Abstract

Hipsters comprise an American subculture that emphasizes nonconformity and social change. The development of this subculture is part of a historical American tradition in which young adults challenge the social norms of their time through the adoption of countercultural practices. Hipsters can be seen as the inheritors of the cultural legacies of other such young adult countercultural groups as flappers, beatniks, yippies, hippies, punks, and goths. Traditionally, such groups are composed of disaffected youth seeking a sense of place and community by joining others with shared cultural interests. Self-alignment with a nonconformist group is often an important part of adolescent and young-adult identity formation.Cab Calloway, of Harlem's Cotton Club, coined the term hepsterWilliam P.
