and nuclear accumulation coincide with lin-4 expression timing. MYRF-1 regulates lin-4 expression cell-autonomously and hyperactive MYRF-1 can prematurely drive lin-4 expression in embryos and young first-stage larvae. The tandem lin-4 promoter DNA recruits MYRF-1GFP to form visible loci in the nucleus, suggesting that MYRF-1 directly binds to the lin-4 promoter. Our findings identify a crucial link in understanding developmental timing regulation and establish MYRF-1 as a key regulator of lin-4 expression.

Atmospheric CH4 is the second-largest anthropogenic contributor to global warming. However, its emissions, components, spatial–temporal variations and projected changes still remain largely uncertain from city to national scales. CH4 emissions from waste treatment (including solid waste landfills, solid waste incineration and sewage) account for >50 % of total anthropogenic CH4 emissions at the city scale, and considering the high temperature sensitivity of CH4 emission factors (EFs) to biological-process-based sources such as waste treatment, large differences will occur when estimating future CH4 emissions under different global warming scenarios. Furthermore, the relationships between temperature and waste treatment CH4 emissions have only been studied in a few site-specific studies and lack representativity for whole cities, which contain various biophysical conditions and show heterogeneous distribution. The above factors cause uncertainty in the evaluation of city-scale CH4 emissions (especially from waste treatments), and projected changes still remain unexplored. Here we conduct the first tower-based CH4 observation network with three sites in Hangzhou, which is located in the developed Yangtze River Delta (YRD) area and ranks as one of the largest megacities in China. We found the a priori total annual anthropogenic CH4 emissions and those from waste treatment were overestimated by 36.0 % and 47.1 % in Hangzhou, respectively. In contrast, the total emissions in the larger region, i.e., Zhejiang Province or the YRD area, were slightly underestimated by 7.0 %. Emissions from waste treatment showed obvious seasonal patterns following air temperature. By using the linear relationship constructed between monthly waste treatment CH4 emissions and air temperature, we find the waste treatment EFs increase by 38 %–50 % with temperature increases of 10 ∘C. Together with projected temperature changes from four climate change scenarios, the global-warming-induced EFs in Hangzhou will increase at the rates of 2.2 %, 1.2 %, 0.7 % and 0.5 % per decade for IPCC AR5 (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Fifth Assessment Report) RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) 8.5, RCP6.0, RCP4.5 and RCP2.6 scenarios, respectively. And the EFs will finally increase by 17.6 %, 9.6 %, 5.6 % and 4.0 % at the end of this century. Additionally, the derived relative changes in China also show high heterogeneity and indicate large uncertainty in projecting future national total CH4 emissions. Hence, we strongly suggest temperature-dependent EFs and the positive feedback between global warming and CH4 emissions should be considered in future CH4 emission projections and climate change models.

Toxoplasma gondii is an apicomplexan parasite that causes fatal and debilitating brain and eye disease. Endochinlike quinolones (ELQs) are preclinical compounds that are efficacious against apicomplexan-caused diseases, including toxoplasmosis, malaria, and babesiosis. Of the ELQs, ELQ-316 has demonstrated the greatest efficacy against acute and chronic experimental toxoplasmosis. Although genetic analyses in other organisms have highlighted the importance of the cytochrome bc 1 complex Q i site for ELQ sensitivity, the mechanism of action of ELQs against T. gondii and the specific mechanism of ELQ-316 remain unknown. Here, we describe the selection and genetic characterization of T. gondii clones resistant to ELQ-316. A T. gondii strain selected under ELQ-316 drug pressure was found to possess a Thr222-Pro amino acid substitution that confers 49-fold resistance to ELQ-316 and 19-fold resistance to antimycin, a well-characterized Q i site inhibitor. These findings provide further evidence for ELQ Q i site inhibition in T. gondii and greater insight into the interactions of Q i site inhibitors with the apicomplexan cytochrome bc 1 complex., (Copyright © 2017 American Society for Microbiology.)

