Abstract
- Recognizing the need for a nationally coordinated effort to reduce playground injuries, the National Program for Playground Safety was created in 1995. This package of materials contains a booklet describing the national action plan for the prevention of playground injuries and accompanying supporting materials. The program booklet, designed for use by parents, teachers, recreation and park personnel, and caregivers involved in providing safe play environments, describes an action plan, outlining four goals: (1) design age appropriate playgrounds; (2) provide proper surfacing; (3) provide proper supervision; and (4) properly maintain playgrounds. The booklet also summarizes action steps taken at the national, state, and local levels and lists several resources. Additional materials contained in this package are: (1) a self-assessment on playground safety; (2) supervision guidelines for schools and child care centers; (3) five brochures describing the National Program for Playground Safety and each of its goals; (4) registration materials and a flyer for a playground safety course; (5) guidelines for planning children's play areas; and (6) a flyer describing National Playground Safety Day.
