Search

Obtaining a burning plasma is a critical step towards self-sustaining fusion energy1. A burning plasma is one in which the fusion reactions themselves are the primary source of heating in the plasma, which is necessary to sustain and propagate the burn, enabling high energy gain. After decades of fusion research, here we achieve a burning-plasma state in the laboratory. These experiments were conducted at the US National Ignition Facility, a laser facility delivering up to 1.9 megajoules of energy in pulses with peak powers up to 500 terawatts. We use the lasers to generate X-rays in a radiation cavity to indirectly drive a fuel-containing capsule via the X-ray ablation pressure, which results in the implosion process compressing and heating the fuel via mechanical work. The burning-plasma state was created using a strategy to increase the spatial scale of the capsule2,3 through two different implosion concepts4–7. These experiments show fusion self-heating in excess of the mechanical work injected into the implosions, satisfying several burning-plasma metrics3,8. Additionally, we describe a subset of experiments that appear to have crossed the static self-heating boundary, where fusion heating surpasses the energy losses from radiation and conduction. These results provide an opportunity to study α-particle-dominated plasmas and burning-plasma physics in the laboratory.

In a burning plasma state1–7, alpha particles from deuterium–tritium fusion reactions redeposit their energy and are the dominant source of heating. This state has recently been achieved at the US National Ignition Facility8 using indirect-drive inertial-confinement fusion. Our experiments use a laser-generated radiation-filled cavity (a hohlraum) to spherically implode capsules containing deuterium and tritium fuel in a central hot spot where the fusion reactions occur. We have developed more efficient hohlraums to implode larger fusion targets compared with previous experiments9,10. This delivered more energy to the hot spot, whereas other parameters were optimized to maintain the high pressures required for inertial-confinement fusion. We also report improvements in implosion symmetry control by moving energy between the laser beams11–16 and designing advanced hohlraum geometry17 that allows for these larger implosions to be driven at the present laser energy and power capability of the National Ignition Facility. These design changes resulted in fusion powers of 1.5 petawatts, greater than the input power of the laser, and 170 kJ of fusion energy18,19. Radiation hydrodynamics simulations20,21 show energy deposition by alpha particles as the dominant term in the hot-spot energy balance, indicative of a burning plasma state.

The collisionless ion-Weibel instability is a leading candidate mechanism for the formation of collisionless shocks in many astrophysical systems, where the typical distance between particle collisions is much larger than the system size. Multiple laboratory experiments aimed at studying this process utilize laser-driven (I≳10^{15} W/cm^{2}), counterstreaming plasma flows (V≲2000 km/s) to create conditions unstable to Weibel-filamentation and growth. This technique intrinsically produces temporally varying plasma conditions at the midplane of the interaction where Weibel-driven B fields are generated and studied. Experiments discussed herein demonstrate robust formation of Weibel-driven B fields under multiple plasma conditions using CH, Al, and Cu plasmas. Linear theory based on benchmarked radiation-hydrodynamic FLASH calculations is compared with Fourier analyses of proton images taken ∼5-6 linear growth times into the evolution. The new analyses presented here indicate that the low-density, high-velocity plasma-conditions present during the first linear-growth time (∼300-500 ps) sets the spectral characteristics of Weibel filaments during the entire evolution. It is shown that the dominant wavelength (∼300μm) at saturation persists well into the nonlinear phase, consistent with theory under these experimental conditions. However, estimates of B-field strength, while difficult to determine accurately due to the path-integrated nature of proton imaging, are shown to be in the ∼10-30 T range, an order of magnitude above the expected saturation limit in homogenous plamas but consistent with enhanced B fields in the midplane due to temporally varying plasma conditions in experiments.