Summary: Metastasis is the leading cause of high ovarian-cancer-related mortality worldwide. Three major processes constitute the whole metastatic cascade: invasion, intravasation, and extravasation. Tumor cells often reprogram their metabolism to gain advantages in proliferation and survival. However, whether and how those metabolic alterations contribute to the invasiveness of tumor cells has yet to be fully understood. Here we performed a genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 screening to identify genes participating in tumor cell dissemination and revealed that PTGES3 acts as an invasion suppressor in ovarian cancer. Mechanistically, PTGES3 binds to phosphofructokinase, liver type (PFKL) and generates a local source of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) to allosterically inhibit the enzymatic activity of PFKL. Repressed PFKL leads to downgraded glycolysis and the subsequent TCA cycle for glucose metabolism. However, ovarian cancer suppresses the expression of PTGES3 and disrupts the PTGES3-PGE2-PFKL inhibitory axis, leading to hyperactivation of glucose oxidation, eventually facilitating ovarian cancer cell motility and invasiveness.

High-spin states in neutron-rich indium isotope 116In have been observed for the first time by using incomplete fusion of 7Li on a 116Cd target at a beam energy of 42 MeV. A negative-parity band with πg9/2−1⊗νh11/2 configuration and a pair of positive-parity doublet bands with πg9/2−1⊗ν(g7/2/d5/2)h11/22 configurations have been identified. The positive-parity doublet bands are tentatively interpreted as chiral doublet bands, which is supported by the adiabatic and configuration-fixed constrained triaxial relativistic-mean-field and multiparticle plus rotor model calculations. This observation reports a possible new region of chirality in neutron-rich A≈ 120 mass region.

The Toeplitz matrix reconstruction algorithms exploit the row vector of an array output covariance matrix to reconstruct Toeplitz matrix, which provide the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of coherent signals. However, the Toeplitz matrix reconstruction method based on any row vector of the array output covariance matrix suffers from signal correlation, it results in poor robustness. The methods based on multi-row vectors suffer serious performance degradation when in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) owing to the noise energy is the square of the input noise energy. To solve the above problems, we propose an improved method that exploits all rows of the time-space correlation matrix to reconstruct the Toeplitz matrix, namely TS-MTOEP. This method firstly uses the coherence of the narrowband signal and the uncorrelated noise at different snapshots to construct the time-space correlation matrix, it effectively eliminates the influence of noise. Then, the Toeplitz matrix is reconstructed via all rows of the time-space correlation matrix, which effectively improves the energy of the signal, and further results in the improvement of the SNR. Finally, the DOAs can be obtained by combining it with the subspace-based methods. The theoretical analysis and simulation results indicate that compared with the existing Toeplitz and spatial smoothing methods, the proposed method in this paper provides good performance on estimation and resolution in cases with low input signal-to-noise due to time-space correlation matrix processing. Furthermore, in cases where the DOAs between the coherent sources are closely spaced and the snapshot number is low, our proposed method significantly improves the performance of the DOA estimation. We also provide the code to realize the reproducibility of the proposed method.

Level lifetimes for the candidate chiral doublet bands of 80Br were extracted by means of the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The absolute transition probabilities derived from the lifetimes agree well with the M1 and E2 chiral electromagnetic selection rules, and are well reproduced by the triaxial particle rotor model calculations. Such good agreements among the experimental data, selection rules of chiral doublet bands and theoretical calculations are rare and outstanding in researches of nuclear chirality. Besides odd-odd Cs isotopes, odd-odd Br isotopes in the A≈ 80 mass region represent another territory that exhibits the ideal selection rules expected for chiral doublet bands.

Nearly degenerate positive-parity doublet bands and several E1 transitions between positive- and negative-parity bands have been identified in 76Br. These experimental observations are interpreted as the coexistence of chirality and octupole correlations, based on the analysis of detailed γ-ray spectroscopy with the precise lifetime measurements and theoretical calculations, and play a key role to explore the simultaneous breaking of chiral and reflection symmetry and their interplay. The present work provides the first test for chirality in the A≈80 mass region by lifetime measurements, and firstly elucidates the formation of chiral geometry in the presence of the octupole correlations in Br isotopes, leading to the conclusion that the reflection symmetry breaking catalyzes rather than destroys chiral symmetry breaking in nuclear systems.

