The exploration of sustainable lignocellulosic nanomaterials with unique properties and applicable functions is receiving growing interest. In this work, holocellulose nanofibrils (HCNFs) were prepared from moso bamboo using mild alkaline peroxide bleaching method (MAPB) followed by mechanical nanofibrillation. MAPB was proved to effectively remove lignin and retain hemicellulose. Meanwhile, partial allomorphic changes from cellulose I to cellulose II were revealed together with varying degrees of crystallinity. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) experiment showed an increasing thermal stability trend due to more allomorphic changes into anti-parallel cellulose II. Well-dispersed HCNFs suspensions were successfully prepared by homogenization and HCNFs films with high transparency and flexibility were fabricated. The films reached the maximum tensile strength of 55.8 MPa and tensile strain of 1.55 % along with a calculated toughness of 25 MJ/m3. Moreover, the prepared materials are biocompatible and completely non-toxic, which will theoretically support the application of HCNFs materials in fields of biology, medicine and food industry. The necessity for the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the growing demand for the improvement of biorefinery technologies, and the development of new biorefining concepts oblige us as a society, and particularly us, as scientists, to develop novel biorefinery approaches. The purpose of this study is to thoroughly evaluate the leftover lignocellulosic (LC) biomass obtained after the manufacture of 2-furaldehyde, with the intention of further valorizing this resource. This study demonstrates that by using thermomechanical and alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping techniques, birch wood chips can be used in the new biorefinery processing chain for the production of 2-furaraldehyde, acetic acid, and cellulose pulp. In addition, the obtained lignocellulosic residue is also characterized. To produce a lignocellulosic material without pentoses and with the greatest amount of cellulose fiber preserved for future use, a novel bench-scale reactor technology is used. Studies were conducted utilizing orthophosphoric acid as a catalyst to deacetylate and dehydrate pentose monosaccharides found in birch wood, converting them to 2-furaldehyde and acetic acid. The results showed that, with the least amount of admixtures, the yields of the initial feedstock's oven-dried mass (o.d.m.) of 2-furaldehyde, acetic acid, and lignocellulose residue ranged from 0.04 to 10.84%, 0.51 to 6.50%, and 68.13 to 98.07%, respectively, depending on the pretreatment conditions utilized. The ideal 2-furaldehyde production conditions with reference to the purity and usability of cellulose in residual lignocellulosic material were also discovered through experimental testing. The experiment that produced the best results in terms of 2-furaldehyde yield and purity of residual lignocellulose used a catalyst concentration of 70%, a catalyst quantity of 4%, a reaction temperature of 175 °C, and a treatment period of 60 min. It was possible to create pulp with a tensile index similar to standard printing paper by mechanically pulping the necessary LC residue with alkaline peroxide, proving that stepwise 2-furaldehyde production may be carried out with subsequent pulping to provide a variety of value-added goods. Flax is a commercial crop grown in many parts of the world both for its seeds and for its fibers. The seed-based flax variety (linseed) is considered less for its fiber after the seed is extracted. In this study, linseed straw was utilized and processed to extract fiber and cellulose through optimization of retting time and a multi-step alkaline peroxide extraction process using the Taguchi design of experiment (DOE). Effects of retting duration on fiber properties as well as effects of solvent concentration, reaction temperature, and time on removal of non-cellulosic fiber components were studied using the gravimetric technique, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermal studies. Based on these findings, retting for 216 h at room temperature should offer adequate retting efficiency and fiber characteristics; 70% cellulose yield was extracted successfully from linseed straw fiber using 75% ethanol–toluene at 98 °C for 4 h, 6% NaOH at 75 °C for 30 min, and 6% H2O2 at 90 °C for 120 min. Lignocellulose materials, essentially consisting of lignin, cellulose and hemicelluloses, are abundant sources of fermentable sugars. The bast fiber of Crotalaria juncea (Sunn hemp), a native cover crop of India, was used as feedstock for this study. The primary objective of this study was to add value to the waste C. juncea bast fiber. The same was achieved by pretreating the waste fiber using alkaline peroxide solution at various process conditions. The optimal process condition for alkaline peroxide pretreatment was identified for the fiber to pretreatment solution (S/S) ratio of 1/40 at 50°C for 5h with respect to all response variables (lignin removal, hemicellulose recovery, recovery of solid pretreated material, and crystallinity of lignocellulose). Three-way ANOVA results revealed that S/S ratio had no significant effect; whereas, both temperature and time, and the combination of parameters, exhibited significant effect on response variables. The characteristic peaks associated with lignin and cellulose demonstrated a higher amount of lignin removal and increased cellulose content with elevated treatment time. Autoclave assisted pretreatment proved to be inefficient due to removal of lower amount of lignin in addition to higher hemicellulose degradation. On the other hand, pretreatment using ultrasound was found to be most effective in removing lignin, liberating hemicelluloses along with diminition in cellulose crystallinity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the biological activity of polysaccharides and their derivatives has been widely studied. However, in addition to the natural polysaccharides directly extracted from plants and animals, there are rich polysaccharides in the pulping waste liquor that have not been fully utilized. The extracted polysaccharide from eucalyptus Alkaline Peroxide Mechanical Pulping (APMP) waste liquor was used as a raw material. For the production of carboxymethyl polysaccharide, the effects of temperature (T), the amount of alkali (NaOH) and the amount of etherifying agent (ClCH 2 COOH) on the degree of substitution (DS) were investigated, the optimal preparation conditions are: reaction time 2 h, temperature 75 °C, and the molar ratio of polysaccharide, NaOH and ClCH2COOH is 1:1:2, the highest DS is 1.47; FT-IR, NMR and GPC were