Astrophysical collisionless shocks are among the most powerful particle accelerators in the Universe. Generated by violent interactions of supersonic plasma flows with the interstellar medium, supernova remnant shocks are observed to amplify magnetic fields1 and accelerate electrons and protons to highly relativistic speeds2–4. In the well-established model of diffusive shock acceleration5, relativistic particles are accelerated by repeated shock crossings. However, this requires a separate mechanism that pre-accelerates particles to enable shock crossing. This is known as the ‘injection problem’, which is particularly relevant for electrons, and remains one of the most important puzzles in shock acceleration6. In most astrophysical shocks, the details of the shock structure cannot be directly resolved, making it challenging to identify the injection mechanism. Here we report results from laser-driven plasma flow experiments, and related simulations, that probe the formation of turbulent collisionless shocks in conditions relevant to young supernova remnants. We show that electrons can be effectively accelerated in a first-order Fermi process by small-scale turbulence produced within the shock transition to relativistic non-thermal energies, helping overcome the injection problem. Our observations provide new insight into electron injection at shocks and open the way for controlled laboratory studies of the physics underlying cosmic accelerators. In laser–plasma experiments complemented by simulations, electron acceleration is observed in turbulent collisionless shocks. This work clarifies the pre-acceleration to relativistic energies required for the onset of diffusive shock acceleration.

Laser propagation experiments using four beams of the National Ignition Facility to deliver up to 35 kJ of laser energy at 351 nm laser wavelength to heat magnetized liner inertial fusion-scale (1 cm-long), hydrocarbon-filled gas pipe targets to ∼keV electron temperatures have demonstrated energy coupling >20 kJ with essentially no backscatter in 15% critical electron density gas fills with 0–19 T applied axial magnetic fields. The energy coupling is also investigated for an electron density of 11.5% critical and for applied field strengths up to 24 T at both densities. This spans a range of Hall parameters 0 [Formula: see text]2, where a Hall parameter of 0.5 is expected to reduce electron thermal conduction across the field lines by a factor of 4–5 for the conditions of these experiments. At sufficiently high applied field strength (and therefore Hall parameter), the measured laser propagation speed through the targets increases in the measurements, consistent with reduced perpendicular electron thermal transport; this reduces the coupled energy to the target once the laser burns through the gas pipe. The results compare well with a 1D analytic propagation model for inverse Bremsstrahlung absorption.

We report on the experimental measurement of specular reflection (“glint”) of laser beams off the hohlraum wall in inertial confinement fusion experiments at the National Ignition Facility. In a hohlraum, glinted light can escape the opposite laser entrance hole of the hohlraum and is a potential laser energy loss mechanism. We present the first local, quantitative measurements of ion current filamentation and magnetic field amplification in interpenetrating plasmas, characterizing the dynamics of the ion Weibel instability. The interaction of a pair of laser-generated, counterpropagating, collisionless, supersonic plasma flows is probed using optical Thomson scattering (TS). Analysis of the TS ion-feature revealed anticorrelated modulations in the density of the two ion streams at the spatial scale of the ion skin depth $c/{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{pi}=120\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$, and a correlated modulation in the plasma current. The inferred current profile implies a magnetic field amplitude $\ensuremath{\sim}30\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}6\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}$, corresponding to $\ensuremath{\sim}1%$ of the flow kinetic energy, indicating that magnetic trapping is the dominant saturation mechanism.

A developing application of laser-driven currents is the generation of magnetic fields of picosecond–nanosecond duration with magnitudes exceeding $B=10~\text{T}$ . Single-loop and helical coil targets can direct laser-driven discharge currents along wires to generate spatially uniform, quasi-static magnetic fields on the millimetre scale. Here, we present proton deflectometry across two axes of a single-loop coil ranging from 1 to 2 mm in diameter. Comparison with proton tracking simulations shows that measured magnetic fields are the result of kiloampere currents in the coil and electric charges distributed around the coil target. Using this dual-axis platform for proton deflectometry, robust measurements can be made of the evolution of magnetic fields in a capacitor coil target.

This work discusses the development of x-ray and gamma-ray sources based on laser-wakefield acceleration (LWFA) in the self-modulated regime. These sources are developed for probing high energy density (HED) science experiments at large-scale laser facilities.

By driving hot electrons between two metal plates connected by a wire loop, high power lasers can generate multi-tesla, quasi-static magnetic fields in miniature coil targets. Many experiments involving laser-coil targets rely on proton deflectometry directed perpendicular to the coil axis to extract a measurement of the magnetic field. In this paper, we show that quantitative measurements using perpendicular probing are complicated by the presence of GV m−1 electric fields in the target that develop on sub-ns timescales. Probing parallel to the coil axis with fiducial grids is shown to reliably separate the electric and magnetic field measurements, giving current estimates of I ≈ 5 kA in 1 mm- and 2 mm-diameter wire loops. An analytic model of proton deflection in electric and magnetic fields is used to benchmark results from the particle-in-cell code and help deconvolve the magnetic and electric field deflections. Results are used to motivate a new experimental scheme that combines a single-plate target with axial proton probing and direct current measurements. This scheme has several important advantages over the traditional target and diagnostic set-up, enabling the robust measurement of coil magnetic fields and plasma properties, as well as making it easier to validate different theoretical models at a range of laser intensities.

