Abstract

Background: During the COVID 19 pandemic academic institutes worldwide were forced to shift to online or socially distanced learning. Nursing students faced unique challenges due to the limited practical learning environment and removal of supernumerary status to meet increased pressure on health care resources. Aim: To explore the experiences and perceptions of pre-registered nurses in relation to their university education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Underpinned by Lizzio (2006) [1] five senses of student success model, a novel qualitative approach using peer-to-peer discussion was utilized to explore the experiences of pre-registered nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students who were on their second and final year in the nursing program were invited to participate. Interviews were conducted and transcribed using an online meeting platform. Data were analyzed using the five main stages of framework analysis. Results: Eleven peer-to-peer discussion with 22 students were conducted. The five themes were linked with the five senses student success model: capability, connectedness, purpose, resourcefulness, and culture. Six sub-themes emerged in the data: confidence and learning process, building relationships, communication, student as health professional and mental health consequences of COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Whilst there was strength in university provision, the pandemic was an opportunity for students and academics to reflect and learn about how to further programme resilience and enhance student support processes. We recommend that nursing programmes should include concepts of transition, pandemic preparedness, collaboration with professional partners, and provision of catch-up sessions to analyse gaps on their skills and knowledge.

Abstract

Introduction: Childhood obesity, a true international epidemic, is a multifactorial pathology including genetic and environmental factors., Aim: Determine the prevalence and risk factors of overweight in Tunisian schoolchildren in the Bardo region, an urban department of the Tunis governorate., Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study involving schoolchildren aged between 10 and 12 years old. All students received questioning, anthropometric measurements and a food survey. According to the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) body weight curves by gender, a Body Mass Index (BMI) in children ≥ 97th percentile defined overweight, and a BMI ≥ IOTF-30 defined obesity., Results: The mean age of the 105 schoolchildren was 10.8±0.5 years. The average BMI was 19.68±3.86 kg/m². More than a third of students (35.3%) were overweight. Overweight affected 45% of girls and 29.2% of boys. The prevalence of obesity was 8.6% (7 boys and 2 girls). 55.6% of girls and 47.4% of the overweight boys had a high calorie diet. TV eating was reported in 40.5% of overweight students versus 19.4% of normal weight students. Prandial overeating increases the risk of overweight in children by 18.48 (p=0.0001). Parental obesity multiplies by 2.69 the risk of overweight in their offspring (p=0.023)., Conclusion: In addition to genetic heritability, children share rating habits with their parents. Therefore, management based on hygienic-dietary measures must involve the whole family.

Abstract

Several natural disasters and the appearance of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic created stressful situations to many health-care workers in the Philippines. New health-related challenges surfaced, and health-care workers felt lost since many of the challenges were either directly or indirectly caused by the fast-spreading coronavirus infections and its variants. Further, the way people die also changed, causing confusion and influencing the Filipino grief and bereavement processes. In response to the need of the health-care workers, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) through its education portal created and offered free webinars, aimed to help health-care workers understand and make sense of what was happening, thus empowering them with knowledge on how to manage the challenges and provide better care to the patients and the community as well. This article relates the process of planning and implementing online webinars during the era of social distancing and COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The diplectanid monogenean Lamellodiscus echeneis (Wagener, 1857) is a specific and common gill parasite of the gilthead seabream Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758, in the Mediterranean Sea. Few isolated molecular studies of this monogenean have been conducted, and its population structure and genetic diversity are poorly understood. This study represents the first analysis of the population genetics of L. echeneis , isolated from wild and cage-reared gilthead seabream from fifteen localities in both the Southern (Tunisia) and Northern (Italy and Spain) regions of the Mediterranean Sea, using nuclear ITS rDNA markers and a partial fragment of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI). The phylogenetic trees based on the newly obtained dataset and the previously published sequences of L. echeneis corroborated the spread of only a single species throughout the Mediterranean Sea. The star-like haplotypes network, inferred by COI sequences, suggested a recent population expansion of L. echeneis . This is supported by the observed high haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.918) and low nucleotide diversity (Pi = 0.01595). Population structure-based AMOVA for two groups (the Adriatic Sea and the rest of the Mediterranean Sea) attributed 35.39% of the total variation to differences within populations, 16.63% to differences among populations within groups, and 47.99% to differences among groups. Fixation indices were significant, with a high FST value (0.64612), likely related to the divergence of the parasite populations from the Adriatic Sea and other Mediterranean regions. Phylogenetic analyses grouped all samples into the main clade corresponding to L. echeneis from several localities. This study provides insight into the genetic variation between L. echeneis populations, and did not show a clear genetic structure between populations of L. echeneis throughout Tunisian, Italian, and Spanish localities, which can be attributed to the considerable gene flow between the populations favoured by the potential for host dispersion within the Mediterranean Sea. Finally, haplotypes shared between wild and cage-reared hosts provided evidence for the potential for cross-infection between wild and farmed hosts in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract

In order to improve the learning outcomes, skills, sense of belonging and well-being of their students, faculties around the world have chosen to implement mentoring programs for their learners. Given the complexity of implementing this approach, our objectives in this review are, on the one hand, to discuss and support the principles and recommendations of a mentoring project in an academic setting and, on the other hand, to present the vision of the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis regarding this mentoring approach.