The analysis of mixing ratios δ of the ΔI =1 linking transitions in the chiral and multiple chiral doublet bands with the ideal case are theoretically performed for the first time by employing the quantum particle rotor model. The calculated E2 fraction extracted from the mixing ratio show that the ΔI =1 linking transitions in the lowest and excited chiral doublet bands are of the pure M1 character, while those connecting the excited to lowest chiral doublet bands are of M1/E2 character with a relatively large E2 admixture. The further analysis of the angular momentum geometry and azimuthal plots reveals that the excited chiral doublet bands represents a chiral geometry with a wobbling motion of the core. This provides a possible figure of wobbling motion in multiple chiral doublets.

Complex aerosol and photochemical pollution (ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate, PAN) frequently occur in eastern China, and mitigation strategies to effectively alleviate both kinds of pollution are urgently needed. Although the effectiveness of powerful control measures implemented by the Chinese State Council has been comprehensively evaluated in terms of reducing atmospheric primary pollutants, the effectiveness in mitigating photochemical pollution is less assessed and therefore the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. The stringent emission controls implemented from 24 August to 6 September 2016 during the summit for the Group of Twenty (G20) provide us a unique opportunity to address this issue. Surface concentrations of atmospheric O3, PAN, and their precursors including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen dioxides (NOx), in addition to the other trace gases and particulate matter, were measured at the National Reference Climatological Station (NRCS) (30.22∘ N, 120.17∘ E, 41.7 m a.s.l) in urban Hangzhou. We found significant decreases in atmospheric PAN, NOx, total VOCs, PM2.5, and sulfur dioxide (SO2) under the unfavorable meteorological conditions during G20 (DG20) relative to the adjacent period before and after G20 (BG20 and AG20), indicating that the powerful control measures were effective in reducing the pollutant emissions in Hangzhou. Unlike with the other pollutants, daily maximum 8 h average (DMA8) O3 exhibited a slight increase and then decrease from BG20 to AG20, which was mainly attributed to the variation in the solar irradiation intensity and regional transport in addition to the contribution from the implementation of stringent control measures. Results from an observation-based chemical model (OBM) indicated that acetaldehyde and methylglyoxal (MGLY) were the most important second-generation precursors of PAN, accounting for 37.3 %–51.6 % and 22.8 %–29.5 % of the total production rates including the reactions of OVOCs, propagation of other radicals, and other minor sources. Moreover, we confirmed the production of PAN and O3 was sensitive to VOCs throughout the whole period, specifically dominated by aromatics in BG20 and DG20 but by alkenes in AG20. These findings suggested that reducing emissions of aromatics, alkenes, and alkanes would mitigate photochemical pollution including PAN and O3. Source appointment results attributed the reductions of VOC source and ozone formation potentials (OFPs) during G20 to the effective emission controls on traffic (vehicle exhaust) and industrial processes (solvent utilization and industrial manufacturing). However, fuel combustion and biogenic emissions both weakened such an effect with a sizable contribution to the VOC mixing ratios (18.8 % and 20.9 %) and OFPs (25.6 % and 17.8 %), especially during the latter part of G20 (G20 II) when anthropogenic VOCs were substantially reduced. This study highlights the effectiveness of stringent emission controls in relation to traffic and industrial sources, but a coordinated program related to controlling fuel combustion and biogenic emissions is also required to address secondary pollution.

Two nearly degenerate positive-parity bands with the πg9/22⊗νg9/2−1 configuration and three nearly degenerate negative-parity bands with the πg9/2(p3/2,f5/2)⊗νg9/2−1 configuration have been identified in 81Kr. They are interpreted as chiral doublet bands and pseudospin-chiral triplet bands, which is supported by the constrained covariant density functional theory and the multiparticle plus rotor model calculations. The present work reports two new chiral configurations πg9/22⊗νg9/2−1 and πg9/2(p3/2,f5/2)⊗νg9/2−1, and the first example of pseudospin-chiral triplet bands involving the π(p3/2,f5/2) pseudospin doublet.

