The doctrine of the pactum salutis (covenant of redemption) offers the idea of a covenant between the very persons of the Trinity for the redemption of humanity. The doctrine received most of its attention in seventeenth-century Reformed theology, and has been criticized and almost totally forgotten in dogmatics since the eighteenth century. Most recent Reformed dogmatics tend to ignore the doctrine or disparage it from biblical, trinitarian, christological, pneumatological, and soteriological perspectives-namely, the doctrine lacks scriptural basis; it is tritheistic; it leads to subordination of the Son; it omits the role of the Holy Spirit; and it applies a deterministic idea for the Christian life. The theologies of Witsius, Owen, Dickson, Goodwin, and Cocceius portray a very robust form of the doctrine. Witsius argues with the help of a peculiar methodology of cross-referencing and collation of related scriptural texts that the doctrine is firmly based on biblical exegesis that was passed on from the patristic era. The doctrine formulated by Owen endorses the doctrines of inseparable operations and terminus operationis so as to give deep insight into the Trinity. In Dickson's doctrine, the Son's voluntary consent and obedience to the will of the Father are highly emphasized. Likewise, Goodwin's depiction of the Holy Spirit secures the divinity of the Spirit as well as his indispensable role for the transaction and accomplishment of the pactum. The doctrine in the theology of Cocceius sheds much light on the vibrant dynamic of the Christian life in accordance with the ordo salutis. The doctrine of the pactum salutis of the five Reformed theologians clearly shows that the doctrine is both promised and promising for theology and the life of faith.

Der Briefwechsel des Zürcher Antistes Heinrich Bullinger (1504-1575) ist eine bedeutende epistolarische Quelle sowohl in politischer, kultureller, kirchenhistorischer, mentalitätsgeschichtlicher, biografischer als auch in wirtschaftlicher, meteorologischer und astronomischer Hinsicht. Im vorliegenden Band sind die 261 erhaltenen Briefe aus dem Jahr 1545 veröffentlicht. Der Eidgenossenschaft und ihren Verbündeten kommt in der Korrespondenz mit Personen aus Basel, Bern, Lausanne, Graubünden (darunter italienische Glaubesflüchtlinge) und St. Gallen eine besondere Bedeutung zu. So ergeben sich etwa neue Erkenntnisse zur Reformation im Appenzellerland sowie die Möglichkeit, die Entstehung der Eidgenössischen Chronik von Johannes Stumpf und Vadians Mitarbeit daran zu verfolgen. Auf kirchenhistorischer Ebene spielen der Kölner Reformationsversuch und die Auseinandersetzungen der Zürcher Kirche mit Martin Luther und Johannes Cochläus eine besondere Rolle. Auch zu Johannes Calvin liefert der Band bislang Unbekanntes.

This volume of the CSEL presents the first critical edition of Prosper of Aquitaine's Liber epigrammatum, edited by A. Horsting. From his position at the side of Pope Leo, Prosper composed a poetical synthesis of Augustine's vast œuvre, writing poems inspired by maxims he had excerpted from his works. The epigrams were a guide to Augustine that was both authoritative and pleasant to read. His synthesis became an essential part of the school curriculum from the days of Charlemagne to those of Louis XIV, serving as the first and most universal interpretative scheme for Augustine's theology for generations of students. The poems, though little known and studied today, were widely read throughout the Middle Ages, in the debates of the Reformation over the nature of predestination and grace, and again in the controversies over the teachings of Port Royal.This popular text is preserved in more than 180 manuscripts. In order to establish the text, those manuscripts fragments copied before the twelfth century have been used, a group amounting to around forty textual witnesses. This volume fills a major desideratum in the field of Christian Latin poetry and will be of interest to philologists, theologians, and historians of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Bei den Mitte des 4. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. verfaßten Commenta in Ciceronis Rhetorica des römischen Rhetorikprofessors Marius Victorinus handelt es sich um den einzigen vollständig erhaltenen antiken Kommentar zum rhetorischen Jugendwerk Ciceros De inventione, das in Spätantike und Mittelalter zu den wichtigsten Handbüchern der Rhetorik gehörte. Die Bedeutung der Commenta manifestiert sich in der reichen handschriftlichen Überlieferung (etwa 60 Textzeugen), die für diese Edition erstmals vollständig berücksichtigt ist. Dabei kommt eine bisher unbekannte italienische Handschriftenfamilie zum Vorschein, die einen unabhängigen Zugang zum Archetyp hatte und an zahlreichen Stellen den richtigen Text bewahrt. Die neuen Einsichten in die Überlieferung und eine erstmals durchgeführte kritische examinatio des überlieferten Textes führen zu einer grundlegenden Neuedition, die die seit 150 Jahren maßgebliche Ausgabe Karl Halms ersetzen wird.