The creation and disruption of inertially collimated plasma flows are investigated through experiment, simulation, and analytical modeling. Supersonic plasma jets are generated by laser-irradiated plastic cones and characterized by optical interferometry measurements. Targets are magnetized with a tunable $B$ field with strengths of up to 5 T directed along the axis of jet propagation. These experiments demonstrate a hitherto unobserved phenomenon in the laboratory, the magnetic disruption of inertially confined plasma jets. This occurs due to flux compression on axis during jet formation and can be described using a Lagrangian-cylinder model of plasma evolution implementing finite resistivity. The basic physical mechanisms driving the dynamics of these systems are described by this model and then compared with two-dimensional radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations. Experimental, computational, and analytical results discussed herein suggest that contemporary models underestimate the electrical conductivity necessary to drive the amount of flux compression needed to explain observations of jet disruption.

A new tri-particle mono-energetic backlighter based on laser-driven implosions of DT3He gas-filled capsules has been implemented at the OMEGA laser. This platform, an extension of the original D3He backlighter platform, generates 9.5 MeV deuterons from the T3He reaction in addition to 14.7 and 3.0 MeV protons from the deuterium and helium-3 reactants. The monoenergetic 14.7 and 3.0 MeV protons have been used with success at OMEGA and the NIF for both radiography and stopping-power studies. There are several advantages of having a third particle to diagnose plasma conditions: an extra time-of-flight-separated radiograph and an improved ability to discern between electric and magnetic fields. In cases where the 3.0 MeV protons cannot penetrate an experiment, the benefit of the additional 9.5 MeV deuterons is magnified. This capability is well-suited for NIF experiments, where large fields and plasma densities often preclude useful 3.0 MeV proton data. The advantages are demonstrated with radiographs of OMEGA plasmas with magnetic and electric fields. Tests using backlighter-scale 420 μm diameter thin glass capsules validate the platform’s extended backlighting capability. The performance characteristics of this backlighter, such as source size and timing, are discussed.

Diagnosing plasma magnetization in inertial confinement fusion implosions is important for understanding how magnetic fields affect implosion dynamics and to assess plasma conditions in magnetized implosion experiments. Secondary deuterium–tritium (DT) reactions provide two diagnostic signatures to infer neutron-averaged magnetization. Magnetically confining fusion tritons from deuterium–deuterium (DD) reactions in the hot spot increases their path lengths and energy loss, leading to an increase in the secondary DT reaction yield. In addition, the distribution of magnetically confined DD-triton is anisotropic, and this drives anisotropy in the secondary DT neutron spectra along different lines of sight. Implosion parameter space as well as sensitivity to the applied B-field, fuel ρR, temperature, and hot-spot shape will be examined using Monte Carlo and 2D radiation-magnetohydrodynamic simulations.

Experiments using a single 527 nm wavelength beam interacting with sub- and supercritical density SiO2 and Ta2O5 foams examined laser propagation and backscatter from laser–plasma instabilities such as Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). Two densities of each material were examined, and multiple diagnostics were used to characterize the propagation and backscatter. For 5 mg/cc SiO2 (ne/nc = 0.375), the laser propagation distance was well approximated by treating the foam as a gas. However, for the 2 mg/cc SiO2 foam (ne/nc = 0.15), the same model over-predicts the propagation distance by ∼40%. Existing analytical theories on propagation through subcritical foams were able to account for this difference. The laser heat wave propagated ∼1/2 as far in Ta2O5 than SiO2 foams with similar electron density. We showed that this difference is due to the increased radiation losses in the higher Z foam. The fraction of backscattered light scales linearly with incident laser intensity for the range of intensities examined. Ta2O5 foams had significantly lower levels of backscatter (1–3%) than the SiO2 (4–8%), which is consistent with estimates of large Landau damping due to the presence of the oxygen atoms. The measured fraction of SBS backscattered laser energy for a 2 mg/cc SiO2 foam shot was ∼4 times lower than predicted by simulations assuming a gas-like foam. We found that we needed to assume increased ion heating such that Ti/Te ∼ 1.2–1.5 in the plasma to agree with the measured SBS reflectivity. Analytical models of laser-heated foams predict preferential heating of the ions as has been observed in previous experiments.