Multi-year observations of aerosol microphysical and optical properties, obtained through ground-based remote sensing at 50 China Aerosol Remote Sensing Network (CARSNET) sites, were used to characterize the aerosol climatology for representative remote, rural, and urban areas over China to assess effects on climate. The annual mean effective radii for total particles (ReffT) decreased from north to south and from rural to urban sites, and high total particle volumes were found at the urban sites. The aerosol optical depth at 440 nm (AOD440 nm) increased from remote and rural sites (0.12) to urban sites (0.79), and the extinction Ångström exponent (EAE440–870 nm) increased from 0.71 at the arid and semi-arid sites to 1.15 at the urban sites, presumably due to anthropogenic emissions. Single-scattering albedo (SSA440 nm) ranged from 0.88 to 0.92, indicating slightly to strongly absorbing aerosols. Absorption AOD440 nm values were 0.01 at the remote sites versus 0.07 at the urban sites. The average direct aerosol radiative effect (DARE) at the bottom of atmosphere increased from the sites in the remote areas (−24.40 W m−2) to the urban areas (−103.28 W m−2), indicating increased cooling at the latter. The DARE for the top of the atmosphere increased from −4.79 W m−2 at the remote sites to −30.05 W m−2 at the urban sites, indicating overall cooling effects for the Earth–atmosphere system. A classification method based on SSA440 nm, fine-mode fraction (FMF), and EAE440–870 nm showed that coarse-mode particles (mainly dust) were dominant at the rural sites near the northwestern deserts, while light-absorbing, fine-mode particles were important at most urban sites. This study will be important for understanding aerosol climate effects and regional environmental pollution, and the results will provide useful information for satellite validation and the improvement of climate modelling.

Neural circuits develop through a plastic phase orchestrated by genetic programs and environmental signals. We have identified a leucine-rich-repeat domain transmembrane protein PAN-1 as a factor required for synaptic rewiring in C. elegans. PAN-1 localizes on cell membrane and binds with MYRF, a membrane-bound transcription factor indispensable for promoting synaptic rewiring. Full-length MYRF was known to undergo self-cleavage on ER membrane and release its transcriptional N-terminal fragment in cultured cells. We surprisingly find that MYRF trafficking to cell membrane before cleavage is pivotal for C. elegans development and the timing of N-MYRF release coincides with the onset of synaptic rewiring. On cell membrane PAN-1 and MYRF interact with each other via their extracellular regions. Loss of PAN-1 abolishes MYRF cell membrane localization, consequently blocking myrf-dependent neuronal rewiring process. Thus, through interactions with a cooperating factor on the cell membrane, MYRF may link cell surface activities to transcriptional cascades required for development.

The climatological variation of aerosol properties and the planetary boundary layer (PBL) during 2013–2015 over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region were investigated by employing ground-based Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL) and CE-318 sun-photometer observations. Combining Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) satellite products, enhanced haze pollution events affected by different types of aerosol over the YRD region were analyzed through vertical structures, spatial distributions, backward trajectories, and the potential source contribution function (PSCF) model. The results show that aerosols in the YRD are dominated by fine-mode particles, except in March. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) in June and September is higher due to high single scattering albedo (SSA) from hygroscopic growth, but it is lower in July and August due to wet deposition from precipitation. The PBL height (PBLH) is greater (means ranging from 1.23 to 1.84 km) and more variable in the warmer months of March to August, due to the stronger diurnal cycle and exchange of heat. Northern fine-mode pollutants are brought to the YRD at a height of 1.5 km. The SSA increases, blocking the radiation to the surface, and cooling the surface, thereby weakening turbulence, lowering the PBL, and in turn accelerating the accumulation of pollutants, creating a feedback to the cooling effect. Originated from the deserts in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, long-range transported dust masses are seen at heights of about 2 km over the YRD region with an SSA440 nm below 0.84, which heat air and raise the PBL, accelerating the diffusion of dust particles. Regional transport from biomass-burning spots to the south of the YRD region bring mixed aerosol particles at a height below 1.5 km, resulting in an SSA440 nm below 0.89. During the winter, the accumulation of the local emission layer is facilitated by stable weather conditions, staying within the PBL even below 0.5 km.

