Abstract

Data on age and sex composition are some of the most basic statistics a nation can collect about its people. They are determined by births, deaths, and migration and, in turn, affect other demographic characteristics such as fertility rates and regional changes in population (increases or decreases). In fact, both of these are the two constants that have been questions on every single census since 1790. The census is more than just a count of its people. It is a snapshot in time, enabling the identification of trends. By tracking these changes, ways historical events have impacted our population and allow future generations to understand the context of our times can be revealed.