used to characterize the structure and Molecular weight, the results show that the polysaccharide of APMP waste liquor is rich in xylan, and it was proved that the carboxymethyl substitution was successful and the positions of the substituent group were determined. Effects of alkaline peroxide (AP) treatment on chemical compositions and characteristics of lignocellulosic nanofibrils (LCNFs) were investigated. The AP treatment was conducted on a wood powder (Liriodendron tulipifera) at 80 °C for 1 or 5 h with different hydrogen peroxide concentrations (0.2 to 12 wt%) to selectively remove hemicelluloses and lignin. The treated wood powder was then defibrillated using wet-disk milling (WDM). The hemicelluloses and lignin in the LCNFs were successfully reduced to the ranges of 6.0% to 23.6% and 13.0% to 30.0%, respectively, depending upon the AP treatment conditions. The defibrillation efficiency improved as the hemicelluloses and lignin were removed, which reduced the LCNF dimensions. The filtration time increased with decreasing lignin and hemicellulose contents. The cellulose crystallinity and surface area of the LCNFs increased with decreasing lignin and hemicellulose contents. Production of high value-added products from lignocelluloses is an economically sustainable alternative to decreasing dependence on fossil fuels and making the chemical processes environmentally friendly. In this study, different methodologies of alkaline (Ca(OH)2 and NaOH), dilute acid (10%w/w H2SO4), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), alkaline peroxide oxidation (H2O2/Ca(OH)2 and H2O2/NaOH), and molten hydrated salt (MHS) mediated (ZnCl2.4H2O) pretreatments were employed in the hydrolysis of corncob amenable to enzymatic hydrolysis. Optimal enzyme hydrolysis temperature (considering 45 and 50 °) and time (2, 24, 72, and 96 h) were investigated for each pretreatment procedure to ascertain the concentrations of glucose, xylose, and total sugar present in the corncob. At 45 ° and 96 h, NaOH alkaline pretreatment achieved the best optimum total sugar production of 75.54 mg/mL (about 54% and 88% increments compared to dilute acid pretreatment (35.06 mg/mL total sugars) and MHS (9.32 mg/mL total sugar) pretreatment respectively). In this study, total sugars production increased appreciably at 45 ° and longer hydrolysis period (96 h) compared to hydrolysis at 50 ° (with maximum total sugars production of 18.00 mg/mL at 96 h). An enzymatic method for the carbohydrate hydrolysis of different microalgae biomass cultivated in domestic (DWB) and pig manure (PMWB) wastewaters, at different storage conditions (fresh, freeze-dried and reconstituted), was evaluated. The DWB provided sugars yields between 40 and 63%, although low xylose yields (< 23.5%). Approximately 2% of this biomass was converted to byproducts as succinic, acetic and formic acids. For PMWB, a high fraction of the sugars (up to 87%) was extracted, but mainly converted into acetic, butyric and formic acids, which was attributed to the bacterial action. In addition, the performance of an alkaline-peroxide pretreatment, conducted for 1 h, 50 °C and H 2 O 2 concentrations from 1 to 7.5% (w/w), was essayed. The hydrolysis of pretreated microalgae supported a wide range of sugars extraction for DWB (55–90%), and 100% for PMWB. The effect of pretreatments by hydrothermolysis (180 °C; 15 min) and alkaline delignification (NaOH 5M; H 2 O 2 1%; 24 h) in citrus peel waste (CPW) was evaluated, as well as the effect on H 2 , organic acids and alcohols production, in addition to characterization of the microbial community involved in fermentation. Batch reactors at 37 °C were operated with 3 gTVS/L of CPW with allochthonous consortium (UASB reactor sludge; 2 gTVS/L) and autochthonous of CPW (1.5 gTVS/L) as inocula. H 2 production was higher in reactors with in natura CPW (13.31 mmol/L) compared to hydrothermolysis (8.19 mmol/L) and alkaline delignification (7.27 mmol/L). The acetogenic pathway was predominant in the in natura CPW (4,355 mg/L acetic acid). The most abundant genera in the in natura CPW and after hydrothermolysis were Clostridium (18.97 and 12.90%, respectively) and Ruminiclostridium (16.65 and 1.04%, respectively) commonly related to cellulolytic bacteria and/or H 2 production. Primary refined coarse softwood thermomechanical pulp was treated with alkaline peroxide prior to low-consistency (LC) refining. The effects of the pre-treatments on pulp quality, refinability, and electrical energy consumption were assessed. Four pre-treatments were conducted with alkali charges of 2.5 and 6% and peroxide charges of 3 and 4%. The pulps were refined to specific energies up to 600 kWh/t by multiple passes through an LC refiner at intensities of 90 and 150 kWh/t. It was found that alkaline peroxide treatments increased tear strength and protected the fibre from cutting, especially during high intensity refining below a specific energy of 300 kWh/t. Treatment with 6% NaOH and 4% or 3% H2O2 led to lower brightness gains and scattering coefficients but increased the tensile strength index by 31%, potentially lowering the total electrical energy required to achieve strong pulp. The enhancement of tensile strength caused by the highly alkaline peroxide mostly resulted from increased bonding, which was attributable to acid group generation rather than the promotion of further fibrillation during LC refining. Vineyard pruning residues were subjected to alkaline peroxide treatment for delignification. Experimental conditions maximizing lignin removal were determined by using Box–Behnken statistical experiment design. NaOH/Biomass, H 2 O 2 /Biomass and retention time were chosen as independent variables and percent lignin removal was the objective function. Experiments were done at constant Solid/Liquid ratio of 0.1 (w/w) and 135 °C. All parameters were found to have significant effect on lignin removal. Complete delignification was obtained in 120 min at a NaOH/Biomass ratio of 1.10 and a H 2 O 2 /Biomass ratio of 0.65. This study investigated the performance of recycled polypropylene (RPP)/peanut shell powder (PSP) composites with untreated PSP and treated PSP with alkaline peroxide. The RPP/PSP and RPP/PSPH2O2 composites were prepared by melt mixing and compression molding at different PSP loadings (10 wt.% to 40 wt.