The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) is one of the most densely populated regions in China with severe air quality issues that have not been fully understood. Thus, in this study, based on 1-year (2013) continuous measurement at a National Reference Climatological Station (NRCS, 30.22° N, 120.17° E; 41.7 m a.s.l.) in the center of Hangzhou in the YRD, we investigated the seasonal characteristics, interspecies relationships, and the local emissions and the regional potential source contributions of trace gases (including O3, NOx, NOy, SO2, and CO) and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10). Results revealed that severe two-tier air pollution (photochemical and haze pollution) occurred in this region, with frequent exceedances in O3 (38 days) and PM2.5 (62 days). O3 and PM2.5 both exhibited distinct seasonal variations with reversed patterns: O3 reaching a maximum in warm seasons (May and July) but PM2.5 reaching a maximum in cold seasons (November to January). The overall results from interspecies correlation indicated a strong local photochemistry favoring the O3 production under a volatile organic compound (VOC)-limited regime, whereas it moved towards an optimum O3 production zone during warm seasons, accompanied by the formation of secondary fine particulates under high O3. The emission maps of PM2.5, CO, NOx, and SO2 demonstrated that local emissions were significant for these species on a seasonal scale. The contributions from the regional transport among inland cities (Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Jiangxi Province) on a seasonal scale were further confirmed to be crucial to air pollution at the NRCS site by using backward trajectory simulations. Air masses transported from the offshore areas of the Yellow Sea, East Sea, and South Sea were also found to be highly relevant to the elevated O3 at the NRCS site through the analysis of potential source contribution function (PSCF). Case studies of photochemical pollution (O3) and haze (PM2.5) episodes both suggested the combined importance of local atmospheric photochemistry and synoptic conditions during the accumulation (related with anticyclones) and dilution process (related with cyclones). Apart from supplementing a general picture of the air pollution state in the city of Hangzhou in the YRD region, this study specifically elucidates the role of local emission and regional transport, and it interprets the physical and photochemical processes during haze and photochemical pollution episodes. Moreover, this work suggests that cross-regional control measures are crucial to improve air quality in the YRD region, and it further emphasizes the importance of local thermally induced circulation for air quality.

In this paper, we obtain the Euler-Lagrange equations for different kind of variational problems with the Lagrangian function containing the Riesz-Hilfer fractional derivative. Since the Riesz-Hilfer fractional derivative is a generalization for the Riesz-Riemann-Liouville and the Riesz-Caputo derivative, then our results generalize many recent works in which the Lagrangian function involving the Riesz-Riemann-Liouville or the Riesz-Caputo derivative. We also study the problem in the presence of delay derivatives and establish a version for Noether theorem in the Riesz-Hilfer sense. In order to achieve our aims we derive some formulas to integration by parts for the Riesz-Hilfer fractional derivative. In the last section, examples are given to clarify the possibility of applicability of our results. In order to clarify the significant conclusions of the paper, we refer to our techniques enable to study many different variational problems containing the Riesz-Hilfer derivative. Aerosol pollution in eastern China is an unfortunate consequence of the region's rapid economic and industrial growth. Here, sun photometer measurements from seven sites in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) from 2011 to 2015 were used to characterize the climatology of aerosol microphysical and optical properties, calculate direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF) and classify the aerosols based on size and absorption. Bimodal size distributions were found throughout the year, but larger volumes and effective radii of fine-mode particles occurred in June and September due to hygroscopic growth and/or cloud processing. Increases in the fine-mode particles in June and September caused AOD440 nm > 1.00 at most sites, and annual mean AOD440 nm values of 0.71–0.76 were found at the urban sites and 0.68 at the rural site. Unlike northern China, the AOD440 nm was lower in July and August (∼ 0.40–0.60) than in January and February (0.71–0.89) due to particle dispersion associated with subtropical anticyclones in summer. Low volumes and large bandwidths of both fine-mode and coarse-mode aerosol size distributions occurred in July and August because of biomass burning. Single-scattering albedos at 440 nm (SSA440 nm) from 0.91 to 0.94 indicated particles with relatively strong to moderate absorption. Strongly absorbing particles from biomass burning with a significant SSA wavelength dependence were found in July and August at most sites, while coarse particles in March to May were mineral dust. Absorbing aerosols were distributed more or less homogeneously throughout the region with absorption aerosol optical depths at 440 nm ∼ 0.04–0.06, but inter-site differences in the absorption Angström exponent indicate a degree of spatial heterogeneity in particle composition. The annual mean DARF was −93 ± 44 to −79 ± 39 W m−2 at the Earth's surface and ∼ −40 W m−2 at the top of the atmosphere (for the solar zenith angle range of 50 to 80°) under cloud-free conditions. The fine mode composed a major contribution of the absorbing particles in the classification scheme based on SSA, fine-mode fraction and extinction Angström exponent. This study contributes to our understanding of aerosols and regional climate/air quality, and the results will be useful for validating satellite retrievals and for improving climate models and remote sensing algorithms.

