Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the decision-making processes of superintendents. Using a democratic lens and ethic of care, this researcher used a multiple case study design to examine two superintendents' perceptions of their processes. Analysis of interview data from the two cases showed that superintendents use a deliberative democratic decision-making process. This quantitative study forth brought four areas that should be considered when making decisions. These areas include the decision-making process itself, interaction with the community, interaction with the board of education, and managing obstacles. These areas have the potential to assist superintendents during their decision-making process in their schools. This research also supports the need for research to continue in the area of ethic of care for superintendents and the effect that is has on the decision-making process of superintendents.