%). The samples were characterized by processing properties, tensile properties, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and water absorption behavior. The treated PSP enhanced the stabilization torque, tensile strength, elongation at break, tensile modulus, and water absorption of RPP/PSP-H2O2 composites. Alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp (APMP) is a newly emerging high yield pulp (HYP) with numerous advantages. However, the drawback of the alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp from untreated plant biomass is its poor network strength. In this work, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CHPTAC) modification was proposed to enhance pulp network strength by fiber surface modification that could enhance fiber bonding. Three factors were analyzed by response surface methodology (RSM) to optimize treatment conditions based on factorial designs. The results showed that the optimal conditions were CHPTAC dosage of 0.8% (oven-dry pulp), NaOH dosage of 0.1% (oven-dry pulp), and pulp concentration of 8%. The modified pulp fibers were characterized by elemental analysis, charge density analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravity analysis (TGA), and internal bond strength analysis, as well as zero span tensile analysis. The physical strength of the modified APMP pulp was increased in terms of tensile index, tear index, and burst index. After modification, the tensile index, tear index, and burst index increased by 35.3%, 29.2%, and 16.7% respectively. In this work, the surface of oil palm mesocarp fiber (OPMF) was modified via alkaline-peroxide treatment with hydrogen peroxide under alkaline conditions. The effect of the treatment on the chemical composition and microstructure of the fiber was examined using chemical analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The treatment resulted in the removal of lignin, hemicellulose, and waxy substances from the fiber and increased its surface roughness and crystallinity. The eco-friendly biocomposite was made from poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and chemically treated fiber at a weight ratio of 30:70, and was fabricated via a melt-blending technique followed by hot-pressed moulding. The results indicated that alkaline-peroxide treatment of the fiber improved the tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break of the OPMF/PBS biocomposite by 54, 830, and 43%, respectively. The SEM analysis revealed improvement of the interfacial adhesion between the chemically treated fiber and the PBS. The current study explores alkaline and alkaline peroxide pretreatments in order to achieve a method to improve saccharification of agricultural residues for ethanol production. The effects of reagent concentration and pretreatment time at 30 °C and atmospheric pressure on biomass dissolution after the pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of the pretreated biomass were investigated. In fact, although all pretreatments tested improved enzymatic hydrolysis of native residues, the best results were not achieved for the highest biomass loss. The maximum conversions to reducing sugars in the hydrolysis stage of 77.5% and 92.6% were obtained for rice hulls and straw pretreated by alkaline peroxide (4%, 24 h) and alkaline (1%, 48 h) methods, respectively. For both pretreated residues, the reduction to more than half the recommended enzyme loading allowed obtaining more than 94% the reducing sugars attained with the recommended dose. The compositions of the organic pollutants of chemi-mechanical pulping wastewater were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectra and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) was approximately 18110 mg/L, and the ratio of biological oxygen demand to COD (BOD5/COD) was approximately 0.17, due to low biodegradability. In this study, Phanerochaete chrysosporium was selected and the changes in bacterial culture time required to transform pulping wastewater and the metabolites present before and after pretreatment in the wastewater were identified. A decline in the components of the pulping wastewater was observed. Initially, 43 kinds of organic compounds were detected in the raw water. After 3 days of treatment, only 21 organic compounds were detected. Then, 7 days later, the organic pollutants in the waste amounted to only 7 organic compounds. Through the analysis of analysis of P-RC APMP pulping wastewater and that treated by Phanerochaete chrysosporium using GCMS, the relative content of organic acids was 12.4%, in which phenylpropionic acid had the highest concentration of 11.3%. An efficient scheme was developed for the conversion of wheat straw (WS) into bioethanol, silica and lignin. WS was pre-extracted with 0.2 mol/L sodium hydroxide at 30 °C for 5 h to remove about 91% of initial silica. Subsequently, the alkaline-pretreated solids were subjected to alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) pretreatment with 40 mg hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 )/g biomass at 50 °C for 7 h to prepare highly digestible substrate. The results of enzymatic hydrolysis demonstrated that the sequential alkaline-AHP pretreated WS was efficiently hydrolyzed at 10% (w/v) solids loading using an enzyme dosage of 10 mg protein/g glucan. The total sugar conversion of 92.4% was achieved. Simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) was applied to produce ethanol from the two-stage pretreated substrate using Saccharomyces cerevisiae SR8u strain. Abstract: The effect of alkaline peroxide bleaching on the total anionic groups (AGs) and surface AGs in aspen chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) fibers was investigated. Alkaline treatment, especially alkaline peroxide bleaching resulted in the formation of new AGs and surface AGs in the CTMP fibers. The carboxylic groups in uronic acid units, including 4-O-methylglucuronic acid, galacturonic acid, and glucuronic acid units were the main contributors to the AGs in the fibers. However, the oxidized lignin accounting for more than 30% of the total AGs in the bleached CTMP fibers, was the main origin of the new AGs formed during the peroxide bleaching. In addition, the new AGs were also formed by extensive deesterification of the residual esterified uronic acids in pectins and lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs). Although some uronic acid units were dissolved in the process water, both the total AGs and surface AGs in the fibers increased after alkaline peroxide bleaching. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Low-pressure steam explosion (LPSE) combined with alkaline peroxide (AP) pretreatment was first employed to separate hemicellulose from Lespedeza stalks. The monosaccharide composition and molecular weight distribution of the obtained hemicellulose fractions were characterized in this study. The results show that the hemicellulose extracted from Lespedeza stalks consisted of xylose, glucose, galactose, and mannose, which was a mixture of arabinoxylans and xyloglucans or β-glucans. The yield of hemicellulose fractions after AP pretreatment ranged from 11.2% (2.5% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), w/v for 12 h) to 12.2% (3.3% H2O2, w/v for 72 h). The molecular weight of hemicellulose decreased from 2,458 g/mol to 1,984 g/mol after AP pretreatment, indicating its degradation reaction. The structure of hemicellulose was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and heteronuclear single quantum coherence. The AP pretreatment partially cleaved the backbone and the ether linkage between lignin and hemicelluloses. Also, branched-chain α-Darabinofuranosyl in which β-D-xylose substituted at the C-3 position (monosubstituted) was removed, illustrating a partial debranching reaction. Therefore, the combination of low-pressure steam explosion and alkaline peroxide pretreatment (LPSE-AP) is an effective pretreatment method to separate hemicellulose from Lespedeza stalk. A combination of steam explosion (SE) and alkaline peroxide (AP) used to pretreat bamboo was investigated. Steam explosion at 224 °C for 4 min was applied to bamboo, and the pretreated bamboo was delignified by alkaline peroxide. Enzymatic hydrolysis was compared in the pretreated samples. Steam pretreatment led to remarkable hemicellulose solubilization (63.2%). Lignin solubilization (93.1%) was achieved by alkaline peroxide treatment of steam-pretreated bamboo at 80 °C for 1 h in 0.88% (v/v) H2O2, whereas only 33.4% of lignin was solubilized when using raw bamboo. Pretreatment methods resulted in a low degree of polymerization and increased hydrolysis of cellulose. A maximum glucose yield of 90.5% was achieved with a combined steam explosion and alkaline peroxide pretreatment. The surface structure of treated bamboo and the adsorption of enzyme on the substrate were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Delignification decreased enzyme adsorption and increased enzymatic conversion. Effects of dual-treatment on cellulose fiber quality, micro-structure appearance, crystalline structure, hydrogen bonds, and surface elements were analyzed using a fiber quality analyzer (FQA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. In comparison to the untreated pulp, the brightness of pulp increased by 51.71%, whereas the apparent density and burst strength index of the pulpboard decreased by 11.76% and 48.18%, respectively. The absorption time, absorbability, and bulk of the fiber obtained by defibering the pulpboard decreased by 47.40%, 8.33%, and 5.32%, respectively, when it had been subjected to supplementary alkali. With the analysis of FQA and SEM, fiber swelled and curled, its surface was relatively smooth, and filaments of its partial surface area were exposed as a result of the supplementary alkali. Additionally, XRD analysis, FT-IR analysis, and XPS scanning spectra all showed that the crystallinity degree of fiber decreased by 45.10%, indicating more crystal structures were converted into amorphous structures. The proportion of total intra-molecular hydrogen bond intensity to total hydrogen bonds increased. The -OH content on fiber surface only decreased by 4.15%, compared with those of the untreated pulp, when the fiber was subjected to the two-step chemical treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this work was to develop a feasible ball mill-assisted alkaline peroxide pretreatment followed by stepwise hydrolysis to improve the yield of xylo -oligosaccharides (XOS) and fermentable sugars. The hydrogen peroxide charge, ball-milling time, and solid-to-liquid ratio affected the compositions, particle sizes, morphology, and crystallinity of the corn stover, directly improving the following hydrolytic efficiency. The optimal pretreatment was with 0.45 g/g (H 2 O 2 : substrate) and 1:3 solid-to-liquid ratio (w/v) for 1.0 h ball-milling, resulting in 84.29% delignification. Physicochemical properties of the pretreated samples were characterized and their correlations to the enzymatic hydrolysis were revealed. Compared with one-step cellulase hydrolysis, the two-step xylanase-cellulase hydrolysis of the pretreated corn stover showed significant advance in preparing XOS, producing 69.65% (on the base of xylan content in pretreated sample) of XOS, along with 20.55% xylose, 68.94% glucose, and 21.15% gluco -oligosaccharides. In a paper mill's water circuit, normal runnability of the paper machine is often disturbed due to buildup of hydrophobic dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS), such as wood pitch, white pitch, and stickies. General cationic fixing agents such as hydrophilic polymers do not always work to minimize these problems. In the present study, two kinds of novel hydrophobically associating polyethylenimine (PEI) coagulants grafted by acetic anhydride and 1,2-epoxydodecane, named PEI-Ac and PEI-Ed, respectively, were synthesized to remove hydrophobic DCS. The performances of the modified PEI samples were evaluated using a model suspension containing alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp (APMP) and styrene-butadiene latex. The results showed that the modified PEI was more inclined to interact with hydrophobic substances than was nonmodified PEI. The relationship between DCS removal and non-modified or modified PEI content was not linear, but there was a maximum. The turbidity and particle counts of model suspensions decreased 30% and 80%, respectively, when the dosage of PEI-Ed(a) was 0.025%. Compared with the 72.8% decrease in the case of non-modified PEI, cationic demand decreased by 67.7% when the PEI-Ed(a) concentration was 0.2%. The study is aiming at the finding of optimal pulping conditions for the alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping process applied to larch in terms of brightness (% ISO) and tensile strength (TS). Based on three variables, the Box-Behnken experimental design was applied to determine the effects of the first-stage and second-stage dosages of H2O2 and the impregnation temperature on % ISO and TS. The equations based on the quadratic regression analysis were developed, which describe the response behaviors as the simultaneous functions of the selected independent variables. The best brightness achieved was 75.4% ISO under the following conditions: first-stage H2O2 3.5%, second-stage H2O2 3.54%, and impregnation temperature 81.4°C. Eucalyptus wood is among the most important biomass resource in the world. Wood mechanical defibration and fibrillation are energy-intensive processes utilized not only to produce pulp for papermaking, but also to produce reinforcement fibers for biocomposites, nanocellulose, or pretreat lignocellulosic material for biofuels production. The structural features of different Eucalyptus hybrids affecting the