Objective The objective of the present study was to determine whether mango saponin (MS) could be used as a feed additive in broiler chicks by evaluating growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, and plasma biochemical indices. Methods A total of 216 1-d-old Arbor Acres male broiler chicks were randomly assigned into three dietary treatments supplemented with 0 (control), 0.14% (MS 0.14%), or 0.28% (MS 0.28%) MS. Each treatment had six replicates (cages) with 12 chicks each. The feeding trial lasted for six weeks. Acetylcholine (ACh) receptors (AChR) regulate neural circuit activity in multiple contexts. In humans, mutations in ionotropic acetylcholine receptor (iAChR) genes can cause neurological disorders, including myasthenia gravis and epilepsy. In Caenorhabditis elegans, iAChRs play multiple roles in the locomotor circuit. The cholinergic motor neurons express an ACR-2-containing pentameric AChR (ACR-2R) comprised of ACR-2, ACR-3, ACR-12, UNC-38, and UNC-63 subunits. A gain-of-function mutation in the non-α subunit gene acr-2 [acr-2(gf)] causes defective locomotion as well as spontaneous convulsions. Previous studies of genetic suppressors of acr-2(gf) have provided insights into ACR-2R composition and assembly. Here, to further understand how the ACR-2R regulates neuronal activity, we expanded the suppressor screen for acr-2(gf)-induced convulsions. The majority of these suppressor mutations affect genes that play critical roles in synaptic transmission, including two novel mutations in the vesicular ACh transporter unc-17. In addition, we identified a role for a conserved major facilitator superfamily domain (MFSD) protein, mfsd-6, in regulating neural circuit activity. We further defined a role for the sphingosine (SPH) kinase (Sphk) sphk-1 in cholinergic neuron activity, independent of previously known signaling pathways. Overall, the genes identified in our study suggest that optimal modulation of synaptic activity is balanced by the differential activities of multiple pathways, and the novel alleles provide valuable reagents to further dissect neuronal mechanisms regulating the locomotor circuit.

Long-term measurements of aerosol optical depths (AODs) at 440 nm and Ångström exponents (AE) between 440 and 870 nm made for CARSNET were compiled into a climatology of aerosol optical properties for China. Quality-assured monthly mean AODs are presented for 50 sites representing remote, rural, and urban areas. AODs were 0.14, 0.34, 0.42, 0.54, and 0.74 at remote stations, rural/desert regions, the Loess Plateau, central and eastern China, and urban sites, respectively, and the corresponding AE values were 0.97, 0.55, 0.82, 1.19, and 1.05. AODs increased from north to south, with low values (< 0.20) over the Tibetan Plateau and northwestern China and high AODs (> 0.60) in central and eastern China where industrial emissions and anthropogenic activities were likely sources. AODs were 0.20–0.40 in semi-arid and arid regions and some background areas in northern and northeastern China. AEs were > 1.20 over the southern reaches of the Yangtze River and at clean sites in northeastern China. In the northwestern deserts and industrial parts of northeast China, AEs were lower (< 0.80) compared with central and eastern regions. Dust events in spring, hygroscopic particle growth during summer, and biomass burning contribute the high AODs, especially in northern and eastern China. The AODs show decreasing trends from 2006 to 2009 but increased ~ 0.03 per year from 2009 to 2013.

