Abstract
- This report presents details of a study which gathered information about all kinds of media behaviors from a nationally representative sample of American youth--the study asked: In this modern media environment, how much time do American children devote to each of the different media? According to the report. The data for the study came from two national samples: a nationally representative sample of 1090 children aged 2 through 7 years and a nationally representative sample of 2065 students in grades 3 through 12 (8-18 years). The report is divided into the following sections: (1) Introduction; (2) Methods; (3) The Media Environment (household media, personal media, constant television households, children's media environment: some generalizations); (4) Patterns of Daily Media Use; (5) Content Preferences (television content, video content, movie content, video games, computer games, chat rooms, web sites, popular music, magazine genres, book genres, newspaper content, print); (6) Contexts of Exposure; (7) Further Explorations (personal contentedness and social adjustment, media preferences, attitudes toward television and computers, school grades, heavy versus light media exposure); and (8) Summary and Conclusions. Contains 90 tables of data and 36 references. A separate Appendix section with additional data is included: Appendix A deals with methodology; Appendix B details a media use diary; Appendix C contains toplines; Appendix D deals with media genres.
