This research aims to identify the prevalence of failure for Birmingham Hip Prosthesis (BHR) in total hip arthroplasty and to analyze its reasons from biomaterials and biofunctional perspectives. We present our current analysis and tests on a series of different BHR-retrieved prostheses after premature failure. Relevant clinical data, such as X-ray investigations and intraoperative images for clinical case studies, were analyzed to better understand all factors involved in BHR prosthesis failure. A detailed analysis of the failures highlighted uneven cement distribution, overloading in certain areas, and void formation in the material. A closer investigation using microscopical techniques revealed the presence of a crack originating from the gap between the cement mantle and human bone. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy analyses were conducted as part of the investigation to examine bone cement morphology in detail and better understand the interactions at the interfaces between implant, cement, and bone. In conclusion, this research emphasizes the importance of surgical technique planning and the cementation procedure in the success rate of BHR prostheses. It also underscores the need to carefully evaluate patient characteristics and bone quality to minimize the risk of BHR prosthesis failure. Until the late 20th century, the idea of identifying wildfires in deep time was not generally accepted. One of the basic problems was the fact that charcoal-like wood fragments, so often found in sedimentary rocks and in coals, were termed fusain and, in addition, many researchers could not envision wildfires in peat-forming systems. The advent of Scanning Electron Microscopy and studies on modern charcoals and fossil fusains demonstrated beyond doubt that wildfire residues may be recognized in rocks dating back to at least 350 million years. Increasing numbers of studies on modern and fossil charcoal assemblages from the 1970s through the 1990s established the potential importance of wildfires in the fossil record, using Carboniferous examples in particular. Since the 1990s, extensive progress has been made in understanding modern wildfires and their byproducts. New techniques to study ancient charcoals have allowed considerable progress to be made to integrate modern and ancient fire studies, both before and after the evolution of mankind. Four important developments have made a reassessment of Carboniferous wildfires necessary: the recognition of the role of atmospheric oxygen in controlling the occurrence of wildfire; the development of new microscopical techniques allowing more detailed anatomical data to be obtained from charcoal; the integration of molecular studies with the evolution of fire traits; and new developments in or understanding of post-fire erosion/deposition systems. Summary: The endomembrane system consists of various membrane‐bound organelles including the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), Golgi apparatus, trans‐Golgi network (TGN), endosomes, and the lysosome/vacuole. Membrane trafficking between distinct compartments is mainly achieved by vesicular transport. As the endomembrane compartments and the machineries regulating the membrane trafficking are largely conserved across all eukaryotes, our current knowledge on organelle biogenesis and endomembrane trafficking in plants has mainly been shaped by corresponding studies in mammals and yeast. However, unique perspectives have emerged from plant cell biology research through the characterization of plant‐specific regulators as well as the development and application of the state‐of‐the‐art microscopical techniques. In this review, we summarize our current knowledge on the plant endomembrane system, with a focus on several distinct pathways: ER‐to‐Golgi transport, protein sorting at the TGN, endosomal sorting on multivesicular bodies, vacuolar trafficking/vacuole biogenesis, and the autophagy pathway. Various chalcidoid wasps can actively steer their terebra (= ovipositor shaft) in diverse directions, despite the lack of terebral intrinsic musculature. To investigate the mechanisms of these bending and rotational movements, we combined microscopical and microtomographical techniques, together with videography, to analyse the musculoskeletal ovipositor system of the ectoparasitoid pteromalid wasp Lariophagus distinguendus (Förster, 1841) and the employment of its terebra during oviposition. The ovipositor consists of three pairs of valvulae, two pairs of valvifers and the female T9 (9th abdominal tergum). The paired 1st and the 2nd valvulae are interlocked via the olistheter system, which allows the three parts to slide longitudinally relative to each other, and form the terebra. The various ovipositor movements are actuated by a set of nine paired muscles, three of which (i.e. 1st valvifer-genital membrane muscle, ventral 2nd valvifer-venom gland reservoir muscle, T9-genital membrane muscle) are described here for the first time in chalcidoids. The anterior and posterior 2nd valvifer-2nd valvula muscles are adapted in function. (1) In the active probing position, they enable the wasps to pull the base of each of the longitudinally split and asymmetrically overlapping halves of the 2nd