Abstract

This annual compilation examines issues in the shaping and adaptation of the modern university, in five articles. The first article, by Amy Sue Bix, is titled "'Backing into Sponsored Research': Physics and Engineering at Princeton University, 1945-1970." It reviews the process by which Princeton University (New Jersey) made a series of decisions which gradually involved it heavily in government-supported research having little to do with its educational mission. The second article is "American Universities and the Inclusion of Professional Schools" (by Hugh Hawkins) which addresses issues in the increasing mixing of academic and professional education and reviews this mixing throughout U.S. history. The third paper, by James Turner and Paul Bernard, is "The 'German Model' and the Graduate School: The University of Michigan and the Origin Myth of the American University." It reviews one example of university adaptation as the University of Michigan attempted to reconcile advanced learning with the institution's primary work of collegiate or undergraduate education and resulted in the grafting of the graduate school onto the college. The fourth article, "The Chinese Scholars and the Modern University: The Appropriation of Foreign Educational Models, 1900-1930" (Xiaoqing Diana Chen), reviews the tension between traditional Chinese intelligentsia and the adaptation of Chinese universities to Western knowledge. A final article by Patricia L. Gregg reviews Nathan Glazer's "Schools of the Minor Professions" in the context of the evolution of schools of education, business, and journalism. (Individual articles contain reference notes.) (DB)