La documentación sobre el noble Hug de Cardona, señor del Real y Beniopa, alquerías de la huerta de Gandia, ha sido localizada y editada después de una exhaustiva búsqueda en varios archivos, fundamentalmente en el Archivo del Reino de València, el Archivo Histórico Nacional y el Archivo de Protocolos Notariales del Patriarca de València. En conjunto, se recogen 357 piezas documentales que abarcan buena parte del siglo xv, aproximadamente la mitad de las cuales se publican en este primer volumen de la obra. Se trata, pues, de una aportación de relieve para el conocimiento de la historia social de la nobleza valenciana en una época -el siglo XV- llena de significaciones, pero también por la historia del derecho, debido a la rica información sobre pleitos, sentencias y otras actuaciones judiciales en el marco del régimen foral vigente hasta la Nueva Planta.

Presented via the natural method by Hans Ørberg, Ars Amatoria (“The Art of Love”) allows students to read lightly altered Latin texts. The text is a poem in three books by Ovid. The first two books consist of instructions to men on the wooing of women of easy virtue; the third, of instructions to woman on seduction of men. The work is full of humor and charm, and contains interesting glimpses of Roman life and manners—the circus, the theatre, the banquet. It was perhaps partly on account of its immorality that Augustus banished the poet to Tomi by the Black Sea. These poems can be read by students who have completed the first five chapters of Ørberg's second-year text Roma Aeterna. (Lingua Latina Pars II), also available from Focus.

Dazu gehört auch Bengels gescheiterter Versuch, die Ereignisse der Heilsgeschichte zu berechnen.Die auf mehrere Bände angelegte Edition seiner Korrespondenz bietet erstmals das gesamte erhaltene Material: über 3.100 Briefe von und an Bengel. Stücke, die für Bengels Biographie, Theologie, Pädagogik oder Seelsorge wichtig sind, werden als Volltext geboten; andere erscheinen als ausführliche Inhaltsangabe. Fremdsprachige Schreiben werden übersetzt. Der textkritische Apparat gibt einen Überblick über verschiedene Überlieferungen eines Briefes; der erläuternde Apparat liefert Informationen zu genannten Personen, Sachbezügen und Buchtiteln. Register der Bibelstellen, Personen und Orte erschließen jeden Band zusätzlich.Auf den im ersten Band vorgelegten frühen Briefwechsel (1707–1722) folgt nun in Band 2 die Korrespondenz der mittleren Denkendorfer Jahre (1723–1731). Der Denkendorfer Klosterpräzeptor gewinnt Konturen als Pädagoge und Seelsorger. Wir bekommen Einblick in seine Arbeit am Novum Testamentum Graecum (erschienen 1734) und am Gnomon (1. Aufl. 1742), auch in das Zustandekommen seiner endzeitlichen Berechnungen und das geteilte Echo im Freundeskreis.

Martin Opitz (1597-1639), the founder of German art poetry when European national cultures were being born, left a corpus of mainly Latin letters and inscriptions. These are now published for the first time in translation, richly illustrated and with a detailed commentary, together with letters from Opitz'correspondents, with his dedications, and with scattered biographical documents and reports from his contemporaries. Opitz'correspondence stretches from Paris, Leyden and Strasbourg as far as Silesia, Transylvania, Prussia, Poland and Sweden and makes a significant contribution to our knowledge of European cultural history. Apart from topics of late humanist scholarship (e.g. epigraphy, church history, classical literature and historiology) it contains reports from diplomatic envoys and war reports, early evidence of German literary and linguistic criticism, of the culture of letter-writing and of the reception of the Middle Ages. Leading scholars, theologians, monarchs, politicians and poets make an appearance, such as J. A. Comenius, S. Dach, P. Fleming and H. Grotius, Prince Ludwig of Anhalt-Köthen and other members of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft (Fruitbearing Society). The edition is published in three volumes, and apart from the actual documents contains a detailed introduction, Christoph Coler's biography of Opitz, a comprehensive bibliography, numerous lists and two indexes.

This book traces the transmission and reception of one of the most influential novels in Western literature. The Golden Ass, the only ancient Roman novel to survive in its entirety, tells of a young man changed into an ass by magic and his bawdy adventures and narrow escapes before the goddess Isis changes him back again. Its centerpiece is the famous story of Cupid and Psyche. Julia Gaisser follows Apuleius'racy tale from antiquity through the sixteenth century, tracing its journey from roll to codex in fourth-century Rome, into the medieval library of Monte Cassino, into the hands of Italian humanists, into print, and, finally, over the Alps and into translation in Spanish, French, German, and English. She demonstrates that the novel's reception was linked with Apuleius'reputation as a philosopher and the persona he projected in his works. She relates Apuleius and the Golden Ass to a diverse cast of important literary and historical figures--including Augustine, Fulgentius, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Bessarion, Boiardo, and Beroaldo. Paying equal attention to the novel's transmission (how it survived) and its reception (how it was interpreted), she places the work in its many different historical contexts, examining its representation in art, literary imitation, allegory, scholarly commentary, and translation. The volume contains several appendixes, including an annotated list of the manuscripts of the Golden Ass. This book is based on the author's Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College in 2000.

