Abstract

Few researchers have empirically investigated online instructional practices within adult basic education. Our aim was to review the available research on the intersection of effective instructional practices for online education "and" effective instructional practices for adult learners. The purpose of this manuscript is to present the available, yet limited, research on online instructional practices within adult basic education. The research-informed recommeneded online instruction practices for adult education that support the design of course features and the delivery of content are discussed. Adult education teacher quality may be enhanced by knowledge of effective practices of online education for adult learners; therefore we conclude with a summary of research-informed instructional practices for adult education teachers to implement when teaching online.