valvula that are fused at the apex dorsally, thus enabling lateral bending of the terebra. Concurrently, the 1st valvulae can be pro- and retracted regardless of this bending. (2) These muscles can also rotate the 2nd valvula and therefore the whole terebra at the basal articulation, allowing bending in various directions. The position of the terebra is anchored at the puncture site in hard substrates (in which drilling is extremely energy- and time-consuming). A freely steerable terebra increases the chance of contacting a potential host within a concealed cavity. The evolution of the ability actively to steer the terebra can be considered a key innovation that has putatively contributed to the acquisition of new hosts to a parasitoid's host range. Such shifts in host exploitation, each followed by rapid radiations, have probably aided the evolutionary success of Chalcidoidea (with more than 500,000 species estimated). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is one of its kind since it is related to the quantitative shape examination of particles of feed, concentrate, middling and tailing products in coarse and fine shaking table streams of a Turkish chromite concentration plant. In this study, the novel technique; Dynamic image analysis (DIA) as well as visual inspection by SEM and stereomicroscope were used for the representative samples of the plant. Analysis revealed that particle shapes of concentrate products are mostly equant or round while the most elongated particles were observed in tailing products at a 95% confidence level. This is highly linked to the rolling and sliding movement of round and elongated particles, respectively on the deck. This implies that particle shape is one of the parameters affecting gravity separation. Using shape data with tonnages of the circuits in mass balance equations indicates that shape distributions of products in table circuits are consistent. This study gives insight as better separation recovery could be obtained when a proper mill is used for producing feed particles, which have targeted shape to shaking tables since any improvements in recovery will have a big effect on the concentrate income. The magnetic nano catalyst mediated synthesis of heterocycles is one of the most fascinating fields of chemistry due to its proven applicability in high-efficiency, eco-friendly and recyclable heterogeneous catalytic system. In order to design a novel Ni 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 /f-MWCNTs–CS–Asp/Ni2+ magnetic heterogeneous catalyst, Ni 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 2 O 4 -decorated multi walled CNTs were modified with crosslinked chitosan with l -aspartic acid entrapped Ni2+ nanoparticles. This nano catalyst showed significant catalytic activity in the synthesis of biologically potent novel seven membered heterocycles embracing fused 1H-benzo [4,5]imidazo [1,21,2-b][1,2,4]triazepine skeleton. Owing to its interesting structure and being an important pharmacophore fragment, it was endeavored to exploit its synthesis. For the first time considering an exquisite and accomplishable access to construct (Kaur et al., 2021; Jiang et al., 2006; Stern, 1980) [1,2,4]triazepine framework. In addition, the structures of synthesized heterocycles and morphology of nano catalyst were corroborated on the basis of various spectroscopical and microscopical techniques. Furthermore, employing ultrasonication as energy source in the synthesis of magnetic nano catalyst employing 3R's (reduce, recycle and reuse), mild reaction conditions with appreciable yield along with no consumption and production of hazardous chemicals put it under the umbrella of green and sustainable approach. Surface sizing (or coating) can significantly improve surface properties and enhance the writing performance of paper products. Pickering emulsion, where the solid particles are used, is applied as a sizing agent due to its insensitivity to external environment and narrow size distributions. This research investigated the writing and printing effect on Xuan paper (a kind of porous handmade paper originating in ancient China used for writing and painting) coated with Pickering emulsion. The morphology and narrow size distribution of alkenyl succinic anhydride-in-water emulsions were characterized by microscopical techniques. Subsequently, these emulsions were applied for surface sizing on Xuan paper, and the surface properties of the sized paper were analyzed by pH values. The obtained data indicates that a series of alkaline-sized paper are successfully produced. The results of static contact angles, whiteness, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy reveal that Pickering emulsion provides a smooth surface for writing on Xuan paper, without significantly changing the whiteness of the paper or affecting the writing quality. In addition, the ink droplets on coated Xuan paper and their diffusion dynamics were recorded and quantitatively described by the radial mean distribution function, which allowed for the simultaneous determination of the diffusion radius, color intensity, diffusion roundness, and spread rate. This work introduces a fresh perspective on the correlation between the paper's macroscopic properties and writing