Application of a magnetic field to an indirect drive inertial confinement fusion target requires diffusion of the field through the high-Z and electrically conducting Hohlraum. The onset of the external field generates eddy currents in the Hohlraum wall that result in (1) a reduction of the peak field at the capsule, (2) heating of the Hohlraum wall through Ohmic dissipation, and (3) wall movement due to the inward force from the eddy current interacting with the field. Heating of the wall causes an increase in blackbody radiation which can preheat the capsule and frozen deuterium–tritium fuel, while wall motion leads to potential misalignment of the lasers at the Hohlraum wall. Limiting these detrimental effects sets requirements on the tolerable magnitude of each effect. We present a nonlinear model for B-field diffusion through an infinitely long thin-walled cylinder with a temperature dependent resistivity, to show that a 15 μm thick wall of pure gold fails to meet these requirements. A new Hohlraum material made from an alloy of Au and Ta has a measured resistivity of ≥ 60 times that of Au and is shown with the nonlinear model to meet the requirements for magnetization. We compare the nonlinear model to simulations of the actual Hohlraum target using a finite element code which includes temperature-dependent Hohlraum resistivity.

Recent experiments involving directly driven beryllium spheres are reported. Plasma conditions are measured using Thomson scattering with the probe beam pointed 200, 300, and 400 μm from the surface of the sphere. Laser coupling is assessed using calorimeters that collect scattered light placed at various locations within the target chamber. Laser intensities of 1 0 14 W / c m 2 and 2.5 × 1 0 14 W / c m 2 are chosen to minimize unmodeled laser-plasma interactions (LPIs) that lead to laser-target decoupling. Two-dimensional simulations are compared to the interpreted data using the radiation-hydrodynamics code Lasnex. Heat transport is simulated using flux-limited Spitzer–Harm with both high (f = 0.15) and low (f = 0.03) flux limiters and the Schurtz–Nicolai-Busquet (SNB) model. At 1 0 14 W / c m 2, all three heat transport models agree well with the measurement, demonstrating that the heat flux is local at low intensities near the measurement locations. At 2.5 × 1 0 14 W / c m 2, the SNB and high flux model roughly match the plasma conditions but predict 2% uncoupled light compared to 10% measured. The use of drive multipliers to match the measured coupled light does not alter the agreement between measured and simulated plasma conditions, suggesting that decoupling due to LPI is unlikely to alter this agreement. The low flux model cannot match the plasma conditions and results in 19% scattered light. The use of a resonant absorption model can be used to bring the simulated scattered light into agreement, but the simulated plasma conditions are still in disagreement with the measurement. For this reason, the low flux model is rejected.

We report on the first direct voltage and current measurements from a laser-generated magnetic field coil target. The magnetic field was observed to scale with the laser intensity as B ∝ I laser 0.66 ± 0.13. This scaling relation can be derived from the measured voltage approximated by the laser-heated plasma electron temperature T e. The experiments used a 1053 nm laser with pulse lengths ranging from 0.5 to 20 ns and intensities ranging from 10 9 to 10 14 W / cm 2 to generate an electric potential that drives current through the coil. We show that the behavior of the coil can be described with a lumped-element circuit model.

Collisionless shock acceleration of protons and C$^{6+}$ ions has been achieved by the interaction of a 10$^{20}$ W/cm$^2$, 1 $\mu$m laser with a near-critical density plasma. Ablation of the initially solid density target by a secondary laser allowed for systematic control of the plasma profile. This enabled the production of beams with peaked spectra with energies of 10-18 MeV/a.m.u. and energy spreads of 10-20$\%$ with up to 3x10$^9$ particles within these narrow spectral features. The narrow energy spread and similar velocity of ion species with different charge-to-mass ratio are consistent with acceleration by the moving potential of a shock wave. Particle-in-cell simulations show shock accelerated beams of protons and C$^{6+}$ ions with energy distributions consistent with the experiments. Simulations further indicate the plasma profile determines the trade-off between the beam charge and energy and that with additional target optimization narrow energy spread beams exceeding 100 MeV/a.m.u. can be produced using the same laser conditions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Accelerators and Beams

