OBJECTIVE To assess whether apparently healthy subjects with a family history of systemic hypertension have a higher risk of presenting the insulin resistance syndrome. SUBJECTS Three hundred and eighty-six subjects aged 20-65 years. SETTING A middle socio-economic class urban community from Mexico City. METHOD All subjects and, when necessary, their first-degree relatives, answered a questionnaire and underwent a physical examination with measurement of height, weight and blood pressure. Serum insulin, glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides were measured during fasting and 2 h after an oral load of 75 g glucose. RESULTS A family history of systemic hypertension was present for 167 (43%) of the subjects, of whom 123 (31%) were obese. Subjects with a family history of hypertension had higher systolic blood pressures than did those without such a history (120 +/- 15 versus 115 +/- 10 mmHg). In the logistic regression model, the body mass index and age showed statistically significant effects on the fasting glucose:insulin ratio and on serum insulin levels after an oral load of glucose. When men and women were analysed separately, only in men were higher systolic and mean blood pressures and lower glucose:insulin ratios observed. In the logistic regression analysis the body mass index was a significant predictor of the glucose:insulin ratio and serum insulin levels after an oral load of glucose, especially in men. CONCLUSION Apparently healthy male offspring of hypertensive parents have higher blood pressure levels and lower insulin sensitivities than do offspring of normotensive parents. Insulin resistance was related to obesity, but not to a family history of hypertension, as had previously been reported by other research groups.

- Abstract
Background: Our objective was to assess the relationship of hormones such as cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) with insulin resistance and overweight., Methods: We designed and conducted a cross-sectional, observational survey consisting of home visits within a previously defined area of Mexico City. The study included 303 apparently healthy volunteers from a middle-class socioeconomic urban community. We measured glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, cortisol, and DHEA-S. Insulin resistance (IR) was defined as belonging to the first quartile of fasting glucose/insulin ratio (G/IR) distribution or fourth quartile of IR (HOMA). Overweight was defined as body mass index (BMI) > or =25 kg/m(2)., Results: To predict IR in women < or =35 years of age, principal component analysis (PCA) disclosed three components: 1) cholesterol, BMI, and diastolic blood pressure (DBP); 2) cholesterol, triglycerides, and cortisol, and 3) dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate [DHEA-S]. Solely the latter (DHEA-S) was significantly associated with IR (odds ratio [OR] = 1.80, confidence interval 95% [CI 95%] 1.11-2.91, p = 0.015). For men < or =35 years of age, there were two components: 1) cholesterol, triglycerides, BMI, and DBP, and 2) DHEA-S, cholesterol, and cortisol. Component 1 was significantly associated with IR (OR = 5.65; CI 95% 1.62-19.65, p = 0.006). To predict overweight in women >35 years of age, there were three components, including 1) cholesterol and triglycerides, 2) cortisol, and 3) DHEA-S and G/IR. Component 2 was significantly associated with overweight (OR = 0.38, CI 95% 0.23-0.64, p = 0.000)., Conclusions: In women < or =35 years of age, high DHEA-S levels were associated with insulin resistance, which suggests that in young women DHEA-S exerts anti-estrogenic action, perhaps caused by its competitive binding with the estrogen receptor. Additionally, in women >35 years of age, low cortisol levels were associated with overweight. These associations were not identified for the male subgroup.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Ever since the quest for independence between 1810 and 1819, economic thought in Colombia has been shaped by policy debates and characterized by a pragmatic and eclectic approach. Economic thought in Colombia can only be revealed through the exploration of economists'practices and the role of economic arguments within broader public debate. This history of Colombian economic thought provides a detailed account of major issues that have marked the constant feedback between economic ideas and economic practice in Colombia during the 19th and 20th centuries. This volume is thus a history of the interaction between ideas and policy. Those involved in these debates – politicians, public officials, journalists, and, latterly, professional economists – established direct contact with what can be identified as the centers of production of economic theory (both in Europe and the US) and entered regional and local networks in economics, but were not just importers of ideas or theories. The way in which they read, discussed, transformed and applied economic theories in Colombia makes for a rich environment for the production and implementation of economic policies that drew, diverged and transformed the way economics was understood and used as a source of knowledge for practical concerns. This is why the history of Colombian economic thought does not fit into traditional typologies of economic schools and why it must be understood as part of a political debate and within a political, social and cultural context that demanded specific solutions to urgent social demands. Through the study of what was taught, when and how, at the beginnings of the republican era, and why and how professional economists came to lead public debate and economic policy making in the 20th century, this book explores the foundations of this permanent interaction between theory and practice. This book will be of significant interest to readers of history of economic thought, economic history and the history of Colombian and Latin American economic, political and social life more broadly.