parameters, and it further enriches the comprehension of Pickering emulsion systems. In addition, this study presents an overview of the theoretical and practical implications of developing a quantitative model for describing writing patterns and providing a novel approach for surface technology, image description, and hydrodynamic diffusion in porous media. The moss genus Ctenidium (Schimp.) Mitt. comprises approximately 23 species worldwide, of which two are known to exist in Hawai'i. Based on recent molecular studies, the genus has been reclassified into the family Myuriaceae, departing from its traditional classification in the Hypnaceae. Plants newly collected from Maui exhibit most characteristics of Ctenidium but differ from all known species within the genus by a combination of several critical characters detailed in this study. Consequently, we propose the classification of this moss as a new species of Ctenidium. The material was studied in Hoyer's solution, using standard microscopical and photomicrographical techniques. Ctenidium multiseriatum S.He & M.K.Thomas is described as a new species from Hawai'i and distinguished from all known Ctenidium species by a combination of distinctive characters including multiseriate paraphyses, clearly prorate laminal cells at both the upper and the lower ends, shorter median and upper laminal cells, ecostae perichaetial leaves with subentire margins, irregularly subpinnately branched stems, and foliose pseudoparaphyllia. Electrochemical Strain Microscopy (ESM) can provide useful information on ionic diffusion in solids at the local scale. In this work, a finite element model of ESM measurements was developed and applied to commercial lithium manganese (III,IV) oxide (LiMn2O4) particles. ESM time spectroscopy was used, where a direct current (DC) voltage pulse locally disturbs the spatial distribution of mobile ions. After the pulse is off, the ions return to equilibrium at a rate which depends on the Li diffusivity in the material. At each stage, Li diffusivity is monitored by measuring the ESM response to a small alternative current (AC) voltage simultaneously applied to the tip. The model separates two different mechanisms, one linked to the response to DC bias and another one related to the AC excitation. It is argued that the second one is not diffusiondriven but is rather a contribution of the sum of several mechanisms with at least one depending on the lithium ion concentration explaining the relaxation process. With proper fitting of this decay, diffusion coefficients of lithium hosts could be extracted. Additionally, the effect of phase transition in LiMn2O4 is taken into account, explaining some experimental observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Single-molecule microscopy has become an indispensable tool for biochemical analysis. The capability of characterizing distinct properties of individual molecules without averaging has provided us with a different perspective for the existing scientific issues and phenomena. Recently, super-resolution fluorescence microscopy techniques have overcome the optical diffraction limit by the localization of molecule positions. However, the labeling process can potentially modify the intermolecular dynamics. Based on the highly sensitive nanomechanical photothermal microscopy reported previously, we propose optimizations on this label-free microscopy technique toward localization microscopy. A localization precision of 3 Å is achieved with gold nanoparticles, and the detection of polarization-dependent absorption is demonstrated, which opens the door for further improvement with polarization modulation imaging. The paper aimed to present the microscopic techniques used in botanical origin determination of honey samples, shortly melissopalynology. This technique is used for microscopic examination of pollen grains to determine the botanical origin of honey. It is known that a certain number of pollen grains must be recovered from sediment of honey solution, and the presence of small amounts of pollen may be related to falsification. Identification of pollen structure is generally made using light microscopy; phase contrast microscopy may be also used. Fluorescence microscopy is also a powerful method in palynology. Confocal laser scanning microscopy is effective in revealing the ultrastructure of pollen outer layer and shape of the pollen. The determination of the botanical origin of honey using palynology is based on the relative frequency of the pollen belonging to nectariferous plants. Honey is considered monofloral if the pollen from the sediment comes predominantly from a named botanical origin and overpasses 45% from the total count of pollen grains counted on the microscopic slide. Extraforaminal disc herniations are extraordinary herniations because they are located outside the foraminal bony borders and compress the root exiting at the corresponding level, whereas in median or paramedian herniations, the root 1 level below is compressed. Percutaneous endoscopic discectomy (PED) and microscopic extraforaminal discectomy (MEFD) are 2 popular contemporary techniques that have been performed extensively for these herniations since the 1970s. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed 118 patients who underwent either PED (66 patients) or MEFD (52 patients). All the patients were clinically evaluated for neurologic examination findings, visual analog scale (VAS) scores for leg pain and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) preoperatively and on the seventh postoperative day as well as 6 and 12 months after surgery. The complication rates and types of both techniques were discussed. The preoperative VAS score and ODI were all comparable. Improvements in VAS scores 6 months postoperatively and improvements in ODI at all follow-up periods were statistically significant in favor of PED. However, there was great discrepancy regarding the postsurgical complications in favor of MEFD. PED is more prone to complications because this technique is strictly dependent on the tubular system and the ideal anatomy of the Kambin triangle. Variations in or degeneration of the Kambin triangle can lead to devastating complications in the PED technique, but normal anatomic conditions are feasible in only approximately 20% of patients. Introduction: Recently, an additional trigeminothalamic tract – the dorsal trigeminothalamic tract – has been described in human brainstems by our group next to the known ventral trigeminothalamic tract. As various elements of the trigeminal system are known to be organised in a somatotopic fashion, the question arose whether the fibres within the trigeminal root show specific distributions patterns in their contribution to the ventral trigeminothalamic tract and dorsal trigeminothalamic tract specifically. Methods: This study investigated the arrangement of the fibres in the trigeminal root by combining various imaging methods in the pons of 11 post-mortem specimens. The pons were investigated by polarised light imaging (PLI) (n = 4; to quantify fibre orientation; 100 µm interslice distance), histochemical staining methods (n = 3; to visualise the internal myeloarchitecture; 60 µm) and ultra-high field, post-mortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (n = 4; for tractography; 500 µm interslice distance). Results: This study shows that the fibres, from the point where the trigeminal root enters the brainstem, are distinctly arranged by their contribution to the ventral trigeminothalamic tract and dorsal trigeminothalamic tract. This finding is supported by both post-mortem, ultra-high dMRI and different light microscopy techniques. Conclusion: The data from this study suggest that the fibres in the superior half of the root contribute mainly to the ventral trigeminothalamic tract, whereas the fibres in the inferior half mainly contribute to the dorsal trigeminothalamic tract. Such a somatotopic organisation could possibly create new insights into the anatomical origin of trigeminal neuralgia and the clinical relevance of this somatotopic organisation should therefore be further explored. Solvent effects are often difficult to understand in cases where reaction intermediates, and thus their differential behavior in different solvents, are not directly observable by traditional ensemble analytical techniques. Herein, the sensitivity of single‐particle fluorescence microscopy uniquely enables direct observation of organozinc intermediates and solvent effects on their build‐up and persistence. When combined with NMR spectroscopy, these imaging data pinpoint the previously elusive mechanistic origin of solvent effects in the synthesis of widely used organozinc reagents. These findings characterize the acceleration of oxidative addition of the starting organoiodide to the surface of zinc metal in DMSO relative to THF, but once formed, surface intermediates display similar persistence in either solvent. The current studies are the first demonstration of a highly sensitive, single‐particle fluorescence microscopy technique to pinpoint otherwise elusive solvent effects in synthetic chemistry. To be able to resolve molecular-clusters it is crucial to access vital information (such as, molecule density, cluster-size, and others) that are key in understanding disease progression and the underlying mechanism. Traditional single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) techniques use molecules of variable sizes (as determined by its localization precision (LP)) to reconstruct a super-resolution map. This results in an image with overlapping and superimposing PSFs (due to a wide size-spectrum of single-molecules) that undermine image resolution. Ideally, it should be possible to identify the brightest molecules (also termed as the fortunate molecules) to reconstruct ultra-superresolution map, provided sufficient statistics is available from the recorded data. Probabilistic Optically-Selective Single-molecule Imaging Based Localization Encoded (POSSIBLE) microscopy explores this possibility by introducing a narrow probability size-distribution of single-molecules (narrow size-spectrum about a predefined mean-size). The reconstruction begins by presetting the mean and variance of the narrow distribution function (Gaussian function). Subsequently, the dataset is processed and single-molecules are filtered by the Gaussian function to remove unfortunate molecules. The fortunate molecules thus retained are then mapped