For pulverized coal pyrolysis process, it is important to separate the coal dust from coal pyrolysis gas to obtain pure coal tar gas. However, it is difficult to remove the coal dust efficiently at high temperature. A two-stage coal dust removal system which consists of a cyclone separator and a dual-layer granular bed filter has been developed. Semicoke is selected to be the filter media of granular bed filter, because after the filtration process the mixture of semicoke and coal dust can be directly burned for power generation and the regeneration process of filter granules can be eliminated. A series of experiments were conducted to study the performance of this dust removal system and the impacts of temperature and tar gas on this system. The experiment results showed that semicoke performs better than silica sand as filter media and the dual-layer granular bed filter is more effective than single layer granular bed filter in this experimental condition. The best combination of the dual-layer granular bed filter is a 10-cm-thick upper layer filled with 0.83~1.25 mm filter granules and a 5-cm-thick lower layer filled with 0.38~0.83 mm filter granules. The results of this study indicated that the whole system is capable of removing coal dust from the mixture of coal tar gas and nitrogen gas even at 723 K, efficiency reaching up to 99.95 %.

Graphene oxide (GO) sheets were chemically grafted with thermotropic liquid crystalline epoxy (TLCP). Then we fabricated composites using TLCP-g-GO as reinforcing filler. The mechanical properties and thermal properties of composites were systematically investigated. It is found that the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites are enhanced effectively by the addition of fillers. For instance, the composites containing 1.0 wt% of TLCP-g-GO present impact strength of 51.43 kJ/m2, the tensile strength of composites increase from 55.43 to 80.85 MPa, the flexural modulus of the composites increase by more than 48%. Furthermore, the incorporation of fillers is effective to improve the glass transition temperature and thermal stability of the composites. Therefore, the presence of the TLCP-g-GO in the epoxy matrix could make epoxy not only stronger but also tougher.

The ratio Φ=kHC+OH[HC]/kNOx+OH[NOx] is used as an indicator for the sensitivity of ozone production (P(O3)) to HC and NOx in the field campaign RISFEX 2003 (RIShiri Fall EXperiment 2003) at Rishiri Island (45.07° N, 141.12° E, and 35 m a.s.l.) in the sea of Japan during September 2003. Four different sensitivity regimes are obtained based on the indicator. The sensitivity is found to show a distinctive pattern in each regime. In Regime I (ΦP(O3) almost linearly increases with increasing HC and almost linearly decreases with increasing NOx. In Regime II (1P(O3) with HC and a less-than-linear decrease with NOx. P(O3) less-than-linearly increases with both HC and NOx in Regime III (9 ± 5x and is nearly constant with increasing HC in Regime IV (Φ>45 ± 7). During the campaign, 91 percent of P(O3) data appear in Regime III and IV, indicating that NOx is a limiting factor of ozone production. Hence, it may be an efficient strategy to control NOx emission for ozone abatement at the site. Comparisons between the observed P(O3) and the ones modelled have represented general agreement. However, the model tends to underestimate P(O3) in Regime II, implying that an important source of peroxy radicals is possibly missed. In Regime IV, the modelled P(O3) is systematically larger than the measured one under a low j(O1D) condition, which may be caused by the over-estimated yields of peroxy radicals from the reactions of monoterpenes with ozone. A budget analysis indicates that sensitivity of P(O3) is declining with HC and enhancing with NO when the condition shifts from Regime II to Regime IV, which is also observed through the analysis of P(O3) sensitivity using Φ. Sensitivity studies for P(O3) are conducted to determine the effect of NOx and monoterpenes on ozone production and the conclusions are very consistent with those derived from the indicator. This study demonstrates that the ratio Φ could be a useful index to ascertain the sensitivity of P(O3) to HC and NOx in the clean marine boundary layer.