This thematic fourth Supplementum to Ancient Narrative, entitled Metaphor and the Ancient Novel, is a collection of revised versions of papers originally read at the Second Rethymnon International Conference on the Ancient Novel (RICAN 2) under the same title, held at the University of Crete, Rethymnon, on May 19-20, 2003.Though research into metaphor has reached staggering proportions over the past twenty-five years, this is the first volume dedicated entirely to the subject of metaphor in relation to the ancient novel. Not every contributor takes into account theoretical discussions of metaphor, but the usefulness of every single paper lies in the fact that they explore actual texts while sometimes theorists tend to work out of context.

300 Briefe aus drei Jahren dokumentieren die Vielfalt der Tätigkeiten und Beziehungen Melanchthons. Das mühsame Ringen um die Formulierung der Rechtfertigungslehre findet im Briefwechsel seinen Widerhall. Bald danach konnte der Kommentar zum Römerbrief vollendet werden. Mit politischen Fragen war der Professor weiterhin befaßt, hauptsächlich als Gutachter. Bemerkenswerte Gutachten betreffen die Kirchengüter und Hochstifte, das Konzil, die Behandlung der Wiedertäufer und die Ehescheidung Heinrichs VIII. von England. Nach Zwinglis Tod wurde dank Bucers Initiative die Abendmahlsfrage einer Klärung nähergebracht. Dieser inhaltsreiche Band ist gegenüber den Regesten um 14 Neufunde erweitert. Textkritisch sind die 35 Briefe an Camerarius hervorzuheben, die erstmals im ursprünglichen Wortlaut geboten werden.

These volumes are the first in a series containing works by Erasmus'that concern literature and education': interests which to him were scarcely separable. The aim of Erasmian education was a civilized life, expressed in Christian piety and the fulfilment of public and private duties and embellished by learning and literature. Towards these ends the soundest training for youth was what Erasmus often called bonne litterae,'good letters,'a literary and rhetorical training based on Greek and Latin authors. For centuries the classical curriculum was the core of liberal education, and Erasmus was long regarded as its exemplar. Though never a university teacher except briefly at Cambridge (1311-14), he was a'teacher of teachers'through his treatises on pedagogy and rhetoric and his many works of scholarship. The four works presented here in annotated translations are characteristic expressions of his dedication to learning and his confidence in the values of classical literature for the modern world of his time. Antibarbari (1520), translated and annotated by Margaret Mann Phillips, is a defence of the humanities against ignorant and misguided critics who question both their supposed worth and the appropriateness of pagan writings for Christian pupils. The reply of Erasmus becomes a manifesto on behalf of reason, scholarship, and literature. As for paganism, he insists that if secular knowledge is used properly it cannot harm but must help Christians.'None of the liberal disciplines is Christian'because they all antedated Christianity, yet they'all concern Christ'because they can be put to Christian uses. Parabolae (1514), translated and annotated by R.A.B. Mynors, a work that'contributes eminently to style,'is a collection of similitudes drawn from observations of men, customs, and nature. Many are culled from Plutarch and Seneca, but for those from Seneca, and from Aristotle, the moral applications are added by Erasmus. As an exercise in the rhetoric of moral philosophy -'many jewels in one small box,'Erasmus terms it-this book quickly became popular and long remained so. De copia (1512), translated and annotated by Betty I. Knott, is not a plan for the entire curriculum but a treatise on the'abundant'or rich style in writing and speaking Latin, a guide to attaining fluency and variety in discourse. As a manual for students De copia broke new ground. It was a remarkably successful work, used in schools in many lands for generations. From 1312 to 1600, more than 130 printings are recorded. De ratione studii (1312), translated and annotated by Brian McGregor, furnishes a concise but clear exposition of the curriculum, text, and methods of Erasmus'programme for liberal studies in grammar schools. Here as in all of his writings on education, language is the heart of the matter. The main goals are accurate, effective expression and communication in Latin, though Erasmus expects much besides literature to be learned from the study of literature. He emphasizes the necessity for competent and sympathetic teachers. Each translation is introduced by the translator, and a general introduction by the editor discusses the significance of each of the works, its relation to the others, and its subsequent fortunes.
