O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a possibilidade de agrupar talhões de cana-de-açúcar colhida mecanicamente e sem queima prévia da palha na região de Ribeirão Preto-SP, de acordo com o potencial de infestação de plantas daninhas, por meio de análise de agrupamento por método hierárquico e outras técnicas de análise multivariada, utilizando como variável o índice de infestação relativa atribuído por avaliações visuais, em duas etapas. A primeira contemplou 20 talhões de cana-planta com ciclo de 18 meses; essas áreas foram utilizadas para comparação de dois métodos de estimativa da composição específica da flora daninha: análise fitossociológica e por meio da porcentagem visual de cobertura geral (CG) e específica (CE). A segunda etapa consistiu no levantamento da composição específica da comunidade de plantas daninhas em 189 talhões, em áreas de cana-soca colhidas durante a safra de 2008, incluindo nesses talhões apenas CG e CE. Com as informações sobre os levantamentos da comunidade infestante foi construído um banco de dados, posteriormente submetido a análises exploratórias por técnicas de estatística multivariada. Para as principais espécies dentro dos talhões, que foram DIGNU, ARACH, IPOHF, MRRCI e IPOQU, seguidas de CYPRO, ELEIN e EPHHS, foram verificados 75% de coincidências de resultados entre os dois métodos de avaliação. Também notou-se que as avaliações visuais de porcentagem de cobertura das espécies podem substituir, para fins de praticidade, agilidade e aplicabilidade, as avaliações fitossociológicas, uma vez que proporcionaram boa capacidade de detecção das principais plantas daninhas dentro de cada talhão. As técnicas de estatística multivariada demonstraram que os talhões podem ser agrupados de acordo com semelhanças na intensidade da infestação e na composição específica.The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of grouping stands of sugarcane harvested mechanically, and without previous straw burning in the region of Ribeirão Preto-SP, according to the potential of weed infestation. Clustering analysis and other multivariate analysis techniques were applied, using as variable the relative rate of infestation assigned by visual assessments, in two phases: in the first, twenty sugarcane plots with an 18-month cycle were selected. These areas were used to compare two methods to estimate the specific composition of the weeds, namely, a phytosociological analysis, described by Mueller-Dombois & Ellenberg (1974) and an analysis of the visual percentage of general coverage (GC) and specific coverage (SC). In the second phase, the specific composition of the weed community was evaluated in 189 plots in areas of ratoon sugarcane harvested in 2008, attributing to these plots only GC and SC. Based on the information obtained on the weed community, a database was built, and subjected to exploratory analysis of multivariate statistical techniques. For the main species within the stands (DIGNU, ARACH, IPOHF, MRRCI and IPOQU, followed by CYPRO, ELEIN and EPHHS), 75% of coinciding results were verified between the two methods. It was found that the visual assessments of species coverage percentage may substitute, for purposes of convenience, flexibility and applicability, the phytosociological evaluations, as these assessments provided good detection capability of the main weeds in each stand. The techniques of multivariate statistics showed that the plots can be grouped according to similarities in infestation intensity and species composition.

As análises de agrupamento e de componentes principais e as redes neurais artificiais foram utilizadas na determinação de padrões de comportamento das populações de macrófitas aquáticas que colonizaram o reservatório de Santana, Piraí-RJ, durante o ano de 2004. As análises de agrupamento dividiram o comportamento das populações durante o ano em dois grupos distintos, apresentando um padrão no primeiro semestre que difere daquele observado no segundo semestre do ano. A análise de componentes principais demonstrou que esse comportamento da comunidade (grupo de populações) é influenciado principalmente pelas espécies S. montevidensis, Heteranthera reniformis, Ludwigia sp., Rhynchospora aurea, C. iria, C. ferax e Aeschynomene denticulata no primeiro grupo e por Echinochloa polystachya, Polygonum lapathifolium, Alternanthera phyloxeroides, Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia azurea, Brachiaria arrecta e Oxyscarium cubense no segundo grupo. As redes neurais artificiais agruparam as populações de macrófitas aquáticas em nove grupos, conforme sua densidade nos diferentes meses do ano. A aplicação da análise de componentes principais (ACP) nos valores de frequência das populações presentes nos primeiros três grupos de Kohonen permitiu discriminar três grupos de meses, cujas populações apresentaram características diferentes de colonização. A aplicação das redes neurais artificiais permitiu melhor discriminação dos meses e das espécies que compõem as comunidades correspondentes, quando utilizada a análise de componentes principais.Cluster analysis, principal components analysis and Kohonen artificial neural networks were tested to determine the behavior patterns of aquatic macrophyte colonization on Santana reservoir, Piraí-RJ, 2004. The colonization behavior of the populations was divided into two groups, representing the two year semesters. The principal components analysis showed that the behavior of the first group (first semester) was mainly influenced by S. montevidensis, Heteranthera reniformis, Ludwigia sp., Rhynchospora aurea, C. iria, C.ferax e Aeschynomene denticulate and the second group by Echinochloa polystachya, Polygonum lapathifolium, Alternanthera phyloxeroides, Pistia stratiotes, Eichhornia azurea, Brachiaria arrecta e Oxyscarium cubense. The artificial neural networks (ANN) grouped the aquatic macrophyte populations into nine groups according to their colonization behavior during the year. The application of principal components analysis (PCA) on frequency values of the population determined by the artificial neural networks for the first three groups allowed to discriminate three groups of populations with different colonization behaviors. The application of artificial neural networks allowed a better discrimination of communities (months) and species colonization behavior than the application of PCA on raw data.