Betatron radiation from laser wakefield accelerators is an ultrashort pulsed source of hard, synchrotron-like x-ray radiation. It emanates from a centimetre scale plasma accelerator producing GeV level electron beams. In recent years betatron radiation has been developed as a unique source capable of producing high resolution x-ray images in compact geometries. However, until now, the short pulse nature of this radiation has not been exploited. This report details the first experiment to utilise betatron radiation to image a rapidly evolving phenomenon by using it to radiograph a laser driven shock wave in a silicon target. The spatial resolution of the image is comparable to what has been achieved in similar experiments at conventional synchrotron light sources. The intrinsic temporal resolution of betatron radiation is below 100 fs, indicating that significantly faster processes could be probed in future without compromising spatial resolution. Quantitative measurements of the shock velocity and material density were made from the radiographs recorded during shock compression and were consistent with the established shock response of silicon, as determined with traditional velocimetry approaches. This suggests that future compact betatron imaging beamlines could be useful in the imaging and diagnosis of high-energy-density physics experiments., 11 pages, 7 figures

An experimental platform to study the interaction of two colliding high-velocity (0.01–0.2c; 0.05–20 MeV) proton plasmas in a high strength (20 T) magnetic field is introduced. This platform aims to study the collision of magnetized plasmas accelerated via the Target-Normal-Sheath-Acceleration mechanism and initially separated by distances of a few hundred microns. The plasmas are accelerated from solid targets positioned inside a few cubic millimeter cavity located within a Helmholtz coil that provides up to 20 T magnetic fields. Various parameters of the plasmas at their interaction location are estimated. These show an interaction that is highly non-collisional, and that becomes more and more dominated by the magnetic fields as time progresses (from 5 to 60 ps). Particle-in-cell simulations are used to reproduce the initial acceleration of the plasma both via simulations including the laser interaction and via simulations that start with preheated electrons (to save dramatically on computational expense). The benchmarking of such simulations with the experiment and with each other will be used to understand the physical interaction when a magnetic field is applied. In conclusion, the experimental density profile of the interacting plasmas is shown in the case without an applied magnetic magnetic field, so to show thatmore » without an applied field that the development of high-velocity shocks, as a result of particle-to-particle collisions, is not achievable in the configuration considered.« less

Recent experiments at the Jupiter Laser Facility investigated magnetization effects on collimated plasma jets. Laser-irradiated plastic-cone-targets produced collimated, millimeter-scale plasma flows as indicated by optical interferometry. Proton radiography of these jets showed no indication of strong, self-generated magnetic fields, suggesting a dominantly hydrodynamic collimating mechanism. Targets were placed in a custom-designed solenoid capable of generating field strengths up to 5 T. Proton radiographs of the well-characterized B-field, without a plasma jet, suggested an external source of trapped electrons that affects proton trajectories. The background magnetic field was aligned with the jet propagation direction, as is the case in many astrophysical systems. Optical interferometry showed that magnetization of the plasma results in disruption of the collimated flow and instead produces a hollow cavity. This result is a topic of ongoing investigation.

We report on the detection of the time-dependent B-field amplitude and topology in a laser-driven solenoid. The B-field inferred from both proton deflectometry and Faraday rotation ramps up linearly in time reaching 210 ± 35 T at the end of a 0.75-ns laser drive with 1 TW at 351 nm. A lumped-element circuit model agrees well with the linear rise and suggests that the blow-off plasma screens the field between the plates leading to an increased plate capacitance that converts the laser-generated hot-electron current into a voltage source that drives current through the solenoid. ALE3D modeling shows that target disassembly and current diffusion may limit the B-field increase for longer laser drive. Scaling of these experimental results to a National Ignition Facility (NIF) hohlraum target size (∼0.2cm^{3}) indicates that it is possible to achieve several tens of Tesla.

