Abstract

This brief introduces "Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning," the American Association of Community Colleges' (AACC's) fifth national Learn and Serve America grant project and describes its grantee college programs. The goals of this grant project are to build on established foundations to integrate service learning into the institutional climate of community colleges and to increase the number, quality, and sustainability of service learning programs in colleges nationwide. Eight colleges were selected in a national grant competition in 2006 to become "Horizons" Mentee Colleges and are profiled in this brief. The colleges are: Baton Rouge Community College, Louisiana; College of Alameda, California; Laramie County Community College, Wyoming; Lorain County Community College, Ohio; Queensborough Community College, New York; Tacoma Community College, Washington; Trinidad State Junior College, Colorado; and Western Piedmont Community College, North Carolina.
