Abstract
- The absence of a consistently implemented mathematics curriculum and the impact of ineffective teaching practices and instructional leadership in mathematics have a larger responsibility for underachievement by students in the Montgomery County Public Schools than previously realized. This conclusion is supported by three separate studies that found significant variability in classroom instruction, course content, and curriculum organization from school to school and within schools. Information about those three studies is provided, and implications for the future are discussed concerning curriculum, staff development, instructional leadership, policy, and evaluation and assessment.