to reconstruct an ultra-superresolution map. In-principle, the POSSIBLE microscopy technique is capable of infinite resolution (resolution of the order of actual single-molecule size) provided enough fortunate molecules are experimentally detected. In short, bright molecules (with large emissivity) holds the key. Here, we demonstrate the POSSIBLE microscopy technique and reconstruct single-molecule images with an average PSF sizes of σ ± Δσ = 15 ± 10 nm, 30 ± 2 nm & 50 ± 2 nm. Results show better-resolved Dendra2-HA clusters with large cluster-density in transfected NIH3T3 fibroblast cells as compared to the traditional SMLM techniques. Cluster analysis indicates densely-packed HA molecules, HA-HA interaction, and a surge in the number of HA molecules per cluster post 24 Hrs of transfection. The study using POSSIBLE microscopy introduces new insights in influenza biology. A series of carbon materials and composites has been characterized by temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO), polarized light microscopy (PLM), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and temperature-programmed desorption coupled with mass-spectrometry analysis. For materials containing anisotropic carbons, a consistent relationship was found between oxidation reactivity and optical texture. Polarized-light microscopy in combination with TPO can help assessing the relationships between oxidation reactivity and optical texture of anisotropic carbons. Deconvolution of TPO profiles and PLM observations can effectively identify the individual components of multi-component carbon materials with important implications in structure-property relationships and their applications. For amorphous carbons with isotropic optical textures, TPO profiles were found to be influenced by the surface chemistry of the materials. It appears that the TPO technique under controlled conditions provides a rapid analysis of solids carbons with respect to their structure and properties. This is particularly useful for the analysis of carbon composites with multiple phases in combination with microscopic examination and elemental analysis using EDS. About half the wood extracted worldwide from forests is used as fuelwood to produce energy, about 17 percent is converted to charcoal (FAO 2017) which represents one of the least controlled/monitored segments of the European timber market. Although charcoal has a significant share on the European market of wood-based products it is not yet covered by the European Timber Regulations (EUTR), (EU) No 995/2010. For this project, a total of 150 charcoal consignments from eleven countries (Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Ukraine, Czech Republic, and Belgium) were examined and evaluated based on the 3D-reflected light microscopy technique. The high-resolution study indicates the proportion of different European timbers compared with that of timbers from subtropical and tropical regions. The share of subtropical and tropical species is surprisingly high with approximately 46% for material received from all countries studied, but far over 60% for Spain, Italy, Poland, and Belgium. The study shows that comparing the results for charcoal received from these countries there is an inversely proportional relation of certified products (FSC and PEFC) and products with timbers from subtropical or tropical origins. In the charcoal consignments from Switzerland, the share of timbers from subtropical or tropical origin is only 13.5%, whereas that of certified products is 60%. In material received from Spain, the proportion of timbers from subtropical or tropical regions is 67%, whereas that of certified products only 8%. A careful check of the declaration on the packaging, of the accompanying certificates, and the information on origin revealed alarming evidence: only 25% of the consignments examined provide information on the bags, e.g., with regard to the processed wood species; and well over half of such declarations were incorrect and/or incomplete. A trade flow analysis of EU member states was carried out to contribute to a better understanding of the relationships between international charcoal trade flows and the end products in European countries. This approach contributes to an essential understanding of charcoal transit in Europe and the results constitute a strong motive for the inclusion of charcoal in the respective annex to the EUTR. Although research and new technologies have introduced different ways of observing microorganisms, including scanning and electron microscopy, these methods are expensive and require equipment that is typically not found in a middle school classroom. The transmission-through-dye technique (TTD; Gregg et al., 2010), a new optical microscopy method that can be used with current basic light microscopes, relies on the fairly simple mechanism of filtered light passing through a dyed medium to produce an image that reflects cell thickness. With this technique, living microorganisms look bright red against a dark background, and movement can be seen easily among dead microorganisms and debris that show up black. Since the technique is low-cost and easy to implement, it addresses the needs of practitioners and is appropriate for a wide