Abstract

This paper, written in Spanish, examines the viewing guide for the film "Breaking Away." The guide, prepared by the United States Information Agency, was intended for the use of teaching English as a Second Language. It is evaluated, along with the movie, to determine whether it fulfills its objectives of providing enriched and critical thinking with regard to foreign films. The paper presents a short summary of the movie and a general description of the guide. In addition, theoretical consideration is given to the nature of critical thinking and the potential for movies to provide cultural criticism. Finally, the guide is examined in detail to determine the type of lessons it provides, in particular with regard to cultural aspects and the challenges it presents that may be beneficial both to the teacher and the student.