refining energy consumption and produced fiber furnish properties were evaluated. The defibration and fiber development were performed using an alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping (APMP) process, which included chelation followed by an alkaline peroxide treatment prior to wood chip defibration. Despite the similar wood densities and chemical compositions of different Eucalyptus hybrids, there was a clear difference in the extent of defibration and fibrillation among the hybrids. The high energy consumption was related to a high amount of guaiacyl lignin. This observation is of major importance when considering the optimal wood hybrids for mechanical wood defibration and for understanding the fundamental phenomena taking place in chemi-mechanical defibration of wood. The molecular weight distribution and composition of organic pollutants from chemi-mechanical pulping waste liquor was studied using ultra-filtration, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The concentration of dissolved chemical organic compounds was approximately 1.81 × 104 mg·L-1. In addition, the wastewater had poor biodegradability. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) was primarily composed of small molecular organic pollutants, and the larger pollutants in the waste liquor were its primary source of color. The data indicated that there were chromophoric and auxochrome groups in the waste liquor. The waste liquor contained 38 types of organic pollutants, which were aromatic compounds, including phenols, ketones, alcohols, and fatty acids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The steam pre-treatment with low severity preserves valuable biomass components, and further delignification with alkaline peroxide could improve hydrolysis. A combination of low severity steam pretreatment and alkaline peroxide post-treatment of Lespedeza stalks was investigated. The post-treatment of steam-pretreated Lespedeza stalks with alkaline peroxide significantly increased the cellulose content and changed the structure of the cellulose-rich fractions. A glucose yield of 503.5mgg−1 raw material from enzyme hydrolysis was obtained when the steam-pretreated material (184°C for 4min) was post-treated with 2% hydrogen peroxide at 60°C for 24h with a substrate concentration of 3.3%. Its hydrolysis yield is 88.8%, which is higher than that of samples processed by steam pretreatment alone (63.7%). The samples obtained by post-treatment with alkaline peroxide were found to have a smoother surface and looser structure in scanning electron microscopy images. The isolated lignin preparations had a yield range from 10.9 to 14.7 (% dry matter). The lignin was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis/differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. Alkaline peroxide treatment increased the thermal stability of lignin, and decreased the amounts of all functional groups. As part of a program to reduce electrical energy consumption in the refining process, the effects of the ozone and alkaline peroxide treatments on fibre and handsheet properties, prior and subsequent to low consistency (LC) refining, were assessed and compared by applying different levels of ozone and a range of peroxide and alkali charges to a primary stage hemlock thermomechanical pulp (TMP). Both highly alkaline peroxide treatments and ozone treatments decreased the specific energy required for strong mechanical pulp. The improvement in pulp strength through alkaline peroxide treatment mainly resulted from pulp surface changes caused by generation of acid groups. The highly alkaline peroxide treatments significantly increased pulp brightness but did not promote the further fibrillation during the subsequent LC refining. On the other hand, ozone treatments provided tensile strength increases, along with small brightness enhancements for the dark hemlock TMP, and increased the tensile gains obtained through LC refining. The effects of ozone treatments on tensile strength before and after LC refining were the result of pulp surface modifications, fibre swelling, and loss of fibre wall integrity due to non-selective chemical attack. Abstract: Bamboo is an alternative feedstock for the production of fine chemicals, such as fuel ethanol and lactic acid, because bamboo has a large amount of sugars. An effective pretreatment method for enzyme saccharification is required for the efficient production of these materials. Enzyme saccharification (48h) using a 35atm and 5min steam exploded bamboo produced 426 and 488mg/(g initial dry sample) of glucose and reducing sugar, respectively. In addition, pretreatments using 20atm and 5min steam explosion or mechanical milling for 5min followed by 10wt.% sodium hydroxide treatment at 121°C for 60min were attempted in order to enhance the digestibility of the holocellulose component. Both of these pretreatment methods had a large positive effect on the production of sugars by subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. In particular, the maximum value of glucose production was obtained by the 20atm steam explosion and 10wt.% sodium hydroxide treatment. This produced 456mg/(g initial dry sample) of glucose and 460mg/(g initial dry sample) of reducing sugar. In comparison, the mechanical milling and 10wt.% sodium hydroxide treatment produced 383 and 485mg/(g initial dry sample) of glucose and reducing sugar, respectively. From these results, it was concluded that the pretreatment with 20atm steam explosion and 10wt.% sodium hydroxide treatment was the most effective pretreatment method for the production of glucose from bamboo by enzyme saccharification. However, since this pretreatment method requires the severe conditions of both high pressure and temperature steam explosion and high concentration sodium hydroxide, an alkaline peroxide pretreatment without a steam explosion and high concentration sodium hydroxide was also attempted. A comparatively large amounts of glucose and reducing sugar production, i.e. 399 and 568mg/(g initial dry sample), respectively, were obtained in 1%(v/v) hydrogen peroxide and 1wt.