array of school contexts. A variety of microscopy techniques are used by researchers in the life and biomedical sciences. As these techniques become more powerful and more complex, it is vital that scientific articles containing images obtained with advanced microscopes include full details about how each image was obtained. To explore the reporting of such details we examined 240 original research articles published in eight journals. We found that the quality of reporting was poor, with some articles containing no information about how images were obtained, and many articles lacking important basic details. Efforts by researchers, funding agencies, journals, equipment manufacturers and staff at shared imaging facilities are required to improve the reporting of experiments that rely on microscopy techniques. Summary: By being at the interface of the exocytic and endocytic pathways, the plant trans‐Golgi network (TGN) is a multitasking and highly diversified organelle. Despite governing vital cellular processes, the TGN remains one of the most uncharacterized organelle of plant cells. In this review, we highlight recent studies that have contributed new insights and to the generation of markers needed to answer several important questions on the plant TGN. Several drugs specifically affecting proteins critical for the TGN functions have been extremely useful for the identification of mutants of the TGN in the pursuit to understand how the morphology and the function of this organelle are controlled. In addition to these chemical tools, we review emerging microscopy techniques that help visualize the TGN at an unpreceded resolution and appreciate the heterogeneity and dynamics of this organelle in plant cells. Here, we propose unique applications of the Goos–Hänchen effect in optical differential operation and image edge detection. This Letter describes the theoretical foundation and experimental realization of the proposed scheme. The development of materials science always benefits from advanced characterizations. Currently, imaging techniques are of great technological importance in both fundamental and applied research on materials. In comparison to conventional visualization methods, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) is non-invasive, with macroscale and high-contrast scanning, a simple and fast sample preparation procedure as well as easy operation. In addition, CLSM allows rapid acquisition of longitudinal and cross-sectional images at any position in a material. Therefore, the CLSM-based visualization technique could provide direct and model-independent insight into material characterizations. This review summarizes the recent applications of CLSM in materials science. The current CLSM approaches for the visualization of surface structures, internal structures, spatial structures and reaction processes are discussed in detail. Finally, we provide our thoughts and predictions on the future development of CLSM in materials science. The purpose of this review is to guide researchers to build a suitable CLSM approach for material characterizations, and to open viable opportunities and inspirations for the development of new strategies aiming at the preparation of advanced materials. Microscopy and stained specimens engage students visually as they learn about plant anatomy, a topic covered in many biology and introductory science courses. In this activity, students section plant material and prepare specimens to view under a brightfield microscope. Using a camera or cell phone, images of microscope slide contents allow students to label plant parts and engage in discussions with peers. • Expansion microscopy was demonstrated with 22 fluorophores and their brightness was compared. • Among 22 fluorophores, four optimum fluorophores for four standard lasers were decided. • Five-color expansion microscopy was demonstrated via bleaching and re-staining. Super-resolution microscopy techniques have been widely adopted in biological sciences. Recently, a new super-resolution microscopy technique, called expansion microscopy (ExM) has been developed. In this technique, biomolecules inside specimens are first labeled with fluorophores, followed by in-situ hydrogel synthesis and physical expansion of the specimens. Image quality, including brightness and signal-to-noise ratio, depends on the extent to which fluorophores have bleached during the in-situ hydrogel synthesis process. In this work, we compared the fluorescence signal brightness of more than 20 fluorophores, after expansion, to identify the best fluorophore set for 4-color expansion microscopy imaging. The traditional microscope technology has the limitation of short detection distance. In order to solve this problem, a reflective near-field optical microscope based on plasma pulse source is proposed. Firstly, based on the basic theory of the plasma pulse sound source in the well, the influence of the drill collar on the radiated sound field inside and outside the well is studied, and the excitation frequency range of the plasma pulse sound source in the process of drilling is determined. Secondly, the finite element method is used to simulate the reflection wave received by the plasma pulse source when there are reflection