Os dados são provenientes de 234 touros da raça Nelore participantes de um teste de progênie, no período de 1996 a 2003. A diferença esperada na progênie (DEP) de sete características: peso aos 120 e 210 dias, efeito materno (DMPP120 e DMPP210), peso e perímetro escrotal aos 365 e 450 dias, efeito direto (DDP365, DDP450, DDPE365 e DDPE450) e idade ao primeiro parto (DDIPP) foi utilizada para classificar os animais em três grupos, assim como identificar quais as características possuíram maior poder discriminatório na formação de cada grupo. Para tanto, foram utilizados procedimentos estatísticos multivariados de análise de agrupamentos k-médias e componentes principais. Os resultados evidenciaram que, dos três grupos formados, dois se destacaram quanto aos valores médios das DEPs. A importância desses dois grupos de touros foi confirmada pela análise de componentes principais, que associou a eles valores superiores de DEPs diretas de peso e perímetro escrotal. A quantidade da variabilidade original retida pelos dois primeiros componentes principais foi de 70,22%. Estes procedimentos mostraram-se eficientes e constituíram importantes ferramentas para classificar touros, discriminar variáveis, bem como resumir informações multivariadas, podendo ser usados como auxílio valioso na seleção de reprodutores para uso nos programas de melhoramento genético.The data set is from 234 Nelore bulls which participate of a progeny test in the period from 1996 to 2003. The expected progeny diference (EPDs) of seven economic traits, weights at 120 e 210 days of age, maternal effect (DMPP120 and DMPP210), weights and scrotal circumferences at 365 e 450 days of age, direct effects (DDP365, DDP450, DDPE365 and DDPE450), and age at first calving (DDIPP), were used in order to classify these animals in three groups and verify which EPDs showed greatest discriminating power in forming the groups. The statistical applied techniques were: k-means clusters analysis and principal components analysis. From the three groups formed, two of them stood out in relation to values of the EPDs means. Evidence of the importance of these two groups was observed in the principal component analysis that associate to them higher values of direct EPDs of weight and scrotal circumference. The two first principal components accounted for 70.22% of the total original variability. Both techniques could be an important tools to sire classification, variable discrimination, as well as to resume multivariate information, and they could be applied to help selection in animal breeding program.

Objetivou-se neste trabalho a obtenção de padrões de infestação de plantas daninhas na cultura de cana-de-açúcar com histórico de colheita mecanizada sem queima prévia da palha. Foram realizadas amostragens em 28 talhões na região de Ribeirão Preto, SP; em cada talhão foram demarcadas unidades de avaliação e coleta, na proporção de duas por hectare, que consistiram de áreas (quatro linhas de 4 metros de comprimento) mantidas sem controle de plantas daninhas e onde foram realizadas as amostragens de plantas emergidas. As amostragens foram realizadas aos 120 dias após o corte, com quadrados vazados (0,5 x 0,5 m) lançados aleatoriamente duas vezes em cada uma das unidades de avaliação e coleta. Com os dados obtidos, calculou-se a importância relativa e o índice de agregação das espécies ou grupo de espécies. Esses índices foram usados no processamento da análise de agrupamento hierárquica, utilizando como medida de semelhança a distância euclidiana e como estratégia de agrupamento o método UPGMA (Unweighted Pair-Group Method using arithmetic Averages). Foi possível distinguir quatro grupos em função da importância relativa e cinco grupos de talhões em função do índice de agregação; dentro de alguns grupos houve formação de subgrupos.The aim of this work was to obtain the weed infestation patterns in sugarcane plantation with a history of mechanical harvest without previous straw burning. Twenty-eight plots were chosen in the Ribeirão Preto region, in the state of São Paulo, with evaluation and collection units being demarcated in each plot, in a proportion of two per hectare, which consisted of areas (4 rows of 4 meters in length) maintained free of any weed control method. Samplings were carried out at 120 days after cut with quadrants (0.5 m x 0.5 m) cast twice at random at each evaluation and collection unit. The following phytosociological indices were calculated from the obtained data: relative importance and aggregation index of species or group of species. Grouping analysis was carried out utilizing as the similarity coefficient the Euclidian distance and the Unweighted Pair-Group Method using arithmetic averages. It was possible to distinguish four groups as a function of relative importance and five plot groups as a function of the aggregation index, with formation of subgroups within some groups.

