Abstract
- This text provides an overview of vocational rehabilitation counseling and services. Part 1 lays the foundation. "Foundations of Rehabilitation" (Martin) describes bases of the process. "Historical Antecedents of the Rehabilitation Enterprise in America" and "Development of the Rehabilitation Enterprise in America" (Lassiter, Lassiter) describe historical antecedents and early development. "Development of the Rehabilitation Enterprise in America" (Martin, Gandy) is a more recent history. "Educational and Professional Organizational Development of the Discipline of Rehabilitation Counseling" (Gandy, Martin) describes development in regard to undergraduate and graduate education. Part 2 describes the rehabilitation process. "Rehabilitation Process" (Wright, Martin) uses the perspective of the counselor-client relationship. "Occupational Analysis, Job Development, and Placement Considerations for Rehabilitation Counselors" (Martin, Sinsabaugh, Jarrell, Hardy) and "Case Abstracts" (Martin, Jarrell, Sinsabaugh) overview the methodology of these processes and include case abstracts. "Ethical Considerations in Rehabilitation Counseling" (Martin, Wright) discusses ethical issues. Part 3 traces counseling and psychosocial aspects of disability. "Personal Experience of Acceptance and Adjustment to Disability" (Rothrock) is the author's account of adjusting to disability. "Psychodynamic Approach to Acceptance and Adjustment to Disability" (Hardy, Cull); "Adlerian Approach to Acceptance and Adjustment to Disability" (Rule); "Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy" (Gandy); and "Gestalt Therapy, Hypnosis, and Pain Management in Cancer Treatment" (Hardy) explore these perspectives. "Integrative Counseling and Psychosocial Approach to Acceptance and Adjustment to Disability" (Gandy, Martin) integrates perspectives. Part 4 discusses special topics in rehabilitation. "Rehabilitation Counseling Credentialing as a Professional Counseling Specialty" (Luck) studies development and current status of credentialing as a professional counseling specialty. "Substance Use Disorders in Rehabilitation" (Saltz, Lawton, Gray) describes substance abuse with implications for treatment and rehabilitation. "International and Multicultural Perspective on Disability and Rehabilitation" (Gandy, Hardy) offers personal perspectives on rehabilitation as an international and multicultural phenomenon.