% sodium hydroxide treatment at 90°C for 60min. Using a multi-effect evaporation system to concentrate the effluent from alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping (APMP) plants is known to require a high energy consumption. In order to improve the situation, a polyethersulfone membrane was used to concentrate the effluent of APMP plants beforehand. An orthogonal experimental design was applied and a mathematical model was established to optimize the filtration parameters. An estimation of potential energy and water savings from this new concentration process was developed. The optimal filtration conditions obtained were: molecular weight cut-off at 10,000 Dalton, trans-membrane pressure at 3 bar, feed temperature at 50°C, cross-flow velocity at 420 rpm, and volume reduction fa1ctor at 0.93. The average permeate flux under these conditions was 45.31 l/m2.h. The total solids content was increased from 14.74 g/l in the feed to 95.04 g/l in the concentrate. The permeate had low total solid contents of 8.75 g/l, Chemical Oxygen Demand of 6696 mg/l, and Biochemical Oxygen Demand of 4383 mg/l. Such qualities would allow the permeate to be reused in the alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping process. Abstract: The cellulose content of substrate is one of the most important factors for ethanol production from lignocellulose. To increase the cellulose content of substrate and ethanol yield in simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF), a pretreatment method coupling steam explosion with alkaline peroxide for wheat straw was studied. After the complex pretreatment, the cellulose content in wheat straw increased from 31.5% to 67.2%. In the hydrolysate of wheat straw pretreated with the complex method and steam explosion, the glucose concentration was 110.9g/L and 67.8g/L, respectively. The optimal conditions for SSF were 40°C, 120h, cellulase loading 40FPU/(g wheat straw), yeast inoculum 10% (v/v) and substrate concentration 16.7% (w/v). Under the optimal conditions, the total ethanol concentration in SSF of wheat straw pretreated with steam explosion and alkaline peroxide reached 51.5g/L, and an overall yield of 81.1% was obtained. Abstract: In these studies, alkaline peroxide pretreatment of wheat straw was investigated. Pretreated wheat straw was hydrolyzed using cellulolytic and xylanolytic enzymes, and the hydrolysate was used to produce butanol using Clostridium beijerinckii P260. The culture produced less than 2.59gL−1 acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) from alkaline peroxide wheat straw hydrolysate (APWSH) that had not been treated to reduce salt concentration (a neutralization product). However, fermentation was successful after inhibitors (salts) were removed from the hydrolysate by electrodialysis. A control glucose fermentation resulted in the production of 21.37gL−1 ABE, while salt removed APWSH resulted in the production of 22.17gL−1 ABE. In the two fermentations, reactor productivities were 0.30 and 0.55gL−1 h−1, respectively. A comparison of use of different substrates (corn fiber, wheat straw) and different pretreatment techniques (dilute sulfuric acid, alkaline peroxide) suggests that generation of inhibitors is substrate and pretreatment specific. Abstract: Rice hulls used in this study contained 35.62±0.12% cellulose and 11.96±0.73% hemicellulose. Alkaline H2O2 pretreatment and enzymatic saccharification methods were evaluated for conversion of rice hull cellulose and hemicellulose to simple sugars. The yield of sugars from diluted alkaline peroxide pretreated (7.50% H2O2, v/v; pH 11.5; 35°C; 24h) rice hulls (15.0%, w/v) after enzymatic saccharification (45°C, pH 5.0, 72h) by three commercial enzyme preparations (cellulase, β-glucosidase, and xylanase) using 0.12ml of each enzyme preparation per g hulls was 428±12mg/g (90% yield). During the pretreatment, no measurable furfural and hydroxymethyl furfural were produced. The almost complete conversion (96%) of rice hulls to sugars was achieved by saccharifying the liquid and solid fractions separately after alkaline peroxide pretreatment. The concentration of ethanol from alkaline peroxide pretreated, enzyme saccharified rice hull (39g) hydrolyzate by recombinant Escherichia coli strain FBR5 at pH 6.5 and 35°C in 24h was 8.2±0.2g/l with a yield of 0.49g/g available sugars (0.21g/g hulls). The ethanol concentration was 8.0±0.2g/l with a yield of 0.20g/g hulls in the case of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation by the E. coli strain at pH 6.0 and 35°C in 48h. Olive tree biomass (OTB) can be used for producing second generation bioethanol. In this work, extracted OTB was subjected to fractionation using a sequential acid/alkaline oxidative pretreatment. In the first acid stage, the effects of sulfuric acid concentration and reaction times at 130 °C were investigated. Up to 71% solubilization of hemicellulosic sugars was achieved under optimized conditions (2.4% H 2 SO 4 , 84 min). In the second stage, the influence of hydrogen peroxide concentration and process time were evaluated at 80 °C. Approximately 80% delignification was achieved under the best operational conditions (7% H 2 O 2 , 90 min) within the experimental range studied. This pretreatment produced a substrate with 72% cellulose that was highly accessible to enzymatic attack, yielding 82 g glucose/100 g glucose in delignified OTB. Ethanol production from both hemicellulosic sugars solubilized in the acid pretreatment and glucose from enzymatic hydrolysis of delignified OTB yielded 15 g ethanol/100 g OTB. Two-stage treatments of Caligonum monogoliacum and Tamarix spp. with acidic organosolv and alkaline peroxide were performed. Pre-treatment with ethanol–H2O (60/40, v/v) under acid catalyst (0.2 N HCl) at 70 °C for 4 h released 18.7 and 17.8% hemicelluloses from dewaxed C. monogoliacum and Tamarix spp., respectively, Sequential treatment with 2% H2O2 at pH 11.5 for 16 h at 45 °C solubilized 26.2 and 26.5% hemicelluloses from pre-treated C. monogoliacum and Tamarix spp., respectively. Cellulose predominated in the insoluble residues, accounting for 36.7–37.8% of dry materials. It was found that the two alkaline peroxide soluble hemicellulosic preparations contained a much higher amount of xylose (74.1–77.3%) but lower in glucose (7.4–18.6%), galactose (3.0–8.3%), rhamnose (2.3–2.9%), mannose (0.8–2.7%), and arabinose (1.3–1.4%) than those of the two acidic organosolv soluble hemicellulosic fractions in which xylose (31.8–50.8%), glucose (21.4–30.3%), galactose (7.6–24.1%), and rhamnose (5.7–10.1%) were the major sugar components. The content of uronic acids was slightly higher in the two alkaline peroxide soluble hemicellulosic preparations (7.5–8.3%) than the two acidic organosolv soluble hemicellulosic fractions (5.0–6.5%). Furthermore, the studies showed that the two alkaline peroxide soluble hemicellulosic preparations were more linear and acidic, and had a large molecular mass (M¯w, 27,220–31,410 g mol−1) than the two acidic organosolv soluble hemicellulosic fractions (M¯w, 13,820–18,380 g mol−1). Lignin content and its composition associated in the four isolated hemicelluloses were determined by alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation and monitored with HPLC. No significant differences in lignin