- Abstract
Organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainability and responsibility. They are challenged to develop a holistic approach to value creation that reconciles economic, social, and environmental goals. This book describes how knowledge can facilitate this process and amplifies the idea of knowledge management to strategically serve multiple stakeholders in a sustainable and responsible way. In particular, the book introduces the concept of the'Need Knowledge-Driven Organization.'It builds on mature research on organizational purpose, stakeholder theory, and phronesis, and advances the concept of'needs.'This provides a new lens for understanding the sustainable and responsible business case: First, people are motivated by their needs, and organizations represent social structures that facilitate the satisfaction of shared needs. Second, needs reflect and combine social, environmental, and economic concerns, making sustainability and responsibility more realizable for practitioners. And third, needs provide a reference point for holistic value creation and can thus align knowledge processes and structures in organizations.

- Abstract

- Abstract
For all of the tremendous advances in medicine and treatment the world has seen in the modern era, the human body's ability to heal itself remains a (literally) vital and often overlooked facet of healthcare. Through the use of emotional design, aimed at transforming healthcare environments, such as waiting rooms, in such a way as to boost the emotional wellbeing of patients, and thus their general attitudes, including in regard to their own healing processes, medical institutions can improve outcomes for the people they treat while simultaneously lowering overall costs. Design, as an inherently transdisciplinary, problem-solving activity, is well-suited to this task. And when combined with a field of study such as neuroscience, which can literally map out the perceptions that lead to the experience of particular emotions, healthcare environments can be transformed into spaces (through such innovations as Kansei engineering) that then subsequently transform the people who rely on them the most, leading to more efficiency and less red ink.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book examines human conflict throughout history, the reasons behind the struggles, and why it persists. The volume delves into the causes of human conflict and what can be done about them. Based on detailed descriptions that support insightful interpretations, the book explores significant historical events in the course of human history. By pursuing a “web of violence” approach, it raises and answers questions about the sources of conflict and how it may or may not be resolved through investigations into human agency and practice. It evaluates lessons learned concerning human conflict, violence, and warfare. To illustrate these lessons, the book presents a broad geographical and temporal set of data, including research on the time of Neanderthals in Europe (20-30 thousand years ago); the Late Neolithic civilization on the Mediterranean (6-8 thousand years ago); medieval Ireland; contemporary history of the Western Dani peoples of West Papua; and, finally, recent issues in Brazil, Congo, and Kenya.

- Abstract
Legumes have high potential for improving the nutritional quality of foods, but limited data on their bioactive compounds exists. Results of clinical and epidemiological studies suggest that natural antioxidants can protect us against oxidative stress that is closely associated with cancer and cardiovascular disease. Legumes are a valuable source of bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds, peptides and non-nutritional factors. They are rich in several important micronutrients, including potassium, magnesium, folate, iron, and zinc, and are an important source of protein in vegetarian diets. They are among the only plant foods that provide significant amounts of the amino acid, lysine. Commonly consumed legumes are also rich in total and soluble fibre as well as in resistant starch. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the antioxidant activity and health aspects of legumes. The international spread of contributors will describe the key factors that influence consumer acceptance of legumes in the diet, as well as the known functional properties of legumes and legume based food products. It will serve as an excellent and up-to-date reference for food scientists, food chemists, researchers in human nutrition, dietetics and the chemistry of natural compounds.

