Abstract Gd3+- free carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized by one-step solvothermal method using urea, citric acid and 3-(trifluoromethyl)aniline as precursors. Additionally, Gd3+-doped CDs were prepared by incorporating gadolinium chloride (Gd3+ ions) into the synthesis. Size selection of the purified CDs was achieved through filter membranes ranging from 3 kDa to 100 kDa. The chemical composition and optical properties of the obtained samples were characterized by Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), proton relaxation time measurements, Ultraviolet–visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence spectroscopies. A comparative analysis revealed a strong size-dependent behavior in the optical properties of both Gd3+-doped and Gd3+-free CDs. Furthermore, in vitro tests confirmed the non-cytotoxicity of Gd3+-doped CDs, indicating their potential applicability in biomedicine for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and red fluorescence-based cell and tissue imaging.

Abstract Carbon dots (CDs) are easy-obtained nanoparticles with wide range of biological activity; however, their toxicity after prolonged exposure is poorly investigated. So, in vitro and in vivo toxicity of CDs with the surfaces enriched with hydroxylated hydrocarbon chains and methylene groups (CD_GE), carboxyl and phenol groups accompanied with nitrogen (CD_3011), trifluoromethyl (CDF19) or toluidine and aniline groups (CDN19) were aimed to be discovered. CDs’ in vitro toxicity was assessed on A549 cells (real-time cell analysis of impedance, fluorescence microscopy) after 24 h of incubation, and we observed no changes in cell viability and morphology. CDs’ in vivo toxicity was assessed on C57Bl6 mice after multiple dosages (5 mg/kg subcutaneously) for 14 days. Lethality (up to 50%) was observed in CDN19 and CD_3011 groups on different days of dosing, accompanied by toxicity signs in case of CD_3011. There were no changes in serum biochemical parameters except Urea (increased in CDF19 and CD_3011 groups), nor substantial kidney, liver, and spleen injuries. The most impactful for all organs were also CD_3011 and CDF19, causing renal tubule injury and liver blood supply violation. Thus, CDs with a surface enriched with oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups might be toxic after multiple everyday dosing, without, however, significant damages of internal organs in survived animals.

Fluorescent carbon nanodots are a promising nanomaterial for different applications in biophotonics, sensing and optical nanothermometry fields due to their strong fluorescence properties. However, their multi-modal applications are considerably limited, requiring the use of several nanoagents that could solve different tasks simultaneously. In this paper, we report the first experimental results on a facile “green” laser-based synthesis of multi-modal carbon–metallic nanocomposites with tuned optical performance. This simple approach leads to the appearance of finely controlled plasmonic properties in carbon-based nanocomposites whose spectral position is adapted by using an appropriate material. Thus, longer laser ablation provokes 29-fold increase in the absorption intensity of carbon–gold nanocomposites due to the increase in the metal content from 13% (30 s) to 53% (600 s). Despite strong plasmonic properties, the metal presence results in the quenching of the carbon nanostructures’ fluorescence (2.4-fold for C-Au NCs and 3.6-fold for C-Ag NCs for 600 s ablation time). Plasmonic nanocomposites with variable metal content reveal a ~3-fold increase in the laser-to-heat conversion efficiency of carbon nanodots matching the temperature range for mild hyperthermia applications. The findings presented demonstrate a facile approach to expanding the properties of chemically prepared semiconductor nanostructures due to the formation of novel semiconductor–metallic nanocomposites using a “green” approach. Together with the ease in control of their performance, it can considerably increase the impact of semiconductor nanomaterials in various photonic, plasmonic and biomedical applications.

Luminescent carbon nanoparticles are a relatively new class of luminescent materials that have attracted the increasing interest of chemists, physicists, biologists and engineers. The present review has a particular focus on the synthesis and luminescent properties of carbon nanoparticles dispersed inside nanostructured silica of different natures: oxidized porous silicon, amorphous thin films, nanopowders, and nanoporous sol–gel-derived ceramics. The correlations of processing conditions with emission/excitation spectral properties, relaxation kinetics, and photoluminescence photodegradation behaviors are analyzed. Following the evolution of the photoluminescence (PL) through the “from-bottom-to-up” synthesis procedure, the transformation of molecular-like ultraviolet emission of organic precursor into visible emission of carbon nanoparticles is demonstrated. At the end of the review, a novel method for the synthesis of luminescent and transparent composites, in form of nanoporous silica filled with luminescent carbon nanodots, is presented. A prototype of white light emitting devices, constructed on the basis of such luminophores and violet light emitting diodes, is demonstrated.

Carbon dots (CDs) are sub-10 nm carbon particles with notable photoluminescence and photoelectrochemical properties, finding diverse applications in optoelectronics, chemistry, and medicine. Their unique physicochemical properties give rise to antimicrobial actions, being realized through complex mechanisms. Discovering the latter was the aim of this review. The primary interaction of CDs with negatively charged bacterial cells is ensured by electrostatic interaction with that because of CDs' surface positive charge. Hydrophobic forces further contribute to this interaction. Modification of CDs with different alkyl chains enhances their antibacterial effect by balancing positive charge and hydrophobicity, facilitating membrane penetration and causing damage to bacterial cells. Another powerful antibacterial mechanism is the ability of photoexcited CDs to generate reactive oxygen species under visible light, effectively destroying critical biomolecules and inducing cell death. Additionally, the photothermal conversion properties of CDs, allowing them to raise local temperatures upon near-infrared light excitation, result in DNA damage and protein denaturation within bacteria, forming the basis for photothermal therapy. Following infiltration of bacterial walls and membranes, CDs can bind to DNA and RNA in bacteria and fungi through noncovalent interactions, inducing structural changes in DNA and affecting RNA.