content (5.94–9.82%) and its composition were found. Further comparative study of the four hemicellulosic preparations and two cellulosic fractions was carried by both degraded methods such as acid hydrolysis and thermal analysis and non-degradation techniques such as FT-IR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Eight hemicellulosic fractions were obtained by sequential treatment of dewaxed barley straw with 0.1 M NaOH at 45 °C for 3 h, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0% H2O2 at 45 °C for 3 h at pH 11.5, and 10% KOH–1% Na2B4O7·10H2O at 28 °C for 15 h under continuous agitation. The yields of the fractions were 8.0, 3.1, 3.3, 3.3, 2.2, 2.0, 2.0, and 9.9%, respectively, of the initial amount of barley straw, corresponding to the dissolution of 21.6, 8.4, 8.9, 8.9, 5.9, 5.4, 5.4, and 26.7% of the original hemicelluloses. Meanwhile, the successive treatment also solubilized 29.1, 15.8, 14.6, 10.8, 4.5, 3.2, 2.7, and 3.7% of the original lignin, respectively. This sequential extraction together resulted in dissolution of 91.1% of the original hemicelluloses and 84.8% of the original lignin. The 0.1 M NaOH-soluble hemicellulosic fraction contained mainly xylose, glucose, and arabinose, 44.2, 15.7, and 15.2%, respectively, while the 10% KOH–1% Na2B4O7·10H2O-soluble fraction predominated in xylose, 75.0%. The six alkaline peroxide-soluble fractions were composed of 50.3–54.4% xylose, 14.7–16.9% arabinose, 6.8–10.7% glucose, 6.8–8.5% glucuronic acid or 4-O-methyl-d-glucuronic acid, 0.4–1.5% mannose, and 0.3–1.2% rhamnose. All the hemicellulosic fractions contained substantial amounts of glucuronoarabinoxylans and noticeable quantities of β-glucans. In comparison, the six hemicellulosic fractions, isolated with alkaline peroxide, had much higher molecular weights (56,890–63,810 g mol−1) than those of the two hemicellulosic preparations (28,000–29,080 g mol−1), isolated with alkali in the absence of hydrogen peroxide. Fouling is one of the most common problems encountered when using membranes in treatment applications of papermaking wastewater. The alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping (APMP) process has been widely adopted all over the world. However, reports on the membrane treatment of APMP plant effluent are relatively rare. It is mainly attributed to the high operational cost of membrane recovery and replacement. So, we originally investigated the cleaning protocols for the polyethersulfone (PES) membranes fouled by APMP plant effluent. To maximize flux recovery, four chemical cleaning protocols were explored to clean the fouled membranes. Parameters evaluated included flux recovery percent, total solids, dichromate chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), and color retentions of membranes. Scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive x-ray analyzer (SEM-EDX) and attenuated total reflection Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were employed to give a more precise assessment of the cleaning processes. Results showed that the cleaning protocol of '0.2 wt% Triton X-100+absorbent cotton' presented the strongest cleaning effectiveness for the fouled PES membranes. Flux of the fouled membrane recovered to 98.5% that of the pristine membrane, and the retention of total solids, CODCr, BOD5, and color of the cleaned membrane were approximate to those of the pristine membrane. Effects of alkaline peroxide (AP) pre-treatment were investigated with respect to the extracted cellulose fibres from the vascular bundles of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) fronds (OPF) rachis at different AP concentrations. The extracted fibres were prepared through the mechanical fibrillation resulting from the AP pre-treatment concentrations of the rachis. The cellulose fibres obtained were characterized using microscopic (SEM), spectroscopic (FTIR), thermal (TGA-DTG), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The screen pulp yield was between 38.07% and 42.69%, which increased with the increase in the AP concentrations. The SEM showed a significant separation of the fibres after the AP pretreatment. FTIR spectroscopy and TGA showed significant dissolution of both lignin and hemicellulose molecules from the treated biomass at higher alkaline peroxide concentrations. The thermal stability of the extracted fibres ranged from 366 °C to 392 °C while the XRD results showed that the cellulose fibre extracted at H2O2/NaOH ratio of 2.5%: 2.0%,w/v AP concentrations gave the highest percentage crystallinity (35.7%). The handsheet made from the cellulose fibre showed that tensile, burst, and tear indexes increased with an increase in AP concentration. A pilot-scale membrane process for the concentration of effluent from an alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping (APMP) plant was investigated. Specifically, the cross-flow velocity and volume reduction were optimized again for a higher flux and a lower system energy consumption. A mathematical model was established to obtain the optimal parameters. Estimates were obtained of the expected savings in energy and water. The obtained optimal concentration conditions were: molecular weight cut-off at 10,000 Dalton, trans-membrane pressure at 3 bar, feed temperature at 50°C, cross-flow velocity at 2 m/s, and volume reduction at 0.9. The average permeate flux under these conditions was 43.21 l/m².h. The total solids content was increased from 25.47 g/L in the feed to 128.36 g/L in the concentrate. The permeate had low total solids content of 11.03 g/L, Chemical Oxygen Demand of 9180 mg/l, and Biochemical Oxygen Demand of 5870 mg/L. Such qualities would allow the permeate to be reused in the APMP process after a light biochemical treatment. Abstract: A two-stage pretreatment method was proposed and tested for deconstruction of recalcitrant Miscanthus. During a 1st pretreatment at 50°C, 1.0–4.0% alkaline peroxide solutions were used to partially remove hemicellulose and lignin. The remaining solids were subjected to a 2nd pretreatment at 121°C with electrolyzed water. Using 15 filter paper units of cellulase per gram cellulose, a digestibility of 95% was achieved by the two-stage method, which was higher than 81% obtained from a 1% H2SO4 pretreatment (200°C, 8min). A mass balance for the two-stage process showed that 63% hemicellulose and 64% lignin were removed from the Miscanthus samples after the 1st pretreatment. The Scanning Electron Microscopy images and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy spectra revealed that after the 1st pretreatment, crystalline cellulose fibers were partially exposed and the linkages between residual lignin and hemicellulose disappeared. In this paper, the