surfaces inside and outside the well during the drilling process under the reflective near-field optical microscope. On this basis, the best source distance and source excitation frequency of reflection near-field optical microscope are determined. Finally, through the comparison of open hole wells, it is determined that the excitation frequency of the sound source should be in the range of 2-3khz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Maya sites Balamkú, Calakmul, Becán, Chicanná, Xpuhil, Hormiguero, Muñeca, and Chactún are located in the south area of the Mexican State of Campeche, immerse in a tropical subhumid climate. Surrounded by jungle vegetation, these archeological sites preserve some of the best examples of sculptural elements from the pre-Classic (1800 b. C. – 250 a. C.) to the terminal Classic (1000 d. C.) periods. These sites display how the Maya used sculptures as architectural elements in order to emphasize their cosmogony and political beliefs. The main purpose of this research is to comprehend the technology of paint layer materials and to register the chromatic palettes by using surface and microscopic analytical techniques such as optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer system (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) in order to analyze and interpret the pictorial technique used for the architectural sculpture decoration. Since it was first demonstrated in 1987, magnetic force microscopy (MFM) has become a truly widespread and commonly used characterization technique that has been applied to a variety of research and industrial applications. Some of the main advantages of the method includes its high spatial resolution (typically ∼50 nm), ability to work in variable temperature and applied magnetic fields, versatility, and simplicity in operation, all without almost any need for sample preparation. However, for most commercial systems, the technique has historically provided only qualitative information, and the number of available modes was typically limited, thus not reflecting the experimental demands. Additionally, the range of samples under study was largely restricted to "classic" ferromagnetic samples (typically, thin films or patterned nanostructures). Throughout this Perspective article, the recent progress and development of MFM is described, followed by a summary of the current state-of-the-art techniques and objects for study. Finally, the future of this fascinating field is discussed in the context of emerging instrumental and material developments. Aspects including quantitative MFM, the accurate interpretation of the MFM images, new instrumentation, probe-engineering alternatives, and applications of MFM to new (often interdisciplinary) areas of the materials science, physics, and biology will be discussed. We first describe the physical principles of MFM, specifically paying attention to common artifacts frequently occurring in MFM measurements; then, we present a comprehensive review of the recent developments in the MFM modes, instrumentation, and the main application areas; finally, the importance of the technique is speculated upon for emerging or anticipated to emerge fields including skyrmions, 2D-materials, and topological insulators. We report the characterization of a lithium niobate photonic crystal cavity using near field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) operating in collection scanning mode. The cavity is implemented on an annealed proton exchange waveguide by focused ion beam milling. We observe a confinement of the optical field at the center of the cavity by analyzing the collected light with a probe positioned above the photonic structure. The experimental NSOM results obtained are compared to numerical results obtained by finite difference time domain method. A good agreement is obtained between theoretical and experimental results where a cavity mode appears around λ = 1540 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Angiogenesis plays an important role in tumor growth and expansion, which makes it one of the most critical subjects in oncologic research. Angiogenesis can be imaged with photoacoustic microscopy (PAM), however the lateral resolution deteriorates significantly out of focus. Virtual-point-detector-based synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) combined with the coherence weighting factor (CF) can alleviate the blurring, at a cost of anisotropy of resolution. In this study, a two-dimensional SAFT with CF was investigated to improve resolution and yield lateral resolution isotropy simultaneously. In a phantom study, two carbon fibers with a diameter of 6 μm fixed perpendicularly to each other were imaged with PAM developed in our laboratory. In the depth range of 0.6 mm near the focal spot, the best resolution processed with one-dimensional (1D) SAFT is 40 μm better than that processed with two-dimensional (2D) SAFT. However, the maximum difference in lateral resolution between the z-x and z-y planes is about 15 μm processed with 2D SAFT, while it is 145 μm processed with 1D SAFT. Furthermore, the 2D SAFT increased the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by up to 8 dB higher than 1D SAFT at an imaging depth of 700 