A alface-d'água (Pistia stratiotes) é uma das principais entre as macrófitas aquáticas que causam problemas em corpos hídricos no Brasil e são consideradas como plantas daninhas. O presente trabalho foi realizado com os objetivos de conhecer melhor a variabilidade genética dessa macrófita e relacionar essa variabilidade com a resposta à aplicação do herbicida glyphosate. Para isso, foram coletados indivíduos em 12 corpos hídricos em diferentes cidades do território nacional (Americana, Cambaratiba, Curitiba, Itapura, Jaboticabal, Lagoa Santa, Piraí, Rio Grande, Rubinéia, Salto Grande, Santa Gertrudes e Três Lagoas). Os acessos foram caracterizados pelo uso de marcadores RAPD (DNA Polimórfico Amplificado ao Acaso), que permitiram, com o auxílio de iniciadores aleatórios, a caracterização dos locos polimórficos identificados por uma matriz de ausência e presença de bandas. Utilizando essa matriz, a análise de agrupamento permitiu nítida classificação dos acessos em três grupos com diferenças genéticas entre eles. Um ensaio de controle químico, com plantas mantidas em vasos plásticos (5 L) e pulverizadas com o herbicida glyphosate nas concentrações de 0,0, 0,6, 1,2, 1,8 e 2,4 kg ha-1, identificou, utilizando avaliações aos 7, 14 e 21 dias após aplicação, que as duas maiores doses promoveram melhor efeito herbicida. Foi verificado também que os acessos de Curitiba e Cambaratiba apresentaram menor suscetibilidade ao herbicida glyphosate. Não houve correspondência entre a estrutura de grupos dos acessos pela análise multivariada de agrupamento com a técnica RAPD e a suscetibilidade da alface-d'água ao glyphosate.Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) is one the most important macrophytes, classified as weed and causing serious problems in watercourses in Brazil. The aim of this research was to evaluate the genetic variability of water lettuce and its relationship with this plant's susceptibility to glyphosate. Plant samples were collected in 12 water bodies in different regions in Brazil (Americana-AMC, Cambaratiba-CBT, Curitiba-CRB, Itapura-ITP, Jaboticabal-JBT, Lagoa Santa-LST, Piraí-PRI, Rio Grande-RGD, Rubinéia-RBN, Salto Grande-SGD, Santa Gertrudes-SGT and Três Lagoas-TLG). The accesses were characterized by the use of RAPD markers (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA), whose unspecific starters allowed the analysis of polymorphic loci, which evidenced the distribution of the accesses into two groups, with high genetic similarity inside the sub-groups, but with high genetic divergence between them. The use of the RAPD technique evidenced the existence of genetic differences between the accesses. Plants growing in plastic pots (5 L) were sprayed with glyphosate at the concentrations of 0.0, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4 kg ha-1. Herbicide effects were evaluated on the 7th, 14th, and 21st days after application (DAA) with control note attributions (0% without control and 100% leading to the complete death of the plants). No correspondence was observed between the structure of the access groups by the grouping multi-varied analysis using the RAPD technique and water lettuce susceptibility to glyphosate.

