Pearl Danniel (1885-1975) was a homesteader in the Rock Creek area of McCone County, Montana, and a prolific writer. Collection consists primarily of her autobiographical, semi-autobiographical, fiction, poetry, essays, and political writings on a wide variety of topics including homesteading, Fort Peck Dam, the need for rural roads, political waste, and her anti-war sentiments., This collection consists primarily of the writings of Pearl Danniel. Writings include several uncompleted versions (written from the 1930s to the 1970s) of her autobiography. In addition there are several works of fiction, including a novel entitled "Slum Timber", several novelettes, including "Mad Dora", "A Harlot's Children", and "The Red Outlaw", and numerous short stories, many of which revolve around the life of her brother Bert Sparks. Also included in the collection are many essays and narrative poems about horses, cowboys, sheepherders, the Badlands, and her personal vision of the world; her regular local news column; and her political writings about the Fort Peck Dam, government waste, anti-war, women's equality (she didn't believe in it), and the need for a road through the isolated parts of McCone County. Most of her writings reflect the difficulty of survival in eastern Montana's Badlands, the loneliness of life on the homestead, the close community feeling of people living there, and her bitterness at the loss of her homestead to "The Government.", In addition to the writings there is also a small amount of correspondence (1951-1974) with family members, publishers, and political figures., There is a small subgroup for Albert Leroy Sparks, consisting of a horse brand book (1930-1931) and an unemployment registration card (1937-1940).

Samuel and Isaac Russell were writers. Samuel is the author of, "An American Decimal System of Weights and Measures," and Isaac was the founder of, "The American Soldier," an early newspaper for servicemen. Isaac Russell was also a correspondent for the New York Times after the Spanish American War, 1898. This collection consists of images of Samuel Russell, his brother, Isaac Russell and his sister, Lucy. Four portraits span the life of Samuel. Isaac worked on the article regarding the sinking of the Titanic with Marconi, the inventor of the wireless telegraph. The Agnes Just Reid papers (1850-2004) consist of a biographical sketch, an oral history transcript (1972), personal correspondence, and biographical sketches and correspondence relating to her mother, Emma Thompson Bennett Just. Included are correspondence and other materials related to the publication of her book Letters of Long Ago.

"This project explores nineteenth-century Southern women writers' discussions of self-regulation in their sentimental fiction. This dissertation seeks to enrich literary scholarship's understanding of Southern women's writing in Victorian America; while nineteenth-century women's embodied experiences have long been studied, there has not heretofore been a study of nineteenth-century Southern women's sentimental fiction through the lens of sentimental rhetoric. I have chosen women authors whose works were relatively popular for Americans north and south of the Mason Dixon line but remain obscured by the canon of nineteenth-century American literature privileging works by Northern writers. These women authors are Caroline Gilman, Augusta Jane Evans Wilson, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, and Grace King. Scholars tend to study Northern women writers, if they study women writers at all; this gives scholars of nineteenth-century literature a false sense of the influence Southern women writers had on American social reform. Further, scholars can take for granted the rhetorical nuances Southern women writers possessed to be relatively popular among Northern and Southern authors--despite intense divisiveness in nineteenth-century America."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