- Abstract
Just as the term design has been going through change, growth and expansion of meaning, and interpretation in practice and education – the same can be said for design research. The traditional boundaries of design are dissolving and connections are being established with other fields at an exponential rate. Based on the proceedings from the IASDR 2017 Conference, Re:Research is an edited collection that showcases a curated selection of 83 papers – just over half of the works presented at the conference. With topics ranging from the introduction of design in the primary education sector to designing information for Artificial Intelligence systems, this book collection demonstrates the diverse perspectives of design and design research. Divided into seven thematic volumes, this collection maps out where the field of design research is now. Two Blind Spots in Design Thinking Estelle Berger From the 1980s, design thinking has emerged in companies as a method for practical and creative problem solving, based on designers'way of thinking, integrated into a rational and iterative model to accompany the process. In companies, design thinking helped valuing creative teamwork, though not necessarily professional designers'expertise. By pointing out two blind spots in design thinking models, as currently understood and implemented, this paper aims at shedding light on two rarely described traits of designers'self. The first relies in problem framing, a breaking point that deeply escapes determinism. The second blind spot questions the post project process. We thus seek to portray designers'singularity, in order to stimulate critical reflection and encourage the opening-up to design culture. Companies and organizations willing to make the most of designers'expertise would gain acknowledging their critical heteronomy to foster innovation based on strong and disruptive visions, beyond an out-of-date problem-solving approach to design. Creating Different Modes of Existence: Toward an Ontological Ethics of Design Jamie Brassett This paper will address some design concerns relating to philosopher Étienne Souriau's work Les différents modes d'existence (2009). This has important bearings upon design because, first, this philosophical attitude thinks of designing not as an act of forming objects with identity and meaning, but rather as a process of delivering things that allow for a multiplicity of creative remodulation of our very existences. Secondly, Souriau unpicks the concept of a being existing as a unified identity and redefines existence as a creative act of nonstop production of a variety of modes of existence. In doing this he not only moves ontological considerations to the fore of philosophical discussions away from epistemological ones, but does so in such a way as to align with attitudes to ethics that relate it to ontology – notably the work of Spinoza. (This places Souriau in a philosophical lineage that leads back, for example, to Nietzsche and Whitehead, and forward [from his era] to Deleuze and Guattari.) In thinking both ontology and ethics together, this paper will introduce a different approach to the ethics of design. Investigating Ideation Flexibility through Incremental to Radical Heuristics Ian Baker, Daniel Sevier, Seda McKilligan, Kathryn W. Jablokow, Shanna R. Daly, Eli M. Silk The concept of design thinking has received increasing attention during recent years, particularly from managers around the world. However, despite being the subject of a vast number of articles and books stating its importance, the effectiveness of this approach is unclear, as the claims about the concept are not grounded on empirical studies or evaluations. In this study, we investigated the perceptions of six design thinking methods of 21 managers in the agri

- Abstract
This book introduces readers to a wide range of applications for elements in Group 16 of the periodic table, such as, optical fibers for communication and sensing, X-ray imaging, electrochemical sensors, data storage devices, biomedical applications, photovoltaics and IR detectors, the rationale for these uses, the future scope of their applications, and expected improvements to existing technologies. Following an introductory section, the book is broadly divided into three parts—dealing with Sulfur, Selenium, and Tellurium. The sections cover the basic structure of the elements and their compounds in bulk and nanostructured forms; properties that make these useful for various applications, followed by applications and commercial products. As the global technology revolution necessitates the search for new materials and more efficient devices in the electronics and semiconductor industry, Applications of Chalcogenides: S, Se, and Te is an ideal book for a wide range of readers in industry, government and academic research facilities looking beyond silicon for materials used in the electronic and optoelectronic industry as well as biomedical applications.

- Abstract
The Entrepreneurial Research University in Latin America examines the fascinating clashes between the Latin American tradition and the influence of new globalized forms of organization represented by entrepreneurial university models. With particular emphasis on the governance of university research, the author aims to answer key questions: Why and how do local traditions or global forces shape structural and cultural organizational change? Are these changes necessarily related to the improvement of the quality of teaching and research?

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Many health benefits have been attributed to selenium that include preventing various forms of cancer (e.g., colon cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer and liver cancer), heart disease and other cardiovascular and muscle disorders, inhibiting viral expression, delaying the progression of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients, slowing the aging process, and having roles in mammalian development, including male reproduction and immune function. The purpose of the book is the same as the first two volumes which is to bring an up to date status of current research in the rapidly developing selenium field centered around the health benefits attributed to this element and how this element makes its way into protein.