We investigate a new regime for betatron x-ray emission that utilizes kilojoule-class picosecond lasers to drive wakes in plasmas. When such laser pulses with intensities of ∼5×10^{18} W/cm^{2} are focused into plasmas with electron densities of ∼1×10^{19} cm^{-3}, they undergo self-modulation and channeling, which accelerates electrons up to 200 MeV energies and causes those electrons to emit x rays. The measured x-ray spectra are fit with a synchrotron spectrum with a critical energy of 10-20 keV, and 2D particle-in-cell simulations were used to model the acceleration and radiation of the electrons in our experimental conditions.

We report the first complete set of measurements of a laser-plasma optical system's refractive index, as seen by a second probe laser beam, as a function of the relative wavelength shift between the two laser beams. Both the imaginary and real refractive index components are found to be in good agreement with linear theory using plasma parameters measured by optical Thomson scattering and interferometry; the former is in contrast to previous work and has implications for crossed-beam energy transfer in indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion, and the latter is measured for the first time. The data include the first demonstration of a laser-plasma polarizer with $85%--87%$ extinction for the particular laser and plasma parameters used in this experiment, complementing the existing suite of high-power, tunable, and ultrafast plasma-based photonic devices.

The dynamics of magnetized flows is of great interest to the astrophysics community as the formation and long collimation distances of jets in accretion systems are still open questions. In many of these systems, the background magnetic field is parallel to the jet propagation direction. Recent experiments [1] performed at the Jupiter Laser Facility investigated the effects of imposing a background magnetic field aligned with a collimated jet. Plastic cone targets were irradiated by a long-pulse laser as shown schematically in Fig. 1a. When the shock emerges from the backside of the cone, accelerated material accumulates on axis producing a collimated flow. Figure 1b demonstrates the collimation of the plasma without the background field and the disruption of the flow when applying a 5 T field. Experimental results will be discussed in detail with supporting numerical work describing the mechanisms causing the jet disruption.

Laser-plasma-based accelerators are now able to provide the scientific community with novel high-energy light sources that are essential to study high-energy density matter, inertial confinement fusion, astrophysical systems, and fundamental plasma physics. Due to the transient and high-density properties of these systems, it is essential to develop light sources that are in the hard x-ray energy range (0.01–1 MeV) and directional and have high yield, low divergence, and short duration (ps and sub-ps). In this work, we show that by using a Laser plasma accelerator, it is possible to generate a broadband (0.01–1 MeV) hard x-ray source that satisfies the previous requirements. A series of experiments were conducted on the Titan laser at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where a 10 nC electron beam in the 10–380 MeV energy range was generated through a laser plasma accelerator. The electrons generate x-rays via their betatron motion (few-30 keV) and hard x-rays through inverse Compton scattering (10–250 keV) and/or Bremsstrahlung (up to 1 MeV). Due to its unique characteristics, this source can be an important tool for many applications in large-scale international laser facilities.

Collisional kinetic modifications of ion distributions in interpenetrating flows are investigated by irradiating two opposing targets, either CD/CD or CD/CH, on the National Ignition Facility. In the CD/CD case, neutron time-of-flight diagnostics are successfully used to infer the ion temperature, 5–6 keV, and velocity, 500 km/s per flow, of the flows using a multi-fluid approximation of beam-beam nuclear fusion. These values are found to be in agreement with simulations and other diagnostics. However, for CD/CH, the multi-fluid assumption breaks down, as fusion is quasi-thermonuclear in this case and thus more dependent on the details of the ion velocity distribution. Using kinetic-ion, hydrodynamic-electron, and hybrid particle-in-cell modeling, this is found to be partially due to a skewed deviation from a Maxwellian in the ion velocity distribution function resulting from ion-ion collisions. This skew causes a downshift in the mean neutron velocity that partially resolves the observation in the CD/CH case. We note that the discrepancy is not completely resolved via collisional effects alone and may be a signature of collisionless electromagnetic interactions such as the Weibel-filamentation instability.

Ultra-intense short pulse lasers incident on solid targets (e.g., thin Au foils) produce well collimated, broad-spectrum proton beams. These proton beams can be used to characterize magnetic fields, electric fields, and density gradients in high energy-density systems. The LLNL-Imaging Proton Spectrometer (L-IPS) was designed and built [H. Chen et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 81, 10D314 (2010)] for use with such laser produced proton beams. The L-IPS has an energy range of 50 keV-40 MeV with a resolving power (E/dE) of about 275 at 1 MeV and 21 at 20 MeV, as well as a single spatial imaging axis. In order to better characterize the dispersion and imaging capability of this diagnostic, a 3D finite element analysis solver is used to calculate the magnetic field of the L-IPS. Particle trajectories are then obtained via numerical integration to determine the dispersion relation of the L-IPS in both energy and angular space.

