This hearing reviewed the Title I Grants to LEAs [local education agencies] (Title I) Program of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Title I is the largest federal education program for elementary and secondary schools. Since 1965, it has made nearly $133 billion available to states and school districts to improve the opportunity for a good education among disadvantaged students. This hearing provided the United States Senate with information on how the Title I Program works in Mississippi. The hearing included statements by Dr. Richard Thompson, State Superintendent of Education, Mississippi Department of Education; Dr. Lynn House, Bureau Director, Office of Innovative Support, Mississippi Department of Education; Joyce B. McNair, Superintendent, Humphreys County School District; Dr. Therrell Myers, Superintendent, Columbus Municipal School District; and Dr. Daniel Watkins, Superintendent, Yazoo City Municipal School District.