Foram utilizados 38 tourinhos com idade inicial entre 426 e 462 dias e final entre 751 e 781 dias das raças Nelore, Guzerá, Gir e Caracu, subdivididos em sete grupos genéticos conforme o método de seleção, com o objetivo de comparar o desenvolvimento reprodutivo, avaliado pelas características físicas e morfológicas do sêmen (volume, aspecto, turbilhonamento, motilidade progressiva e vigor, morfologia e concentração espermáticas), em 11 colheitas com intervalos de 29 dias. Os touros dos grupos Nelore seleção (NeS, n=6), Nelore tradicional (NeT, n=9) e Caracu seleção (CaS, n=6), com 415, 430 e 419kg de peso, respectivamente, apresentaram diferenças em todas as características quando comparados com o Nelore controle (NeC, n=4), com 302kg de peso, na segunda colheita, e este foi o único a diferir dos outros seis grupamentos na décima primeira colheita (P

The present investigation aimed to compare the performance of two machine learning algorithms, Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Classification and Regression Tree (CART), alongside the Automatic Linear Modelling (ALM), and the traditional Multivariate Linear Regression model (MLR) to predict the egg weight (EWT) of Mallard duck from some egg traits including egg length (EL), egg width (EWd), egg shape index (ESI), eggshell weight (ESW), albumen weight (AW), albumen height (AH), yolk weight (YW), yolk height (YH), yolk diameter (YD), and Haugh unit (HU). The Pearson correlation between observed and predicted values (r), coefficient of determination (R2), adjusted coefficient of determination (R2adj), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Relative Approximation Error (RAE) were used to estimate model performance. EWT had a strong correlation with egg dimensions (EL and EWd, r=0.752 and 0.790, respectively), AW (r= 0.815), and YW (r= 0.784). The R2adj values were 0.981, 0.970, 0.964 and 0.897, for ANN, ALM, MLR, and CART models, respectively. The lowest RMSE was found for ANN (0.753), while the highest RMSE was observed for CART (1.778). Overall, the ensemble models proposed in this study yielded similar results, with the ANN algorithm showing a marginally superior predictive performance compared to ALM, CART, and MLR models. Mango fruit can not be stored for longer time at ambient temperature due to its highly perishable nature. Conversely, low temperature storage may also lead to chilling injury. Therefore, the storage performance of mango cv. 'Langra' fruit at different temperatures was investigated to optimize the temperature for its storage. Mango fruits were stored at 5, 10 and 15 ± 1 °C for 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days and evaluated for weight loss (%), fruit juice pH, ascorbic acid, chilling injury score and ion leakage (%) after completion of the respective storage period. Weight loss and pH increased with the increase in temperature and storage duration. The ascorbic acid exhibited an inverse relation with storage temperature and duration. Chilling injury score increased with the extension in storage duration but was lower at higher temperatures. Ion leakage (%) was the highest in fruits exposed to 15 ± 1 °C followed by 5 ± 1 °C whereas, it was the least at 10 ± 1 °C and increased when storage duration was prolonged. It was concluded that chilling injury occurs after 10 days in mango cv. 'Langra' fruit at 5 ± 1 °C and if no technology is available for alleviation of chilling injury, it may be stored at 10 ± 1 °C instead of 5 ± 1 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evaluation study is essential to ascertain performance and adaptation of improved genotypes across new environment. Field experiments were conducted at the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Research Farm, Minjibir, Kano State, Nigeria over two years to assess the performance of twelve improved pigeonpea genotypes comprising of early (ICPL 84031, ICPL 85010 and ICPL 87), medium (ICP 7120, ICP 8863, ICPL 161, ICPL 85063, ICPL 87051 and ICPL 87119) and late (ICP 7035, ICP 8094 and ICPL 9145) flowering groups introduced from International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Patencheru, India. Effects due to genotype, year and genotype x year interactions were significant (P=<0.01) for most characters evaluated. Grain yield ranged from 723 kg ha-1 to 2,710 kg ha-1 with ICP 7120 having the highest grain yield followed by ICPL 87119 and then ICPL 84031genotype. The two highest grain yielding genotypes (ICP 7120 and ICPL 87119) were medium flowering type, followed by ICPL 84031, an early flowering genotype whose grain yield did not differ significantly from that of the two medium flowering genotypes. The high yielding and early flowering genotype (ICPL 84031) is a candidate genotype recommended for promotion in short rainfall environments of northern Nigeria. Significantly higher grain yields were obtained during second year with mean yield of 3,118 kg ha-1 compared with 838 kg ha-1 recorded in first year, an indication that delayed planting in first year affected yield and that genotypes responded differently to year and soil effects. Correlation analysis (pooled over two seasons) revealed that number of primary branches plant-1 and pod weight were the most important traits influencing grain yield in pigeonpea.