μm below the focal spot. Finally, in vivo imaging of the dorsal subcutaneous microvasculature of a mouse was used to validate the improved performance of 2D SAFT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A finite one-dimensional microscopic model of a superfulid is presented. The model consists of interacting Bose particles with an additional impurity particle confined to a ring. Both semiclassical and exact quantum calculations reveal dissipationless motion of impurity with increased effective mass due to its interaction with the excitations of Bose fluid. It is shown that both the excitation spectrum of Bose fluid and the excitation spectrum of impurity can be analyzed using the structure of the ground state of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the density and temperature dependences of microscopic structure and hydrogen bond dynamics of water inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using molecular dynamics simulation. The CNTs are treated as rigid, and smoothly truncated extended simple point charge water model is adopted. The results show that as the overall density increases, the atomic density profiles of water inside CNTs become sharper, the peaks shift closer to the wall, and a new peak of hydrogen atomic density appears between the first (outermost) and second layer. The intermittent hydrogen bond correlation function CHB(t) of water inside CNTs decays slower than that of bulk water, and the rate of decay decreases as the tube diameter decreases. CHB(t) clearly decays more slowly for the first layer of water than for other regions inside CNTs. The CHB(t) of the interlayer hydrogen bonds decays faster than those of the other regions and even faster than that of the bulk water. On the other hand, the hydrogen bond lifetimes of the first layer are shorter than those of the inner layer(s). Interlayer hydrogen bond lifetimes are clearly shorter than those of the constituent layers. As a whole, the hydrogen bond lifetimes of water inside CNTs are shorter than those of bulk water, while the relaxation of CHB(t) is slower for the confined water than for bulk water. In other words, hydrogen bonds of water inside CNTs break more easily than those of bulk water, but the water molecules remain in each other’s vicinity and can easily reform the bonds. Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques such as laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) are rapidly growing due to the inherent design freedom and possibilities to produce components not available with other techniques. This could be utilized in, e.g., the design of new types of heat exchangers in ferritic stainless steels often used for high-temperature applications. Ferritic stainless steels are, however, difficult to weld and could therefore imply obstacles when produced by AM. When establishing the AM-produced alloy in new applications, it is therefore important to increase the understanding of the mechanical properties and high-temperature creep resistance in relation to the unique microstructure and printability. In this study, we have investigated the microstructure of Cr-rich SS446 ferritic stainless steel produced by L-PBF by microscopical and crystallographic techniques. The properties were compared to the conventionally produced tubes. The rapid cooling and reheating during the application of the subsequent powder layers during L-PBF introduces an intriguing microstructure consisting of a ferritic matrix with precipitation of austenite showing a Kurdjumov–Sachs orientation relationship. Characteristic dislocation networks were observed in the L-PBF samples and contributed to the good mechanical properties in the as-built state (more than twice the yield strength of the conventionally produced tube). Furthermore, the creep resistance at 800 °C was superior to the conventionally produced component, suggesting that L-PBF-produced SS446 possesses many advantages regarding production as compared to the conventional route. Background: Cryptosporidium spp. are protozoan parasites that cause diarrhea in humans and animals. Subtyping data about Cryptosporidium spp. in Isfahan, Iran is limited; therefore, we aimed to study the prevalence rate of Cryptosporidium spp. in cancer patients, associated risk factors, and subtypes of Cryptosporidium spp. Methods: Fecal samples were collected from 187 cancer patients from the Oncology Department of Seyed-al-Shohada Hospital, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences during 2014-2020 and screened for Cryptosporidium spp. using microscopical techniques. Nested PCR amplifying 18S rRNA gene was used to detect Cryptosporidium spp. in samples, followed by subtyping using nested PCR amplifying gp60 sequences. Results: Overall, the rate of infection with Cryptosporidium spp. was 4.3% (n=8). Five samples out of eight samples were identified as Cryptosporidium spp. using a nested PCR for the 18S rRNA gene, two subtypes of C. parvum named IIaA18G3R1 (n = 2) and IIaA17G2R1 (n = 2), and one subtype of C. hominis named IbA6G3 were identified by sequencing of the gp60. The IbA6G3 subtype has rarely been detected in other investigations. Conclusion: This is the first survey on the subtyping of Cryptosporidium spp. in this region.