seven acid-insoluble lignin preparations from barley straw were first extracted with alkaline hydrogen peroxide in order to study how the delignification and degradation of the lignin is influenced by aqueous 1.5% H2O2 extractant to straw ratios. The results showed that treatment of dewaxed barley straw with 1.5% H2O2 at 45 °C for 14 h (pH 12.0) under the extractant to straw ratios of 10:1, 13:1, 15:1, 18:1, 20:1, 25:1, and 30:1 resulted in dissolution of 65.8%, 68.4%, 68.4%, 69.0%, 69.7%, 71.6%, and 72.3% of the original lignin and 78.7%, 79.8%, 82.3%, 83.4%, 84.8%, 85.3%, and 85.3% of the original hemicelluloses, respectively. The degraded seven lignin samples were analyzed with respect to their chemical compositions, content of chemically linked polysaccharides, molecular weights and structural changes. It was found that the alkaline peroxide treatment under the conditions given led to a noticeable increase in a amount of carboxyl groups due to the oxidation. The results from 13C-NMR analyses showed that the treatment was extremely effective for isolation of highly pure lignins from the straw, and the treatment under the conditions used did not affect the overall structure of lignin. The β-O-4 ether bond and β–β carbon–carbon linkage were found to be the major linkages between lignin units. Hydroxycinnamic acids, such as p-coumaric and ferulic acids, appeared to be strongly linked to lignin molecules, in which p-coumaric acid was found to be bonded to lignin by ester linkage, while ferulic acid was linked by its phenolic group via ether bond to lignin and also principally linked by its carboxyl group via ester bond to lignin and/or hemicelluloses. In the mechanical pulping process, some process state and product quality variables are difficult to measure on-line. In this paper, soft sensors were used to estimate Canadian Standard Freeness (CSF) and outlet consistency (Cout) after the high consistency refining stage of the alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping (APMP) process. After the secondary variables for modeling that are readily available processed measurements in pre-treatment and the HC refining stage was selected, models based on the case-based reasoning (CBR) method were developed to estimate CSF and Cout. The ability of CBR soft sensors to predict CSF and Cout was tested using data collected from an APMP mill, and the results were satisfactory. Additionally, two typical soft sensor methods that back propagation network (BP) algorithms and support vector regression algorithms (SVR) were employed to predict CSF and Cout and evaluate the performance of the CBR soft sensor. The effect of thermal, acid, alkaline and alkaline-peroxide pretreatments on the methane produced by the anaerobic digestion of wheat straw (WS) and sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was studied, using whole slurry and solid fraction. All the pretreatments released formic and acetic acids and phenolic compounds, while 5-hydroxymetilfurfural (HMF) and furfural were generated only by acid pretreatment. A remarkable inhibition was found in most of the whole slurry experiments, except in thermal pretreatment which improved methane production compared to the raw materials (29% for WS and 11% for SCB). The alkaline pretreatment increased biodegradability (around 30%) and methane production rate of the solid fraction of both pretreated substrates. Methane production results were fitted using first order or modified Gompertz equations, or a novel model combining both equations. An enzymatic mild acidic hydrolysis was used to separate and purify residual lignin from alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp (APMP). Using the optimum conditions for the laccase treatment (pH 4.5, temperature 50℃, lignin consistency of 1%, a reaction time of 60 min, and a laccase dosage of 8 µ/g), oven-dried lignin was treated with laccase and in a laccase mediator system (LMS) to explore the mechanism for laccase and the LMS modification of APMP. The changes of functional groups in lignin were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR and 13C-NMR). The molecular weight distributions of the lignin samples were confirmed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The 31P-NMR and 13C-NMR spectra revealed that the lignin structure changed significantly with the laccase and the LMS treatments. Meanwhile, GPC demonstrated that laccase without a mediator could lead to the polymerization of lignin, while the LMS could degrade the lignin. Abstract: Oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) are a lignocellulosic by product generated by palm oil mills. Delignified EFB fiber is a potential source of inexpensive hemicellulose, a substrate that is easily hydrolyzed to sugars for use in diverse biotechnological processes. The conditions for maximized selective removal of lignin from EFB fiber via separate treatments with alkaline peroxide and peracetic acid, were established such that the loss of hemicellulose was kept to a minimum. The amount of a reagent used in delignification, the temperature and the length of treatment, were optimized using a combination of Box–Behnken experimental design and the response surface method. Treatments with peracetic acid always left behind more hemicellulose and removed more lignin compared with the treatments involving alkaline peroxide. Under the best conditions (20 cm3 peracetic acid per g EFB, 35 °C, reaction time of 9 h), hemicellulose, cellulose and acid insoluble lignin constituted (dry weight basis) nearly 36%, 47% and ∼16%, respectively, of the treated acetone-washed extractive-free EFB fiber. The origin and kinetic changes of carboxyl groups in aspen chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) fibres during alkaline peroxide bleaching were evaluated. The results showed that the major contributors of carboxyl groups in aspen CTMP fibres were the 4-O-methylglucuronic acid, galacturonic acid and the carboxyl groups in oxidized lignin. Alkaline peroxide bleaching could increase the total carboxyl groups, surface charge and dissolved anionic substances. However, the excess degradation by superfluous hydroxide and peroxide could result in the reduction of carboxyl groups in fibres because of the production and dissolution of low-molar-mass substances. The total carboxyl groups from polysaccharides in fibres remained constant, and the increase of carboxyl groups in fibres should result from the carboxyl groups newly formed by the lignin oxidation during peroxide bleaching. Alkaline peroxide bleaching could also result in the removal of a large part of extractives and a small fraction of lignin on the fibre surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
