Recently, the question of whether surjective maps preserving the norm of a symmetric Kubo-Ando mean can be extended to Jordan $\ast$-isomorphisms has been tackled. The question was affirmatively answered for surjective maps between $C^{*}$-algebras for certain specific classes of symmetric Kubo-Ando means. Here, we give a comprehensive answer to this question for surjective maps between $AW^{*}$-algebras preserving the norm of any symmetric Kubo-Ando mean.

We provide a complete characterization of a subclass of means of positive operators in the class of symmetric Kubo-Ando means that was first introduced and studied in L. Moln\'ar, ``Characterizations of certain means of positive operators," Linear Algebra Appl. 567 (2019) 143-166. In Theorem 6 of that paper, he gives a characterization of this subclass (which we call the Moln\'ar class of means) in terms of the operator monotone functions representing the means, which includes the geometric mean. Furthermore, he leaves open the problem to determine if the geometric mean is the only such mean in that subclass. Here we give an alternative characterization of the Moln\'ar class of means in terms of the boundary-values of bounded harmonic functions on certain rectangles which completely characterizes this class of means. Moreover, we use this to construct an explicit example of a mean in the subclass that is not the geometric means thereby solving the open problem of L. Moln\'ar., Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure

In \cite{molnar} L.~Molnar studied the question of whether the L\"owner partial order on the positive cone of an operator algebra is determined by the norm of any arbitrary Kubo-Ando mean. He affirmatively answered the question for certain classes of Kubo-Ando means and left as an open problem the general case. We here give an answer to this question, by showing that the norm of every symmetric Kubo-Ando mean $\sigma$ on $\mathcal B(H)$ is order-determining, i.e. if $A, B\in \mathcal B(H)^{{\sss{++}}}$ satisfy $\Vert A\sigma X\Vert \le \Vert B\sigma X\Vert$ for every $X\in \mathcal B(H)^{\sss{++}}$, then $A\le B$.

The Golden-Thompson trace inequality which states that $Tr\, e^{H+K} \leq Tr\, e^H e^K$ has proved to be very useful in quantum statistical mechanics. Golden used it to show that the classical free energy is less than the quantum one. Here we make this G-T inequality more explicit by proving that for some operators, notably the operators of interest in quantum mechanics, $H=\Delta$ or $H= -\sqrt{-\Delta +m}$ and $K=$ potential, $Tr\, e^{H+(1-u)K}e^{uK}$ is a monotone increasing function of the parameter $u$ for $0\leq u \leq 1$. Our proof utilizes an inequality of Ando, Hiai and Okubo (AHO): $Tr\, X^sY^tX^{1-s}Y^{1-t} \leq Tr\, XY$ for positive operators X,Y and for $\tfrac{1}{2} \leq s,\,t \leq 1 $ and $s+t \leq \tfrac{3}{2}$. The obvious conjecture that this inequality should hold up to $s+t\leq 1$, was proved false by Plevnik. We give a different proof of AHO and also give more counterexamples in the $\tfrac{3}{2}, 1$ range. More importantly we show that the inequality conjectured in AHO does indeed hold in this range if $X,Y$ have a certain positivity property -- one which does hold for quantum mechanical operators, thus enabling us to prove our G-T monotonicity theorem.

The original Ando-Hiai and Golden-Thompson inequalities present comparisons for the operator geometric mean $\sharp_v$ when $0\leq v\leq 1.$ Our main target in this article is to study these celebrated inequalities for means other than the geometric mean and for the geometric mean when $v\not\in [0,1].$

It is well known that special Kubo-Ando operator means admit divergence center interpretations, moreover, they are also mean squared error estimators for certain metrics on positive definite operators. In this paper we give a divergence center interpretation for every symmetric Kubo-Ando mean. This characterization of the symmetric means naturally leads to a definition of weighted and multivariate versions of a large class of symmetric Kubo-Ando means. We study elementary properties of these weighted multivariate means, and note in particular that in the special case of the geometric mean we recover the weighted $\mathcal{A} \# \mathcal{H}$-mean introduced by Kim, Lawson, and Lim., Comment: v2: accepted manuscript version

The main goal of this exposition is to present further analysis of the Kantorovich and Ando operator inequalities. For an $n$-tuple of positive invertible operators on a Hilbert space, we present some variants of Ando--Hiai type inequalities for deformed means from an $n$-variable operator mean by an operator mean, which is related to the information monotonicity of a certain unital positive linear map. As an application, we investigate the monotonicity of the power mean from the deformed mean in terms of the generalized Kantorovich constants under the operator order. Moreover, we improve the norm inequality for the operator power means related to the Log-Euclidean mean in terms of the Specht ratio.

We show that the map $\pi_\ast \mathrm{MString}\to \pi_\ast \mathrm{tmf}$ induced by the Ando-Hopkins-Rezk orientation is surjective. This proves an unpublished claim of Hopkins and Mahowald. We do so by constructing an $\mathbf{E}_1$-ring $B$ and a map $B \to \mathrm{MString}$ such that the composite $B \to \mathrm{MString} \to \mathrm{tmf}$ is surjective on homotopy. The Ando-Choi-Effros lifting theorem provides conditions under which a bounded linear mapping taking values in a quotient space can be lifted through the quotient map.