23. DNA barcoding reveals cryptic species in the sea slater Ligia italica (Crustacea, Isopoda) from Tunisia.

Abstract

Barcoding studies have provided significant insights into phylogenetic relationships among species belonging to the genus Ligia (Crustacea, Isopoda). Herein the diversity of the Italian sea slater Ligia italica from Tunisia is studied for the first time. Samples were collected from 18 localities in Tunisia, and the analysis included previously published sequences from Italy and Greece available in GenBank. Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic analyses were carried out using a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene. Putative cryptic species were explored using the 'barcode gap' approach in the software ASAP. A genetic landscape shape analysis was carried out using the program Alleles in Space. The analyses revealed highly divergent and well-supported clades of L. italica dispersed across Tunisia (Clades A1 and A2), Greece (Clade B) and Italy (Clades C1 and C2). High genetic dissimilarity among clades suggested that L. italica constitute a cryptic species complex. Divergence among different L. italica lineages (Clades A, B and C) occurred around 7-4.5 Ma. The detected high genetic distances among clades did not result from atypical mitochondrial DNAs or intracellular infection by Wolbachia bacteria. The complex history of the Mediterranean Sea appears to have played a significant role in shaping the phylogeographic pattern of Ligia italica . Additional morphological and molecular studies are needed to confirm the existence of cryptic species in Ligia italica in Mediterranean.

24. Capturing electron-driven chiral dynamics in UV-excited molecules.

Abstract

Chiral molecules, used in applications such as enantioselective photocatalysis 1 , circularly polarized light detection 2 and emission 3 and molecular switches 4,5 , exist in two geometrical configurations that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. These so-called (R) and (S) enantiomers exhibit different physical and chemical properties when interacting with other chiral entities. Attosecond technology might enable influence over such interactions, given that it can probe and even direct electron motion within molecules on the intrinsic electronic timescale 6 and thereby control reactivity 7-9 . Electron currents in photoexcited chiral molecules have indeed been predicted to enable enantiosensitive molecular orientation 10 , but electron-driven chiral dynamics in neutral molecules have not yet been demonstrated owing to the lack of ultrashort, non-ionizing and perturbative light pulses. Here we use time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism (TR-PECD) 11-15 with an unprecedented temporal resolution of 2.9 fs to map the coherent electronic motion initiated by ultraviolet (UV) excitation of neutral chiral molecules. We find that electronic beatings between Rydberg states lead to periodic modulations of the chiroptical response on the few-femtosecond timescale, showing a sign inversion in less than 10 fs. Calculations validate this and also confirm that the combination of the photoinduced chiral current with a circularly polarized probe pulse realizes an enantioselective filter of molecular orientations following photoionization. We anticipate that our approach will enable further investigations of ultrafast electron dynamics in chiral systems and reveal a route towards enantiosensitive charge-directed reactivity., (© 2024. Abstract

Introduction-Aim: Flexible insulin therapy is currently considered the gold standard therapy of type 1 diabetes. We aimed to study the evolution of glycemic control, weight and nutritional intake of a group of patients with type 1 diabetes, three months after the initiation of functional insulin therapy (FIT)., Methods: This was a prospective longitudinal study having included 30 type 1 diabetic patients hospitalized for education to FIT. Each patient underwent an assessment of glycemic control (glycated hemoglobin (A1C) and number of hypoglycemia), weight and nutritional intake before FIT and 3 months after the initiation of this educative approach., Results: The mean age of patients was 21,8 ± 7,9 years and the sex ratio was 0,5. The mean duration of diabetes was 7,2 ± 6 years. Three months after initiation of FIT, we observed a significant lowering of A1C, which went from 9,2 ± 1,6% to 8,3 ± 1,4% (p<0,001) of the number of minor hypoglycemia (p=0,001) and that of severe hypoglycemia (p= 0,021). the average weight went from 64,6 ± 13,1 kg to 65,5 ± 13,5 kg (p = 0,040) with a significant increase in BMI (p = 0,041). Weight gain was observed in 67% of patients. This weight gain contrasted with a significant decrease in caloric (p = 0,040) and in carbohydrates intakes (p = 0,027)., Conclusion: Weight gain, associated with better glycemic control, should encourage the healthcare team to strengthen therapeutic education of patients undergoing FIT in order to limit weight gain.

Abstract

Galvinoxyl, as one of the most extensively studied organic stable free radicals, exhibits a notable phase transition from a high-temperature (HT) phase with a ferromagnetic (FM) intermolecular interaction to a low-temperature (LT) phase with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling at 85 K. Despite significant research efforts, the crystal structure of the AFM LT phase has remained elusive. This study successfully elucidates the crystal structure of the LT phase, which belongs to the P 1̄ space group. The crystal structure of the LT phase is found to consist of a distorted dimer, wherein the distortion arises from the formation of short intermolecular distances between anti-node carbons in the singly-occupied molecular orbital (SOMO). Starting from the structure of the LT phase, wave function calculations show that the AFM coupling 2 J / k B varies significantly from -1069 K to -54 K due to a parallel shift of the molecular planes within the dimer.

Abstract

Several natural disasters and the appearance of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic created stressful situations to many health-care workers in the Philippines. New health-related challenges surfaced, and health-care workers felt lost since many of the challenges were either directly or indirectly caused by the fast-spreading coronavirus infections and its variants. Further, the way people die also changed, causing confusion and influencing the Filipino grief and bereavement processes. In response to the need of the health-care workers, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) through its education portal created and offered free webinars, aimed to help health-care workers understand and make sense of what was happening, thus empowering them with knowledge on how to manage the challenges and provide better care to the patients and the community as well. This article relates the process of planning and implementing online webinars during the era of social distancing and COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: Compare insulin initiation in both private and public sectors.