Pinhole imaging of large (mm scale) carbon-deuterium (CD) plasmas by proton self-emission has been used for the first time to study the microphysics of shock formation, which is of astrophysical relevance. The 3 MeV deuterium-deuterium (DD) fusion proton self-emission from these plasmas is imaged using a novel pinhole imaging system, with up to five different 1 mm diameter pinholes positioned 25 cm from target-chamber center. CR39 is used as the detector medium, positioned at 100 cm distance from the pinhole for a magnification of 4 ×. A Wiener deconvolution algorithm is numerically demonstrated and used to interpret the images. When the spatial morphology is known, this algorithm accurately reproduces the size of features larger than about half the pinhole diameter. For these astrophysical plasma experiments on the National Ignition Facility, this provides a strong constraint on simulation modeling of the experiment.

A study of the transition from collisional to collisionless plasma flows has been carried out at the National Ignition Facility using high Mach number (M>4) counterstreaming plasmas. In these experiments, CD-CD and CD-CH planar foils separated by 6-10 mm are irradiated with laser energies of 250 kJ per foil, generating ∼1000 km/s plasma flows. Varying the foil separation distance scales the ion density and average bulk velocity and, therefore, the ion-ion Coulomb mean free path, at the interaction region at the midplane. The characteristics of the flow interaction have been inferred from the neutrons and protons generated by deuteron-deuteron interactions and by x-ray emission from the hot, interpenetrating, and interacting plasmas. A localized burst of neutrons and bright x-ray emission near the midpoint of the counterstreaming flows was observed, suggesting strong heating and the initial stages of shock formation. As the separation of the CD-CH foils increases we observe enhanced neutron production compared to particle-in-cell simulations that include Coulomb collisions, but do not include collective collisionless plasma instabilities. The observed plasma heating and enhanced neutron production is consistent with the initial stages of collisionless shock formation, mediated by the Weibel filamentation instability.

We report the first experimental demonstration of a plasma wave plate based on laser-induced birefringence. An elliptically polarized input was converted into a nearly ideal circularly polarized beam using an optical system composed of a second laser beam and a plasma. The results are in excellent agreement with linear theory and three-dimensional simulations up to phase delays exceeding π/4, thus establishing the feasibility of laser-plasma photonic devices that are ultrafast, damage-resistant, and easily tunable.

High laser energy (>1.2 MJ) implosion experiments on the National Ignition Facility show that low mode implosion symmetry is highly dependent on an expanding high-Z wall “bubble” plasma feature. The bubble is caused by the early time deposition of laser beams incident on the interior near the entrance of the cylindrical hohlraum (outer cone beams). It absorbs beams designated for the waist of the hohlraum (inner cone beams) causing a redistribution of x-ray flux on the capsule. From measurements, we are able to quantify the absorption and expansion of this bubble. Measurements show that the resulting hot spot is more oblate when there is more inner beam absorption in the bubble. We find absorption in the bubble to be between 51 ± 3% and 62 ± 2%. This bubble absorption is found to evolve predictably as a function of the early time outer cone laser pulse fluence and the pulse length. Recent results on crossed-beam energy transfer are presented. Wavelength tuning was used to vary the amount of energy transfer between two beams in a quasi-stationary plasma with carefully controlled conditions. The amount of transfer agreed well with calculations assuming linear ion acoustic waves (IAWs) with amplitudes up to . Increasing the initial probe intensity to access larger IAW amplitudes for otherwise fixed conditions yields evidence of saturation. The ability to manipulate a beam's polarization, which results from the anisotropic nature of the interaction, is revisited; an example is provided to demonstrate how polarization effects in a multibeam situation can dramatically enhance the expected amount of energy transfer.

We present recent experiments on the characterization of Betatron radiation in the blowout regime of laser-wakefield acceleration. We observed Betatron x-rays up to 80 keV, and the characterization of the angular dependence of the x-ray spectrum suggests anisotropic electron trajectories in the plasma. The characterization of the source opens up new possibilities for application experiments.
