Abstract: President of Czechoslovakia (1989–1992) and Czech Republic (1993–2003). Playwright, essayist, and political dissident under the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, Havel became the last president of Czechoslovakia after the Velvet Revolution of 1989 and the first president of the Czech Republic in 1993. He led his new nation from social collectivism into a free-market economy.
